A Home-Based Biofeedback Intervention In A Hypertensive African American Sample: A Pilot Study, Paige Frankfurt Jul 2016

A Home-Based Biofeedback Intervention In A Hypertensive African American Sample: A Pilot Study, Paige Frankfurt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Approximately 70-80 million people in the US have hypertension. Left untreated, it can lead to heart disease and stroke, the 1st and 2ND leading causes of death in the US, respectively. African Americans (AA) are at particular risk for developing hypertension and, when present, they experience increased morbidity and mortality, in comparison to other races, as well as elevated risk of psychological distress. Further, when treated with the prevailing approaches, AAs experience more adverse side effects and often face a greater number of challenges with adherence. Despite some successful efforts at reducing high BP in general hypertensive populations, AAs continue …

Characterization And Functional Evaluation Of An Adhesive And Injectable Chitosan Paste Blended With Polyethylene Glycol For Bacterial Infection Prevention, Joel Martin Berretta Jul 2016

Characterization And Functional Evaluation Of An Adhesive And Injectable Chitosan Paste Blended With Polyethylene Glycol For Bacterial Infection Prevention, Joel Martin Berretta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Surgeries to treat musculoskeletal wounds need to inhibit or prevent contaminating bacteria from causing an infection for optimal wound healing. Current local drug delivery biomaterial systems, such as bone cemeent beads and chitosan paste, do not fully degrade and/or do not offer full wound coverage which may limit the efficacy of antibiotic therapy, respectively. Chitosan paste is a biocompatibile, degradable, local drug delivery system which allows for complete wound coverage and decreases the diffusion distance of antibiotics to bacteria. This research used blended chitosan-polyethylene glycol (PEG) pastes to improve biocompatibility, increased degradation rate, and provide efficient and effective elution of …

Computational Methods For Gene Expression And Genomic Sequence Analysis, Nam Sy Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Advances in technologies currently produce more and more cost-effective, high-throughput, and large-scale biological data. As a result, there is an urgent need for developing efficient computational methods for analyzing these massive data. In this dissertation, we introduce methods to address several important issues in gene expression and genomic sequence analysis, two of the most important areas in bioinformatics.Firstly, we introduce a novel approach to predicting patterns of gene response to multiple treatments in case of small sample size. Researchers are increasingly interested in experiments with many treatments such as chemicals compounds or drug doses. However, due to cost, many experiments …

Implicit Mental Processes Are An Improbable Basis For Personhood, Michael L. Woodruff Jul 2016

Implicit Mental Processes Are An Improbable Basis For Personhood, Michael L. Woodruff

Animal Sentience

Rowlands argues that animals have implicit pre-reflective awareness and that this is adequate to create the unity of conscious thought required for personhood. For him pre-reflective awareness does not include intentionality and is probably an unconscious process. I suggest that his sense of implicit leads to significant difficulties for his argument and that including intentionality in the definition of a first-person perspective provides a stronger base for viewing animals as persons.

Bacterial Spheroplasts As A Model For Visualizing Membrane Translocation Of Antimicrobial Peptides, Lei Wei, Maria A. Labouyer, Louise E. O. Darling, Donald E. Elmore Jul 2016

Bacterial Spheroplasts As A Model For Visualizing Membrane Translocation Of Antimicrobial Peptides, Lei Wei, Maria A. Labouyer, Louise E. O. Darling, Donald E. Elmore

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Studies attempting to characterize the membrane translocation of antimicrobial and cellpenetrating peptides frequently are limited by the resolution of conventional light microscopy. This study shows that spheroplasts provide a valuable approach to overcome these limits. Spheroplasts produce less ambiguous images and allow for more systematic analyses of localization. Data collected with spheroplasts are consistent with studies using normal bacterial cells and imply that a particular peptide may not always follow the same mechanism of action.

Rethinking Critical Thinking: A Relational And Contextual Approach, Matthew H. Bowker, K. Patrick Fazioli Jul 2016

Rethinking Critical Thinking: A Relational And Contextual Approach, Matthew H. Bowker, K. Patrick Fazioli

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Contemporary discussions of critical thinking lack serious consideration of students’ thinking-processes as phenomena embedded within the contexts of psychological and interpersonal relationships. This paper departs from past and present approaches to critical thinking pedagogy by analogizing thinking and critical thinking with forms of relating: to self, to others, to objects of thought, and to what we describe as “thinking-relationships.” The analogy of thinking with relating permits us to examine more closely the connections between self, psyche, student, teacher, and learning institution, and to apply valuable insights from the fields of social philosophy and psychoanalytic theory to critical thinking pedagogy and …

Effects Of Angular Deformation On The Energetics Of The Sn2 Reaction, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah-Nziko, Steve Scheiner Jul 2016

Effects Of Angular Deformation On The Energetics Of The Sn2 Reaction, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah-Nziko, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Quantum calculations are applied to a number of model SN2 reactions. The halides F-, Cl-, and Br- were allowed to attack the central C atom of a set of CH2RI molecules, with R= H, CH3, CH=CH2, C≡CH, and C≡N. For each system the X∙∙C∙∙I angle was distorted in set increments from the optimized value, and the activation energy computed for each angle. The energy of the transition state rose in conjunction with this deformation. However, the distortion energy of the initial X-∙∙CH2RI reaction complex was similar in magnitude. As a result, the activation energy of the reaction was quite insensitive …

Interpretation Of Spectroscopic Markers Of Hydrogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner Jul 2016

Interpretation Of Spectroscopic Markers Of Hydrogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Quantum calculations are used to examine whether a AH∙∙D H-bond is unambiguously verified by a downfield shift of the bridging proton’s NMR signal or a red (or blue) shift of the AH stretching frequency in the IR spectrum. It is found that such IR band shifts will occur even if the two groups experience weak or no attractive force, or if they are drawn in so close together that their interaction is heavily repulsive. The mere presence of a proton-acceptor molecule can affect the chemical shielding of a position occupied by a proton-donor by virtue of its electron density, even …

Kirakodu, Michael John Novak, Luis Orraca, Janis Gonzalez-Martinez, Larry Cunningham Jr., Mark V. Thomas, Arnold J. Stromberg, Subramanya N. Pandruvada, Octavio A. Gonzalez

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Evidence has shown activation of T and B cells in gingival tissues in experimental models and in humans diagnosed with periodontitis. The results of this adaptive immune response are noted both locally and systemically with antigenic specificity for an array of oral bacteria, including periodontopathic species, e.g., Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. It has been recognized through epidemiological studies and clinical observations that the prevalence of periodontitis increases with age. This report describes our studies evaluating gingival tissue transcriptomes in humans and specifically exploiting the use of a non-human primate model of naturally occurring periodontitis to delineate gingival mucosal …

Comparisons Of The Socio-Behavioral Differences Between Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes) And Bonobos (Pan Paniscus), Investigating The Impact Of A Naturally Occurring Polymorphic Microsatellite Deletion In The 5’ Flanking Region Of Arginine Vasopressin Receptor 1a (Avpr1a) On Gene Expression And Sociality Within The Pan Genus, Robert E. Evans

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Among the great apes, chimpanzees are unique in having a polymorphic deletion of a ~350bp microsatellite containing region (DupB) in the 5’ flanking region of the arginine vasopressin receptor 1a (AVPR1a) gene. This results in three genotypes (DupB+/+, DupB+/- and DupB-/-) of AVPR1a in chimpanzees. Variations in the length of microsatellites 5’ of AVPR1a have been associated with social behaviors (pair-bonding, paternal care, degree of social interest) and differential levels of expression of AVPR1a in the brains of voles. The polymorphic DupB microsatellite in chimpanzees allows the investigation of microsatellite variation 5’ of AVPR1a in higher order primates. We hypothesized …

Identification Of Preferred Dna-Binding Sites For The Thermus Thermophilus Transcriptional Regulator Sbtr By The Combinatorial Approach Repsa, Michael W. Van Dyke, Matthew D. Beyer, Emily Clay, Jonathan L. Mcmurry Jul 2016

Identification Of Preferred Dna-Binding Sites For The Thermus Thermophilus Transcriptional Regulator Sbtr By The Combinatorial Approach Repsa, Michael W. Van Dyke, Matthew D. Beyer, Emily Clay, Jonathan L. Mcmurry

Faculty Articles

One of the first steps towards elucidating the biological function of a putative transcriptional regulator is to ascertain its preferred DNA-binding sequences. This may be rapidly and effectively achieved through the application of a combinatorial approach, one involving very large numbers of randomized oligonucleotides and reiterative selection and amplification steps to enrich for high-affinity nucleic acid-binding sequences. Previously, we had developed the novel combinatorial approach Restriction Endonuclease Protection, Selection and Amplification (REPSA), which relies not on the physical separation of ligand-nucleic acid complexes but instead selects on the basis of ligand-dependent inhibition of enzymatic template inactivation, specifically cleavage by type …
