Electrocorticography (ECoG) is a minimally invasive neural recording method that has been extensively used for neuroscience applications. It has proven to have the potential to ease the establishment of proper links for neural interfaces that can offer disabled patients an alternative solution for their lost sensory and motor functions through the use of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. Although many neural recording methods exist, ECoG provides a combination of stability, high spatial and temporal resolution with chronic and mobile capabilities that could make BCI systems accessible for daily applications. However, many ECoG electrodes require MEMS fabricating techniques which are accompanied by …
Use Of Distance Weighted Metrics To Investigate Landscape-Stream Temperature Relationships Across Different Temporal Scales, Eric Craig Watson
Use Of Distance Weighted Metrics To Investigate Landscape-Stream Temperature Relationships Across Different Temporal Scales, Eric Craig Watson
Dissertations and Theses
Stream ecosystems have experienced significant negative impacts from land use, resource exploitation, and urban development. Statistical models allow researchers to explore the relationships between these landscape variables and stream conditions. Weighting the relevant landscape variables based on hydrologically defined distances offers a potential method of increasing the predictive capacity of statistical models. Using observations from three grouped watersheds in the Portland Metro Area (n=66), I have explored the use of three different weighting schemes against the standard method of taking an areal average. These four different model groups were applied to four stream temperature metrics: mean seven-day moving average maximum …

Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis are tropical diseases caused by infections with parasitic nematodes. Resulting chronic diseases can be strongly blinding and disfiguring, and contribute to an entrenched cycle of poverty in affected populations. Ivermectin is one of the pivotal drugs used to control these infections. The mechanism of antifilarial action of the drug is incompletely resolved. It kills circulating larval stages (microfilariae), but only reversibly sterilizes adult worms without killing them. Our limited understanding of the involved mechanisms hampers treatment optimization and sustainability of the efficacy of the drug, and investigations into its pharmacology are of paramount importance. Working with …

Integrating Diet And Exercise Into Care Of Prostate Cancer Patients On Androgen Deprivation Therapy, Mark A. Moyad, Robert Newton, Ulf W. Tunn, Damian Gruca
Integrating Diet And Exercise Into Care Of Prostate Cancer Patients On Androgen Deprivation Therapy, Mark A. Moyad, Robert Newton, Ulf W. Tunn, Damian Gruca
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Improved diagnosis and treatment regimens have resulted in greater longevity for men with prostate cancer. This has led to an increase in both androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) use and duration of exposure, and therefore to its associated adverse effects, such as sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis, reduced muscle mass, increased fat mass, and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Given that the adverse effects of ADT are systemic, often debilitating, and difficult to treat, efforts continue in the development of new strategies for long-term management of prostate cancer. The PubMed database was searched to select trials, reviews, and meta-analyses …

Universal health coverage (UHC) has gained prominence as a global health priority. The UHC movement aims to increase access to quality, needed health services while reducing financial hardship from health spending, particularly in low- and middle- income countries.
As a policy agenda, UHC has been identified primarily with prepayment and risk-pool- ing programs. While financing policies provide important benefits, increasing access to health services will require broader reforms.
For lessons, the UHC movement should look to the global HIV response, which has confronted many of the same barriers to access in weak health systems. Considerable success on HIV has resulted …
Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos
Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos
The Qualitative Report
Sex toys promote a new consumptive ethos whose significance may be adequately outlined by attending to the institutional implications of this product category’s consumption. By drawing on Foucault’s theory of sexuality and the technologies of the self that materialize with the aid of discursive formations about sexuality, as well as on relevant sociological and ethnographic insights, I undertake a qualitative content analysis on a corpus of 100 sex toys’ product reviews from popular magazines and web sites in order to identify how the discourse about sex toys is articulated in terms of three dominant categories of sexual scripts (Simon & …

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), undertook a biological control (BC) programme for control of stemborers from 1993 to 2008, to reduce cereal yield losses due to stemborer attack in East and Southern Africa. The programme released four biological control agents-the larval parasitoids Cotesia flavipes and Cotesia sesamiae, the egg parasitoid Telenomus isis and the pupal parasitoid Xanthopimpla stemmator-to control the economically important stemborer pests Busseola fusca, Chilo partellus and Sesamia calamistis. Two of the natural enemies that were released got established and spread to many localities in the region. This study adopted the economic surplus model …

All Is Whale That Ends Whale? The Deficiencies In National Protection For Orca Whales In Captivity, Hillary T. Wise
Akron Law Review
With the severity of our Earth’s climate change crisis, this article endeavors to underline the critical need for environmental reformation. It is no secret that orca whales epitomize miraculous intelligence, gentility, and strength. As overwhelming as this crisis might be, there are very concrete steps that our legal system can take to begin protecting and making a difference for our whales and our Earth. It is my hope that this article can shed some light on what is at stake for these animals, and how we might move forward toward a sustainable, safe future for them.

How Best To Study For A Test: A Comparison Of Practice Retrieval And Self-Explanation, Casey Fortney
How Best To Study For A Test: A Comparison Of Practice Retrieval And Self-Explanation, Casey Fortney
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Students often struggle to prepare for their exams, perhaps as a result of using an unhelpful study method. This study compared the effects of using three study methods: rereading, practice retrieval, and self-explanation. 79 college students studied a short science text passage and were tested with both verbatim and inference questions one week later. Students who reread the information did not perform differently from those who practiced retrieving or self-explained the information. Students who self-explained the information performed better on verbatim test questions than those who practiced retrieving the information. Possible explanations for these findings and implications are discussed.
Extracurricular Involvement And Anxiety In Relation To Suicide Ideation Among College Students, Paula Floyd
Extracurricular Involvement And Anxiety In Relation To Suicide Ideation Among College Students, Paula Floyd
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Little research exists on college students’ extracurricular involvement as it relates to anxiety and suicidal ideation. The current study seeks to examine the relationships between extracurricular involvement, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. First, it was hypothesized that increased extracurricular involvement would relate to increased anxiety. Second, increased anxiety was expected to mediate the relationship between involvement and explicit suicidal ideation. Third, increased anxiety was expected to mediate the relationship between involvement and implicit suicidal ideation. Fourth, it was expected that thwarted belongingness would be a more accurate predictor of suicidal ideation than perceived burdensomeness. The sample included 80 undergraduates with a …

Gpu-Arraysort: A Parallel, In-Place Algorithm For Sorting Large Number Of Arrays, Muaaz Awan, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
Modern day analytics deals with big datasets from diverse fields. For many application the data is in the form of an array which consists of large number of smaller arrays. Existing techniques focus on sorting a single large array and cannot be used for sorting large number of smaller arrays in an efficient manner. Currently no such algorithm is available which can sort such large number of arrays utilizing the massively parallel architecture of GPU devices. In this paper we present a highly scalable parallel algorithm, called GPU-ArraySort, for sorting large number of arrays using a GPU. Our algorithm performs …

Do Ask, Do Tell: The Exclusion Of Gay Men From Universal Male Conscription In The Republic Of Turkey, Barrett Greenwell
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
What are the implications of the Republic of Turkey’s paradoxical policies of universal male conscription and exclusion of gay men from military service? To answer this question, this project draws on four months of research in Turkey where interviews were conducted with prominent lawyers and activists as well as with gay men who personally experienced the inhumane exemption process of the Turkish military. This project first analyzes the historical reasons for the military’s pervasive influence in Turkish society. Next, it explores the many issues inherent in a policy of universal conscription without the right to conscientious objection. The project then …

The Development And Implementation Of An Autonomy-Supportive Professional Development Model: Does It Affect Teachers' Intentions And Motivations To Provide Autonomy-Supportive Education?, Natalie Sue Wiemann
Dissertations
Structures in schools often fail to support and encourage students to be active agents in their own learning. Self-determination theory (SDT) provides a theoretical framework for educational reform intending to encourage empowering supports for teachers and students. The purpose of this Dissertation in Practice (DIP) project was to design and implement an autonomy-supportive professional development (PD) model and to test the efficacy of this PD model to enhance teachers’ intentions and motivations to support their students’ autonomy. This dissertation presents a quasi-experimental study utilizing two intact groups of teachers at two different elementary schools. The PD model was intended to …

Genetic Risk For Increased Oxidative Stress In The Aging Brain:Implications For White Matter Integrity And Cognition, Lauren Salminen
Genetic Risk For Increased Oxidative Stress In The Aging Brain:Implications For White Matter Integrity And Cognition, Lauren Salminen
Dissertations
Oxidative stress is a key mechanism of the aging process that can cause damage to brain white matter and cognitive functions. Allele variations of two polymorphisms (SOD2, CAT -262) have been associated with abnormalities in antioxidant enzyme activity, suggesting a risk for enhanced oxidative damage to brain white matter and cognition among older individuals with these genetic mutations. The present study utilized diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neuropsychological assessment to compare differences in microstructural white matter integrity and cognitive performance among 96 older adults (age 50-85) with and without genetic risk factors of SOD2 (rs4880) and CAT -262 (rs1001179). Results …

Development Of A Long-Period Torsion Balance For Tests Of Einstein's Equivalence Principle And A Search For Normal Mode Torsional Oscillations Of The Earth, Michael David Abercrombie
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the development of a torsion balance experiment designed to test Einstein's equivalence principle with unprecedented sensitivity, while also taking a novel approach to directly observe the normal mode torsional oscillations of the Earth. Accordingly, a model of the signal expected from a potential equivalence principle violation has been developed, as well as a multi-slit auto-collimating optical lever which possesses a resolution on the order of a nanoradian and a range of observation of 10 milliradians and is used to monitor the torsion balance. A torsion balance with a natural torsional frequency of ~104 Hz, signi_cantly below the …

Shame In The Nineteenth-Century Village Tale In The German-Speaking Context, 1843-1897, Angineh Djavadghazaryans
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the genre of the German village tale, the so-called Dorfgeschichte. Looking at village tales published between 1843 and 1897 by Berthold Auerbach, Gottfried Keller, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, and Clara Viebig, I investigate emotions of shame and examine reasons for the emergence of shameful feelings in village life and the ways in which these feelings are represented in village tales. Shame, as I will show, not only constitutes an important component of the Dorfgeschichte, but the genre itself offers a forum in which shame can be discussed. Research has shown that shame is not a modern category; I …
Relationship Satisfaction And Health Outcomes In The Context Of Personality, Janine Galione
Relationship Satisfaction And Health Outcomes In The Context Of Personality, Janine Galione
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Self-reported dissatisfaction in romantic relationships is a well-documented risk factor for impaired physical health outcomes. Most research has focused on identifying the mechanisms that could potentially explain this link, but it is just as important to explore what type of person is more vulnerable to the quality of romantic relationships. Relationship satisfaction may be more consequential in the context of some personality traits than others. We examined whether each of the five factor traits interacts with self-reported relationship satisfaction to predict three health outcomes over 18 months: major physical health events, health perceptions, and health behaviors. The hypotheses for this …
Mechanisms Of Extracellular Vesicle Biogenesis, Charles Eldon Jackson
Mechanisms Of Extracellular Vesicle Biogenesis, Charles Eldon Jackson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important mediators of intercellular communication. Different types of EVs are released from cells by either fusion of late endsomal multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane (exosomes) or direct budding from the plasma membrane (ectosomes). Topologically equivalent processes including intralumenal vesicle formation for degradation in the endosomal pathway and virus budding from the plasma membrane depend on the ATPase VPS4 and its Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport (ESCRT)-III substrates for membrane fission and release. Whether this machinery is generally required for EV biogenesis has, however, been the subject of debate. Studies of the EV proteome from …

Protecting the genome is a vital aspect of safeguarding organismal health. Inability to efficiently and effectively replicate the genome or repair damage the genome may encounter can lead to mutational accumulation or senescence, both of which are drivers of multiple diseases including cancer. Understanding the mechanisms by which the genome is maintained, as well as the consequences of repeated rounds of replication or exposure to DNA damaging agents, will allow for greater understanding of the diseases they promote as well as development of targeted therapies aimed at mitigating the detrimental effects of genomic insult. The first section of my work …
