Study On Grading Of Betel Nuts By Computer Vision, Xu Yueming, Cai Jianrong, Gong Yinghui
Food and Machinery
Current technologies for grading betel nuts remain rudimentary and heavily rely on manual inspection, which results in no assurance over grading quality. This paper describes a betel nut grading method based on the computer vision technology, which comprises image capture and pre-processing to collect characteristics such as color, shape, and texture. It is observed that combining both color and shape characteristics leads to satisfactory grading results. This method can reach a recognition rate over 90.38% following principle components analysis (PCA) and a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm.

Changes In Job Satisfaction Through Time In Two Major New England Fishing Ports, Tarsila Seara, Richard Pollnac, John J. Poggie
Changes In Job Satisfaction Through Time In Two Major New England Fishing Ports, Tarsila Seara, Richard Pollnac, John J. Poggie
Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications
Fishing communities in the U.S. have been the subject of great transformation due to changes in availability of resources and the implementation of different rules and regulations to manage the fisheries and conserve fish stocks. Job satisfaction has been widely regarded as an important component of well-being especially among fishermen because the occupation of fishing includes attributes of ‘adventure,’ ‘challenge,’ and ‘being outdoors’ infrequently found in other employment. It has been previously demonstrated that management driven changes to fishing communities can directly and indirectly affect aspects of fishermen’s job satisfaction and, consequently, their wellbeing. This paper presents a unique through …

If Insects Have Phenomenal Consciousness, Could They Suffer?, Elizabeth S. Paul, Michael T. Mendl
Animal Sentience
Klein & Barron’s (K & B’s) suggestion that insects have the capacity for phenomenal consciousness is a refreshing and challenging departure from the cautious and agnostic stance that is taken by many researchers when considering this possibility. It is impossible to falsify the sceptic’s view that neural and behavioural parallels between humans and insects need not imply either similar conscious experience or even any phenomenal consciousness in insects at all. But if K & B are right, it is important to consider the possible contents of insect consciousness. Here we discuss whether affective consciousness, with its implications for potential suffering, …

Epstein-Barr Viral Micrornas Target Caspase 3, Cecelia Harold, Diana Cox, Kasandra J. Riley
Faculty Publications
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus that transforms B cells and causes several malignancies including Burkitt’s lymphoma. EBV differentially expresses at least 49 mature microRNAs (miRNAs) during latency in various infected epithelial and B cells. Recent high-throughput studies and functional assays have begun to reveal the function of the EBV miRNAs suggesting roles in latency, cell cycle control, and apoptosis. In particular, the central executioner of apoptosis, Caspase 3 (CASP3), was proposed as a target of select EBV miRNAs. However, whether CASP3 is truly a target of EBV miRNAs, and if so, which specific miRNAs target CASP3 is …
