“A Girl Move”: Negotiating Gender And Technology In Chess Online And Offline, Undrah Baasanjav Sep 2016

“A Girl Move”: Negotiating Gender And Technology In Chess Online And Offline, Undrah Baasanjav

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The confluence of gender and information technology in chess is explored in this chapter based on a small empirical interview study. By interviewing nine women chess players who compete in men's tournaments, the chapter examines the underrepresentation of women in the traditionally male domain of chess and discusses the role of computers and the Internet in women players' work/play routines. Five in-depth interviews were conducted Face-to-Face (FTF) and four interviews were conducted over the Internet using the textual chat feature of the International Chess Club during the summer of 2010. How women negotiate gendered identity and how they position themselves …

Lived Experiences Of Reintegration: A Study Of How Former Prisoners Experienced Reintegration In A Local Context., Sylvia Brand Sep 2016

Lived Experiences Of Reintegration: A Study Of How Former Prisoners Experienced Reintegration In A Local Context., Sylvia Brand

Doctoral

Notwithstanding prison populations generally being characterised by a high degree of marginalisation and socio-economic disadvantage –– the concept of reintegration pertains to the notion that prisoners eventually return to the community to live crimefree and productive lives. That so many are outside the realm of mainstream society, it can be argued that to expect prisoners to “reintegrate” back into society poses somewhat of a conundrum –– as most were never fully integrated into society to begin with. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach this thesis investigates the experience of reintegration in a small city (population = 119,230) from in-depth interviews with …

Microdose Fluorescence Imaging Of Aby-029 On An Operating Microscope Adapted By Custom Illumination And Imaging Modules, Jonathan T. Elliott, Alisha V. Dsouza, Kayla Marra, Brian W. Pogue, David Roberts, Keith Paulsen Sep 2016

Microdose Fluorescence Imaging Of Aby-029 On An Operating Microscope Adapted By Custom Illumination And Imaging Modules, Jonathan T. Elliott, Alisha V. Dsouza, Kayla Marra, Brian W. Pogue, David Roberts, Keith Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Fluorescence guided surgery has the potential to positively impact surgical oncology; current operating microscopes and stand-alone imaging systems are too insensitive or too cumbersome to maximally take advantage of new tumor-specific agents developed through the microdose pathway. To this end, a custom-built illumination and imaging module enabling picomolar-sensitive near-infrared fluorescence imaging on a commercial operating microscope is described. The limits of detection and system specifications are characterized, and in vivo efficacy of the system in detecting ABY-029 is evaluated in a rat orthotopic glioma model following microdose injections, showing the suitability of the device for microdose phase 0 clinical trials.

Objective:

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the mean ages of onset and duration of pubertal growth peak among three skeletal classes.

Methods:

A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using lateral cephalograms of 230 subjects with growth potential (110 males, 120 females). Subjects were categorized into three classes (Class I = 81, Class II = 82, Class III = 67), according to the sagittal relationship established between the maxilla and the mandible. …

Hydrodynamic Performance Of Aquatic Flapping: Efficiency Of Underwater Flight In The Manta, Frank E. Fish, Christian M. Schreiber, Keith W. Moored, Geng Liu, Haibo Dong, Hilary Bart-Smith Sep 2016

Hydrodynamic Performance Of Aquatic Flapping: Efficiency Of Underwater Flight In The Manta, Frank E. Fish, Christian M. Schreiber, Keith W. Moored, Geng Liu, Haibo Dong, Hilary Bart-Smith

Biology Faculty Publications

The manta is the largest marine organism to swim by dorsoventral oscillation (flapping) of the pectoral fins. The manta has been considered to swim with a high efficiency stroke, but this assertion has not been previously examined. The oscillatory swimming strokes of the manta were examined by detailing the kinematics of the pectoral fin movements swimming over a range of speeds and by analyzing simulations based on computational fluid dynamic potential flow and viscous models. These analyses showed that the fin movements are asymmetrical up- and downstrokes with both spanwise and chordwise waves interposed into the flapping motions. These motions …

The Manifestation Of Stress And Rumination In Musicians, Michael M. Roy, Joseph R. Radzevick, Laura Getz Sep 2016

The Manifestation Of Stress And Rumination In Musicians, Michael M. Roy, Joseph R. Radzevick, Laura Getz

Management Faculty Publications

Here we offer a brief review of research on individual differences that are common to musicians, focusing on our own work on rumination and stress. Rumination and stress have been linked with depression and negative health outcomes. We discuss two of our published studies and two new, unpublished replications that find elevated levels of rumination and stress in musicians. Further, we review literature that finds this combination of rumination and stress might be especially toxic. Even though people frequently use music to help combat stress, musicians may not be taking advantage of their frequent exposure to music, further exacerbating the …

Modifying Mindfulness: A Christian Translation Of Mindfulness, Ryan P. O'Farrell Sep 2016

Modifying Mindfulness: A Christian Translation Of Mindfulness, Ryan P. O'Farrell

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Recently, psychologists have been captivated by the utility of mindfulness in treating a number of psychological problems. Despite the prevalence of mindfulness based treatments, Christian psychologists have done surprisingly little work towards integrating mindfulness, an originally Buddhist concept, with a Christian worldview. Using Johnson's (2007) translation metaphor, I proposed a Christian translation of mindfulness. In order to produce a faithful translation, I first described mindfulness as it appears in the psychological literature. Next, I translated the different elements of Kabat-Zinn’s (1994) definition of mindfulness as well as a number of proposed mindfulness change mechanisms into a Christian worldview, showing how …

Pbl In Korean Medical Schools: Point Of View, Bong-Hyun Chang, Sang-Hee Yeo, Jong-Tae Lee Sep 2016

Pbl In Korean Medical Schools: Point Of View, Bong-Hyun Chang, Sang-Hee Yeo, Jong-Tae Lee

Journal of Medical Education

In 1991, a Korean medical school implemented PBL. We review the historical development of PBL and survey the current status of PBL in Korean medical schools. Most Korean medical schools have adopted various hybrid forms of PBL. We discuss the reasons why hybrid PBL is extensively implemented in Korea. Finally, we forecast the future of PBL in Korean medical schools. In conclusion, more student-centered learning modalities including PBL will have to be introduced to Korean medical schools.

Personal Viewpoint: On The Scientific Method And Clinical Reasoning In The Pbl Curriculum, Damon Sakai, Bong-Hyun Chang, Chiu-Yin Kwan, Leslie Tam

Journal of Medical Education

The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) curricular standard #2 is that medical schools must throughout the curriculum teach the scientific method. In problem-based learning (PBL) Howard Barrows has written that hypothetico-deduction is the scientific method of clinicians. We discuss how the scientific method can be used daily in PBL. The Group of Related Diseases Display (GRDD), as an educational scaffold used by some PBL students, is introduced. The GRDD facilitates the forward clinical reasoning exercise (CRE) in which the tutor plays a simulated patient, and the reverse CRE, in which students write a new case and simulate the patient. …

Caring For Children With Severe Allergies: Establishing Protocols For Epipens And Other Medical Needs Through Collaborative Practices, William Arthur Parnell, Allison Schnur, Lynn Green

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

As educators and researchers, throughout our work with young children and families, we authors have cared for children who were prescribed an epinephrine auto-injection device to be used in the case of a severe allergic reaction. However, it wasn't until we actually had to consider using such a device, commonly referred to as an EpiPen-a popular brand of epinephrine auto-injector-that we realized the care plan for these children was unclear. In many ways, the protocols and care-taking processes for managing severe allergies felt unlike those for many other medical concerns due to the instantaneous life threatening nature, immediately needed reactions, …

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Natural variations in 238U/235U of marine calcium carbonates might provide a useful way of constraining redox conditions of ancient environments. In order to evaluate the reliability of this proxy, we conducted aragonite and calcite coprecipitation experiments at pH ~7.5 and ~8.5 to study possible U isotope fractionation during incorporation into these minerals.Small but significant U isotope fractionation was observed in aragonite experiments at pH ~8.5, with heavier U isotopes preferentially enriched in the solid phase. 238U/235U of dissolved U in these experiments can be fit by Rayleigh fractionation curves with fractionation factors of 1.00007 + 0.00002/-0.00003, …

Perception, Self-Regulation And Self-Leadership: Guiding Principles For Effective Leaders In Education, Richard Pircher, Christiane Seuhs-Schoeller Sep 2016

Perception, Self-Regulation And Self-Leadership: Guiding Principles For Effective Leaders In Education, Richard Pircher, Christiane Seuhs-Schoeller

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

The ability of an organization to survive and to be successful relates to its potential to adapt to a changing environment. The competence to perceive relevant stimuli from the outside and the inside of the organization constitutes a prerequisite for organizational adaptability. Consequently, appropriate perception is a crucial factor for individuals and teams to decide and behave in a productive way.

Self-leadership may be defined as “a comprehensive self-influence perspective that concerns leading oneself toward performance of naturally motivating tasks as well as managing oneself to do work that must be done but is not naturally motivating” (Manz, 1986, p. …

Is This Relevant? Physician Perceptions, Clinical Relevance, And Religious Content In Clinical Interactions, Aaron B. Franzen Sep 2016

Is This Relevant? Physician Perceptions, Clinical Relevance, And Religious Content In Clinical Interactions, Aaron B. Franzen

Faculty Publications

Despite wide support among physicians for practicing patient-centered care, clinical interactions are primarily driven by physicians’ perception of relevance. While some will perceive a connection between religion and patient health, this relevance will be less apparent for others. I argue that physician responses when religious/spiritual topics come up during clinical interactions will depend on their own religious/spiritual background. The more central religion is for the physician, the greater his or her perception of religion's impact on health outcomes and his or her inclusion of religion/spirituality within clinical interactions. Using a nationally representative sample of physicians in the United States and …

Bibliography To Current Knowledge Of Studies Of Pathogens In Colombian Mammals, Viviana Gonzalez-Astudillo, Héctor E. Ramírez-Chaves, Joerg Henning, Thomas R. Gillespie

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

Mammals provide an important ecological habitat or niche space to microbial diversity, protistans (or protozoans) and metazoan parasites that can have profound effects on both human and animal health. Thus, understanding the status of mammalian species as hosts for pathogens holds relevance, especially during this time of anthropogenic environmental change. Despite the great diversity in the mammal fauna of Colombia, data in the literature on the occurrence of parasites and pathogens in these mammals are scarce and widely scattered. In order to understand the state of the knowledge of pathogens carried by wild mammals in Colombia, a systematic review of …

Eye Tracking Food Cues In Subjects Who Are Overweight/Obese, Weight Loss Maintainers, And Normal Weight, Carrie A. Petro

Master's Theses

Adult obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Increasing success in weight loss maintenance will decrease the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and therefore help control the adverse health effects of excess weight. Much is known about the behavioral characteristics of successful long-term weight loss maintenance, but less is known about the cognitive processes behind weight loss maintenance. The purposes of this study were to (1) identify differences in visual attention to high-energy dense foods between individuals who are normal weight, weight loss maintainers, and overweight/obese in a high-risk (food-buffet) situation; (2) to evaluate differences in food choices from …

Structural And Dynamic Analysis Of Wild And Splice Variants Human Μ-Opiod Receptors In Complex With Morphine And Ibntxa And Human Topoisomerase Ii Alpha Mutational Basis Of Amsacrine Resistance, Safaa Sader Sep 2016

Structural And Dynamic Analysis Of Wild And Splice Variants Human Μ-Opiod Receptors In Complex With Morphine And Ibntxa And Human Topoisomerase Ii Alpha Mutational Basis Of Amsacrine Resistance, Safaa Sader

Theses and Dissertations

Morphine prescribing is limited by its high addiction tendency and other serious effects. Recent animal’s biological studies on Mu 6TM splice variants, which mainly include G1, G2 and Mu3, supported a high safety and potency profiles of IBNtxA as potential alternative of Morphine. Nevertheless, there is no high-resolution structures of these 6TM variants, and the detailed structural features and dynamic characteristics of these splice variants remain elusive. We applied homology modeling and MD simulation to probe the structural, dynamic and ligand binding differences between the wild type (7TM) and two major truncated 6TM variants (G1 and G2). MD results underscored …

Leaving Behind Our Preparadigmatic Past: Professional Psychology As A Unified Clinical Science, Timothy P. Melchert Sep 2016

Leaving Behind Our Preparadigmatic Past: Professional Psychology As A Unified Clinical Science, Timothy P. Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The behavioral and neurosciences have made remarkable progress recently in advancing the scientific understanding of human psychology. Though research in many areas is still in its early stages, knowledge of many psychological processes is now firmly grounded in experimental tests of falsifiable theories and supports a unified, paradigmatic understanding of human psychology that is thoroughly consistent with the rest of the natural sciences. This new body of knowledge poses critical questions for professional psychology, which still often relies on the traditional theoretical orientations and other preparadigmatic practices for guiding important aspects of clinical education and practice. This article argues that …

Hypothalamic Vitamin D Improves Glucose Homeostasis And Reduces Weight, Stephanie R. Sisley, Deanna M. Arble, Adam P. Chambers, Ruth Gutierrez-Aguilar, Yanlin He, Yong Xu, David Gardner, David D. Moore, Randy J. Seeley, Darleen A. Sandoval Sep 2016

Hypothalamic Vitamin D Improves Glucose Homeostasis And Reduces Weight, Stephanie R. Sisley, Deanna M. Arble, Adam P. Chambers, Ruth Gutierrez-Aguilar, Yanlin He, Yong Xu, David Gardner, David D. Moore, Randy J. Seeley, Darleen A. Sandoval

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Despite clear associations between vitamin D deficiency and obesity and/or type 2 diabetes, a causal relationship is not established. Vitamin D receptors (VDRs) are found within multiple tissues, including the brain. Given the importance of the brain in controlling both glucose levels and body weight, we hypothesized that activation of central VDR links vitamin D to the regulation of glucose and energy homeostasis. Indeed, we found that small doses of active vitamin D, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25D3) (calcitriol), into the third ventricle of the brain improved glucose tolerance and markedly increased hepatic insulin sensitivity, an effect that is …
