Plastid Osmotic Stress Influences Cell Differentiation At The Plant Shoot Apex, Margaret E. Wilson, Matthew Mixdorf, R Howard Berg, Elizabeth S. Haswell
Plastid Osmotic Stress Influences Cell Differentiation At The Plant Shoot Apex, Margaret E. Wilson, Matthew Mixdorf, R Howard Berg, Elizabeth S. Haswell
Biology Faculty Research
The balance between proliferation and differentiation in the plant shoot apical meristem is controlled by regulatory loops involving the phytohormone cytokinin and stem cell identity genes. Concurrently, cellular differentiation in the developing shoot is coordinated with the environmental and developmental status of plastids within those cells. Here, we employ an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant exhibiting constitutive plastid osmotic stress to investigate the molecular and genetic pathways connecting plastid osmotic stress with cell differentiation at the shoot apex. msl2 msl3 mutants exhibit dramatically enlarged and deformed plastids in the shoot apical meristem, and develop a mass of callus tissue at the shoot …

Proteomics Of Human Dendritic Cell Subsets Reveals Subset-Specific Surface Markers And Differential Inflammasome Function., K Worah, Ts Mathan, Tp Vu Manh, S Keerthikumar, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Dendritic cells (DCs) play a key role in orchestrating adaptive immune responses. In human blood, three distinct subsets exist: plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) and BDCA3+ and CD1c+ myeloid DCs. In addition, a DC-like CD16+ monocyte has been reported. Although RNA-expression profiles have been previously compared, protein expression data may provide a different picture. Here, we exploited label-free quantitative mass spectrometry to compare and identify differences in primary human DC subset proteins. Moreover, we integrated these proteomic data with existing mRNA data to derive robust cell-specific expression signatures with more than 400 differentially expressed proteins between subsets, forming a solid basis for …

How Could Consciousness Emerge From Adaptive Functioning?, Max Velmans
Animal Sentience
The sudden appearance of consciousness that Reber posits in creatures with flexible cell walls and motility rather than non-flexible cells walls and no motility involves an evolutionary discontinuity. This kind of “miracle” is required by all “discontinuity” theories of consciousness. To avoid miraculous emergence, one may need to consider continuity theories, which accept that different forms of consciousness and material functioning co-evolve but assume the existence of consciousness to be primal in the way that matter and energy are assumed to be primal in physics.

The Napo Basin in Ecuador is an important drainage of the Amazon Basin, the most biodiverse ecosystem for freshwater species. At the same time, this basin has conspicuous information gaps on its biodiversity patterns and human threats. Here, we estimated the diversity distribution patterns of freshwater vertebrates and invertebrates in the Napo Basin, as a tool for present and future management and conservation efforts. Also, we assessed the spatial congruence of the diversity patterns observed between aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates. For this, we compiled occurrence records for 481 freshwater vertebrate species (amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish), and 54 invertebrate …

Multi-species microbial communities play a critical role in human health, industry, and waste remediation. Recently, the evolution of synthetic consortia in the laboratory has enabled adaptation to be addressed in the context of interacting species. Using an engineered bacterial consortium, we repeatedly evolved cooperative genotypes and examined both the predictability of evolution and the phenotypes that determine community dynamics. Eight Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains evolved methionine excretion sufficient to support growth of an Escherichia coli methionine auxotroph, from whom they required excreted growth substrates. Non-synonymous mutations in metA, encoding homoserine trans-succinylase (HTS), were detected in each evolved S. enterica …

C-IMAGE data
This is a dataset of the marginal beta probability density functions (PDFs) representing the percent contribution of prey to predator diet. Predator and prey are provided at the level of functional groups, where functional groups correspond to those used in an Atlantis biogeochemical ecosystem model of the Gulf of Mexico published by Ainsworth et al. 2015 (NOAA Tech. Memo. NMFS-SEFSC-676). The PDFs have been provided in a CSV file, and also graphically (Fig1.tif, Fig2.tif, Fig3.tif, Fig4.tif). This data set only deals with predator groups that are fish. Note that this data is also provided in a summarized form (mode and …

Biofuels are an alternative to more traditional fuels, such as those derived from crude oil. Bioalcohols, including bioethanol and biobutanol, are produced from biomass through sugar fermentation and purification processes and thus they are a more sustainable alternative to reducing the CO2 footprint of transportation and mitigating climate change. In the short term they will find it difficult to replace hydrocarbon fuels due to direct competition with the food supply chain, although as new alternative raw materials and production processes are developed this hurdle will be overcome. The recovery of bioalcohols from fermentation broths includes a series of very …
Climate-Induced Habitat Fragmentation Affects Metapopulation Structure Of Arctic Grayling In Tundra Streams, Heidi E. Golden
Climate-Induced Habitat Fragmentation Affects Metapopulation Structure Of Arctic Grayling In Tundra Streams, Heidi E. Golden
Doctoral Dissertations
Climate change is altering ecosystems across the globe, with ecological and evolutionary consequences affecting species persistence and biodiversity. I investigated the effects of changing hydrology on Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) metapopulation structure, microgeographic differentiation, movement patterns and vital rates using neutral genetic microsatellite markers, remote sensing of PIT-tagged individuals, body condition and ovarian histology. Arctic grayling within the study area on Alaska’s North Slope comprised five distinct genetic clusters. River distance and dry zones were significant factors explaining genetic differentiation among locations. Migration was low and asymmetrical among genetic clusters, but higher from headwater populations to the large …

In this article we present 1H and 13C chemical shift assignments, secondary structural propensity data and normalized temperature coefficient data for N-terminal peptides of Connexin 26(Cx26), Cx26G12R and Cx32G12R mutants seen in syndromic deafness and Charcot Marie Tooth Disease respectively, published in “Structural Studies of N-Terminal Mutants of Connexin 26 and Connexin 32 Using 1HNMR Spectroscopy” (Y.Batir,T.A.Bargiello,T.L.Dowd, 2016)[1]. The mutation G12R affects thestructure of both Cx26 and Cx32 peptides differently. We present data from secondary structure propensity chemical shift analysis which calculates a secondary structurepropensity (SSP) score for both disordered or folded peptides and proteins using the difference between the …

The poem Pangur Bán [1] was written by an unknown Irish monk in the Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau, in southern Germany in the ninth century. The Abbey, founded in 724 by Saint Pirim, was a centre of learning in Europe for many centuries, reaching its apex under Abbot Berno of Reichenau (1008–48). The Christian church was the sole …

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity
Anthropocommensal rodents live in close proximity to humans in many habitats around the world. They are a threat to public health because of the pathogens they carry. Recent studies in Mérida, Yucatán, México, have shown that commensal rodents harbor potential zoonotic pathogens such as bacteria, helminths, and viruses. In this study, we describe reproductive and demographic parameters of house mice and black rats present in households from Mérida, Yucatán, México, a municipality located in a tropical region in southern México. Rodents were trapped in 142 households within the municipality of Mérida from 2011 to 2014. A total of 832 rodents …
