Histomorphology Of Cutaneous Glands Associated With Conspicuous Coloration In Selected Arkansas Anurans, Christopher Shelton Thigpen Sep 2016

Histomorphology Of Cutaneous Glands Associated With Conspicuous Coloration In Selected Arkansas Anurans, Christopher Shelton Thigpen

Student Theses and Dissertations

The histology and histochemistry of serous glands of Hyla chrysoscelis, H. cinerea, Lithobates palustris and L. sphenocephalus are described, herein for the first time. Light microscopy was used for examination of glands. The glands are merocrine, externally secreting and composed of a syncytium of secretory cells surrounding a central lumen bordered superficially by melanophores. Serous gland numbers were compared within individuals and between species within a genus to test for differences between skin patches and species with and without conspicuous coloration. It was hypothesized no significant differences would exist within individuals and between species of a genus. Significant differences were …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder in which aggregation-prone neurotoxic amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) accumulates in the brain. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, are small 50–150 nm membrane vesicles that have recently been implicated in the prion-like spread of self-aggregating proteins. Here we report that EVs isolated from AD patient cerebrospinal fluid and plasma, from the plasma of two AD mouse models, and from the medium of neural cells expressing familial AD presenilin 1 mutations, destabilize neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis, impair mitochondrial function, and sensitize neurons to excitotoxicity. EVs contain a relatively low amount of Aβ but have an …

Singlet Glycine Riboswitches Bind Ligand As Well As Tandem Riboswitches, Karen M. Ruff, Ayesha Muhammad, Phillip J. Mccown, Ronald R. Breaker, Scott A. Strobel Sep 2016

Singlet Glycine Riboswitches Bind Ligand As Well As Tandem Riboswitches, Karen M. Ruff, Ayesha Muhammad, Phillip J. Mccown, Ronald R. Breaker, Scott A. Strobel

School of Science Faculty Works

The glycine riboswitch often occurs in a tandem architecture, with two ligand-binding domains (aptamers) followed by a single expression platform. Based on previous observations, we hypothesized that "singlet" versions of the glycine riboswitch, which contain only one aptamer domain, are able to bind glycine if appropriate structural contacts are maintained. An initial alignment of 17 putative singlet riboswitches indicated that the single consensus aptamer domain is flanked by a conserved peripheral stem-loop structure. These singlets were sorted into two subtypes based on whether the active aptamer domain precedes or follows the peripheral stem-loop, and an example of each subtype of …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Observed during CRC tumorigenesis is loss of post-transcriptional regulation of tumor-promoting genes such as COX-2, TNFα and VEGF. Overexpression of the RNA-binding protein HuR (ELAVL1) occurs during colon tumorigenesis and is abnormally present within the cytoplasm, where it post-transcriptionally regulates genes through its interaction with 3'UTR AU-rich elements (AREs). Here, we examine the therapeutic potential of targeting HuR using MS-444, a small molecule HuR inhibitor. Treatment of CRC cells with MS-444 resulted in growth inhibition and increased apoptotic gene expression, while similar treatment doses …

Simulation Of Shade Tree Effects On Residential Energy Consumption In Four U.S. Cities, Won Hoi Hwang, P. Eric Wiseman, Valerie A. Thomas Sep 2016

Simulation Of Shade Tree Effects On Residential Energy Consumption In Four U.S. Cities, Won Hoi Hwang, P. Eric Wiseman, Valerie A. Thomas

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Strategically placed trees can modify urban temperatures by casting shade and thus affect energy consumption for residential cooling and heating. Energy conservation benefits are influenced by the quantity as well as the quality of tree shade upon building surfaces. In this study, we employed an energy simulation program called EnergyPlus as a means to evaluate the effect of a single shade tree upon a structure model having a floor area of 200 m2 in four U.S. cities. Results of EnergyPlus simulations with various single tree planting configurations showed that a large tree on the west aspect of a structure …

Integrating Ecosystem Services Into Urban Park Planning & Design, Dorothy C. Ibes Sep 2016

Integrating Ecosystem Services Into Urban Park Planning & Design, Dorothy C. Ibes

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban parks, which include a variety of green, brown, and gray infrastructure (e.g. greenways, native desert parks, plazas), are key providers of ecosystem services within cities. Given the importance of urban ecosystem services to the social and ecological health of urban ecosystems, there is a growing consensus that ecosystem service considerations should be integrated into urban park planning, policy, and design. Yet this integration is limited by a lack of relevant, accessible tools and standards for implementation. To address these deficiencies the present study developed the Urban Park Ecosystem Services (UPES) tool. UPES an open-source, geographically contextualized planning tool and …

Increasing Shipping Traffic Through The Bering Strait: Challenges Of International Policy In A Rapidly Changing Climate And Managing Impacts To Regional Cetacean Populations, Laura Morse Sep 2016

Increasing Shipping Traffic Through The Bering Strait: Challenges Of International Policy In A Rapidly Changing Climate And Managing Impacts To Regional Cetacean Populations, Laura Morse

HCNSO Student Capstones

The Arctic region is experiencing growth in marine traffic as seasonal ice conditions shift to longer periods of open water and vessel improvements that have allowed for transit in heavier ice conditions. Regionally, Russia is improving existing transportation infrastructure to support increased traffic along the Northern Sea Route. As a result of these and other factors, shipping traffic is increasing through the Bering Strait and Bering Sea. Regulating traffic in these areas is more complex than most other areas in US waters given the presence of an international strait subject to international regulation through the International Maritime Organization. The US …

Vegetarian Versus Meat-Based Diets For Companion Animals, Andrew Knight, Madelaine Leitsberger Sep 2016

Vegetarian Versus Meat-Based Diets For Companion Animals, Andrew Knight, Madelaine Leitsberger

Nutrition Collection

Companion animal owners are increasingly concerned about the links between degenerative health conditions, farm animal welfare problems, environmental degradation, fertilizers and herbicides, climate change, and causative factors; such as animal farming and the consumption of animal products. Accordingly, many owners are increasingly interested in vegetarian diets for themselves and their companion animals. However, are vegetarian canine and feline diets nutritious and safe? Four studies assessing the nutritional soundness of these diets were reviewed, and manufacturer responses to the most recent studies are provided. Additional reviewed studies examined the nutritional soundness of commercial meat-based diets and the health status of cats …

Under Pressure: Cetaceans And Fisheries Co-Occurrence Off The Coasts Of Ghana And Côte D’Ivoire (Gulf Of Guinea), Marijke N. De Boer, James T. Saulino, Koen Van Waerebeek, Geert Aarts

Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection

Within the Gulf of Guinea high levels of fisheries-related cetacean mortality (bycatch and direct-capture) has been documented. For locally rare species such removals could potentially lead to significant population level effects. However, information on the cetacean abundance and distribution is scarce. Similarly, it remains largely unreported where fishing fleets operate offshore. A cetacean survey took place during geophysical surveys (2013–2014) along the coasts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. This provided a unique opportunity to study both offshore cetacean and fishing communities. Due to large group-sizes, melon-headed whales were the most abundant (0.34 animals km−1) followed by Fraser’s dolphins and short-finned …

The Pribram – Bohm Hypothesis Part Ii: The Physiology Of Consciousness, Shelli R. Joye Sep 2016

The Pribram – Bohm Hypothesis Part Ii: The Physiology Of Consciousness, Shelli R. Joye

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

A physiology of consciousness is elaborated, based upon implications of the Pribram-Bohm hypothesis (developed in Part I of this series). The model presented here is in sharp contrast to the prevailing conviction among neuroscientists that consciousness will eventually be discovered to be a physiological epiphenomenon of neuronal electrical impulses firing in the brain. In contrast, the Pribram-Bohm theory holds that consciousness, inherent in what Bohm views cosmologically as “the Whole,” manifests as a dynamic conscious energy resonance bridging the explicate space-time domain with the nonlocal, transcendent flux domain termed the “implicate order.” Presented in Part I, the Pribram-Bohm hypothesis posits …

Peat fires in Southeast Asia have become a major annual source of trace gases and particles to the regional-global atmosphere. The assessment of their influence on atmospheric chemistry, climate, air quality, and health has been uncertain partly due to a lack of field measurements of the smoke characteristics. During the strong 2015 El Niño event we deployed a mobile smoke sampling team in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo and made the first, or rare, field measurements of trace gases, aerosol optical properties, and aerosol mass emissions for authentic peat fires burning at various depths …

Structural Basis For Negative Allosteric Modulation Of Glun2a-Containing Nmda Receptors, Feng Yi, Tung-Chung Mou, Katherine N. Dorsett, Robert A. Volkmann, Frank S. Menniti, Stephen R. Sprang, Kasper B. Hansen

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

NMDA receptors mediate excitatory synaptic transmission and regulate synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system, but their dysregulation is also implicated in numerous brain disorders. Here, we describe GluN2A-selective negative allosteric modulators (NAMs) that inhibit NMDA receptors by stabilizing the apo state of the GluN1 ligand-binding domain (LBD), which is incapable of triggering channel gating. We describe structural determinants of NAM binding in crystal structures of the GluN1/2A LBD heterodimer, and analyses of NAM-bound LBD structures corresponding to active and inhibited receptor states reveal a molecular switch in the modulatory binding site that mediate the allosteric inhibition. NAM binding causes …
