Measurement Of Copper Deficiency In Humans: Ccs As A Novel Biomarker Of Copper Status In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Emily Watson Sep 2016

Measurement Of Copper Deficiency In Humans: Ccs As A Novel Biomarker Of Copper Status In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Emily Watson

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Bariatric surgery is a popular and effective treatment for obesity. However, an unfavorable consequence for patients who have had bariatric surgery is copper (Cu) deficiency. Current screening methods used for Cu deficiency are neither sensitive nor specifi c enough to diagnose Cu deficiency or detect changes in Cu status. The purpose of this research is to determine if concentrations of copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase (CCS) in erythrocytes are associated with serum Cu concentrations in bariatric surgery patients, by assessing whether changes in CCS concentrations can be observed in response to altering Cu status when patients are supplemented with Cu …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Series Of Uranium(Iv) Species: Investigating Coordination With A Redox Innocent Triamine Ligand, Selena L. Staun Sep 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Series Of Uranium(Iv) Species: Investigating Coordination With A Redox Innocent Triamine Ligand, Selena L. Staun

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Investigation of uranium(IV) complexes chelated by a tridentate amine, H3RITA (H3RITA = (MesNHCH2CH2)2NH, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), has afforded novel new compounds with the potential for small molecule activation. Deprotonation of H3RITA with two equivalents of benzyl potassium affords K2HRITA, which upon reaction with uranium tetrachloride forms (THF)2UCl2(HRITA) (THF = tetrahydrofuran). The labile THF molecules are easily substituted for triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3), a much stronger ligand, forming (Ph3PO)UCl2(HRITA). Installation of a cyclopentadienyl ligand, Cp* (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), was achieved …

Anisotropy Scanning: Novel Imaging Analysis For Beef Tenderness, Derico Setyabrata Sep 2016

Anisotropy Scanning: Novel Imaging Analysis For Beef Tenderness, Derico Setyabrata

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Providing consistently high-eating-quality meat products to consumers is crucial for the meat industry. Inconsistent meat tenderness has been identified as one of the major quality-related challenges for the meat industry. Thus, development of a precise and consistent method to predict meat tenderness will greatly benefit the meat industry by enabling it to ensure a constant high-quality meat supply to consumers. A novel noninvasive anisotropic image scanning technology has been recently developed to evaluate and predict microstructural and physicochemical changes in muscle. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the novel anisotropic imaging system in assessing …

Degeneration Of Neuronal Mitochondria In Parkinson’S Disease: Mitochondrial Turnover In Neuromuscular Junctions Of Parkin Mutants., Kenny Nguyen Sep 2016

Degeneration Of Neuronal Mitochondria In Parkinson’S Disease: Mitochondrial Turnover In Neuromuscular Junctions Of Parkin Mutants., Kenny Nguyen

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The accumulation of dysfunctional or damaged mitochondria in neurons has been linked to the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. It has been proposed that the Parkinson’s-related proteins PINK1 and Parkin regulate mitochondrial quality control by selectively targeting depolarized mitochondria for autophagic degradation, a process known as mitophagy. The compartmentalization of mitochondrial turnover in neurons still remains unclear, but evidence suggests that mitochondria are locally degraded in the distal axon and perhaps in the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). To study this, intact Drosophila nervous systems were analyzed in vivo by performing gentle dissections on third instar larvae to expose …

An Item Response Theory Analysis Of Emotional Expressivity Measures, Melissa K. Matheys Sep 2016

An Item Response Theory Analysis Of Emotional Expressivity Measures, Melissa K. Matheys

Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of psychometric properties of emotional expressivity measures is often limited to rudimentary statistics. The present study investigated, in depth, the psychometric properties of four measures of emotional expressivity (the Self-Concealment Scale, the Distress Disclosure Index, the Emotional Expressivity Scale, and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire – Suppression subscale). Item response theory (IRT) analyses suggested that recoded versions of the measures’ Likert scales may be beneficial in practice as well as the deletion of some measures’ items. IRT analyses of the four measures of emotional expressivity provide more information than classical test theory statistics about how to implement these measures …

Ben Domain Protein Elba2 Can Functionally Substitute For Linker Histone H1 In Drosophila In Vivo, Na Xu, Xingwu Lu, Harsh Kavi, Alexander V. Emelyanov, Travis J. Bernardo, Elena Vershilova, Arthur I. Skoultchi, Dmitry V. Fyodorov Sep 2016

Ben Domain Protein Elba2 Can Functionally Substitute For Linker Histone H1 In Drosophila In Vivo, Na Xu, Xingwu Lu, Harsh Kavi, Alexander V. Emelyanov, Travis J. Bernardo, Elena Vershilova, Arthur I. Skoultchi, Dmitry V. Fyodorov

Publications and Research

Metazoan linker histones are essential for development and play crucial roles in organization of chromatin, modification of epigenetic states and regulation of genetic activity. Vertebrates express multiple linker histone H1 isoforms, which may function redundantly. In contrast, H1 isoforms are not present in Dipterans, including D. melanogaster, except for an embryo-specific, distantly related dBigH1. Here we show that Drosophila BEN domain protein Elba2, which is expressed in early embryos and was hypothesized to have insulator-specific functions, can compensate for the loss of H1 in vivo. Although the Elba2 gene is not essential, its mutation causes a disruption of normal internucleosomal …

Electrochemical Nanoprobes For Electron Transfer Kinetics And Electrocatalysis Study, Yun Yu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The studies of electrochemical processes on the nanoscale have led to a significant progress in understanding of electrochemical mechanisms and characterization of nanomaterials in the fields of energy, catalysis, and biological research. Electrochemical experiments at nanoscale require the fabrication and characterization of nanometer-sized electrochemical probes. The main advantages of the nanoprobes include very fast mass-transfer rate, high signal-to-noise ratio and extremely fine spatial resolution of electrochemical imaging. In the course of my Ph.D. research, different types of electrochemical probes were developed for measuring electron-transfer kinetics, probing single catalytic nanoparticles and sampling ultra-small volume of liquids.

We developed methodologies to fabricate …

Institutionalizing Environmental Justice: Race, Place, And The National Environmental Policy Act, Keith K. Miyake Sep 2016

Institutionalizing Environmental Justice: Race, Place, And The National Environmental Policy Act, Keith K. Miyake

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, I examine ways that the US National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and its primary enforcement mechanism, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, have reshaped the state as a site for racial and environmental conflict by institutionalizing a particular form of environmental justice within governmental decision making processes. Combining archival methods and legal analysis, I develop three case studies involving community struggles over the social production of space that each engage the EIA process to different effect. The case studies were selected based on what they reveal about the ways that the environmental justice framework intersects …

By inviting youth into the urban EE discourse, this study created opportunities to redefine what EE could look like when it is built on relevance to youth daily lives and is locally situated in urban settings. A critical urban environmental pedagogy, as conceptualized in this dissertation, brings together critical pedagogy and youth participatory action research to investigate the diversity of urban neighborhoods by youth who live there. These investigations reveal neoliberal urbanization processes and their …

My Mother Needs Me! Is It Possible To Stay Connected While Being My Own Person? The Object Relations Of The Latina “Dutiful Daughter”, Juliana Martinez Sep 2016

My Mother Needs Me! Is It Possible To Stay Connected While Being My Own Person? The Object Relations Of The Latina “Dutiful Daughter”, Juliana Martinez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Background: Latinas are culturally expected to be “dutiful daughters” establishing strong attachments and adhering to the traditional values characterized by loyalty, cooperation, respect and interdependence within family members. Conventional Latina mother-daughter bonds, therefore, are expected to be exceptionally close. Healthy mother-daughter closeness can be a valuable source of support while closeness without differentiation from the mother may result in a lack of independence and poor interpersonal and personal growth. Mutuality of autonomy, a dimension of object relations (OR) theory, focuses on the progression of separation – individuation from developmentally normative fused representations in infancy to highly differentiated self-other representations as …

Three Essays On The Effects Of Childbearing On Economic Well-Being And Health, Ramazan Onur Altindag Sep 2016

Three Essays On The Effects Of Childbearing On Economic Well-Being And Health, Ramazan Onur Altindag

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Chapter 1: Couples in Turkey exhibit son preference through son-biased differential stopping behavior that does not cause a sex ratio imbalance in the population. Demand for sons leads to lower ratios of boys to girls in larger families but higher ratios in smaller families. Girls are born earlier than their male siblings, and son-biased fertility behavior is persistent in response to decline in fertility over time and across households with parents from different backgrounds. Parents use contraceptive methods to halt fertility following a male birth. The sibling sex composition is associated with gender disparities in health. Among third- or later-born …

Phylogeny, Systematics And Biogeography Of Short-Tailed Opossums (Didelphidae: Monodelphis), Silvia E. Pavan Sep 2016

Phylogeny, Systematics And Biogeography Of Short-Tailed Opossums (Didelphidae: Monodelphis), Silvia E. Pavan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Short-tailed opossums (genus Monodelphis) comprise the most species-rich genus of New World marsupials, with 25 currently recognized species. Monodelphis comprise small, terrestrial species collectively widespread in South America, which makes the group potentially informative about biogeographic processes that have shaped the continental fauna. The genus exhibits striking variation in several phenotypic characters, notably pelage coloration, behavior, and reproductive strategies. This diversity is unique among Neotropical marsupials, and makes the group particularly interesting to investigate the evolution and the adaptive significance of phenotypic trait variation. Despite this potential, missing knowledge on phylogeny and basic taxonomy precludes broader studies on evolution …

Some 2-Categorical Aspects In Physics, Arthur Parzygnat Sep 2016

Some 2-Categorical Aspects In Physics, Arthur Parzygnat

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

2-categories provide a useful transition point between ordinary category theory and infinity-category theory where one can perform concrete computations for applications in physics and at the same time provide rigorous formalism for mathematical structures appearing in physics. We survey three such broad instances. First, we describe two-dimensional algebra as a means of constructing non-abelian parallel transport along surfaces which can be used to describe strings charged under non-abelian gauge groups in string theory. Second, we formalize the notion of convex and cone categories, provide a preliminary categorical definition of entropy, and exhibit several examples. Thirdly, we provide a universal description …
