Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles Dec 2016

Identifying The Complexity Of Bipolar Disorder, Brandie Marie Stiles

Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is a complex illness that is difficult to correctly diagnosis and treat. Experts estimate that a correct diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder may be delayed for up to 7-10 years after symptoms become problematic. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the complexity of diagnosing bipolar disorder, including diagnostic patterns, recommended treatment, and patient response. A focused ethnography, including in-depth interviews and a retrospective chart review, were completed to answer the research questions: 1) What is the nature of the experience of receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder? 2) What are the diagnostic and treatment …

Seaweed And Seagrass Mapping In Thailand Measured Using Landsat 8 Optical And Textural Image Properties, Satomi Kakuta, Wataru Takeuchi, Anchana Prathep

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Seaweed and seagrass beds are an important ecosystem in coastal zones. However, they are degrading because of various causes, such as the anthropogenic impacts of coastal development, aquaculture, overharvesting, and climate change. To contribute to the research related to coastal blue carbon and marine biodiversity as well as conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in coastal regions, the spatial distribution of benthic cover derived from satellite images can be the most practical tool for monitoring seaweed and seagrass beds. This study aimed at mapping the latest distribution of seaweed and seagrass in Thailand using Landsat 8 images. Thus, we …

The Persuasive Power Of Video Game Narratives: Addressing Empathy And Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness, Kristy M. Najarian Dec 2016

The Persuasive Power Of Video Game Narratives: Addressing Empathy And Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness, Kristy M. Najarian

Master of Arts in Communication

Many college students find themselves struggling with mental health problems (ACHA, 2015). Individuals with mental illness not only battle with the disease, but with the stigma society has developed toward them, leading to a diminished quality of life. Education and contact are two antistigma approaches utilized in this study (Corrigan & Watson, 2002). This thesis aims to understand players’ involvement in the video game narrative (i.e., narrative engagement and transportation) and its relationship with empathy and attitudes toward people with mental illness. As a way to alleviate stigma, college students (N = 97) were surveyed after playing the video game …

Predictive Modeling With The Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat2012) Prior To Design Development In Landscape Architecture: Learning From The Southwestern Medical District In Dallas, Texas, Layal Bitar Ghanem

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Landscape Architecture has recently seen a significant rise in evaluative studies among the scientific and professional community, perhaps as a result of growing concerns related to rapid urbanization, climate change, and environmental degradation (LAF, 2016; Ozdil, 2014). Several methods adopted in evaluative landscape architecture research have typically focused on landscape performance in post implementation conditions, with a relatively superficial use of technology to address contemporary urban problems. However, with the advancement of computer technologies, opportunities to assess and predict environmental landscape performance prior to design development in the site planning process have emerged. The purpose of this research is to …

Introduction

• Control of the mitochondrial ATP production by SR-derived Ca2+ signals includes local, nanodomain Ca2+ transfer from ryanodine receptors (RyR2) to the mitochondrial matrix (excitation-bioenergetics coupling).

• Ca2+ crosses the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) via the mtCU, a low-affinity Ca2+-activated Ca2+ channel complex.

• The surface area of cardiac IMM is extensively enhanced by cristae folding; however, mitoplast patch clamp studies showed mtCU current density the lowest amongst a range of tissues (Fieni 2012. Nat Commun).

Role Of A Plausible Nuisance Contributor In The Declining Obesity-Mortality Risks Over Time., Tapan Mehta, Nicholas M. Pajewski, Scott W. Keith, Kevin Fontaine, David B. Allison Dec 2016

Role Of A Plausible Nuisance Contributor In The Declining Obesity-Mortality Risks Over Time., Tapan Mehta, Nicholas M. Pajewski, Scott W. Keith, Kevin Fontaine, David B. Allison

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

CONTEXT: Recent analyses of epidemiological data including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) have suggested that the harmful effects of obesity may have decreased over calendar time. The shifting BMI distribution over time coupled with the application of fixed broad BMI categories in these analyses could be a plausible "nuisance contributor" to this observed change in the obesity-associated mortality over calendar time.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent to which observed temporal changes in the obesity-mortality association may be due to a shifting population distribution for body mass index (BMI), coupled with analyses based on static, broad BMI categories. …

Towards Clinical Photoacoustic Imaging: Developing Next-Generation Endoscopy Systems And Exploring New Contrast Agents, Chiye Li

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Photoacoustic imaging holds great clinical promise because it achieves high-resolution tomographic imaging at depths. Moreover, its strong spectroscopic imaging capability provides a wealth of molecular and functional information based on. Still, despite recent advances, existing photoacoustic systems cannot be readily applied in the clinical environment. This dissertation aims to push the frontier of clinical photoacoustic imaging from both technological and applicational perspectives.

The first part of this dissertation describes the development of photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE) systems for imaging human Barrett's esophagus and studying preterm birth. We have developed optical resolution-PAE, which significantly improved lateral resolutions, laparoscopic-PAE, which can guide minimally-invasive …

Developing High Purity Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived V2a Interneurons For In Vitro Investigation And Transplantation Following Spinal Cord Injury, Nisha Iyer Dec 2016

Developing High Purity Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived V2a Interneurons For In Vitro Investigation And Transplantation Following Spinal Cord Injury, Nisha Iyer

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Functional recovery following spinal cord injury has been attributed to plasticity in local interneuron populations, which are able to create novel circuits that bypass the inhibitory lesion to activate pre-existing motor pathways. Cell replacement strategies and growth factor delivery platforms often attempt to enhance these natural mechanisms of regeneration. The work of this thesis sought to overcome the major obstacle to manipulating specific interneurons for therapy: an inability to obtain large, enriched interneuron subpopulations for drug screening and transplantation. We focused on the generation of V2a interneurons, which normally coordinate a wide range of locomotor tasks in both the spinal …

Effects Of Temperature On Activity Of Aquatic Hyphomycetes: A Microcosm Study, Kyra Harrington‌‌ Dec 2016

Effects Of Temperature On Activity Of Aquatic Hyphomycetes: A Microcosm Study, Kyra Harrington‌‌

Honors Theses

Predicted increases in temperature under climate change scenarios are expected to affect not only atmospheric and water temperatures, but also the rate of heterotrophic activity and carbon dynamics and retention in ecosystems. The magnitude of the increase in metabolic activity of living organisms with increased temperature can be predicted by the Metabolic Theory of Ecology, however, multiple factors can cause deviations from simple predictions. The goal of this study is to assess the temperature sensitivity of aquatic hyphomycetes and fungi-mediated leaf litter decomposition by following responses to temperature of fungal biomass accrual, respiration and decomposition rates in laboratory microcosms simulating …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Coastal zones located in populated and rapidly developing areas face high risks of natural and anthropogenic disasters. In this study, a framework was developed to determine the indicators of vulnerability to natural and anthropogenic disasters in Chuwei and Tamsui, two northern Taiwanese fishing villages in the coastal zone of the Tamsui River. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the vulnerability indices of the locations, with experts evaluating the weights assigned to a range of criteria, namely hydrological data (such as sea surface temperature and sea level), stakeholder perceptions, and fishery data. These two villages have a considerably …

Population And Trophic Dynamics Of Striped Bass And Blueback Herring In The Connecticut River, Justin P. Davis Dec 2016

Population And Trophic Dynamics Of Striped Bass And Blueback Herring In The Connecticut River, Justin P. Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

Case studies of the ramifications of predator management for prey population dynamics can play a valuable role in developing ecosystem fisheries management. My dissertation focuses on the predator-prey interaction between Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis), an abundant predatory finfish, and an imperiled prey population of anadromous Blueback Herring (Alosa aestivalis). Annual returns of Blueback Herring to the Holyoke Dam on the Connecticut River in southern New England collapsed during the 1980-2000s, coincident with Striped Bass recovery. I studied the abundance and demography of both species in the Connecticut River during 2005-08, measured predation levels, and surveyed the …

Bullying Experiences And Resilience In Lgbtq Youth, Melinda Mccormick Dec 2016

Bullying Experiences And Resilience In Lgbtq Youth, Melinda Mccormick

Dissertations

Many young LGBTQ people are experiencing bullying which can lead to increased risk of suicide, drug abuse, and depression, as well as an increased risk of out-of-home placements in either foster care or homeless shelters. As a result of this, LGBTQ young adults are often framed as being at risk. Although this has been helpful in the past in order to raise awareness of the challenges experienced by LGBTQ young people, there is also evidence that they show resilience in response to those challenges. In order to advance the social work value of being strengths-based, this research looked for examples …

Biogeography, Interspecific Introgression, And The Evolution Of Hemoglobin Genes In The High Andes: The Evolutionary History Of The South American Siskins (Spinus), Elizabeth Jane Beckman Dec 2016

Biogeography, Interspecific Introgression, And The Evolution Of Hemoglobin Genes In The High Andes: The Evolutionary History Of The South American Siskins (Spinus), Elizabeth Jane Beckman

Biology ETDs

Landscape features, interspecific introgression, and adaptation work in concert to shape the evolutionary history of a clade. Understanding the independent and cumulative consequences of these evolutionary processes on diversification is critical to revealing the origins of extant biodiversity. Studying these processes within rapid radiations, a significant contributor to global biodiversity, can provide powerful insight into the process of diversification. To assess how diversification is shaped by these evolutionary forces, I examined the biogeographic history, patterns of interspecific introgression and adaptation to high elevation in a recent, rapid radiation of finches, the South American siskins (Fringillidae: Spinus). I found that …

The Influence Of The Invasive Chinese Tallow (Triadica Sebifera) Leaf Litter On Aquatic Chemistry And Microbial Community Composition, Raymond D. Montez Dec 2016

The Influence Of The Invasive Chinese Tallow (Triadica Sebifera) Leaf Litter On Aquatic Chemistry And Microbial Community Composition, Raymond D. Montez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Global climate change and anthropogenic activity have facilitated the movement and invasive potential of nonnative plants in native environments. These invasions can have negative effects on ecosystem diversity and function. The nonnative and invasive plant, Chinese Tallow (Triadica sebifera), has already invaded much of the south eastern US where it is outcompeting native tree species and changing ecosystem diversity in a variety of habitats. Leaf litter from the Chinese tallow has been shown cause changes in dissolved oxygen and pH in the aquatic environment. Turbidity is also affected when Chinese tallow litter is present in water. A series of …

Development And Characterization Of Genetic Sensors And Regulators For The Construction Of Environmentally-Responsive Genetic Circuits, Allison Hoynes-O'Connor Dec 2016

Development And Characterization Of Genetic Sensors And Regulators For The Construction Of Environmentally-Responsive Genetic Circuits, Allison Hoynes-O'Connor

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Genetic circuits enable engineers to program complex logical behaviors into living organisms. Organisms can be programmed to optimize the production of fuels and chemicals, diagnose and treat diseases, or remediate environmental pollutants. A well-characterized toolbox of genetic sensors and regulators is needed to construct these circuits. Genetic sensors that respond to environmentally-relevant signals allow circuits to evaluate the cell's conditions, and versatile and designable regulators translate information about the cell's environment into the desired response. In this work, we demonstrate the de novo design of RNA thermosensors in Escherichia coli, and integrate these sensors into complex genetic circuits. Next, we …

Novel Contrasts In Photoacoustic Tomography, Ruiying Zhang Dec 2016

Novel Contrasts In Photoacoustic Tomography, Ruiying Zhang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) combines rich optical contrast and high ultrasonic resolution in optically scattering tissue at depths. Taking advantage of its 100% sensitivity to optical absorption, PAT has been widely applied to structural, functional and molecular imaging, with both endogenous and exogenous contrasts, at superior depths than pure optical methods. This dissertation explores novel absorption contrast mechanisms of PAT based on optical/thermal patterns, endogenous cellular chromophores, nanoparticles, small-molecule dyes and genetically-encoded proteins. With these novel contrasts, the proof-of-concept applications of PAT have been extended to include homogenous flow measurements, targeted angiogenesis imaging and therapy, label-free white blood cell imaging, 3D-whole-organ …

Characterizing Nonmodel Microorganisms And Reconstructing Catabolic Pathways For Bio-Productions, Whitney Hollinshead Dec 2016

Characterizing Nonmodel Microorganisms And Reconstructing Catabolic Pathways For Bio-Productions, Whitney Hollinshead

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

In the 1970s, spikes in oil prices sparked early interests into first-generation biofuels (i.e., the production of ethanol from corn). Four decades later, biofuel manufacturing has under-performed as developed industrial strains suffer from poor performance and high costs of feedstocks. While the advancement in molecular biology has greatly benefited pathway engineering, synthetic biology hosts still cannot overcome the obstacles for profitable microbial bio-production. One approach may be to study non-model organisms and employ their metabolic features towards an improved bio-production pipeline. Here, this thesis aims to develop 13C-metabolism analysis tools to characterize novel organisms and re-program cell metabolism using novel …

Modeling Negotiations Over Water And Ecosystem Management: Uncertainty And Political Viability, Rachael E. Goodhue, Susan Stratton Sayre, Leo K. Simon Dec 2016

Modeling Negotiations Over Water And Ecosystem Management: Uncertainty And Political Viability, Rachael E. Goodhue, Susan Stratton Sayre, Leo K. Simon

Economics: Faculty Publications

We present a modeling approach for generating robust predictions about how changes in institutional, economic, and political considerations will influence the outcome of political negotiations over complex water-ecosystem policy debates. Evaluating the political viability of proposed policies is challenging for researchers in these complex natural and political environments; there is limited information with which to map policies to outcomes to utilities or to represent the political process adequately. Our analysis evaluates the viability of policy options using a probabilistic political viability criterion that explicitly recognizes the existence of modeling uncertainty. The approach is used to conduct a detailed case study …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The current unprecedented expansion of infrastructure promises to enhance human wellbeing but risks causing substantial harm to natural ecosystems and the benefits they provide for people. A framework for systematically and proactively identifying the likely benefits and costs of such developments is badly needed. Here, we develop and test at the subregional scale a recently proposed global scheme for comparing the potential gains from new roads for food production with their likely impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Working in the Greater Mekong—an exceptionally biodiverse subregion undergoing rapid development—we combined maps of isolation from urban centres, yield gaps, and the …

Discovery And Characterization Of A Novel Class Of Metabolic Regulators In The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Ann Marie Guggisberg Dec 2016

Discovery And Characterization Of A Novel Class Of Metabolic Regulators In The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Ann Marie Guggisberg

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, infects hundreds of millions of people per year and causes hundreds of thousands of deaths. Within the host red blood cell, the parasite relies on glycolysis for energy and synthesis of essential biomolecules. One such anabolic fate of glucose is the synthesis of isoprenoids, a broad and essential class of compounds that participate in a variety of cellular functions. In the face of ever-evolving drug resistance, new inhibitors and better understanding of parasite metabolism are required. The antibiotic fosmidomycin (FSM) targets the methylerythritol phosphate pathway for isoprenoid synthesis and is a well-validated inhibitor of P. …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Optical remote sensing satellite images are a useful and convenient source to provide underwater features, particularly for shallow water areas because light, dependent on wavelength, has the capability to penetrate water. In this study, the information richness of underwater features is investigated for each spectral band of the optical images, and also several derived bands. This assessment is performed with the level-set method for segmentation. Two cases are analyzed in this study. The first study site is the Dongsha atoll, which is composed of Dongsha island, lagoon, and surrounding reefs. The water depth ranges from zero to less than 3 …

Changes In Male Hunting Returns, Raymond B. Hames Dec 2016

Changes In Male Hunting Returns, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Research on changes in male hunting among hunter-gatherers addresses two important issues in early human evolution: the nature of the family and trade-offs in mating and parenting effort as well as the development of embodied capital. In the hunter-gatherer literature, there is a debate about the function of male hunting that has implications for understanding the role males play in the evolution of the pair bond. The traditional model argues that male hunting and other economic activities are forms of male provisioning or parenting effort designed to enhance a man’s fitness through his wife’s reproduction and the survivorship of their …

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee Dec 2016

Risk Maps And Coastal Defense Criteria In Taiwan, Wei-Po Huang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Lee-Hsueh Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To promote sustainable development, the Coastal Zone Management Act prescribes that coastal areas should be divided into two levels of protection zones. However, the complexity and variety of coastal defenses and land use cannot be described completely by using these two levels alone. Coastal risk maps, based on natural and manmade characters of a region, showing different degrees of vulnerability and hazard potentials, can aid in making decisions. In this study, the criteria for coastal protection and land use in terms of risk maps were adopted. A tentative risk map was presented for the northern Kaohsiung City coastal area, Southwest …
