© 2016 The Author(s) 2016. Polar regions are warming more rapidly than lower latitudes, and climate models predict that this trend will continue into the coming decades. Despite these observations and predictions, relatively little is known about how polar ecosystems have responded and will continue to respond to this change. Two Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites, located in contrasting environments in Antarctica, have been studying marine and aquatic terrestrial ecosystems for more than two decades. We use data from these research areas to show that the extent and thickness of ice covers are highly sensitive to short- and long-term climate …

Gamochaeta (tribe Gnaphalieae, Asteraceae) is composed of ca. 60 species primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical America. Within the tribe Gnaphalieae, the genus is characterized by capitula arranged in spikes or head-like clusters, few hermaphroditic central florets, truncate style branches with apical sweeping trichomes, pappus bristles connate at the base into a ring falling as a unit, and achenes with globose twin trichomes. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies have suggested the paraphyly of the genus, but have not provided a basis for redefining generic limits due to incomplete taxon sampling. To address this problem, DNA sequences from the plastid (trn …

The gopher tortoise tick, Amblyomma tuberculatum, has a unique relationship with the gopher tortoise, Gopherus polyphemus, found in sandy habitats across the southeastern United States. We aimed to understand the overall bacterial community associated with A. tuberculatum while also focusing on spotted fever group Rickettsia. These tortoises in the Southern Mississippi region are a federally threatened species; therefore, we have carefully trapped the tortoises and removed the species-specific ticks attached to them. Genomic DNA was extracted from individual ticks and used to explore overall bacterial load using pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA on 454-sequencing platform. The spotted fever group …

Alleged Insanity: Frank Johnson Sr., Racial Injustice, And The Failure Of The Mental Health Care System In South Carolina, Jonathon P. Johnson

Senior Theses

This thesis is about Frank Johnson Sr. and the circumstances that led to his downfall as a farmer and father of six, to his tragic death in the isolation of a racially segregated mental institution 18 miles away from his home. Using his life and incarceration at the South Carolina State Park mental health facility, I argue that racial injustice contributed to his tragic death and the woefully inadequate treatment thousands of African Americans in South Carolina received during Jim Crow. Additionally, I argue that the tragic circumstances around my great grandfather’s institutionalization and death were part of an enduring …

Cedar Waxwings, Michael L. Avery, Anthony G. Duffiney Oct 2016

Cedar Waxwings, Michael L. Avery, Anthony G. Duffiney

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

Prevention and control of cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) damage to small fruits such as blueberry, cherry, and strawberry is vexing to growers in many parts of the United States. Cedar waxwings (Figure 1) travel in flocks and descend in large numbers on berry crops, especially during winter and migration. In short feeding bouts, waxwings eat, peck, or knock substantial amounts of fruit from the plants. These frugivores are difficult to discourage once they become established at a given location. Harassment early and often using pyrotechnics or other sudden noisemakers can help prevent flocks from being established. The most effective preventative …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: Production of the proatherogenic metabolite, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), from dietary nutrients by intestinal microbiota enhances atherosclerosis development in animal models and is associated with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease in humans. The utility of studying plasma levels of TMAO to risk stratify in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) has not been reported. Methods and Results: We examined the relationship between fasting plasma TMAO and all-cause mortality (5-year), stratified by subtypes of PAD and presence of coronary artery disease in 935 patients with PAD who underwent elective angiography for cardiac evaluation at a tertiary care hospital. Median plasma TMAO was …

Where Sovereign Immunity Ends And Liability Begins: A Functional Restructuring Of The United States Military Tort Compensation Scheme, Jordon Parker Oct 2016

Where Sovereign Immunity Ends And Liability Begins: A Functional Restructuring Of The United States Military Tort Compensation Scheme, Jordon Parker

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note critiques the current system of tort claims against the United States, particularly in cases involving the military, arguing that it is overly complex and fails to provide adequate compensation for injured individuals. It proposes replacing the existing tort system with a no-fault compensation scheme, similar to New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Act 2001, to better address the needs of victims.

Immunomodulatory Effects Of Psyllium Extract On Helicobacter Pylori Interaction With Gastric Epithelial Cells., Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Malik Hassan Mehmood, Z Abbas, Kanwal Tariq

Section of Gastroenterology

Natural plant product Psyllium has anti-inflammatory activity that can modulate the function of cytokines. We determined the effect of Psylliumhusk extract on interleukin (IL)-8 and NF-κB secretion by gastric epithelial cells in response to Helicobacter pylori Human gastricadenocarcinoma cell line (AGS) cells were pretreated with Psyllium extract in different concentrations before H pylori infection. Cell culture supernatant was analyzed for IL-8 and NF-κB by ELISA. RNA from cells was used for real-time polymerase chain reaction for messenger RNA expression of IL-8. Psyllium extract 5 and 10 μg/mL markedly (P < .001) lowered basal IL-8 by 64.71% and 74.51%, respectively, and H pylori-stimulated IL-8 was also (P < .001) lowered by 41.67% and 66.67%, respectively. Psyllium 5 and 10 μg/mL also reduced (P < .0001) cagA-positive H pylori-induced IL-8 mRNA expression by 42.3% and 67.6%, respectively. Psyllium also reduced (P = .0001) NF-κB in response to H pylori strains confirming its role as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Association Between Combat, Morally Injurious Experiences, Spiritual Injury, And Alcohol Use Among Active Duty Military Personnel And Veterans, Allison T. Robbins Oct 2016

Association Between Combat, Morally Injurious Experiences, Spiritual Injury, And Alcohol Use Among Active Duty Military Personnel And Veterans, Allison T. Robbins

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Literature has supported that, along with physical and psychological injuries, combat profoundly impacts veterans’ moral and spiritual belief systems and may contribute to negative health behaviors. Moral injury is a developing construct related to negative consequences associated with war-zone stressors that transgress military veterans’ deeply held values and belief systems. Additionally, spiritual injury addresses negative responses to an event that damages their relationship with God, self, and others, and alienates an individual from that which gives meaning to their lives. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between combat exposure, morally injurious experiences (MIEs), spiritual injury, …

Potential Impacts Of Climate Change On Photochemistry Of Zostera Marina L., Billur Celebi Oct 2016

Potential Impacts Of Climate Change On Photochemistry Of Zostera Marina L., Billur Celebi

OES Theses and Dissertations

Seagrasses account for approximately 10% of the ocean’s total carbon storage, although photosynthesis of seagrasses is carbon limited at today’s oceanic pH. Therefore, increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, which results in ocean acidification/carbonation, is predicted to have a positive impact on seagrass productivity. Previous studies have confirmed the positive influence of increasing CO2 on photosynthesis and survival of the temperate eelgrass Zostera marina L., but the acclimation of photoprotective mechanisms in this context has not been characterized. This study aimed to quantify the long-term impacts of ocean acidification on photochemical control mechanisms that promote photosynthesis while simultaneously protecting …

Bioenergetics: Experimental Demonstration Of Excess Protons And Related Features, Haitham A. Saeed Oct 2016

Bioenergetics: Experimental Demonstration Of Excess Protons And Related Features, Haitham A. Saeed

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Over the last 50 years, ever since the Nobel-prize work of Peter Mitchell’s Chemiosmotic theory, the question whether bioenergetics energy transduction occurs through localized or delocalized protons has been a controversial issue among scientists. Recently, a proton-electrostatics localization hypothesis was formulated which may provide a new and clear understanding of localized and delocalized proton-coupling energy transduction in many biological systems. The aim of this dissertation was to test this new hypothesis.

To demonstrate the fundamental behavior of localized protons in a pure water-membrane-water system in relation to the newly derived pmf equation, excess protons and excess hydroxyl anions were generated …

Design Of Drug Nano-Carriers For Study Of Multidrug Resistance In Single Live Cells, Pavan Kumar Cherukuri Oct 2016

Design Of Drug Nano-Carriers For Study Of Multidrug Resistance In Single Live Cells, Pavan Kumar Cherukuri

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Multidrug resistance (MDR) exists in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. MDR is responsible for ineffective treatment of a wide range of diseases, such as infections and cancer. The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) membrane transporters (efflux pumps) are one of the largest and most diverse super-families of membrane proteins found in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. All ABC transporters share a common structure of four core domains; two transmembrane domains (TMD) with variable sequence and topology and two nucleotide-binding domains (NBD) with conserved sequences. Conventional methods for the study of the efflux functions are radioactively labeled substrates and fluorescent …

Coarse Root Biomass And Architecture: Applications Of Ground Penetrating Radar, John Claude Bain Oct 2016

Coarse Root Biomass And Architecture: Applications Of Ground Penetrating Radar, John Claude Bain

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The effectiveness of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to identify and quantify coarse roots was tested in a mixed-oak forest in Southeastern Virginia using experimental pits and locally excavated root segments. GPR was found to be highly dependent on low soil moisture levels as it is unable to differentiate root structures if they possess similar moisture content as their surrounding soil. Likewise, GPR was unable to identify simulated dead roots. This does not alter the effectiveness of GPR to measure living coarse root biomass, but does present the potential for underestimation of carbon storage in coarse root structures, as a dead …

Prejudice Toward Atheists In The United States As Related To Perceived Prevalence, Wanda D. Brooks Oct 2016

Prejudice Toward Atheists In The United States As Related To Perceived Prevalence, Wanda D. Brooks

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

By manipulating mortality salience (MS) in place of life-threatening events to stimulate death-related thoughts, the current research contributes to the body of research supporting Terror Management Theory. It was hypothesized that religious participants should exhibit cultural worldview defense by scoring higher in anti-atheist prejudice following the MS manipulation than would those in the control condition. Further, this research extends the current research into Terror Management Theory as a cause for conflict among out-groups and explores its effects on cultural worldviews in the area of prejudice toward atheists. This includes examining how the perception of an increasing prevalence of atheists contributes …

Bioactivation Of Trimethoprim To Protein-Reactive Metabolites In Human Liver Microsomes., Jennifer Goldman, Yakov M. Koen, Steven A. Rogers, Kelin Li, J Steven Leeder, Robert P. Hanzlik Oct 2016

Bioactivation Of Trimethoprim To Protein-Reactive Metabolites In Human Liver Microsomes., Jennifer Goldman, Yakov M. Koen, Steven A. Rogers, Kelin Li, J Steven Leeder, Robert P. Hanzlik

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The formation of drug-protein adducts via metabolic activation and covalent binding may stimulate an immune response or may result in direct cell toxicity. Protein covalent binding is a potentially pivotal step in the development of idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions (IADRs). Trimethoprim (TMP)-sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a combination antibiotic that commonly causes IADRs. Recent data suggest that the contribution of the TMP component of TMP-SMX to IADRs may be underappreciated. We previously demonstrated that TMP is bioactivated to chemically reactive intermediates that can be trapped in vitro by N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and we have detected TMP-NAC adducts (i.e., mercapturic acids) in the …

The Urea Carboxylase And Allophanate Hydrolase Activities Of Urea Amidolyase Are Functionally Independent, Yi Lin, Cody J. Boese, Martin St. Maurice Oct 2016

The Urea Carboxylase And Allophanate Hydrolase Activities Of Urea Amidolyase Are Functionally Independent, Yi Lin, Cody J. Boese, Martin St. Maurice

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Urea amidolyase (UAL) is a multifunctional biotin-dependent enzyme that contributes to both bacterial and fungal pathogenicity by catalyzing the ATP-dependent cleavage of urea into ammonia and CO2. UAL is comprised of two enzymatic components: urea carboxylase (UC) and allophanate hydrolase (AH). These enzyme activities are encoded on separate but proximally related genes in prokaryotes while, in most fungi, they are encoded by a single gene that produces a fusion enzyme on a single polypeptide chain. It is unclear whether the UC and AH activities are connected through substrate channeling or other forms of direct communication. Here, we use …

Destabilization Of The Ornithine Decarboxylase Mrna Transcript By The Rna-Binding Protein Tristetraprolin, Shannon L. Nowotarski, Sofia Origanti, Suzanne Sass-Kuhn, Lisa M. Shantz Oct 2016

Destabilization Of The Ornithine Decarboxylase Mrna Transcript By The Rna-Binding Protein Tristetraprolin, Shannon L. Nowotarski, Sofia Origanti, Suzanne Sass-Kuhn, Lisa M. Shantz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the first and usually rate-limiting enzyme in the polyamine biosynthetic pathway. In a normal physiological state, ODC is tightly regulated. However, during neoplastic transformation, ODC expression becomes upregulated. The studies described here show that the ODC mRNA transcript is destabilized by the RNA-binding protein tristetraprolin (TTP). We show that TTP is able to bind to the ODC mRNA transcript in both non-transformed RIE-1 cells and transformed Ras12V cells. Moreover, using mouse embryonic fibroblast cell lines that are devoid of a functional TTP protein, we demonstrate that in the absence of TTP both ODC mRNA stability and …

Dipl 6277 Na Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

In today’s world, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the threat of bioterrorism, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. To what extent does health fit this new security agenda? What are the major linkages between health and security? Should non-communicable diseases be framed as problems that demand response from the national security community? How does the …

Down To The Felt: How Ohio's Lackluster Statutory Scheme Gambles With The Lives Of Mothers And Innocent Children, Jim Rainone

Journal of Law and Health

This article examines three facets of the pregnant prisoner prenatal and post-birth care issue. First, it examines the injustice that pregnant prisoners are subjected to. Next, it examines other states' statutory regimes to identify adequate and inadequate features. Specifically, it examines the Pennsylvania regime because of its relevance and reputation for being the most accommodating to these women. Finally, it proposes a statutory regime for Ohio that provides mandatory care standards, means of accomplishing mandatory care, penalties for both the institution and its individual actors when care is not provided--and shows how a statutory regime without these changes puts mothers …
