Impacting Middle School Girls’ Interest And Achievement In Math: Research On A Piloted Pre-Engineering Program, Linda S. Paslov Oct 2016

Impacting Middle School Girls’ Interest And Achievement In Math: Research On A Piloted Pre-Engineering Program, Linda S. Paslov

NERA Conference Proceedings 2016

A female’s college and career goals may ultimately be restricted by declining interest and achievement in mathematics that originates during her pre-high school years. This researcher examined how a piloted pre-engineering program in one eighth grade team impacted adolescent girls’ interest and achievement. The results suggest that Project Lead The Way impacted both boys’ and girls’ interest and achievement in mathematics. As this educational research was undertaken to assist local decision makers in supporting or opposing a district adoption of PLTW for all middle schoolers, effectively communicating the results to the various stakeholders in an engaging, useful manner was paramount.

The pH (Low) Insertion Peptides (pHLIP® peptides) find application in studies of membrane-associated folding, since spontaneous insertion of these peptides is conveniently triggered by varying pH. Here we employed small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to investigate WT pHLIP® peptide oligomeric state in solution at high concentrations and monitor changes in liposome structure upon peptide insertion into the bilayer. We established that even at high concentrations (up to 300 μM) WT pHLIP® peptide at pH 8.0 does not form oligomers higher than tetramers (which exhibit concentration-dependent transfer to monomeric state as it was shown previously). This finding has significance for medical …

Purpose

Acidification of extracellular space promotes tumor development, progression, and invasiveness. pH (low) insertion peptides (pHLIP® peptides) belong to the class of pH-sensitive membrane peptides, which target acidic tumors and deliver imaging and/or therapeutic agents to cancer cells within tumors.

Procedures

Ex vivo
fluorescent imaging of tissue and organs collected at various time points after administration of different pHLIP® variants conjugated with fluorescent dyes of various polarity was performed. Methods of multivariate statistical analyses were employed to establish classification between fluorescently labeled pHLIP® variants in multidimensional space of spectral parameters.

Results

The fluorescently labeled pHLIP® variants …

Bladder cancer is the fifth most common in incidence and one of the most expensive cancers to treat. Early detection greatly improves the chances of survival and bladder preservation. The pH Low Insertion Peptide (pHLIP® peptide) conjugated with a near infrared fluorescent dye (ICG) targets low extracellular pH allowing visualization of malignant lesions in human bladder carcinoma ex vivo. Cystectomy specimens obtained after radical surgery were immediately irrigated with non-buffered saline and instilled with a solution of the ICG pHLIP® construct, incubated, and rinsed. Bladders were subsequently opened and imaged, the fluorescent spots were marked, and a standard pathological analysis …

Consumer Product Chemicals In Indoor Dust: A Quantitative Meta-Analysis Of U.S. Studies, Susanna D. Mitro, Robin Dodson, Veena Singla, Gary Adamkiewicz, Angelo F. Elmi, Monica Tilly, Ami R. Zota

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Indoor dust is a reservoir for commercial consumer product chemicals, including many compounds with known or suspected health effects. However, most dust exposure studies measure few chemicals in small samples. We systematically searched the U.S. indoor dust literature on phthalates, replacement flame retardants (RFRs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), synthetic fragrances, and environmental phenols and estimated pooled geometric means (GMs) and 95% confidence intervals for 45 chemicals measured in ≥3 data sets. In order to rank and contextualize these results, we used the pooled GMs to calculate residential intake from dust ingestion, inhalation, and dermal uptake from air, and then identified hazard …

Epigenetics Of Lipid Phenotypes, Sergi Sayols-Baixeras, Marguerite R. Irvin, Donna K. Arnett, Roberto Elosua, Stella W. Aslibekyan

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Dyslipidemia is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the main cause of death worldwide. Blood lipid profiles are patterned by both genetic and environmental factors. In recent years, epigenetics has emerged as a paradigm that unifies these influences. In this review, we have summarized the latest evidence implicating epigenetic mechanisms—DNA methylation, histone modification, and regulation by RNAs—in lipid homeostasis. Key findings have emerged in a number of novel epigenetic loci located in biologically plausible genes (eg, CPT1A, ABCG1, SREBF1, and others), as well as microRNA-33a/b. Evidence from animal and cell culture models suggests a complex interplay …
