Cell Mechanics And Its Applications In Biomedical Engineering, Hongyan Yuan Nov 2016

Cell Mechanics And Its Applications In Biomedical Engineering, Hongyan Yuan

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Biophysics and mechanobiology of biological cells are important subjects to not only cellular physiology but also to biomedical engineering, such as nanoparticle-based drug delivery, nanomaterial cytotoxicity, and tissue engineering. Two main load-bearing structures of biological cells are cell membrane and cytoskeleton. These macromolecular structures are regulated by biochemical events when fulfilling their mechanical roles. On the other hand, they also act as mechanosensors to enable the mechanical forces to regulate the biochemical reactions in the cell. Therefore, mechanics and biochemistry are closely coupled for the cell. A better understanding of the complexity of cell mechanics and mechanobiology can help achieve …

Impact Of Dance Complexity On Computer-Based And Movement-Based Cognitive Performance, Sean Nicolle Nov 2016

Impact Of Dance Complexity On Computer-Based And Movement-Based Cognitive Performance, Sean Nicolle

Open Access Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Exercise improves cognition, but the specific mechanisms underlying these changes are not clear. Two proposed mechanism are aerobic demand and cognitive demand inherent in varying degrees to specific exercise tasks. This study compared two kinds of dance that differed in instruction complexity and aerobic intensity, ballroom (BR) and aerobic dance (Aero). The primary aim of this study was to determine if the cognitive benefits of exercise are more responsive to the complexity or aerobic overload. METHODS: Fourteen subjects aged 40-80 were randomly assigned to 8 weeks of Aero or BR dance classes. Aero classes were designed to emphasize low …

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best Nov 2016

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best

The Southeastern Librarian

As e-books have come to hold a major impact on library collection building activities, the influence of reviews of titles and the on-going conversion of titles to a digital format have significant potential impacts for libraries. Reviewing tools such as Choice and the lag-time between publication notice of the print edition of a work and its corresponding e-version asks the questions, “How many of the print titles that are reviewed in Choice have a corresponding e-version ready for purchase?” and “How used are those e-versions in comparison with print?”

The Cstf2t Polyadenylation Gene Plays A Sex-Specific Role In Learning Behaviors In Mice, Jaryse C. Harris, Joseph M. Martinez, Petar N. Grozdanov, Susan E. Bergeson, Paula Grammas, Clinton C. Macdonald Nov 2016

The Cstf2t Polyadenylation Gene Plays A Sex-Specific Role In Learning Behaviors In Mice, Jaryse C. Harris, Joseph M. Martinez, Petar N. Grozdanov, Susan E. Bergeson, Paula Grammas, Clinton C. Macdonald

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Polyadenylation is an essential mechanism for the processing of mRNA 30 ends. CstF-64 (the 64,000 Mr subunit of the cleavage stimulation factor; gene symbol Cstf2) is an RNAbinding protein that regulates mRNA polyadenylation site usage. We discovered a paralogous form of CstF-64 called τCstF-64 (Cstf2t). The Cstf2t gene is conserved in all eutherian mammals including mice and humans, but the τCstF-64 protein is expressed only in a subset of mammalian tissues, mostly testis and brain. Male mice that lack Cstf2t (Cstf2t-/- mice) experience disruption of spermatogenesis and are infertile, although female fertility is unaffected. However, …

Mechanistic Investigation Toward A Microkinetic Model For Decarboxylation Of Gamma Valerolactone Over Silica Alumina, Christian Suhngwa Jungong Nov 2016

Mechanistic Investigation Toward A Microkinetic Model For Decarboxylation Of Gamma Valerolactone Over Silica Alumina, Christian Suhngwa Jungong

Theses - ALL

γ-valerolactone (GVL) ring opening- and decarboxylation rates were measured over amorphous silica alumina (SiO2/Al2O3) catalyst in the gas phase, using a down configuration fixed bed reactor, operating under anhydrous and differential conditions. By varying temperature, space time and GVL partial pressure, measured rates were leveraged to determine kinetic parameters (apparent activation barriers and pre-exponential factors) for the ring opening and decarboxylation step, as well as thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy- and entropy of reaction) for the ring opening step. The experimentally measured parameters were applied for the development of a microkinetic model that quantitatively describes the overall kinetics involved in the decarboxylation …

Mathematical Models Are A Powerful Method To Understand And Control The Spread Of Huanglongbing, Rachel A Taylor, Erin A Mordecai, Christopher A Gilligan, Jason R. Rohr, Leah R Johnson

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening, is a global citrus disease occurring in almost all citrus growing regions. It causes substantial economic burdens to individual growers, citrus industries and governments. Successful management strategies to reduce disease burden are desperately needed but with so many possible interventions and combinations thereof it is difficult to know which are worthwhile or cost-effective. We review how mathematical models have yielded useful insights into controlling disease spread for other vector-borne plant diseases, and the small number of mathematical models of HLB. We adapt a malaria model to HLB, by including temperature-dependent psyllid traits, "flushing" of trees, …

© 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim This review focuses on a group of heme peroxidases that retain the catalase fold in structure, yet show little or no reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Instead of having a role in oxidative defense, these enzymes are involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis. The prototypical enzyme is catalase-related allene oxide synthase, an enzyme that converts a specific fatty acid hydroperoxide to the corresponding allene oxide (epoxide). Other catalase-related enzymes form allylic epoxides, aldehydes, or a bicyclobutane fatty acid. In all catalases (including these relatives), a His residue on the distal face of the …

A Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Obesity Among College Women, Holly Ann Keating Nov 2016

A Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Obesity Among College Women, Holly Ann Keating

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Overweight and obesity are particularly saient concerns for adolescents and young adults, the age group with the greatest risk of weight gain each year. The present study examined differences in behavioral economic measures of food reinforcement and delay discounting among normal weight women compared to overweight and obese adult women. Effects of symptoms of depression and ethnicity were also examined. Young adult women were given a variety of questionnaires. The current study hypothesized that overweight and obese women would rate food images as being more pleasant, discount money more steeply, have higher food-related reinforcement, and higher demand for food. Overweight …

Memorable Audiovisual Narratives Synchronize Sensory And Supramodal Neural Responses, Samantha S. Cohen, Lucas C. Parra Nov 2016

Memorable Audiovisual Narratives Synchronize Sensory And Supramodal Neural Responses, Samantha S. Cohen, Lucas C. Parra

Publications and Research

Our brains integrate information across sensory modalities to generate perceptual experiences and form memories. However, it is difficult to determine the conditions under which multisensory stimulation will benefit or hinder the retrieval of everyday experiences. We hypothesized that the determining factor is the reliability of information processing during stimulus presentation, which can be measured through intersubject correlation of stimulus-evoked activity. We therefore presented biographical auditory narratives and visual animations to 72 human subjects visually, auditorily, or combined, while neural activity was recorded using electroencephalography. Memory for the narrated information, contained in the auditory stream, was tested 3 weeks later. While …

Biology Faculty Research

Mitochondria must maintain tight control over the electrochemical gradient across their inner membrane to allow ATP synthesis while maintaining a redox-balanced electron transport chain and avoiding excessive reactive oxygen species production. However, there is a scarcity of knowledge about the ion transporters in the inner mitochondrial membrane that contribute to control of membrane potential. We show that loss of MSL1, a member of a family of mechanosensitive ion channels related to the bacterial channel MscS, leads to increased membrane potential of Arabidopsis mitochondria under specific bioenergetic states. We demonstrate that MSL1 localises to the inner mitochondrial membrane. When expressed in …

Diverse, Noisy And Parallel: A New Spiking Neural Network Approach For Humanoid Robot Control, Rd Azambuja, A Cangelosi, Sv Adams

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

How exactly our brain works is still an open question, but one thing seems to be clear: biological neural systems are computationally powerful, robust and noisy. Using the Reservoir Computing paradigm based on Spiking Neural Networks, also known as Liquid State Machines, we present results from a novel approach where diverse and noisy parallel reservoirs, totalling 3,000 modelled neurons, work together receiving the same averaged feedback. Inspired by the ideas of action learning and embodiment we use the safe and flexible industrial robot BAXTER in our experiments. The robot was taught to draw three different 2D shapes on top of …

Three Dimensional Printing Of Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffold: Design, Structure, And Mechanical Properties / Mitra Asadi-Eydivand, Eydivand Mitra Asadi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Techniques to restore and replace bones in large fractures are still a major clinical need in the field of orthopedic surgery. Thus, tissue engineering is one of the most hopeful approaches for developing engineered alternatives for damaged bones. Scaffolds are important part of bone tissue engineering (BTE). They are three-dimensional (3D) porous structures that are expected to, at least, partially imitate the extracellular matrix (ECM) of natural bone. Due to the natural properties of bone that are similar to calcium-based ceramics, the fabrication of scaffolds with the same properties as patient’s bone and adaptability to fracture defect are still a …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Monosized Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Supported Lipid Bilayers For Targeted Therapeutic Delivery To Individual Cells, Paul Durfee Nov 2016

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Monosized Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Supported Lipid Bilayers For Targeted Therapeutic Delivery To Individual Cells, Paul Durfee

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSNP) supported-lipid bilayers, termed ‘protocells,’ represent a potentially transformative class of therapeutic and theranostic delivery vehicles. The field of targeted drug delivery poses considerable challenges that cannot be addressed with a single ‘magic bullet’. Consequently, the protocell has been designed as a modular platform composed of interchangeable biocompatible components. The mesoporous silica core can have variable size and shape to direct biodistribution and controlled pore size and surface chemistry to accommodate diverse cargos. The encapsulating supported lipid bilayer can be modified with targeting and trafficking ligands as well as polyethylene glycol (PEG) to effect selective binding, endosomal …
