A Novel Genetic Algorithm And Its Application To Optimize Manufacturing Schedules, Arash Nasrollahishirazi Jan 2016

A Novel Genetic Algorithm And Its Application To Optimize Manufacturing Schedules, Arash Nasrollahishirazi

Open Access Dissertations

John Holland and his colleagues at the University of Michigan introduced genetic algorithms (GAs) in 1992. The algorithmic coding of Genetic Algorithms was described by Goldberg. Since of the real world problems studied in operations research and management science are too complex to be solved by using conventional optimization techniques, genetic algorithms have been widely used in their solution. Furthermore, problems with stochastic characteristics are also typical in analysis, design, and operation of modern systems. Stochastic optimization methods are even more complex than deterministic methods. Since the 1960’s researches have tried to simulate biological process for solving hard optimization problems …

The Incremental Retributive Impact Of A Death Sentence Over Life Without Parole, Michael L. Radelet Jan 2016

The Incremental Retributive Impact Of A Death Sentence Over Life Without Parole, Michael L. Radelet

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In this paper, the author takes a closer look at retribution, which is the primary justification for the death penalty today in the United States and the main component of the additional punishment imposed by the death penalty over and above life imprisonment without parole (LWOP). While all criminal punishments, to varying degrees, punish both the inmate and his or her family, this paper argues that the death penalty’s added punishment over LWOP often punishes the family just as much as the inmate, and after the execution the full brunt of the punishment falls on the family. This added impact …

Retention And Reform In Japanese Capital Punishment, David T. Johnson Jan 2016

Retention And Reform In Japanese Capital Punishment, David T. Johnson

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article focuses on the failure of abolition and of death penalty reform in Japan in order to illustrate contingencies in the trajectory of capital punishment in the modern world. Part I describes three facts about postwar Japan that help explain why it retains capital punishment today: a missed opportunity for abolition during the American occupation of the country after World War II; the long-term rule of a conservative political party; and economic and geopolitical power that has enabled the country to resist the influence of international norms. Part II describes a few ways in which Japanese capital punishment has …

Beautiful Minds : Exploring The Healing Potentional Of Self-Refexive Art In Facing A Campus Mental Health Crisis, Molly Chapman Rossi Jan 2016

Beautiful Minds : Exploring The Healing Potentional Of Self-Refexive Art In Facing A Campus Mental Health Crisis, Molly Chapman Rossi

Honors Theses

This interdisciplinary study of mental health seeks to do three things:

1. Identify and investigate the issue of mental health among students within the University of Richmond campus community, through both statistical and ethnographic data,

2. Apply trauma theory to redefine the crisis as a community trauma with unique aspects, and

3. Make a case for hope by proposing a plan that uses self-reflexive art, specifically theatre, to address the individualized community trauma and second-wave trauma.

I explicate new theories in this work, among them the notions of “individualized community trauma,” “second-wave trauma,” and “traumatic fusion.” Another critical concept is …

How Does One Child Policy Influence Chinese Household Saving Behavior, Yueyang Cao Jan 2016

How Does One Child Policy Influence Chinese Household Saving Behavior, Yueyang Cao

Honors Theses

This paper investigates the influence the decline in the family size on household size through a Chinese family planning policy, the One-Child Policy (OCP). I find the evidence of the negative effect at the micro level using Chinese household survey data. I also study the aggregated effect using Chinese provincial level data. With the concern of endogeneity, I use a two-stage least square regression with financial punishments for having more than one child and share of population that were exempted from the restriction as instruments for the fertility variable. This regression shows a positive impact of the implementation of the …

Food Insecurity In Nepal : A Cross-Sectional Analysis From 75 Districts, Aarti Reddy Jan 2016

Food Insecurity In Nepal : A Cross-Sectional Analysis From 75 Districts, Aarti Reddy

Honors Theses

There are a number of studies regarding food insecurity, but not many that investigate the simultaneous relationships between food insecurity and the measures of well-being (health, education and gender equality). This paper conducts a district-level cross-sectional analysis of the relationship between food insecurity and the measures of well-being in Nepal using an ordered probit model. Instrument variables are used in a two-stage analysis to address the problem of endogeneity. The study finds that health deprivation levels significantly affect levels of food insecurity in a district but education and gender literacy disparity are less significant. Addressing issues of endogeneity and multicolinearity …

Synthetic Flexibility Of A Bromopyrrole Ester Intermediate : Toward Novel Biologically Active Compounds, Scott Cameron Yeudall Jan 2016

Synthetic Flexibility Of A Bromopyrrole Ester Intermediate : Toward Novel Biologically Active Compounds, Scott Cameron Yeudall

Honors Theses

Compounds containing the pyrrole ring as a core structural motif continue to show significant biological activity, and both natural product derivatives and novel chemical scaffolds show potential for use as pharmaceuticals in treating a variety of cancers, infections, and inflammation. Given the widespread and important applications of compounds containing this motif, novel, rapid, and selective methods for the synthesis of multifunctional pyrroles is of some importance. Previous work in our group has utilized palladium-mediated Suzuki cross-coupling as a powerful tool for functionalizing activated bromopyrrole esters, generating structural analogues of bioactive natural products. We have also used a similar approach to …

Computational Studies Of Paradifluorobenzene Cations And Hydrogen Cyanide Molecule, John C. Rowe Iv Jan 2016

Computational Studies Of Paradifluorobenzene Cations And Hydrogen Cyanide Molecule, John C. Rowe Iv

Honors Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hypothesized to comprise a significant portion of interstellar carbon identified from the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs). Gas phase cation-molecule reactions between compounds that previously existed as weakly bound species provides the best explanation for the emergence of PAHs in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we use computational methods to characterize one of these weakly-bound systems. We discovered that intramolecular charge distribution (calculated using the Natural Population Analysis) dictate the complexes formed between a paradifluorobenzene cation and either one or two HCN molecules. Additionally, the relative stabilities of the complexes and the binding energies …

Calcium (Ii) Catalyzed Nitrone Additions, Elizabeth A. Congdon Jan 2016

Calcium (Ii) Catalyzed Nitrone Additions, Elizabeth A. Congdon

Honors Theses

Calcium(II) complexes have be shown to be successful catalysts for nitrone reactions. The addition of n-‐methyl and n-‐phenyl nitrones to donor-‐acceptor cyclopropanes was achieved with calcium triflate (Ca(OTf). Differentially substituted tetrahydro-‐1,2-‐oxazines were synthesized in good to excellent yields. Calcium triflate was also found to catalyze the addition of silyl enol ethers to n-‐phenyl nitrones along the Mukaiyama-‐Mannich addition pathway. B-‐amino carbonyls were synthesized from a variety of substituted nitrones. Bulky and cyclic silyl enol ethers were also found to be reactive, the products of which were isolated in good to excellent yields.
