Marriage In The 21st Century: From A State Of Confusion To A State Of Being, Gemma Margaret Anne Barriteau Jan 2016

Marriage In The 21st Century: From A State Of Confusion To A State Of Being, Gemma Margaret Anne Barriteau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to interpret the lived-experiences of some individuals who viewed their long-term committed relationships as a marriage. This was done in order to begin to reveal the underlying meaning of marriage for some people in 21st century America. This hermeneutic phenomenological study used Bowlby’s (1969, 1982) Attachment Theory and Bronfenbrenner’s (1979, 2005) Bio-ecological Model of Human Development to explore how married individuals bond with each other and adjust to their bio-ecological environments. Van Manen’s (1990) Lived-Existentials were also used to interpret how these participants oriented to their lived experiences and interpreted their life stories.

Social Dimensions Of Alzheimer’S Disease Among Caregivers In Oaxaca, Mexico, Jonathan Yahalom Jan 2016

Social Dimensions Of Alzheimer’S Disease Among Caregivers In Oaxaca, Mexico, Jonathan Yahalom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides an analysis of the social construction of Alzheimer’s disease within Teotitlán del Valle, a rural Zapotec-speaking community in Oaxaca, Mexico. It explores how Alzheimer’s disease is locally understood, how this understanding reconfigures traditional meanings of old age, and how broader social issues are negotiated through this reconfiguration. Through 10 months of fieldwork this dissertation draws on ethnographic observations and interviews with 22 family caregivers across 9 households. This study is noteworthy for being the first known investigation in Teotitlán whose primary data was collected in the Zapotec language. Further, this dissertation integrates methods across psychology, gerontology, and …

Variation In The Amphibian Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Axis: Patterns, Mechanisms, And Implications, Jessica Thomas Jan 2016

Variation In The Amphibian Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Axis: Patterns, Mechanisms, And Implications, Jessica Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many vertebrate stress responses are mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal/interrenal (HPA/I) axis, which involves hypothalamic secretion of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) and increased plasma levels of glucocorticoid hormones (GCs) like corticosterone (CORT). Basal HPA/I activity is also imperative to maintaining homeostasis. Despite having crucial roles, HPA/I activity is variable and can be influenced by factors like environment, physiology, and life-history. HPA/I activity also influences reproduction and immunity. To better understand patterns of HPA/I variation (specifically CORT and CRF), we conducted several studies using plethodontid salamanders. Their low-energy lifestyle offers unique contrast to studies of stress physiology in high-energy animals like mammals …

The Social Obligation To Reduce Stigma In Order To Increase Utilization Of Mental Health Services, Melissa Sue Berdell Jan 2016

The Social Obligation To Reduce Stigma In Order To Increase Utilization Of Mental Health Services, Melissa Sue Berdell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many mental health organizations have developed campaigns that concentrate on reducing the stigma towards mental health with the intentions of increasing access and utilization for people with mental illnesses that are not receiving appropriate mental health services. The mental health campaigns predominantly focus on establishing awareness and education related to the number of people with mental illnesses and diagnoses so that people will not be ashamed or embarrassed to have mental illnesses or access mental health treatments. However, societal prejudices have caused many people diagnosed with mental illnesses to lose jobs, homes, and families; therefore, in general, people are afraid …

An Examination Of Maternal Stress And Secondhand Smoke Exposure On Perinatal Smoking Status, Karen R. Damron Jan 2016

An Examination Of Maternal Stress And Secondhand Smoke Exposure On Perinatal Smoking Status, Karen R. Damron

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

The median prevalence of smoking among women of childbearing age in the United States is 22.4%. Of women who identify themselves as smokers in the three months prior to conception, 55% quit during pregnancy; however, 40% of those who quit relapse and return to smoking within six months after delivery. Smoking has been identified as an important means of stress management among smokers in general, and though limited to the perinatal period, pregnancy-specific stress adds to a woman’s typical day-to-day stress burden. Little data exists as to the effect of SHS exposure on smoking status during pregnancy and the impact …

Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Of Nutrient Reduction Technologies Employed In Municipal Wastewater Treatment, Colin Barrett Brown Jan 2016

Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Of Nutrient Reduction Technologies Employed In Municipal Wastewater Treatment, Colin Barrett Brown

Honors Papers

Eutrophication presents a serious threat to America's aquatic ecosystems, negatively impacting both the aquatic life and the communities dependent on these bodies of water. Reducing nutrient inflow of nitrogen and phosphorus into waterways from point and non-point sources is critical in reversing the environmental degradation caused by eutrophication. Municipal wastewater treatment plants are one of the primary point sources of nutrient-rich effluent, and as such, implementing nutrient reduction strategies within the treatment process is an impactful step towards mitigating eutrophication. Grey infrastructure technologies that use mechanical or chemical treatment have historically been used for wastewater nutrient reduction. However, constructed wetlands …

Managing Racist Pasts: The Black Justice League’S Demand For Inclusion And Its Challenge To The Promise Of Diversity At Princeton University, Tomoyo Joshi Jan 2016

Managing Racist Pasts: The Black Justice League’S Demand For Inclusion And Its Challenge To The Promise Of Diversity At Princeton University, Tomoyo Joshi

Honors Papers

I examine online diversity initiative pages, student activism and administrative responses in Fall 2015 at Princeton University as a case study. In the first section, I analyze Princeton’s online diversity initiative page “Many Voices, One Future” by demonstrating how “diversity” becomes individualized, commodified, and quantified. In its claims to aspire to equality (or equal representation), the discourse of diversity ignores historical and sociopolitical contexts of oppression that produce and maintain difference in the first place. In the second section, I investigate how the actions of the Black Justice League challenge or the rhetoric of diversity that the administration embodies. Further, …

Inverted Quarantine: Individual Response To Collective Fear, Katherine Parker Moncure Jan 2016

Inverted Quarantine: Individual Response To Collective Fear, Katherine Parker Moncure

Honors Papers

In his 2007 book Shopping Our Way to Safety, sociologist Andrew Szasz coined the term inverted quarantine to describe a phenomenon in the way that Americans react to the changing natural environment. Inverted quarantine, or the impulse to remove one’s self from perceived environmental dangers, often manifests in consumption behavior such as consuming only organic food, drinking filtered or bottled water, moving from a city to a suburb, or even being enclosed in a gated community. Although inverted quarantine may result in some form of protection, in the long run it is unsustainable in the face of the changing natural …

Drawing Dna Sequence Networks, Julia Olivieri Jan 2016

Drawing Dna Sequence Networks, Julia Olivieri

Honors Papers

We explore methods for drawing a graph of DNA sequences on a digital canvas such that the Euclidean distances between sequences on the canvas suggest the distances between the sequences as calculated from pairwise sequence alignment. We use data from three plant taxa, the genus Castilleja as well as the families Caryophyllaceae and Cactaceae, to test our methods. We discuss different possible measures of the cost of a drawing, and analyze heuristic approaches to the problem including random assignment, greedy assignment, the iterated hill-climber, and simulated annealing. We find that our hill-climbing method tends to return superior drawings. Our simulated …

Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of Cretaceous Mudstones At Slope Mountain, Alaska Using Carbon Stable Isotopes, Ashley Ratigan

Honors Papers

This project uses field samples, microfacies analysis, and carbon stable isotopes of mudstones to determine past environmental conditions of North Slope, Alaska during the Albian-Cenomanian (Cretaceous). Samples were taken at Slope Mountain, Alaska located north of the Brooks Range. Slope Mountain includes the Torok Formation and the upper and lower Nanushuk Formations that consist of alluvial, deltaic, and shallow marine facies that were deposited into the North Slope foreland basin on the Arctic Alaska micro plate. An exhaustive search for identifiable microfossils, such as pollen, diatoms, and foraminifera in the samples yielded nothing but charcoal and carbon residue. No other …

Non-Optional Projects: Mathematical And Ethical, Alan Richard Baker Jan 2016

Non-Optional Projects: Mathematical And Ethical, Alan Richard Baker

Philosophy Faculty Works

This chapter examines how the general framework for indispensability arguments developed by Enoch in the metaethical context plays out in its ancestral home, the philosophy of mathematics. Enoch’s framework is inspired by the Quine–Putnam type of indispensability argument in mathematics and is liable to inherit the latter’s holism. But once this holism is expunged from Enoch’s framework it turns out that Enoch’s indispensability argument is stronger in the moral than in the mathematical case, since it is more plausible that normative entities are indispensible to all projects of practical deliberation than it is that mathematical entities are indispensible to all …

Consuming The Image: Hierarchies Of Beauty And Power In Us Latino, Colombian, And Dominican Cultural Productions, Angela Postigo Jan 2016

Consuming The Image: Hierarchies Of Beauty And Power In Us Latino, Colombian, And Dominican Cultural Productions, Angela Postigo

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation focuses on dominant contemporary depictions of women in order to investigate the related processes of producing and policing physical attractiveness and privilege in mainstream cultural productions. I examine how certain US Latina, Colombian, and Dominican female portrayals fit definite paradigms of ideal beauty and contribute to patterns of power within magazines, films and television, music, and literary novels. I explore the ways in which the majority of dominant representations in all three countries favor specific beauty ideals linked with an Anglo or Northern European archetype, thus limiting the acceptable model and excluding a great part of the racially …

Background: Most heavy metals from industrial catalysts are harmful to human body; however, to function normally, the human body does need traces of essential metal cofactors. Histidine is one of the nine essential amino acids to the human body, and cobalt(II) ion is cost effective and is known to be less toxic to the body. Methods: This project investigates the binding reactions between the cobalt(II) ion and histidine amino acids. Due to unsuccessful attempts to crystalize Cobalt(II)-Histidine complex in the lab, the quantum mechanics modeling package, G09, was employed to provide the binding mode and interaction between the metal and …

Running Past Landmines--The Estate Attorney's Dilemma: Ethically Counseling The Client With Alzheimer's Disease, Joseph Karl Grant Jan 2016

Running Past Landmines--The Estate Attorney's Dilemma: Ethically Counseling The Client With Alzheimer's Disease, Joseph Karl Grant

Journal Publications

This Article examines the ethical dilemmas faced by attorneys who represent clients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. To do so, this Article raises three (3) hypothetical case studies, and applies the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel ("ACTEC") Commentaries, where appropriate, to those hypothetical case studies. Additionally, this Article proposes initiatives to ameliorate the lack of awareness and discussion of Alzheimer's disease in the law school curriculum, and finally, modest initiatives that the practicing bar can embrace to further a discussion and awareness among practicing attorneys about the ethical dilemma attorneys face in …

High-Resolution Ground-Penetrating Radar Profiles Of Perennial Lake Ice In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Horizon Attributes, Unconformities, And Subbottom, Hilary A. Dugan, Steven A. Arcone, Maciej K. Obryk, Peter T. Doran Jan 2016

High-Resolution Ground-Penetrating Radar Profiles Of Perennial Lake Ice In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Horizon Attributes, Unconformities, And Subbottom, Hilary A. Dugan, Steven A. Arcone, Maciej K. Obryk, Peter T. Doran

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is not commonly used to study lake ice, and in general, the ground-based use of radar frequencies greater than 500 MHz in cryosphere geophysics is rare, due to a general interest in deeper stratigraphy and the difficulty of extensive profiling over rough snow surfaces. Our goal was to find further information on the origin of the deposition and formation of intra-ice layers, bottom topography, and subbottom deposits using GPR with pulses centered near 850 MHz on two permanently ice-covered lakes in the Mc- Murdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The profiles were obtained using a one-person sled operation over …

Response Of Antarctic Cryoconite Microbial Communities To Light, Elizabeth A. Bagshaw, Jemma L. Wadham, Martyn Tranter, Rupert Perkins, Alistair Morgan, Christopher J. Williamson, Andrew G. Fountain, Sean Fitzsimons, Ashley Dubnick Jan 2016

Response Of Antarctic Cryoconite Microbial Communities To Light, Elizabeth A. Bagshaw, Jemma L. Wadham, Martyn Tranter, Rupert Perkins, Alistair Morgan, Christopher J. Williamson, Andrew G. Fountain, Sean Fitzsimons, Ashley Dubnick

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Microbial communities on polar glacier surfaces are found dispersed on the ice surface, or concentrated in cryoconite holes and cryolakes, which are accumulations of debris covered by a layer of ice for some or all of the year. The ice lid limits the penetration of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) to the sediment layer, since the ice attenuates up to 99% of incoming radiation. This suite of field and laboratory experiments demonstrates that PAR is an important control on primary production in cryoconite and cryolake ecosystems. Increased light intensity increased efficiency of primary production in controlled laboratory incubations of debris from …

Pathogen identification and microbial source tracking (MST) to identify sources of fecal pollution improve evaluation of water quality. They contribute to improved assessment of human health risks and remediation of pollution sources. An MST microarray was used to simultaneously detect genes for multiple pathogens and indicators of fecal pollution in freshwater, marine water, sewage-contaminated freshwater and marine water, and treated wastewater. Dead-end ultrafiltration (DEUF) was used to concentrate organisms from water samples, yielding a recovery efficiency of >95% for Escherichia coli and human polyomavirus. Whole-genome amplification (WGA) increased gene copies from ultrafiltered samples and increased the sensitivity of the microarray. …

Beefing Up The Beefcake: Male Objectification, Boy Bands, And The Socialized Female Gaze, Dorie Bailey Jan 2016

Beefing Up The Beefcake: Male Objectification, Boy Bands, And The Socialized Female Gaze, Dorie Bailey

Scripps Senior Theses

In the traditionally patriarchal Hollywood industry, the heterosexual man’s “male gaze,” as coined by feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey, is the dominant viewing model for cinematic audiences, leaving little room for a negotiated reading of how visual images are created, presented, and internalized by male and female audiences alike. However, as Hollywood’s shifting feminist landscape becomes increasingly prevalent in the mainstream media, content incorporating the oppositional “female gaze” have become the new norm in both the film and television mediums. Through an extended analysis of the gaze as socialized through gendered learning in children, the “safe space” afforded through the …

Bars To Justice: The Impact Of Rape Myths On Women In Prison, Hannah Brenner, Kathleen Darcy, Gina Fedock, Sheryl Kubiak

Faculty Scholarship

This article stems from a National Science Foundation-funded interdisciplinary research project that addresses a major gap in understanding the reporting of sexual victimization in prison and the confluence of factors that contribute to the ineffectiveness of internal laws and policies. As a basis of this work, our cohort of scholars in law, social work, and psychology utilized data and personal narratives from the groundbreaking class action lawsuit, Neal v. MDOC, brought on behalf of over 800 female inmates against the State of Michigan. In this article, we identify the most prevalent rape myths we observed from women who were involved …

Antibiotic Efficacy And Interaction In Escherichia Coli During Varying Nutrient Conditions, Kristina K. Millar Jan 2016

Antibiotic Efficacy And Interaction In Escherichia Coli During Varying Nutrient Conditions, Kristina K. Millar

Scripps Senior Theses

Due to the recent rise in antibiotic resistant pathogens, and the difficulties surrounding the quest for new antibiotics, many researchers have started revisiting antibiotic interactions in hopes of finding new treatment options. The primary outcome of this project was to examine the efficacy of concomitant antibiotic use under varying nutrient conditions, to identify variations in antibiotic interactions. Antibiotic interactions were studied, utilizing E. coli as a model bacterial system, grown in four different media types. E. coli cultures were treated with streptomycin, tobramycin, erythromycin, and amikacin individually and in a pairwise fashion at varying doses. We found that at least …

S-EPS revealed higher flocculation activity (94.2%) and dewaterability (59.9%) than other types of EPS in kaolin suspension. The dewaterability of MWWS with 2 g suspended solids (SS)/L was improved by 37.6% using 0.02 ± 0.01 g/L of S-EPS …

Biosolids As A Roadside Soil Amendment, Edwin M. Fava Iii Jan 2016

Biosolids As A Roadside Soil Amendment, Edwin M. Fava Iii

Open Access Master's Theses

Vegetation is a critical component of the roadside environment. It supplies services that include stabilizing soil, filtering runoff and debris before it enters drains and water supplies, and providing visually appealing scenery for drivers. These services are threatened when soil is unable to provide an environment suitable to the needs of perennial vegetation, leading to annual, often invasive, species that out-compete and thrive in dry, low nutrient and disturbed habitats dominating the environment. As a means of improving the availability of the macronutrient nitrogen, a limiting nutrient for many plants, we amended roadside soil in Saunderstown, Rhode Island with seven …

Effects Of Residual Waste Material As Agricultural Soil Amendments On Soil Greenhouse Gas Fluxes, Ashley Waggoner Jan 2016

Effects Of Residual Waste Material As Agricultural Soil Amendments On Soil Greenhouse Gas Fluxes, Ashley Waggoner

Open Access Master's Theses

Anthropogenic causes of rising levels of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2, CH4, and N2O in the earth’s atmosphere are increasingly of concern due to their effects on climate change. Much of the earth’s carbon is retained in sinks created when atmospheric C is transformed into various forms of soil organic matter (SOM) and stored as stable, decay-resistant SOM for variable periods of time. When land is in its natural state, SOM is generally at a natural equilibrium of C inputs and outputs. Land use changes, particularly cultivation and conventional agricultural practices, have resulted …
