Time Series Changes Of Surficial Sediments On Eastern Ship Shoal, Louisiana Shelf, Adam Gartelman, Kehui Xu, Brian J. Roberts, David Samuel Johnson, Madison Liotta

Ship Shoal, a large transgressive sand body on the Louisiana continental shelf, is a critical sediment source for coastal restoration. This study evaluates spatial and temporal variability in sediment grain size, percents organic matter (%OM), and carbonate (%CO3) across the shoal crest (REF), Caminada Dredge Pit (CAM), and Terrebonne Dredge Pit (TER). Sediment samples were collected between 2020 and 2022 using box cores and analyzed for grain size, %OM, and %CO3, with temporal and spatial patterns assessed through statistical comparisons, correlation analyses, and random forest regression models. Due to high sedimentation rate up to ~1 m/year, mud-capped dredge pits (MCDP) are often considered natural laboratories for studying sedimentary processes, slope stability and the impacts of dredging activities on marine environments. Although many studies have been performed on the Louisiana shelf, there is a lack of high spatial resolution research covering the eastern, central and western Louisiana shelf to comprehensively investigate sediment infilling. In soft-sediment communities, benthic macroinfauna can recover quickly (sometimes < 1 year) from dredging. However, it’s unclear how recovery is influenced if dredging dramatically changes abiotic factors. We determined recovery of benthic macroinfauna from dredging on a sandy shoal (Ship Shoal, Louisiana, USA), six years after dredging. Because the dredged area infilled with mud instead of sand and changed local abiotic conditions, we hypothesized that the benthic community had not recovered. Our results support this hypothesis. Although the dredged community had, on average, 160% greater density and 170% greater macroinfaunal biomass than the reference community, these increases were driven by the opportunistic and seasonally variable dwarf clam, Mulinia lateralis. Community structure differed starkly between the regions. Haustoriid amphipods and amphioxus (Branchiostoma floridae) dominated the reference community. However, these taxa were largely absent from the dredged community, which was dominated by opportunistic species such as M. lateralis and the fringe-gilled mudworm Paraprionospio pinnata. Community differences were largely driven by bottom-water dissolved oxygen and sediment grain size. Our results suggest that the dredged areas are still in a transitional phase of recovery after six years – dominated by opportunistic, hypoxia-tolerant species. Our results suggest that abiotic factors such as grain size and hypoxia are important in structuring benthic communities and their recovery rates. Thus, to achieve faster recovery of the biological community, dredging should be conducted in a way that minimizes long-term impacts on abiotic conditions.

The abundant-center hypothesis (ACH) provides a conceptual model for predicting range-wide distributions of species abundance, suggesting that abundance peaks in the center of the geographic range and declines towards range edges. Empirical studies testing the ACH and its subsequent derivations predominantly occurred in terrestrial systems and reported mixed support. Moreover, none of these models consider the possibility of multiple geographic areas of elevated abundance (which we refer to as ‘abundant cores'). Naturally dispersal limited species may exhibit multiple abundant cores, requiring refinement of the ACH. A genetic mutation of MAGED2 protein results in Bartter syndrome, a disease resulting in loss of salt retention, causing premature birth and perinatal mortality. MAGED2 acts upon an important cell signaling protein, Gαs. This proposal investigates the novel interaction between MAGED2 and Gαs. Utilizing Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Macromolecular X-ray Diffraction, we will begin characterizing the structural underpinnings of MAGED2:Gαs, of which there is currently no structure. Additionally, we will characterize the guanine nucleotide exchange activity of MAGED2 upon Gαs. These studies will have implications in treating Bartter syndrome and provide preliminary data for future extramural funding.

Public wildlife law is clear: wild animals exist and are managed for the public writ large. This is a mistake. Wild animals are beings of moral concern; their lives can be good or bad, better or worse, and they should be treated accordingly. This article explores a novel legal instrument which can account for wild animals' unique interests and circumstances: private wildlife trusts, in which wild animals are the trust beneficiaries. Wildlife trusts pose distinctive management and implementation challenges. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a behaviorally derived treatment approach with broad application to psychological distress. A key outcome for an ACT-based intervention is psychological flexibility, derived from six core processes known as the hexaflex. (present moment, identification of values, committed action, defusion, acceptance, and self-as-context). ACT is a process-based approach with strong literature support, though it is unknown which, if any, of the six core processes are differentially protective against stress and burnout. As urbanization accelerates and climate change intensifies, cities increasingly turn to green infrastructure to manage stormwater and enhance resilience. Urban trees not only sequester carbon and reduce heat island effects but also partition rainfall into interception, throughfall, and stemflow. Stemflow (the water channeled down tree trunks) is often voluminous and nutrient-rich in urban settings, yet remains largely overlooked in conventional stormwater management. In this paper, we propose that repurposing stemflow can complement blue-green infrastructure by reducing runoff and providing supplemental irrigation for urban agriculture. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of automated activity monitoring (AAM) in detecting estrous expression and ovulatory status in cows during the voluntary waiting period (VWP). A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar using specific search terms. Inclusion criteria focused on studies that assessed estrous expression within the VWP using modern AAM systems alongside blood progesterone (P4) measurements. Four manuscripts involving 2,198 cows were included. Data extraction was performed by a single investigator and validated by a coauthor. This paper presents a tailored analog-to digital converter(ADC) architecture specifically designed to enhance the performance of diagnostic systems for troponin detection. Utilizing a 180 nm CMOS process technology, the developed 8-bit Successive Approximation Register(SAR) ADC integrates key components, including a preamplifier, comparator, and a digital-to-analog converter(DAC), to optimize signal processing and ensure accurate data conversion from analog to digital formats. Background: The Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R) is a caregiver interview that is widely used as part ofthe diagnostic assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Few large-scale studies have reported the sensitivityand specificity of the ADI-R algorithms, which are based on DSM-IV Autistic Disorder criteria. Kim and Lord (Journalof Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2012, 42, 82) developed revised DSM-5-based toddler algorithms, which areonly applicable to children under 4 years. In Nebraska, the Common Raven was likely widespread prior to 1900, being codistributed with the American Bison (Bison bison). Records in this time are spotty, but consistent. Thomas Say reported a nearly fledged brood—the only confirmed breeding record in this period—at Fort Calhoun in Washington County on May 12, 1820. A Common Raven was collected at Fort Randall, on the Missouri River just north of the modern Nebraska–South Dakota border, in the fall of 1857 during the Lieutenant Warren Expeditions.
