A Systematic Review Of The Treatment And Management Of Pre-Eclampsia And Eclampsia In Nigeria, Karen Kirk, Ishita Chattopadhyay
A Systematic Review Of The Treatment And Management Of Pre-Eclampsia And Eclampsia In Nigeria, Karen Kirk, Ishita Chattopadhyay
Reproductive Health
Throughout the development of a pregnancy, there are many opportunities when pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) can be prevented, detected, and managed; based on the literature, certain gaps exist along this continuum of care. To fully appreciate the enormity of the problem at the country level, the Population Council conducted a systematic review of published papers on PE/E in Nigeria from 2000–15 in order to understand the key challenges, gaps, and interventions related to the prevention and treatment of PE/E. In order to have the most impact, this report recommends a multi-level set of interventions that increase community awareness of symptoms …

Understanding Married Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection In Egypt: An Exploratory Study, Doaa Oraby, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab
Reproductive Health
This study examines the behavioral, sociocultural, economic, programmatic, and legal factors that aggravate Egyptian women’s vulnerabilities to HIV/AIDS. The study concludes that in low-prevalence settings like Egypt, targeted interventions are the most strategic and cost-effective: for example, HIV awareness-raising with a special focus on the preventive role of consistent, correct condom use, and creating a cadre of peers that could provide psychosocial support and HIV counseling to migrant workers. Furthermore, premarital and antenatal care programs should include HIV awareness-raising and provider-initiated counseling and testing after screening of women to identify those at risk for HIV infection. Concurrently, efforts should be …

Reproductive Health
Concerned about high levels of neonatal mortality, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district government in Pakistan expressed a need to adapt and test a new approach—commonly referred to as the “Made-In/Made-For” (MIMF) method—that uses community-based informants to estimate the number of maternal deaths. The current pilot study in Nowshera was commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and conducted by the Population Council to test the feasibility of using the method, and community-based informant networks that had been used to measure maternal mortality, for estimating neonatal deaths. This study clearly shows that, in addition to identifying maternal deaths, informant …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new N-carboxamide compound (3) was synthesized by the reaction of dibenzoylaceticacid-$N$-carboxyethyla\-mide (1) and 3,4-dichloroaniline (2). The $N$-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-oxo-3-phenyl-2-(phenylcarbonyl) propanamide (3) subsequently reacted with Cu salt to produce its Cu(II) complex compound (4). The compounds were characterized by analytical and spectral methods. In addition, X-ray diffraction was performed to characterize and obtain detailed information about the structure of 3. The fully optimized geometries of compounds 3 and 4 were calculated at different basis sets by using the Gaussian09 (G09) software to investigate their 3D geometries and electronic structures. Comparisons between the calculated and experimental data including molecular structures, fundamental vibrational modes, …

Grain Sorghum Leaf Reflectance And Nitrogen Status, Akwasi A. Abunyewa, Richard B. Ferguson, Charles S. Wortmann, Stephen C. Mason
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Nitrogen deficiency is a common but readily managed constraint to grain yield. A quick and nondestructive detection of crop N status using remote sensing could be a means to increased N use efficiency. Research was conducted in a greenhouse in 2006 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to establish the relationship of spectral reflectance with N status in leaves of grain sorghum, to develop indices for interpretation of the results and to predict chlorophyll content. Nitrogen stress decreased chlorophyll meter reading and leaf N content, but increased leaf and canopy reflectance. The SPAD values were significantly increased by both water and …

Educators introduce ideals in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and the overall purposes of education, often by introducing new phrases or assigning new meanings to familiar language. Attracted to those ideals, other educators begin using this language, sometimes simply because it has grown popular, hut without rejecting on it and without altering their educational practice, thus reducing the language and the ideals to slogans. This article offers both strategic and principal reasons for educators, and especially Christian educators, to use educational language carefully. One's colleagues and students notice when we fail to practice what we preach, landing us in an easily-visible irony. …
Insertion Sites Of Feline Leukemia Virus, Alexa M. Salsbury
Insertion Sites Of Feline Leukemia Virus, Alexa M. Salsbury
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a transmittable RNA retrovirus that inhibits feline immune systems and predisposes its host to infections and diseases. Much is unknown about FeLV, including the nature and location of its insertion sites. Identifying insertion sites of the provirus can provide information about mechanisms of tumorigenesis and identifY new protooncogenes. To search for insertion sites, gene-specific primers were designed and a genome walking method was optimized for our application. Using the optimized process, blood and tissue samples were examined for FeLV provirus. The cat from which we received samples showed neurological symptoms before death; therefore, we hypothesized …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Lysosomal cathepsins regulate an exquisite range of biological functions, and their deregulation is associated with inflammatory, metabolic, and degenerative diseases in humans. In this study, we identified a key cell-intrinsic role for cathepsin B as a negative feedback regulator of lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy. Mice and macrophages lacking cathepsin B activity had increased resistance to the cytosolic bacterial pathogen Francisella novicida. Genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition of cathepsin B down-regulated mechanistic target of rapamycin activity and prevented cleavage of the lysosomal calcium channel TRPML1. These events drove transcription of lysosomal and autophagy genes via transcription factor EB, which increased lysosomal …

Genome-wide association (GWA) has been used as a tool for dissecting the genetic architecture of quantitatively inherited traits. We demonstrate here that GWA can also be highly useful for detecting many major genes governing categorically defined phenotype variants that exist for qualitatively inherited traits in a germplasm collection. Genome-wide association mapping was applied to categorical phenotypic data available for 10 descriptive traits in a collection of ~13,000 soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] accessions that had been genotyped with a 50,000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip. A GWA on a panel of accessions of this magnitude can offer substantial statistical …

Auxin represents a key signal in plants, regulating almost every aspect of their growth and development. Major breakthroughs have been made dissecting the molecular basis of auxin transport, perception, and response. In contrast, how plants control the metabolism and homeostasis of the major form of auxin in plants, indole-3- acetic acid (IAA), remains unclear. In this paper, we initially describe the function of the Arabidopsis thaliana gene DIOXYGENASE FOR AUXIN OXIDATION 1 (AtDAO1). Transcriptional and translational reporter lines revealed that AtDAO1 encodes a highly root-expressed, cytoplasmically localized IAA oxidase. Stable isotope-labeled IAA feeding studies of loss and …

Acute Psychosis In Children: Do Not Miss Immune-Mediated Causes, Afnan S. Alhakeem, Mohamed S. Mekki, Saad M. Alshahwan, Brahim M. Tabarki
Neurosciences
New-onset psychosis in children represents a complex presenting symptom. Psychosis can be attributable to a combination of factors and etiologies, and all possible causes must be systematically examined. There is growing evidence that a proportion of psychosis/psychiatric manifestations in children may be immune-mediated, and physicians should consider this etiology in each presentation of first-episode psychosis. Immune-mediated encephalopathies/encephalitis are increasingly being recognized in children with antibodies to N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 or other central nervous system antigens such as Contactin-associated protein-like 2, glutamic acid decarboxylase, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid or Gamma-aminobutyric acid B. In this study, we describe 3 cases of immune-mediated …

Essentials Of Research Methods In Neurosurgery And Allied Sciences For Research, Appraisal And Application Of Scientific Information To Patient Care (Part I), Ignatius N. Esene, Amr M. El-Shehaby, Saleh S. Baeesa
Neurosciences
Every neurosurgeon ought to be acquainted with the basics of research methods to enhance the comprehension of the research process and critical appraisal procedures of a scientific write-up. This in turn will ensure the appropriate application of scientific knowledge to patient care. Recent publications reveal that a significant proportion of articles published in neurosurgery are mislabeled with dire consequences on the sorting and indexing of evidence. Furthermore, many clinicians report that they feel unqualified to read the medical literature critically hence, it is for this reason that we conducted this review. Herein, we present a simple algorithm to facilitate the …

Walk Like Me, Talk Like Me: The Connection Between Mirror Neurons And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jillian M. Saffin, Hassaan Tohid
Neurosciences
Understanding social cognition has become a hallmark in deciphering autism spectrum disorder. Neurobiological theories are taking precedence in causation studies as researchers look to abnormalities in brain development as the cause of deficits in social behavior, cognitive processes, and language. Following their discovery in the 1990s, mirror neurons have become a dominant theory for that the mirror neuron system may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of various symptoms of autism. Over the decades, the theory has evolved from the suggestion of a broken mirror neuron system to impairments in mirror neuron circuitry. The mirror neuron system has not …

Evidence-Based Neurosurgery: Basic Concepts For The Appraisal And Application Of Scientific Information To Patient Care (Part Ii), Ignatius N. Esene, Saleh S. Baeesa, Ahmed Ammar
Neurosciences
Medical evidence is obtainable from approaches, which might be descriptive, analytic and integrative and ranked into levels of evidence, graded according to quality and summarized into strengths of recommendation. Sources of evidence range from expert opinions through well-randomized control trials to meta-analyses. The conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions related to the care of individual patients defines the concept of evidence-based neurosurgery (EBN). We reviewed reference books of clinical epidemiology, evidence-based practice and other previously related articles addressing principles of evidence-based practice in neurosurgery. Based on existing theories and models and our cumulative years …
Mechanisms And Regulation Of Neurotrophin Synthesis And Secretion, Mohammad A. Al-Qudah, Ahmed Al-Dwairi
Mechanisms And Regulation Of Neurotrophin Synthesis And Secretion, Mohammad A. Al-Qudah, Ahmed Al-Dwairi
Neurosciences
Neurotrophins are secreted proteins that are synthesized as pre-pro-neurotrophins on the rough endoplasmic reticulum, which are subsequently processed and then secreted as mature proteins. During synthesis, neurotrophins are sorted in the trans-Golgi apparatus into 2 pathways of secretion; the constitutive and the regulated pathways. Neurotrophins in the constitutive pathway are secreted cautiously without any trigger, while in the regulated pathway of secretion an external stimulus elevates the calcium concentration intracellularly leading to neurotrophin release. The regulation of sorting and secretion of neurotrophins is critical for several processes in the body, such as synaptic plasticity, neurodegenerative disorders, demyelination disease, and inflammation. …

For agricultural purposes, drought related stresses negatively affect the Rhizobiaceae in at least three ways. Firstly, rhizobial populations are affected by desertification of agricultural soils. Secondly, the quality of dry-base inocula, also called formula, is negatively affected by a drying step, and thirdly, rhizosphere bacteria protect crop-plants against drought. Although survival of cultivatable bacteria has been studied intensively in dry-base seed inocula and in-vitro, thus far research has only marginally addressed the bacterial cell, its cellular structures and physiology. Many questions remain regarding the sensing of and physiological response of rhizobia to desiccation. This review will focus on the three …

Embracing The Abject: Explored Through Kristeva’S Theory Of The Maternal And The Abject In The Creative Work “Listening”, Michelle Symes
Theses : Honours
Kristeva and Jung are both concerned with marginalization. For Jung, it is marginalization of the hidden unconscious (Hauke, 2000). For Kristeva, it is marginalization of the hidden physical realm of women and the “feminine” (Hauke, 2000, p127). Using Kristeva as my primary theorist, I will compare her subject-inprocess theory of the maternal and abject to Jung’s static unitary theory of individuation and the Shadow. Because of the parameters of this project, I have not been able to focus on the nature of Jung’s central feminine principle. By comparing Kristeva to Jung, women’s shame, as represented by patriarchy’s rejection of the …
