Adverse Childhood Experiences And Their Relation To Parenting Stress And Parenting Practices, Brittany Lange Jan 2016

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Their Relation To Parenting Stress And Parenting Practices, Brittany Lange

Public Health Theses

Introduction: Trauma represents a significant public health issue that has been associated with a number of adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Additionally, parenting practices have been found to be affected by trauma. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), one conceptualization of trauma, are also associated with adverse outcomes. However, limited research has been done on ACEs and their association to parenting stress and practices. As such, this study aims to understand this relationship. Methods: Surveys (n=1985) were administered to a population of low-income, parenting women to determine community needs and eligibility for a mental health intervention. At the baseline visit, measures …

In His Image: A Content Analysis Of Evangelical Youth Books For Their Representation Of Gender Roles And Ideals, Taryn Renee Vis Jan 2016

In His Image: A Content Analysis Of Evangelical Youth Books For Their Representation Of Gender Roles And Ideals, Taryn Renee Vis

Honors Projects

This content analysis discusses the results of the analysis of twelve major Evangelical books for young adults and their representation of gender roles and gender ideals. The background of the Evangelical church’s handling of gender, particularly in relation to media beginning in the 1970s is established and discussed at length in order to situate this analysis amongst previous discussion of Evangelical gender roles. This analysis found that each of the books discussed four main themes of gender roles and relations: biological essentialism, complementarianism, counter-cultural branding of gender, and sexual purity (especially for young women).

© 2016, American Society for Microbiology. Lake Fryxell is a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, with a sharp oxycline in a water column that is density stabilized by a gradient in salt concentration. Dissolved oxygen falls from 20 mg liter-1 to undetectable over one vertical meter from 8.9-to 9.9-m depth. We provide the first description of the benthic mat community that falls within this oxygen gradient on the sloping floor of the lake, using a combination of micro- and macroscopic morphological descriptions, pigment analysis, and 16S rRNA gene bacterial community analysis. Our work focused on three …

Moving Towards The Goals Of Fp2020 — Classifying Contraceptives, Mario Philip R. Festin, James Kiarie, Julie Solo, Jeffrey Spieler, Shawn Malarcher, Paul F.A. Van Look, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

With the renewed focus on family planning, a clear and transparent understanding is needed for the consistent classification of contraceptives, especially in the commonly used modern/traditional system. The World Health Organization Department of Reproductive Health and Research and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) therefore convened a technical consultation in January 2015 to address issues related to classifying contraceptives. The consultation defined modern contraceptive methods as having a sound basis in reproductive biology, a precise protocol for correct use and evidence of efficacy under various conditions based on appropriately designed studies. Methods in country programs like Fertility Awareness …

Methods: Children in the two programs were assessed before and after each program with the MABC-2, DCD-Q, BOT-2, Beery-VMI-6, and the TGMD-2 assessments. The emphasis of the programs was on group activities …

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Candidate Probiotics For Disease Prevention In Shellfish Hatcheries, Saebom Sohn Jan 2016

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Candidate Probiotics For Disease Prevention In Shellfish Hatcheries, Saebom Sohn

Open Access Dissertations

In the United States of America, oyster production is an important component of the seafood economy in many communities in coastal states. The severe impact of disease outbreaks and mass mortality of oyster larvae in hatcheries impacts production, since the oyster industry is largely dependent on hatchery and nursery production. The use of probiotics has been proposed as a potential preventative measure to limit the impact of bacterial diseases in shellfish hatcheries. In previous laboratory studies, the probiotic bacteria Phaeobacter inhibens S4 and Bacillus pumillus RI06-95 improved the survival of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae against the pathogens …

Design And Development Of Ph Sensitive Nanomedicine For Targeted Drug Delivery, Mohan C. Pereira Jan 2016

Design And Development Of Ph Sensitive Nanomedicine For Targeted Drug Delivery, Mohan C. Pereira

Open Access Dissertations

Targeted drug delivery has been the major topic in drug formulation and delivery. As nanomedicine emerges to create nano-scale therapeutics and diagnostics, it is still essential to embed targeting capability to these novel systems to make them useful. Design of robust nanomedicine with universal targeting capabilities could provide effective solutions to the ever increasing demand of curing and preventing major diseases.

Diseases like carcinoma & ischemia are accompanied with hypoxia and acidosis. Because of the elevated glycolysis and acidosis in the diseased cells, they show a lower pH in the surface of the cells which promotes the appearance of aggressive …

The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba Jan 2016

The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba

Open Access Dissertations

Indonesia is well known for abundant aquatic resources, both marine and freshwater, including fishes, zooplankton and phytoplanktonic microalgae. However, relatively little information is available about microalgal resources despite their potential to be used as live feed in the hatchery phase of aquaculture of a number of marine species. The use of local microalgae is desirable in local hatcheries because they tend to grow better with high yield under local conditions, thus reducing the risk of culture crash and production cost while preventing disease vectors that may introduced by foreign microalgae strains. In this dissertation, the potential of Indonesian microalgae to …

Cytotoxic And Mutagenic Potential Of Solutions Exposed To Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Daniela Boehm, Caitlin Heslin, P.J. Cullen, Paula Bourke Jan 2016

Cytotoxic And Mutagenic Potential Of Solutions Exposed To Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Daniela Boehm, Caitlin Heslin, P.J. Cullen, Paula Bourke

Articles

The exposure of aqueous solutions to atmospheric plasmas results in the generation of relatively long-lived secondary products such as hydrogen peroxide which are biologically active and have demonstrated anti-microbial and cytotoxic activity. The use of plasma-activated solutions in applications such as microbial decontamination or anti-cancer treatments requires not only adequate performance on target cells but also a safe operating window regarding the impact on surrounding tissues. Furthermore the generation of plasma-activated fluids needs to be considered as a by-stander effect of subjecting tissue to plasma discharges. Cytotoxicity and mutagenicity assays using mammalian cell lines were used to elucidate the effects …

Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran Jan 2016

Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Many processes in nature and industry can be described by partial differential equations. PDEs employ quantities such as density, temperature, velocity, etc. and their partial derivatives to model these phenomena. However, in the case of distributed parameter systems, it is not always possible to have access to the states of the systems due to technical difficulties such as lack of sensors. Therefore, there is the need for state observers to estimate the states of the system only having the output of the system available. In this research, the theory of sliding mode and variable structure systems are employed in order …

A Biomimetic, Energy-Harvesting, Obstacle-Avoiding, Path-Planning Algorithm For Uavs, Snorri Gudmundsson Jan 2016

A Biomimetic, Energy-Harvesting, Obstacle-Avoiding, Path-Planning Algorithm For Uavs, Snorri Gudmundsson

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This dissertation presents two new approaches to energy harvesting for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). One method is based on the Potential Flow Method (PFM); the other method seeds a wind-field map based on updraft peak analysis and then applies a variant of the Bellman-Ford algorithm to find the minimum-cost path. Both methods are enhanced by taking into account the performance characteristics of the aircraft using advanced performance theory. The combined approach yields five possible trajectories from which the one with the minimum energy cost is selected. The dissertation concludes by using the developed theory and modeling tools to simulate the …

The role of NK cells in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and liver inflammation in obesity is not fully understood. This study investigated the frequency, cytokine expression, chemokine receptor, and cytotoxicity receptor profile of NK cells in the blood, omentum, and liver of patients with the obesity-associated cancer, oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC). The effect of chronically inflamed tissue microenvironments on NK cell viability and function was also examined. We identified significantly lower NK cell frequencies in the liver of OAC patients compared with healthy controls and within the omentum and liver of OAC patients compared with blood, whereas IL-10-producing populations were significantly …

Assessing The Impact Of Industrial Oil Development, Human Population Growth, And Post-Conflict Regrowth In An African Biodiversity Hotspot, Nicholas Sean Dowhaniuk Jan 2016

Assessing The Impact Of Industrial Oil Development, Human Population Growth, And Post-Conflict Regrowth In An African Biodiversity Hotspot, Nicholas Sean Dowhaniuk

Master's Theses and Capstones

Understanding the drivers of human population growth and landscape fragmentation surrounding protected areas is vital to the success of conservation initiatives worldwide. However, the drivers of land cover change and population growth can be complex. While natural population growth is a primary cause of population growth in Africa, migration due to major anthropogenic events is increasingly common in Sub-Saharan Africa. Unprecedented mineral and oil extraction is currently occurring in Africa, often in areas of high conservation importance. Additionally, conflict often plays a large role in human migration through refugee resettlement, and many people in the region are now moving in …

Effects Of Mowing And Soil Disturbance On The No-Till Establishment And Productivity Of A Diverse Forage Crop Cocktail In Hayfields, Myers M. Shaiyen Jan 2016

Effects Of Mowing And Soil Disturbance On The No-Till Establishment And Productivity Of A Diverse Forage Crop Cocktail In Hayfields, Myers M. Shaiyen

Master's Theses and Capstones

This project examined approaches to establishing a functionally diverse forage crop “cocktail”, a mixture of 15 annual and perennial forage crop species with contrasting functional traits, within a hayfield for the purpose of increasing hayfield forage plant diversity and productivity. The forage crop cocktail was intended to enhance the diversity of the resident hayfield, as well as contribute to enhancements in overall hayfield productivity via biological interactions among the cocktail and resident hayfield species, rather than through external chemical inputs. We examined several strategies for both managing the resident hayfield plant community prior to sowing the cocktail and the timing …

Dominance And Experience: Aggression And The Evolutionary Origins Of Social Behavior, Jacob Withee Jan 2016

Dominance And Experience: Aggression And The Evolutionary Origins Of Social Behavior, Jacob Withee

Master's Theses and Capstones

Sociality as a life history strategy has many overt benefits, but its origin from solitary living is not fully understood. The cooperation necessary for formation of even basic social groups can present natural selection paradoxes that many models are unable to reconcile. Conversely, aggression is a key component to the formation of dominance hierarchies, a very basic form of social group. These hierarchies can give way to reproductive hierarchies, which are in turn the basis for some of the most complex forms of social organization. The focus of this thesis is to use aggression in an incipiently social bee species …

Fecal Indicator Bacteria Removal By River Networks, Tao Huang Jan 2016

Fecal Indicator Bacteria Removal By River Networks, Tao Huang

Master's Theses and Capstones

Fecal bacteria have a significant impact on downstream water quality. Removal of fecal bacteria in river systems potentially attenuates downstream impairments and would represent an important ecosystem service. However, few studies aimed to quantify in-stream removal of fecal bacteria. The goal of this study is to understand the ecosystem service of fecal bacteria removal at the river network scale in both water column and hyporheic zone across hydrologic conditions. I developed a module for routing fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) through river networks in the Framework for Aquatic Modeling of the Earth System (FrAMES) model to understand the fate and transport …

Promoting Resilience In Latino/A Youth: An Examination Of Resilience Research And Its Implications For The Developmental Outcomes Of U.S.-Born Latino/A Youth, Darlene R. Moreno

Theses and Dissertations

Resilience research has done much to shift attention away from a deficit perspective in mental health theory and practice to a more strength-based approach. Despite often being cited as one of the populations most at risk for negative developmental outcomes, some Latino/a youth demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. To further expand knowledge and understanding of resilience and protective processes among U.S.-born Latino/a youth, the current study sought to integrate existing findings related to protective factors identified in research associated with parenting as well as other areas of development with those being generated in the field of resilience with …

The Major Supporting Mechanisms For Successful Single Working Mothers, Toia Thompson Mengesha Jan 2016

The Major Supporting Mechanisms For Successful Single Working Mothers, Toia Thompson Mengesha

Theses and Dissertations

Single mothers are commonly characterized as low-income welfare recipients. In 2010, close to 30% of single mother households were below the poverty line (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010a) conversely leaving 70% of single mothers above the poverty line. Being a married working mother is challenging and comes with the need of several supports. With the growing divorce rate and the introduction of women choosing to become single mothers, the numbers of single working mothers are growing rapidly. In order to be a successful single mother certain factors need to be accounted for. This study focused on single mothers who are in …
