Intervention is needed. Essential oils are non-invasive and simple to use and were chosen for this study based on their potential ability to reduce stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of aromatherapy as a stress reduction tool for college students. This study took place in Aber Hall and involved residents of floors 6 and 7, as assigned by the residence life director. …

Phenotypic And Genetic Analyses Of Adaptation To Geothermal Soils In Yellow Monkeyflowers Of Yellowstone National Park, Peter Breigenzer Jan 2016

Phenotypic And Genetic Analyses Of Adaptation To Geothermal Soils In Yellow Monkeyflowers Of Yellowstone National Park, Peter Breigenzer

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Microgeographic adaptation, which occurs on a spatial scale smaller than the dispersal distance of the evolving organisms, provides a fertile context for understanding the genetic processes that shape natural variation and contribute to biological diversity. In plants, mosaics of distinct soil conditions can select for microgeographic divergence in the face of gene flow, leading to major life history transitions and novel trait evolution. Mimulus (monkeyflowers) is an emerging model genus for ecological genomics, due to tremendous diversity, experimental tractability, and a wealth of genomic resources. In Yellowstone National Park, Mimulus guttatus occurs in both geothermal soils and nearby nonthermal bogs …

Police Body Cameras In Large Police Departments, Barak Ariel Jan 2016

Police Body Cameras In Large Police Departments, Barak Ariel

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Body Worn Cameras are spreading worldwide, under the assumption that police performance, conduct, accountability, and legitimacy, in the eyes of the public, are enhanced as a result of using these devices. In addition, suspects’ demeanor during police–public engagements is hypothesized to change as a result of the video-recording of the encounter. For both parties—officers and suspects—the theoretical mechanism that underpins these behavioral changes is deterrence theory, self-awareness theory, or both. Yet evidence on the efficacy of Body Worn Cameras remains largely anecdotal, with only one rigorous study, from a small force in Rialto, California, validating the hypotheses. How Body Worn …

Rapid Evidence Maps As Decision Tools For Evidence-Based Policy, Mark Engelbert Jan 2016

Rapid Evidence Maps As Decision Tools For Evidence-Based Policy, Mark Engelbert

Capstone Collection

The movement to make policy more evidence-based is gaining increasing influence in the field of international development. I argue that, properly understood and executed, evidence-based policy has the promise to make development efforts more effective. However, if policy decisions are to be evidence-based, there must be tools available to policymakers that provide evidence in usable formats. The research community has developed a variety of such tools, but there are some decision-making contexts for which none of the currently-available tools are ideally suited. This paper describes a new type of evidence tool, the rapid evidence map (REM), that provides users with …

Background

Brucellosis and Q fever may impart high morbidity in humans and economic losses among livestock. Yet, a systematic investigation has not been performed in Thailand, where a significant proportion of the rural population may be vulnerable to these zoonotic diseases.

Objectives

We surveyed the seroprevalence of brucellosis and Q fever in livestock from Thai communities at the border with Cambodia, evaluated risk factors for seropositivity, and performed a risk assessment for potential transmission to farmers.

Methods

We selected herds of beef and dairy cattle and small ruminants (sheep and goats) for Sa Kaeo province in 2015 using a two-stage …

Associations Of Depression With End-Of-Life Cancer Care Intensity, Kathy Cao Doan Jan 2016

Associations Of Depression With End-Of-Life Cancer Care Intensity, Kathy Cao Doan

Public Health Theses

Background: Depression has adverse effects on health outcomes and the quality of end-of-life care among cancer patients. However, overly aggressive EOL care can result in high costs and may not be consistent with patient preferences or linked to better health. As such, there is rising interest in identifying the associations between depression and care quality for cancer patients. This study investigates whether depression is associated with EOL care intensity among elderly individuals with cancer.

Methods: Utilizing the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare linked database, we identified decedents aged 66 years or older either with pre-cancer depression, post-cancer depression, or no …

Cognition And Problem Solving Using Detour Reaching And Novel Object Tasks In The Budgerigar, Mollie E. Kemp Jan 2016

Cognition And Problem Solving Using Detour Reaching And Novel Object Tasks In The Budgerigar, Mollie E. Kemp

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

As animal cognition is a complex and multifaceted issue, our understanding of the topic is still incomplete. Particularly, our understanding of what factors may drive the development of intricate and costly behaviors relating to cognition, like bird call or song, are not well understood. One possible explanation is the cognitive capacity hypothesis which states that song complexity is a signal of cognitive abilities and thus an indication of a mate’s ability to problem solve and thus effectively provide for offspring and mates. However, previous research of this hypothesis has yielded mixed results and has 1) focused solely on male song …

Management Of Acute Postoperative Hypertension For Reducing Cardiovascular Complications In Cancer Patients: When And How Aggressively?, Ning Lou, Daofeng Wang, Zhi Wang, Wenfeng Ye, Xiao Liu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We sought to determine what factors cardiovascular complications (CVCs) correlate with in cancer patients with acute postoperative hypertension (APH) and to define when and how aggressively to treat this disorder in the present study. Materials and methods: A retrospective observational study of cancer patients with postoperative hypertension at a single intensive care unit between July 2007 and June 2013 was conducted. The outcome of interest was the incidence of a CVC. Results: There were 1162 patients enrolled, of which 92 (7.9%) experienced one or more CVCs. Preexisting hypertension (OR 38.3, 95% CI 3.2-457.4, P = 0.004) and choice of …

Simulation Of Cryolipolysis As A Novel Method For Noninvasive Fat Layer Reduction, Abbas Majdabadi, Mohammad Abazari

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Regarding previous problems in conventional liposuction methods, the need for development of new fat removal operations was appreciated. In this study we are going to simulate one of the novel methods, cryolipolysis, aimed to tackle those drawbacks. Materials and methods: We think that simulation of clinical procedures contributes considerably in efficacious performance of the operations. To do this we have attempted to simulate temperature distribution in a sample fat of the human body. Using Abaqus software we have presented the graphical display of temperature-time variations within the medium. Results: Findings of our simulation indicate that tissue temperature decreases after …
