Assessments of children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) are typically limited to a physical exam and observations from a clinician during a hospital visit. Often quantitative information such as bone mineral density and outcome questionnaires is obtained, but with the increasing prevalence of motion analysis and other performance type laboratories, there are many other tools available, which could be beneficial to this patient population. These laboratories can provide date supplementary to morphologic and radiographic data that is helpful in tracking changes in the patient’s functional abilities, recover from fracture, and treatment outcomes. This chapter will cover some useful evaluation methods for …

Lessons Learned From A 10-Year Collaboration Between Engineering And Industrial Design Students In Capstone Design Projects, Jay R. Goldberg, Pascal Malassigné
Lessons Learned From A 10-Year Collaboration Between Engineering And Industrial Design Students In Capstone Design Projects, Jay R. Goldberg, Pascal Malassigné
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Engineers and industrial designers have different approaches to problem solving. Both place heavy emphasis on identification of customer needs, manufacturing methods, and prototyping. Industrial designers focus on aesthetics, ergonomics, ease of use, and the user’s experience. They tend to be more visual and more concerned with the interaction between users and products. Engineers focus on functionality, performance requirements, analytical modeling, and design verification and validation. They tend to be more analytical and more concerned with the design of internal components and product performance. Engineers and industrial designers often work together on project teams in industry. Collaboration between the two groups …
Cortex Necessary For Pain — But Not In Sense That Matters, Adam J. Shriver
Cortex Necessary For Pain — But Not In Sense That Matters, Adam J. Shriver
Animal Sentience
Certain cortical regions are necessary for pain in humans in the sense that, at particular times, they play a direct role in pain. However, it is not true that they are necessary in the more important sense that pain is never possible in humans without them. There are additional details from human lesion studies concerning functional plasticity that undermine Key’s (2016) interpretation. Moreover, no one has yet identified any specific behaviors that mammalian cortical pain regions make possible that are absent in fish.
Fish And Pain: The Politics Of Doubt, Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel
Fish And Pain: The Politics Of Doubt, Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel
Animal Sentience
The commentaries on Key’s (2016) target article make it clear that there is a great deal of doubt about Key’s thesis that fish do not feel pain. The political question therefore is about how we should respond to doubt. If the thesis of Key and others (that fish do not feel pain) is wrong, then the negative impact for fish in terms of suffering caused by human utilisation would be extreme. In the face of this doubt, the very least we can do is to adopt basic welfare precautions to mitigate the potential impact if fish do suffer, with attention …
Devaluation As A Strategy To Address Behaviourally Whether Fish Feel, Robert Ian Bowers
Devaluation As A Strategy To Address Behaviourally Whether Fish Feel, Robert Ian Bowers
Animal Sentience
Failures of behavioural studies to address the question of whether fish feel pain have left scientists arguing on the basis of other criteria, including anatomy. I draw an analogy with a debate concerning the breadth of stimulus-response learning among nonhuman animals and propose an experiment that harks back to one solution to that debate: the devaluation paradigm. By changing the value of a noxious stimulus after training, one can differentiate a directly evoked response from a response to an intermediate representation, the pain.
Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal
Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Dynamic task graph schedulers automatically balance work across processor cores by scheduling tasks among available threads while preserving dependences. In this paper, we design NabbitC, a provably efficient dynamic task graph scheduler that accounts for data locality on NUMA systems. NabbitC allows users to assign a color to each task representing the location (e.g., a processor core) that has the most efficient access to data needed during that node’s execution. NabbitC then automatically adjusts the scheduling so as to preferentially execute each node at the location that matches its color—leading to better locality because the node is likely to make …
Is Sentience Only A Nonessential Component Of Animal Welfare?, Ian J.H. Duncan
Is Sentience Only A Nonessential Component Of Animal Welfare?, Ian J.H. Duncan
Animal Sentience
According to Broom (2014), animal welfare is a concept that can be applied to all animals, including single-celled organisms that are obviously not sentient. Such a stance makes it difficult to draw a connection between welfare and sentience, and that is the book’s downfall. Some excellent points are made about sentience and there are very good discussions on animal welfare. However, unless sentience is considered the essential component of welfare, any attempt to link the two phenomena will be unsuccessful — and that, indeed, is the case with this book.
Sentience And Animal Welfare: New Thoughts And Controversies, Donald M. Broom
Sentience And Animal Welfare: New Thoughts And Controversies, Donald M. Broom
Animal Sentience
Sentience involves having some degree of awareness but awareness of self is not as complex as some people believe. Fully functioning vertebrate animals, and some invertebrates, are sentient but neither humans nor non-humans are sentient early in development or if brain-damaged. Feelings are valuable adaptive mechanisms and an important part of welfare but are not all of welfare so the term welfare refers to all animals, not just to sentient animals. We have much to learn about what non-human animals want from us, the functioning of the more complex aspects of their brains and of our brains and how we …

Spiritual Nurture In Developing The Faith Of Christian High School Students: A Phenomenological Study, Martha Boyd-Mitchell
Spiritual Nurture In Developing The Faith Of Christian High School Students: A Phenomenological Study, Martha Boyd-Mitchell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many Christian schools provide solid academic environments for adolescents. The programming promises to deliver an education to nurture the human soul. This qualitative, transcendental, phenomenological study was for the purpose of discovering how spiritual nurture in Christian high schools aided and encouraged faith development. Christian high school is the lived experience of adolescents going to school with spiritual nurture at the heart of their programming. The participants were 15 adolescents who attended a Christian high school that implemented spiritual nurture by use of prayer, worship, biblically-integrated curriculum, Bible study, teacher-student relationships, holistic correction, and peer relationships. The epoche was the …
Transient Cfd Simulations Of Pumping And Mixing Using Electromagnetic, Fangping Yuan
Transient Cfd Simulations Of Pumping And Mixing Using Electromagnetic, Fangping Yuan
Doctoral Dissertations
"In this dissertation, two dimensional and three dimensional, transient CFD simulations are conducted to investigate the active pumping and mixing in microfluidics driven by Electromagnetic/Lorentz force. Shallow disk/ring cylindrical microfluidic cell and shallow cuboid microfluidic cell with electrodes deposited on the bottom surface are modelled for mixing and pumping purposes respectively. By applying voltage across specific pair of electrodes, an ionic current is established in the weak conductive liquid present in the cell. The current interacts with an externally applied magnetic field generating a Lorentz force that causes fluid motion in the cell. Velocity vectors, electric potential distributions and ionic …
Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Technology Development For Metallic Nanoparticle Characterization In Complex Matrices, Yongbo Dan
Doctoral Dissertations
"As the rapid growing of nanotechnology, the release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment is inevitable. After entering the real environment, ENPs tend to react with different components of the ecosystem (e.g. water, soil, air, plants) and make their characterization difficult. Analyzing ENPs in these complex matrices still remains as a grand challenge. ENPs characterization is normally the first step of risk assessment. Current analytical techniques have shown some limitations in revealing the unique characteristics of ENPs in complex matrices and reliable analytical techniques are in urgent need. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is an emerging …
The Reflected-Shifted-Truncated-Gamma Distribution For Negatively Skewed Survival Data With Application To Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome, Sophia D. Waymyers
The Reflected-Shifted-Truncated-Gamma Distribution For Negatively Skewed Survival Data With Application To Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome, Sophia D. Waymyers
Theses and Dissertations
Negatively skewed survival data arise occasionally in public health fields and in statistical research. Standard distributions such as the exponential, generalized F, generalized gamma, Gompertz, log-logistic, lognormal, Rayleigh, and Weibull distributions are not always well suited to this data. The primary goal of this dissertation is to find a viable alternative for modeling negatively skewed survival data such as the time to first remission for pediatric patients with frequently relapsing or steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome.
We begin with a brief introduction of survival analysis and the nature of pediatric nephrotic syndrome. A meta-analysis on atopy and pediatric nephrotic syndrome using …
From Model Systems To Real Catalysts: Bridging The Pressure And Materials Gaps, Audrey S. Duke
From Model Systems To Real Catalysts: Bridging The Pressure And Materials Gaps, Audrey S. Duke
Theses and Dissertations
For decades a fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysts has been pursued for rational catalyst design using model systems under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions; however, there exist stark differences between the simplified models investigated under UHV and the industrial catalysts used at high pressures. To bridge these gaps, it becomes essential to utilize progressively more complex materials and to correlate their surface structure and activity using incrementally higher pressure techniques. In this work, both model Pt-Re catalysts and powdered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were studied using a suite of traditional UHV surface science techniques in addition to ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy …
Properties And Applications Of Self-Assembled Benzophenone Bis-Urea Macrocycles, Arthur Ariston Korous
Properties And Applications Of Self-Assembled Benzophenone Bis-Urea Macrocycles, Arthur Ariston Korous
Theses and Dissertations
Supramolecular chemistry is a vast multidisciplinary field with great potential and application. It is driven by one simple concept, the self-assembly of small building blocks into larger complex architectures without application of external force. This thesis highlights previous applications of supramolecular chemistry in addition to new potential properties and applications. Recently, the Shimizu group reported a self-assembled benzophenone bis-urea macrocycle (host 1) that facilitated the selective oxidation of an encapsulated alkene when UV-irradiated in an oxygen atmosphere to afford products that are typically observed in radical mediated reactions.1 Surprisingly, the host displayed a stable room temperature radical upon UV irradiation. …
Investigating Structure-Activity Relationships Of Sl11 To Develop A Better Prostate Cancer Diagnostic, Rong Huang
Investigating Structure-Activity Relationships Of Sl11 To Develop A Better Prostate Cancer Diagnostic, Rong Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is now the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. Since many of the diagnostics either have high false results or risky, it’s important to have better diagnostics and earlier diagnosis of prostate cancer. Aberrant glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer. When cancer occurs, aberrant glycosylation occurs, therefore, glycosylation patterns may provide information about different cancer types and metastatic potential. In order to study and use these glycosylation patterns, the boronic acid functionalized synthetic lectins that can interact with glycans have been developed. The work described here focuses on 1) the structure activities of synthetic lectins …
Numerical Studies Of Arterial Tissue Failure, Xiaochang Leng
Numerical Studies Of Arterial Tissue Failure, Xiaochang Leng
Theses and Dissertations
Arterial tissue failure leads to a number of potentially life-threatening clinical conditions, such as atherosclerotic plaque rupture and aortic dissection which develop unpredictably and rapidly in vivo. Thus, a full understanding of the two conditions will provide a solid basis for medical advances in the intervention and prevention of the occurrence of this life-threatening event. The present work aims to develop a cohesive zone model (CZM) approach for analysis and simulation of arterial tissue failure, such as plaque and fibrous cap delamination and tearing, and to validate simulation predictions with experimental results.
To characterize the hysteresis phenomenon of diseased aortic …
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the language practices of members of the Andrus Center, a recreational senior center located in the southeastern United States. It specifically examines how “young-old” members, or those who had relatively recently made the transition to older identity, invoked and contested widely circulating ideologies of aging in the course of constructing their local age identities. Rather than treating age as an objective, individual characteristic, as commonly presumed in sociolinguistics, this study highlights the ways in which age identities were relationally and emergently coconstructed. Through analyses of interactional and ethnographic data collected over 18 months, I argue that mainstream …
The Association Between Physical Activity And Serum Immunoglobulin G (Igg) Antibodies Against Periodontal Bacteria, A. Paige Anderson
The Association Between Physical Activity And Serum Immunoglobulin G (Igg) Antibodies Against Periodontal Bacteria, A. Paige Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to add more research and evidence to the mechanisms surrounding periodontal disease, periodontal microorganisms, and physical activity. The main objective of this study is to evaluate and explore the association between physical activity and serum IgG antibodies, which are grouped into four distinct clusters, formed from species specific 19 periodontal antibody titers. This cross sectional study divided physical activity into three categories: adequately physically active, inadequately physically active, and inactive based on MET scores. Certain models were adjusted for confounders including age, sex, race/ethnicity, income-to-poverty ratio, years of formal education, smoking, alcohol intake, BMI, …
Cdk8 And Cdk19 As Novel Regulators Of Bmp4 Induced Emt In Cancer, Anne Elizabeth Serrao
Cdk8 And Cdk19 As Novel Regulators Of Bmp4 Induced Emt In Cancer, Anne Elizabeth Serrao
Theses and Dissertations
Bone morphogenetic protein 2/4 (BMP2/4), members of the transforming growth factor β (Tgf-β) superfamily, play a dichotomous role in the progression of cancers through cell growth suppression and the enhancement of tumorigenesis in a variety of cancers. Cyclin dependent kinase 8 (CDK8), a protein kinase that regulates gene transcription, is involved in a variety of cancers including breast and pancreatic cancers as well as in mediating BMP2 signaling via its canonical Smad1 pathway. Our studies show that BMP4 induced EMT signals primarily though Smad1 and that Yap1, a transcriptional co-activator, is necessary for BMP4 induced EMT. Using a highly specific …
Automated Image Analysis And Spatial Computational Modeling Of Nf-Kb In Cerebrovascular Endothelial Cells, Kasey Catalfomo
Automated Image Analysis And Spatial Computational Modeling Of Nf-Kb In Cerebrovascular Endothelial Cells, Kasey Catalfomo
Theses and Dissertations
Cerebrovascular endothelial cells play a key part in the inflammatory response of the blood-brain barrier in pathological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, the NF-κB signaling pathway plays a central role. Better understanding of the factors in inflammatory disease progression can lead to more effective treatments for such devastating illnesses like Alzheimer’s, asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes and many more inflammatory diseases. The proposed approach analyzes spatial NF-κB distribution contained in multispectral stacked micrograph images of cerebrovascular endothelial cells indexed based on dose of the activating protein and the length of activation. Image analysis code identifies the location of nuclear boundaries …
Mass Spectrometry-Based Protein Profiling And Investigations Of Tgf-Ss1-Induced Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Signatures In Namru Murine Mammary Gland Epithelial Cells, Matsepo Ramaboli
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is the second-most common cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Despite advances in cancer early detection, prevention and treatment, breast cancer is still a major health challenge due to low survival caused by breast cancer metastasis. This warrants critical attention and intervention. From the proteomic standpoint, a protein-based multiplex system that provides large array of informative signals for cancer identification and prognosis is still limited. In this dissertation work, we developed two mass spectrometry-based strategies involving chemical biology tools for rapid protein fingerprinting of breast cancer cell lines, and for probing the O-linked N-acetylglucosamine …
Neutering Neoliberalism: Masculinities And Gore Capitalism In Rubem Fonseca’S Crime Novels, David William Hancock
Neutering Neoliberalism: Masculinities And Gore Capitalism In Rubem Fonseca’S Crime Novels, David William Hancock
Theses and Dissertations
This study presents close readings of Rubem Fonseca’s Agosto (1990), A grande arte (1983), Bufo & Spallanzani (1985), and O seminarista (2009), to suggest they condemn Neoliberalism’s role in creating a global culture of violence, as they problematize its rhetoric of domination and uncover its heteropatriarchal, consumerist ideology, disguised as fact or ‘common-sense.’ The four chapters are divided according to the different theoretical concepts that accompany the four principal texts’ common critique of Neoliberal masculinity, as it functions to uphold the interdependent hierarchies of race, class and gender. Fonseca’s texts also imply the reader's’ complicity in a global culture of …

Utilization Of Satellite-Derived Salinity To Study Indian Ocean Climate Variability, Joseph Matthew D’Addezio
Utilization Of Satellite-Derived Salinity To Study Indian Ocean Climate Variability, Joseph Matthew D’Addezio
Theses and Dissertations
For several decades, researchers have explored Indian Ocean climate variability primarily using numerical models because of a lack of observations. Remote sensing technology has helped overcome this scarcity of observational data, but satellite-derived salinity has only been recently made available by the ESA’s Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS, operating since November 2009-present) and NASA’s Aquarius SAC-D (operated during June 2011-June 2015) satellites. Along with the Lagrangian in situ Argo floats array, these new datasets may be used to validate widely used numerical models, such as the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM), and also potentially observe new salinity phenomena that …
