Got Guts? The Iconic Streams Of The U.S. Virgin Islands And The Law’S Ephemeral Edge, Jesse Reiblich, Thomas T. Ankersen

The legal status of “guts” — the ephemeral streams of the U.S. Virgin Islands that typically flow only after rainfall — is uncertain. Furthermore, it is unclear what, if any, property interest the Government of the Virgin Islands, and the public, have in these watercourses. This uncertainty stems from the non-navigable nature of guts, and is compounded by the Virgin Islands’ unique legal system, a legal system that recognizes at least some Danish law from its colonial past, and has seemingly inconsistent provisions purporting to confer legal and regulatory interests in these guts to the Government of the Virgin Islands. …

Development Of A Luminescent Polymer Sensor Array For The Discrimination Of Carboxylates And Further Improvements In A Solvent Programmable Polymer, William J. Richardson

This thesis summarizes the work performed on two stimuli responsive polymer projects. The first project used a lanthanide based luminescent polymer to create a sensor array for carboxylate analytes. Initial attempts incorporated molecular imprinting as a means to incorporate unique selectivity into the polymer by introducing acetate, benzoate, and phenylacetate as templates prior to polymerization. This process was successful at creating unique sensing elements for the array, but the polymers lacked the specific selectivity typically seen in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Instead, a ligand displacement mechanism that relied on multiple sensors with different labile anion ligands directly complexed with the …

We present results in three different arenas of discrete mathematics. Let La(n, H) denote the cardinality of the largest family on the Boolean lattice that does not contain H as a subposet. Denote π(H) := limn→∞ La(n,H) (bn/ n2c) . A crown O2k for k ≥ 2 is a poset on 2 levels whose Hasse diagram is a cycle. Griggs and Lu (2009) showed π(O4k) = 1 for k ≥ 2. Heterogeneous Catalysis plays an extremely important role in the world. Metal particles supported on oxide supports are the most widely employed heterogeneous catalysts. In order to provide insight into the development of new catalytic materials, a fundamental understanding of surface reactions is required. Vapor-deposited metal clusters on single-crystal surfaces are well-defined systems that can be used to understand the structure-relationships in commercial catalysts. Secular changes refer to short-term biological changes ostensibly due to environmental factors. Two well-documented secular trends in many populations are earlier age of menarche and increasing stature. This study synthesizes data on maximum clavicle length and fusion of the medial epiphysis in 1840–1980 American birth cohorts to provide a comprehensive assessment of developmental and morphological change in the clavicle.

Clavicles from the Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection (n = 354), McKern and Stewart Korean War males (n = 341), Forensic Anthropology Data Bank (n = 1,239), and the McCormick Clavicle Collection (n = 1,137) were used in the analysis. Transition analysis …

Macrophomina crown and root rot has become a significant soil-borne disease issue in California. For many locations in the state, the disease is associated with fields that are no longer pre-plant, flat field fumigated with methyl bromide + chloropicrin. Inoculation experiments indicated that some differences in strawberry cultivar susceptibility to Macrophomina phaseolina were seen a short time after the inoculation, but as disease progressed such differences did not persist. Preliminary characterization studies of Macrophomina phaseolina isolates from strawberry indicated that such isolates may have a host preference for strawberry. Macrophomina phaseolina isolates from watermelon, thyme, and apple failed to cause …

Performance traits and body composition of juvenile hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis) in response to hypoxia were evaluated in replicate tanks maintained at constant dissolved oxygen concentrations that averaged 23.0 ± 2.3%, 39.7 ± 3.0%, and 105.5 ± 9.5% dissolved oxygen saturation. Fish were fed a commercially formulated feed daily to apparent satiation. Total feed intake and fish growth and yield increased linearly in response to increased dissolved oxygen concentration. Nutrient utilization was reduced significantly only at the greatest level of hypoxia. With the exception of whole-body protein content, whole body compositional indices and nutrient …

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) purified protein derivatives (PPDs) are immunologic reagents prepared from cultured filtrates of the type strain. Traditional pro-duction consists of floating culture incubation at 37°C, organism inactivation by autoclaving, coarse filtration, and protein precipitation. Three traditional production PPDs were used in this study including lot 9801, which served as a reference and has been used in the field for decades. Alternative production PPDs (0902A and 0902B), in which the autoclaving step was removed, were also analyzed in this study. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed protein smearing in traditional PPDs, but distinct bands were observed in the alternative PPD …

This study was conducted to assess major Aspergillus species and aflatoxins associated with groundnut seeds and cake in Eastern Ethiopia and evaluate growers’ management practices. A total of 160 groundnut seed samples from farmers’ stores and 50 groundnut cake samples from cafe and restaurants were collected. Fungal isolation was done from groundnut seed samples. Aspergillus flavus was the dominant species followed by Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin analyses of groundnut seed samples were performed using ultra performance liquid chromatography; 22.5% and 41.3% of samples were positive, with total aflatoxin concentrations of 786 and 3135 ng g⁻¹ from 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 …

Some heavy metals like zinc and copper are essential for enzymatic and metabolic function while others like lead and mercury are toxic and interfere with biological pathways. The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is an insect pest of corn and population suppression with chemical insecticides is an important management tool. Traits conferring organophosphate insecticide resistance have increased in frequency amongst D. v. virgifera populations, resulting in the reduced efficacy in many corn-growing regions of the USA. We used comparative functional genomic and quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping approaches to investigate the genetic basis of D. v. virgifera resistance to the organophosphate methyl-parathion. There is no consensus regarding seasonal changes in soil physical properties within and between rows in long-term no-till (NT) crop production systems. We hypothesized that soil physical properties in a Rhodic Ferralsol under long-term NT differed within and between rows and that these changes are influenced by wetting and drying cycles (WDC). This example demonstrates that even undergraduate students can collect, analyze, and build web applications for relevant spatial databases.
