Chiroptical Ionic Liquids, Benjamin Zercher
Chiroptical Ionic Liquids, Benjamin Zercher
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The synthesis and fluorescent analysis of chiral light emitting ionic liquids made from lanthanide-doped chiral amino acid ionic liquids is described in this thesis. The ionic liquids were composed of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) cation with enantiomers of the amino acids valine, proline, and aspartate as anionic counterions. These ionic liquids of varying amino acid composition were doped with europium trifluoromethanesulfonate (triflate) and analyzed by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The sign of the CPL signal corresponded to the handedness of the amino acids in the ionic liquids. Europium triflate concentration dependent CPL in both [TBA][Val] and [TBA][L-Pro] ionic liquids was measured from …

Etiological Study Of Molt Abnormalities In The African Penguin, Spheniscus Demersus, Carah Austin
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
An important life history event for African penguins is the annual molt, which restores healthy plumage for proper thermoregulation and waterproofing. This study examined three, not necessarily mutually exclusive, hypotheses to explain the etiology of improper molting in zoo and aquarium populations: (1) the syndrome is hereditary; (2) birds do not amass enough nutritional resources prior to the molt to allow the molt to progress normally; (3) the timing of the molt is disrupted by exogenous cues that are contrary to those experienced in the wild. A two-part survey was completed by 17 U.S. zoos and aquaria that returned information …

The Link Between American Deaf Culture And Dance: Assessing Nonverbal Communication And Recognizing The Value Of Deaf Dancers., Chloe Edelstein
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
As a dancer, it is of the utmost importance to know the history behind the origins of movement with intent. In a collegiate setting, we are immersed in the different styles and origins that have shaped the refinement and adaptations of dance into the genres that it exists today. But, I have recognized a lack of knowledge in one extraordinary facet; dance performed by those who are deaf. With this project, I have educated a group of dancers on the different aspects and struggles of being deaf within America and through the creation of a dance that mimics the rehearsal …

Investigation Of The Localization And Expression Of The G-Protein Coupled Receptor Fshr-1 In C. Elegans Neurons, Kyle Cherry
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Neurons communicate at specialized junctions called synapses. Synaptic transmission occurs when presynaptically released neurotransmitters bind to receptors either continuing (excitatory) or stopping (inhibitory) the signal in the postsynaptic cell. Excitatory to inhibitory (E:I) balance is critical for proper neurological function. This balance is achieved through the function of various proteins such as the ubiquitin ligase, the anaphase promoting complex (APC). My thesis project focuses on one potential APC substrate, a G protein-coupled receptor called FSHR-1, and its role in synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) in Caenorhabditis elegans. Previous data from our lab and others showed that worms lacking …

Effect Of Endophytes In Physcomitrella Patens On Cellular Respiration During Abiotic Stress, Michael Danh
Effect Of Endophytes In Physcomitrella Patens On Cellular Respiration During Abiotic Stress, Michael Danh
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Endophytes are bacteria or fungi that ubiquitously reside in plant tissue and do not cause apparent disease. With the mutually symbiotic relationships between plant and endophyte being scientifically evident, it is supported that endophytes provide an augmentative method to absorb nutrients and additional tolerance under abiotic stress for the plant while benefiting from the host plant’s reduced carbon sources. The moss Physcomitrella patens is expected to share the same type of mutualism with endophytes, being able to treat endophytes as endosymbionts and having a reduced carbon reservoir. However, it is unclear if these endophytic relationships alter under abiotic stress. In …

The Role Of Calcium In Pathogen Defense Responses In The Moss Mnium Cuspidatum, Morgan Blake
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
When exposed to stress, whether that be by pathogen, thermal or weather changes, or other components of the environment, plants employ a variety of defense mechanisms depending on the severity of the stress. When attacked by a pathogen, the moss Mnium cuspidatum utilizes an innate, basal response followed by hypersensitive response (HR) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Calcium is known to be involved in signaling cascades that mediate defense responses in other organisms. In the present study, lanthanum nitrate (LaNO3), methoxyerapamil (D600), and ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) were used to inhibit the presence of calcium in M. cuspidatum in …

Infertility and impaired fecundity affect 8.2 million women in the United States. Intercellular bridges are essential to the proper formation of germ cells in many organisms; therefore, learning more about how they are formed and regulated during the formation of sperm and eggs could provide insight into how defects in their structure can impact fertility. Intercellular bridges are actin-rich structures that connect developing germ cells to each other and allow the transfer of materials. I used the development of the fruit fly egg as a model system to study formation and regulation of intercellular bridges. Specifically, I investigated the role …

The Role Of Religion In State Public Accommodations Laws, Elizabeth Sepper
Saint Louis University Law Journal
In this Article, I provide a comprehensive account of the role of religion in public accommodations laws. I analyze public accommodations statutes across the fifty states, identify their boundaries, and categorize their religious exemptions. In so doing, I interrogate and debunk misconceptions widely held even by legal scholars that: the Civil Rights Act is a representative public accommodations law; antidiscrimination obligations of retail establishments and social service providers are unusual or new; exemptions for religious entities or small businesses are common; and public accommodations laws have as their central aim remedying market exclusion.
Part I sets out the basic framework …

Bioanalytical Applications Of Protein-Ligand Interactions, Kaitlynn Richelle Davenport
Bioanalytical Applications Of Protein-Ligand Interactions, Kaitlynn Richelle Davenport
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Biorecognition is the ability of biological macromolecules, particularly proteins, to interact and form specific complexes with other macromolecules or small molecules, called ligands. Complementarity of the ligand to the binding site of the macromolecule with regard to both shape and electrostatic interactions increases the chances of the interaction to occur and stabilizes the resulting complex. The high specificity and affinity frequently observed with protein-ligand interactions has found wide application in fields such as biotechnology and medicine ranging from affinity separations to drug screening. In this work, specific protein-ligand interactions were exploited for two conceptually different types of applications. The first …

Investigations In Cryptic Species: Considerations And Applications For Estimating Detection, Occupancy, And Abundance Of Semi-Aquatic Snakes, Christian Robert Oldham
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
Snake species are notoriously difficult to study in the field due to their cryptic natural-histories and secretive behaviors. Difficulties associated with detection present challenges estimating parameters including occupancy and abundance, as well as responses to habitat degradation. Our objectives were to use Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) telemetry to enhance detection of Queensnakes (Regina septemvittata) as compared to traditional capture-mark-recapture (CMR) survey techniques and to examine occupancy and abundance of Queensnakes and Northern Watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) in streams of differing levels of anthropogenic impact within Central Kentucky. During 2013, we captured Queensnakes and implanted them with PIT …

Using A “Messy” Problem As A Departmental Assessment Of Undergraduates' Ability To Think Like Psychologists, Patricia Marten Dibartolo, Lauren E. Duncan, Minh Ly, Alan N. Rudnitsky
Psychology: Faculty Publications
This paper presents a case study of faculty in a psychology department whose shared questions about pedagogy and learning informed a data-driven curricular review and revision using an open-ended assessment that privileged deep learning. This paper describes the development of this assessment and how its results across the arc of the major led to a revision of the department’s curriculum, including the creation of new courses that focused on developing students’ abilities to ‘think like psychologists.’ The study indicates that faculty intuitions of potential problems in student learning can be successfully assessed and then addressed through curricular changes.

High And Dry: Post-Fire Tree Seedlingestablishment In Subalpine Forestsdecreases With Post-Fire Drought Andlarge Stand-Replacing Burn Patches, Brian J. Harvey, Daniel C. Donato, Monica G. Turner
Aspen Bibliography
Aim: Climate warming and increased wildfire activity are hypothesized to catalyse biogeographical shifts, reducing the resilience of fire-prone forests world-wide. Two key mechanisms underpinning hypotheses are: (1) reduced seed availability in large stand-replacing burn patches, and (2) reduced seedling establishment/survival after post-fire drought. We tested for regional evidence consistent with these mechanisms in an extensive fire-prone forest biome by assessing post-fire tree seedling establishment, a key indicator of forest resilience.
Location: Subalpine forests, US Rocky Mountains.
Methods: We analysed post-fire tree seedling establishment from 184 field plots where stand-replacing forest fires were followed by varying post-fire climate conditions. Generalized linear …
