Publications and Research

Behaving efficiently (optimally or near-optimally) is central to animals’ adaptation to their environment. Much evolutionary biology assumes, implicitly or explicitly, that optimal behavioural strategies are genetically inherited, yet the behaviour of many animals depends crucially on learning. The question of how learning contributes to optimal behaviour is largely open. Here we propose an associative learning model that can learn optimal behaviour in a wide variety of ecologically relevant circumstances. The model learns through chaining, a term introduced by Skinner to indicate learning of behaviour sequences by linking together shorter sequences or single behaviours. © 2016 The Author(s). In the current study, the imprinting control region of the mouse Peg3 domain was deleted to test its functional impact on animal growth and survival. The paternal transmission of the deletion resulted in complete abolition of the transcription of two paternally expressed genes, Peg3 and Usp29, causing the reduced body weight of the pups. In contrast, the maternal transmission resulted in the unexpected transcriptional up-regulation of the remaining paternal allele of both Peg3 and Usp29, causing the increased body weight and survival rates. Maternal smoking is one of the most preventable causes of adverse birth outcomes and poses substantial health risks for both the mother and child. Evidence suggests that increased stress and depression is associated with smoking behaviors, including smoking cessation and smoking relapse. However, few studies have prospectively examined these associations and no studies have examined neighborhood crime, an important stressor for many low-income women, as a predictor of smoking cessation and relapse among this population. Crop plants exhibit a wide diversity of defensive traits and strategies to protect themselves from damage by herbivorous pests and disease. These defensive traits may be naturally occurring or artificially selected through crop breeding, including introduction via genetic engineering. While these traits can have obvious and direct impacts on herbivorous pests, many have profound effects on higher trophic levels, including the natural enemies of herbivores. Multi-trophic effects of host plant resistance have the potential to influence, both positively and negatively, biological control. Abstract: This study examined the effectiveness of Problem Solving Strategy (PSS) to improve problem-solving skills at the junior high school students. This is an experimentation research with equivalent time series design. In general, the results showed problem solving strategy (PSS) effected to enhancing problem solving skills at junior high school students, which is proved through hypothetical testing, at pretest and posttest using the scale-test, counted z score 2,201 at significance level (p) = 0.028 < 0.05. The results of hypothetical testing, using the rubric-test, 1st test to 2nd test counted z score 2,207 at significance level (p) = 0.027 < 0.05, which means that H0 is rejected, next on 2nd test to 3rd test counted z scores 2,220 at significance level (p) = 0.026 < 0.05, which means that H0 is rejected and hypothetical testing in 3rd test to 1st test counted z score 2,227 at significance level (p) = 0.027 < 0.05, which means that H0 rejected and H1 accepted. Based on the findings of this research, it is advisable for the teacher guidance and counseling in schools should be able to provide the students needs, train students to develop cognitive skills in problems solving, from an early age by using the technique of problem solving strategy (PSS) as were tested in this study. For further research should further explore the subject with a level and a higher age.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an uncommon malignancy characterised by the proliferation of clonal plasma cells. There are few published reports describing the extramedullary presentation of MM manifesting primarily in the head and neck region. In addition, the occurrence of an isolated relapse of MM in these sites is exceedingly rare. We report a 56-year-old female who presented to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2010 with sudden-onset numbness of the lower lip. Candida albicans behaviors are affected by pH, an important environmental variable. Filamentous growth is a pH-responsive behavior, where alkaline conditions favor hyphal growth and acid conditions favor growth as yeast. We employed filamentous growth as a tool to study the impact of pH on the hyphal growth regulator Cyr1, and we report that downregulation of cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling by acidic pH contributes to the inhibition of hyphal growth in minimal medium with GlcNAc. Ras1 and Cyr1 are generally required for efficient hyphal growth, and the effects of low pH on Ras1 proteolysis and GTP binding are consistent with diminished …

The aims of the original proposed project remain the same, that is, to test the hypothesis that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for stormwater harvesting is a technically feasible, socially and environmentally acceptable, economically viable, and permittable option for developing new water supplies for arid Western urban ecosystems experiencing increasing population, and climate change pressures on existing water resources.
