Statistical Techniques To Model And Optimize Performance Of Scientific, Numerically Intensive Workloads, Steena Dominica Steven Monteiro
Statistical Techniques To Model And Optimize Performance Of Scientific, Numerically Intensive Workloads, Steena Dominica Steven Monteiro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Projecting performance of applications and hardware is important to several market segments—hardware designers, software developers, supercomputing centers, and end users. Hardware designers estimate performance of current applications on future systems when designing new hardware. Software developers make performance estimates to evaluate performance of their code on different architectures and input datasets. Supercomputing centers try to optimize the process of matching computing resources to computing needs. End users requesting time on supercomputers must provide estimates of their application’s run time, and incorrect estimates can lead to wasted supercomputing resources and time. However, application performance is challenging to predict because it is …
Oocyte Quality: Molecular Constituents Altered In The Oocyte Due To Various Environmental Factors, Lindsay Cox
Oocyte Quality: Molecular Constituents Altered In The Oocyte Due To Various Environmental Factors, Lindsay Cox
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An estimated 1.6 million American couples struggle with infertility. Some causes for poor fertility can be clearly defined but in many instances, subfertility is unexplained. Poor oocyte quality is now considered to be a main contributing factor for many causes of infertility. Good oocyte quality is crucial for many processes including embryo development and maintaining pregnancy. There is a possibility that any alterations to the oocyte can have long lasting effects on embryo development and the health of the offspring. The oocyte is very sensitive to any perturbations to its surrounding environment. Transcripts for apoptosis inhibitors and epigenetic modifiers were …
Simple Soil Quality Tests And Organic Management Practices For Orchards In The Intermountain West, Esther Oline Thomsen
Simple Soil Quality Tests And Organic Management Practices For Orchards In The Intermountain West, Esther Oline Thomsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Soil health is often overlooked as a long-term management strategy as growers face an increasing number of short-term management challenges in the Intermountain West. The costs of inputs are rising and water resources are becoming more limited. Soil with poor health typically requires more amendments and fertlizers to meet crop needs. Soil health tests can help reveal management practices that reduce soil health, as well as those that improve soil health. Practices known to improve soil health are reduced to no tillage, cover crop use- especially legumes, and addition of mulch and other organic materials. Soil health testing is not …
Development Of A Student-Perspective Based Scale On Instructor Approachability, Xin Zhao
Development Of A Student-Perspective Based Scale On Instructor Approachability, Xin Zhao
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students respond to instructor characteristics. Instructor approachability is one such characteristic that is often discussed yet inconsistently defined in the literature. The purpose of this study was to construct and validate a new measure, the Instructor Approachability Scale. The present study used a rationally derived process to generate a list of items that are representative of instructor approachability. Factor analysis was conducted to establish psychometrics for the scale. Regression analyses were then conducted to examine the impact of instructor approachability on several outcomes, including students’ help-seeking attitudes, satisfaction with the course, and mastery of course content. Several significant main …
Characterization Of The Substrate Interactions And Regulation Of Protein Arginine Methyltransferase, Yalemi Morales
Characterization Of The Substrate Interactions And Regulation Of Protein Arginine Methyltransferase, Yalemi Morales
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Protein arginine methylation is a posttranslational modification catalyzed by the family of proteins known as the protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs). Thousands of methylated arginines have been found in mammalian cells. Many targets of arginine regulation are involved in important cellular processes like transcription, RNA transport and processing, translation, cellular signaling, and DNA repair. Since PRMT dysregulation has been linked to a variety of disease states, understanding how the activity of the PRMTs is regulated is of paramount importance. PRMT1 is the predominant PRMT, responsible for about 85% of all arginine methylation in cells, but very little is known about how …
Laboratory Experiences In Mathematical Biology For Post-Secondary Mathematics Students, Matthew Lewis
Laboratory Experiences In Mathematical Biology For Post-Secondary Mathematics Students, Matthew Lewis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In addition to the memorization, algorithmic skills and vocabulary which is the default focus in many mathematics classrooms, professional mathematicians are expected to creatively apply known techniques, construct new mathematical approaches and communicate with and about mathematics. We propose that students can learn these professional, higher level skills through Laboratory Experiences in Mathematical Biology (LEMBs) which put students in the role of mathematics researcher creating mathematics to describe and understand biological data. LEMBs are constructed so they require no specialized equipment and can easily be run in the context of a college math class. Students collect data and develop mathematical …

Blood-Brain Barrier Transport Machineries And Targeted Therapy Of Brain Diseases, Jaleh Barar, Mohammad Rafi, Mohamad Mostafa Pourseif, Yadollah Omidi
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Introduction: Desired clinical outcome of pharmacotherapy of brain diseases largely depends upon the safe drug delivery into the brain parenchyma. However, due to the robust blockade function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), drug transport into the brain is selectively controlled by the BBB formed by brain capillary endothelial cells and supported by astrocytes and pericytes. Methods: In the current study, we have reviewed the most recent literature on the subject to provide an insight upon the role and impacts of BBB on brain drug delivery and targeting. Results: All drugs, either small molecules or macromolecules, designated to treat brain diseases …

Surviving Catastrophe: Resource Allocation And Plant Interactions Among The Mosses Of Mount St. Helens Volcano, Trevor David Williams
Surviving Catastrophe: Resource Allocation And Plant Interactions Among The Mosses Of Mount St. Helens Volcano, Trevor David Williams
Dissertations and Theses
Mosses are some of the first colonizers to disturbed sites, yet their roles in early plant community structuring are not well understood. The primary succession zones of volcanoes provide opportunities to conduct natural experiments into how mosses contribute to early plant community formation, as well as how the unique environments found in such zones affect plant traits, particularly those associated with stress tolerance. Though plant community changes have been well-documented since Mount St. Helens (MSH) volcano erupted in 1980, the volcano's moss assemblages, their influence on other plants, and their potential roles in chemical-mediated competition and biogeochemical cycling have garnered …

It also offers contemporary strategies that can serve as activist modes of reframing the act and connotations associated with menstruation.
Using Storytelling To Raise Interest In Vultures, Elise C. Osenga
Using Storytelling To Raise Interest In Vultures, Elise C. Osenga
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
The tradition of oral storytelling is an art that stretches back to humankind's earliest cultures. While storytelling is often considered as a form of entertainment, it has also long been used as a teaching tool as well-- a way of engaging listeners to come to new understanding of their world through subtle means. It is my belief that stories, particularly stories with a clear tie to students' sense of place, can be more widely applied to effectively generate interest in specific scientific topics and help students to form emotional connections with the topics under discussion. The following personal narrative describes …

From Stem To Steam: Students’ Beliefs About The Use Of Their Creativity, Ayse Tugba Oner, Sandra Bonorden Nite, Robert M. Capraro, Mary Margaret Capraro
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
To be successful in a STEM career, not only STEM knowledge and skills but also creativity is required. Therefore, the arts have been integrated into STEM disciplines and subsequently designated as STEAM education (Sousa & Pilecki, 2013). One example of informal learning environments that STEAM education provided is a summer camp. In this study, middle and highs school students’ use of their creativity in the Project-based Learning (PBL) courses was examined to determine students’ belief about the use of the arts in STEM activities. The results showed that students believed that they used their creativity in eight of the nine …
Reconciling The Divide: Common Processes In Science And Arts Education, Lori A. Fulton, Jamie Simpson-Steele
Reconciling The Divide: Common Processes In Science And Arts Education, Lori A. Fulton, Jamie Simpson-Steele
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Many see the sciences and arts as two distinct fields – one objective the other subjective; however, we see the two having more in common than different. These commonalities formed the basis for a STEAM framework, which examines the intersections of five processes: noticing, wondering, visualizing, exploring, and communicating. This framed a professional development workshop on STEAM for elementary teachers. Here we define and explore these processes through both science and art perspectives, and share examples of how each of these processes were integrated to support learning. We believe that STEAM provides a well-rounded experience, allowing learners to make connections …

Pbis Teams Perceived Connections Between Culture And Pbis Implementation, Kathryn M. Mcphee, Kiarra Givhan
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Currently in Georgia, there is a strategic plan to “improve the climate in Georgia’s school and community settings through the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports framework.” (GaDOE, 2013, p.2). As the GaDOE’s strategic plan develops, schools are becoming more diverse with students representing a range of academic, behavioral and cultural experiences and backgrounds (Cohn & Caumont, 2016). Researchers have demonstrated that racial/ethnic disparities exist in academic achievement, discipline practices and mental health services provided in schools (e.g., Fallon et al., 2015). Thus, to improve educational experiences for all students through PBIS, considering how culture and context influence what is being …
Sport-Specific Risk And Protective Factors For Low Back Pain In Olympic Class Sailors: An Epidemiologic Analytic Cohort Study, Shawn E. Hunt
Sport-Specific Risk And Protective Factors For Low Back Pain In Olympic Class Sailors: An Epidemiologic Analytic Cohort Study, Shawn E. Hunt
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation determined the effect of known and theoretical risk factors for LBP in the Olympic class sailors utilizing a cohort design. A secondary goal was to determine if any factors related to sailors or sailing would provide a protective effect, lowering the risk of LBP. Sailors exposed to hiking (a sailing-specific activity) and non-hiking sailing classes were analyzed for the effect of hiking activity as a risk factor for LBP. Hiking exposure increases risk of LBP. Exposure to more than two hours of unloading the sailors’ boats and equipment prior to a regatta was a second unique risk factor …

Effects Of Cell Cycle Noise On Excitable Gene Circuits, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Chinmaya Gupta, Matthew R. Bennett, Krešimir Josić, William Ott
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We assess the impact of cell cycle noise on gene circuit dynamics. For bistable genetic switches and excitable circuits, we find that transitions between metastable states most likely occur just after cell division and that this concentration effect intensifies in the presence of transcriptional delay. We explain this concentration effect with a three-states stochastic model. For genetic oscillators, we quantify the temporal correlations between daughter cells induced by cell division. Temporal correlations must be captured properly in order to accurately quantify noise sources within gene networks.

Systems and methods for automatic FOV selection in immunoscore computation that involve reading images for individual markers from an unmixed multiplex slide or single stain slides, and computing the tissue region mask from the individual marker image. The heat map of each marker is determined by applying the low pass filter on the individual marker image channel and selecting the top K highest intensity regions from the heat map as the candidate FOVs for each marker. The candidate FOVs from the individual marker images are merged together in the same coordinate system by either adding all of the FOVs together …
