Journal Articles: Epidemiology
Anopheles gambiae are a major vector of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Viruses that naturally infect these mosquitoes may impact their physiology and ability to transmit pathogens. We therefore used metagenomics sequencing to search for viruses in adult Anopheles mosquitoes collected from Liberia, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. We identified a number of virus and virus-like sequences from mosquito midgut contents, including 14 coding-complete genome segments and 26 partial sequences. The coding-complete sequences define new viruses in the order Mononegavirales, and the families Flaviviridae, and Totiviridae. The identification of a flavivirus infecting Anopheles mosquitoes broadens our understanding of the evolution and host …
When Are Medical Apps Medical? Off-Label Use And The Food And Drug Administration, William H. Krieger
When Are Medical Apps Medical? Off-Label Use And The Food And Drug Administration, William H. Krieger
Philosophy Faculty Publications
People have a love/hate relationship with rapidly changing healthcare technology. While consumer demand for medical apps continues to grow as rapidly as does supply (there are over 100,000 health, wellness and medical applications, or ‘apps’ on the market), healthcare professionals and safety experts worry about the impact of these apps on the health consumer. In response to the rapidly growing mobile healthcare sector, the Food and Drug Administration has put forth guidelines to regulate ‘mobile medical apps’ (MMAs), those health-related apps that are (self) designated as medical devices. In this article, I argue that this decision, to only regulate apps …

Treacher Collins Syndrome: Challenges For Anesthesia Care, Clara Smith
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
This poster discusses the disorder known as Treacher Collins syndrome with a focus on understanding the syndrome and unique challenges in patient care. Hallmark features of the disorder present unique challenges for healthcare professionals, especially those providing anesthesia care. Patients with Treacher Collins syndrome are more much more likely than patients without the disorder to have a difficult airway. This poster explores the condition and some of the implications for providing safe patient care and achieving positive outcomes.

Anaphylaxis: Signs, Symptoms, And Pathophysiology, Brian A. Snyder
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Anaphylaxis is an emergent, life-threatening condition and quick provider response is imperative. When a patient has this acute and severe Immunoglobulin E hypersensitivity immune response, the health care provider must be ready to immediately act using an expert level of awareness. This project serves as an overview of this important topic and should cultivate a spirit of inquiry into institutional policies for management, as well as to inspire further research.

Understanding Ige-Mediated Food Allergies, Melissa M. Malinky
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Working as a nurse in a pediatric Allergy/Immunology clinic one would observe that the prevalence and resulting awareness of IgE-mediated food allergies in children has increased over the past decade. Many schools and camps are now going “nut free” and requiring Food Allergy Action Plans from a diagnosing physician. A study by Gupta et al. (2011) estimated 8% of children in the United States have a food allergy. Primary care providers (PCPs) are at the forefront of recognition, diagnosis, treatment and patient education of IgE-mediated food allergies. PCPs can benefit greatly from further education of the current evidence based diagnostic …

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Seasonal fluctuations in food availability can affect diets of consumers, which in turn may influence the physiological state of individuals and shape intra- and inter-specific patterns of resource use. High-elevation ecosystems often exhibit a pronounced seasonal “pulse” in productivity, although few studies document how resource use and energetic condition by avian consumers change in relation to food-resource availability in these ecosystems. We tested the hypothesis that seasonal increases (pulses) in food resources in high-elevation sagebrush ecosystems result in 2 changes after the pulse, relative to the before-pulse period: (1) reduced diet breadth of, and overlap between, 2 sympatric sparrow species; …
The Role Of The Antioxidant System During Intense Endurance Exercise: Lessons From Migrating Birds, Clara Cooper-Mullin, Scott R. Mcwilliams
The Role Of The Antioxidant System During Intense Endurance Exercise: Lessons From Migrating Birds, Clara Cooper-Mullin, Scott R. Mcwilliams
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
During migration, birds substantially increase their metabolic rate and burn fats as fuel and yet somehow avoid succumbing to overwhelming oxidative damage. The physiological means by which vertebrates such as migrating birds can counteract an increased production of reactive species (RS) are rather limited: they can upregulate their endogenous antioxidant system and/or consume dietary antioxidants (prophylactically or therapeutically). Thus, birds can alter different components of their antioxidant system to respond to the demands of long-duration flights, but much remains to be discovered about the complexities of RS production and antioxidant protection throughout migration. Here, we use bird migration as an …

Dislodgement Force And Shell Morphology Vary According To Wave Exposure In A Tropical Gastropod (Cittarium Pica), Graham E. Forrester, Reuben J.A. Macfarlan, Allison J. Holevoet, Sarah Merolla
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Wave exposure has strong influences on population density, morphology and behaviour of intertidal species in temperate zones, but little is known about how intertidal organisms in tropical regions respond to gradients in wave exposure. We tested whether dislodgement force and shell shape of a tropical gastropod, Cittarium pica, differs among shores that vary in wave exposure. After adjusting for body size, we found that C. pica from exposed shores required greater dislodgement force to remove them from the shore, had slightly larger opercula (the closure to the shell aperture), and were slightly squatter in shape (reduced in shell height …

Porous Silica Coated Spherical Microresonator For Vapor Phase Sensing Of Ammonia At A Sub-Ppm Level, Arun Kumar Mallik, Gerald Farrell, Dejun Liu, Vishnan Kavungal, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova
Conference Papers
A new type of fiber optic sensor for detection and quantification of ammonia (NH3) vapors is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This sensor is based on a spherical silica micro resonator coated with porous silica gel. Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the micro resonator are excited by evanescent coupling to a tapered fiber with a 3.3 µm waist diameter. The optical properties of the porous silica layer change when it is exposed to ammonia vapor, leading to a spectral shift of the WGM resonant wavelengths. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor has been tested by exposing it to different low level …

Waracs: Wrappers To Automate The Reconstruction Of Ancestral Character States, Michael Gruenstaeudl
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Premise of the study: Reconstructions of ancestral character states are among the most widely used analyses for evaluating the morphological, cytological, or ecological evolution of an organismic lineage. The software application Mesquite remains the most popular application for such reconstructions among plant scientists, even though its support for automating complex analyses is limited. A software tool is needed that automates the reconstruction and visualization of ancestral character states with Mesquite and similar applications. Methods and Results: A set of command line–based Python scripts was developed that (a) communicates standardized input to and output from the software applications Mesquite, BayesTraits, and …

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) intends to monitor mosquito populations across its broad geographical range of sites because of their prevalence in food webs, sensitivity to abiotic factors, and relevance for human health. We describe the design of mosquito population sampling in the context of NEON's long‐term continental scale monitoring program, emphasizing the sampling design schedule, priorities, and collection methods. Freely available NEON data and associated field and laboratory samples, will increase our understanding of how mosquito abundance, demography, diversity, and phenology are responding to land use and climate change.

Increasing inclusion of underrepresented minority and first-generation students in mentored research experiences both increases diversity in the life sciences research community and prepares students for successful careers in these fields. However, analyses of the impact of mentoring approaches on specific student gains are limited. This study addresses the impact of mentoring strategies within research experiences on broadening access to the life sciences by examining both how these experiences impacted student success and how the quality of mentorship affected the development of research and academic skills for a diverse population of students at a public, minority-serving institution. Institutional data on student …
Contingent Constitutionality, Legislative Facts, And Campaign Finance Law, Michael T. Morley
Contingent Constitutionality, Legislative Facts, And Campaign Finance Law, Michael T. Morley
Scholarly Publications
Many of the Supreme Court's important holdings concerning campaign finance law are not pure matters of constitutional interpretation. Rather, they are "contingent" constitution- al determinations: the Court's conclusions rest in substantial part on legislative facts about the world that the Court finds, intuits, or assumes to be true. While earlier commentators have recognized the need to improve legislative factfinding by the Supreme Court, other aspects of its treatment of legislative facts-particularly in the realm of campaign finance- require reform as well. Stare decisis purportedly insulates the Court's purely legal holdings and interpretations from future challenge. Factually contingent constitutional rulings should, …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper presents the method of soil microorganisms identification from the microscopic digital images. The proposed approach includes: segmentation of the image, feature generation, selection of the most important features and the final recognition stage applying five different solutions of classifiers. The paper presents and discusses the results concerning the recognition of several most popular soil microorganisms: Bacillus subtilis, Paenibacillus glucanolyticus, Rachnella aquatilis, Scoleobasidium sp., Trichoderma sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus atrophaeus, Azotobacter sp., Streptomyces sp. and other bacterias and fungi. The proposed system enables the recognition of the microorganisms with the accuracy close to 98%.
Optimal Control Of An Sir Epidemic Model With A Saturated Treatment, Abid Ali Lashari
Optimal Control Of An Sir Epidemic Model With A Saturated Treatment, Abid Ali Lashari
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we formulate an optimal control problem for an SIR epidemic model with saturated incidence and saturated treatment. Two main efforts, namely treatment and vaccination are considered to limit the disease transmission. The impacts of vaccination and treatment on the disease transmission are discussed through the basic reproduction number. Then to achieve control of the disease, a control problem is formulated and the existence of the control is shown. Two control functions are used, one for vaccinating the susceptible and the other for treatment efforts for infectious individuals. Appropriate optimal control methods are used to characterize the optimal …

Solution Of Inverse Kinematics Problem Using Genetic Algorithms, Shaher Momani, Zaer S. Abo-Hammour, Othman Mk. Alsmadi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, the solution of inverse kinematics problem of robot manipulators using genetic algorithms (GA) is presented. Two versions of genetic algorithms are used which include the conventional GA and the continuous GA. The inverse kinematics problem is formulated as an optimization problem based on the concept of minimizing the accumulative path deviation in the absence of any obstacles in the workspace. Simulation results show that the continuous GA outperforms the conventional GA from all aspects. The superiority of the continuous GA is seen in that it will always provide smooth and faster solutions as compared with the conventional …

Akaike Information Criterion And Fourth-Order Kernel Method For Line Transect Sampling (Lts), Ali Algarni, Ahmad Almutlg
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Parametric and noparametric approaches were used to fit line transect data. Different parametric detection functions are suggested to compute the smoothing parameter of the nonparametric fourth-order kernel estimator. Among the different candidate parametric detection functions, the researcher suggests to use Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) to select the most appropriate one of them to fit line transect data. More specifically, four different parametric models are considered in this research. Where as two models were taken to satisfy the shoulder condition assumption, the other two do not. Once the appropriate model is determined, it can be used to select the smoothing parameter …

Optimization Of Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent Algorithm Via Power Spectrum Method, Yang Song, Tao Chen, Jianli Wang, Bing Qiao
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A method is proposed to optimized the adaptive optics (AO) system based on the stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm. In order to increase the speed of convergence, we use the power spectrum method. First of all, we analysis the relation between the atmosphere turbulence power spectrum which can be described as Von Karman spectrum and the stochastic perturbation, and then, we optimize the cutoff frequency of the Von Karman spectrum based on the dependency of the two item mentioned before, finally, an AO model based on the SPGD algorithm is set up, and the phase aberration with the Von …
Electromagnetic Field And Rotation Effects On S-Waves Propagation In A Non-Homogeneous Anisotropic Incompressible Medium Under Initial Stress And Gravity Field, S. M. Abo-Dahab
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, shear waves propagation in a non-homogeneous anisotropic incompressible medium under influence of the electromagnetic field, gravity field, rotation and initially stressed medium has been studied. Analytical analysis reveals that the velocity of propagation of the shear waves depends upon the direction of propagation, the anisotropy, magnetic field, rotation, gravity field, non-homogeneity of the medium, and the initial stress. The frequency equation that determines the velocity of the shear waves has been obtained. The dispersion equations have been obtained and investigated for different cases. In fact, these equations are an agreement with the corresponding classical results when the …

Perceived Weight Discrimination And 10-Year Risk Of Allostatic Load Among Us Adults, Maya Vadiveloo, Joseimer Mattei
Perceived Weight Discrimination And 10-Year Risk Of Allostatic Load Among Us Adults, Maya Vadiveloo, Joseimer Mattei
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Background
Discrimination promotes multisystem physiological dysregulation termed allostatic load, which predicts morbidity and mortality. It remains unclear whether weight-related discrimination influences allostatic load.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to prospectively examine 10-year associations between weight discrimination, allostatic load, and its components among adults 25–75 years in the Midlife Development in the US Biomarker Substudy.
Methods
Participants with information on weight discrimination were analyzed (n=986). At both timepoints, participants self-reported the frequency of perceived weight discrimination across nine scenarios as “never/rarely” (scored as 0), “sometimes” (1), or “often” (2). The two scores were averaged and then dichotomized …
