To date, 13 species of Ponto-Caspian amphipods have been reported from the inland waters of Turkey. Two, probably overlooked species, Echinogammarus trichiatus and Dikerogammarus villosus, are here recorded for the first time from this country. Due to the atypical morphology, the identity of E. Trichiatus was also verified with molecular methods, based on the mtDNA COI barcode. Both species, along with five other co-occurring Ponto-Caspian amphipods, were collected from Lake Durusu in September 2007. Our finding reveals high diversity of amphipods in this water body. It also presents the southernmost known localities of both species, and expands the checklist of …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In order to explore the role of prolactin (PRL) and the prolactin receptor (PRLR) during metamorphosis of amphibians, both cDNAs from the Chinese brown frog Rana chensinensis were identified. A PRL cDNA consisting of a 645-bp open reading frame and a PRLR cDNA consisting of a 1854-bp open reading frame were obtained. The amino acid sequence analysis indicated that there were 2 pairs of conserved Cys residues in both mature rcPRL and rcPRLR, and that their positions were conserved as well. Comparison of our results with those for other vertebrates implies that receptor recognition in anurans may not be pH-dependent. …

Comparison Of The Chromosome Banding Patterns In Dryomys Laniger And D. Nitedula From Turkey, Ati̇lla Arslan, Teoman Kankiliç, Tarkan Yorulmaz, Tolga Kankiliç, Jan Zima

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The karyotypes of Dryomys laniger and D. Nitedula from Turkey were studied using C-banding and AgNOR staining. The standard karyotypes found in both species were fairly similar to previously published data (2n = 46, NF = 92 in D. Laniger; 2n = 48, NF = 96 in D. Nitedula). The C-banding pattern revealed a relatively small amount of heterochromatin in both karyotypes and C-heterochromatin was concentrated at centromeric areas of most autosomes and the X chromosome. Heterochromatin changes have apparently not been responsible for karyotypic divergences between the studied species. The AgNORs were recorded in the pericentromeric region of two …
