Social Patterning In Adiposity In Adolescence: Prospective Observations From The Chinese Birth Cohort ‘‘Children Of 1997’’, L. L. Hui, Gabriel M. Leung, C. Mary Schooling

Publications and Research

Introduction: Low early life socio-economic position is more strongly associated with adiposity among women than men. We examined whether the sex difference of social patterning in general and central adiposity exists before adulthood.

Methods: In Hong Kong’s “Children of 1997” birth cohort, we used multivariable regression to examine the association of parental education, a marker of early life socio-economic position, with body mass index (BMI) (n = 7252, 88% follow-up) and waist-height ratio (n = 5636, 68% follow- up), at 14 years.

Results: Parental education of Grade 9 or below, compared to Grade 12 or above, was associated with higher …

This biological experimentation competencies map is a model created by members of the ACE-Bio Network of seven areas a competent biologist calls in when doing experimentation in biology. Each competency is represented by a summary word on a uniquely colored segment of the model. For presentation convenience, the seven major areas within experimentation in biology are mapped onto tables in a linear manner. However, this is not meant to convey a particular order that one must follow during experimentation. The areas are given equal weight and flexible order of their use throughout the process of experimentation. This work is meant …

Weak Rappers Rock More: Hermit Crabs Assess Their Own Agonistic Behaviour., Elizabeth Edmonds, Mark Briffa Jan 2016

Weak Rappers Rock More: Hermit Crabs Assess Their Own Agonistic Behaviour., Elizabeth Edmonds, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Fighting animals use a variety of information sources to make strategic decisions. A neglected potential source of information is an individual’s own performance during a fight. Surprisingly, this possibility has yet to be incorporated into the large body of theory concerning the evolution of aggressive behaviour. Here we test for the possibility that attacking hermit crabs monitor their own fight performance by experimentally dampening the impact of their shell rapping behaviour. Attackers with dampened raps did not show a reduction in the number of raps used. In contrast, they showed an increased frequency of a less intense agonistic behaviour, shell …

Use Of A Volunteer Monitoring Program To Assess Water Quality In A Tmdl Watershed Utilized For Recreational Use, Pickens County, South Carolina, Travis H. Nation, Leah A. Johnson

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Municipalities, regulatory agencies, and resource advocacy organizations are often tasked with the enormous responsibility of monitoring water quality and implementing management strategies for vast areas within their jurisdictions. A potential means for addressing the resulting sampling shortfall is the use of volunteer monitoring programs. The project reported herein demonstrates the use of QA/QC protocols developed by Georgia Adopt-a-Stream (AAS) to monitor water quality issues for Twelve Mile Creek located in Pickens County, SC. The Twelve Mile watershed has a storied past as a U.S. EPA Superfund site due to industrial PCB contamination. Recent mitigation efforts involving the removal of two …

Physiological Downstream Consequences And Tradeoffs Associated With Co2 Compensation In Marine Fish, Rachael M. Heuer Jan 2016

Physiological Downstream Consequences And Tradeoffs Associated With Co2 Compensation In Marine Fish, Rachael M. Heuer

Open Access Dissertations

Fish are renowned for their ability to defend blood pH following exposure to elevated ambient CO2, a trait that has undoubtedly led to their ability to thrive successfully in a wide variety of habitats. While the defense of internal pH is critical for survival, the sustained elevation of HCO3- and PCO2 that occurs as a part of this compensatory response could potentially lead to sub-lethal impacts. This point is underscored by a growing number of studies demonstrating negative effects of CO2, even at relatively low CO2 tensions. The goal of this dissertation was to assess potential downstream consequences and/or tradeoffs …

MicroRNA (miRNA) dysfunction is associated with a variety of human diseases, including cancer. Our previous study showed that miR-671-5p was deregulated throughout breast cancer progression. Here, we report for the first time that miR-671-5p is a tumor-suppressor miRNA in breast tumorigenesis. We found that expression of miR-671-5p was decreased significantly in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) compared to normal in microdissected formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues. Forkhead Box M1 (FOXM1), an oncogenic transcription factor, was predicted as one of the direct targets of miR-671-5p, which was subsequently confirmed by luciferase assays. Forced expression of miR-671-5p in breast cancer cell lines downregulated FOXM1 …

Experimental Genome-Wide Determination Of Rna Polyadenylation In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Stephen A. Bell, Chi Shen, Alishea Brown, Arthur G. Hunt

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The polyadenylation of RNA is a near-universal feature of RNA metabolism in eukaryotes. This process has been studied in the model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using low-throughput (gene-by-gene) and high-throughput (transcriptome sequencing) approaches that recovered poly(A)-containing sequence tags which revealed interesting features of this critical process in Chlamydomonas. In this study, RNA polyadenylation has been studied using the so-called Poly(A) Tag Sequencing (PAT-Seq) approach. Specifically, PAT-Seq was used to study poly(A) site choice in cultures grown in four different media types—Tris-Phosphate (TP), Tris-Phosphate-Acetate (TAP), High-Salt (HS), and High-Salt-Acetate (HAS). The results indicate that: 1. As reported before, the motif UGUAA is …

Detecting Between-Groups Heteroscedasticity In Moderated Multiple Regression With A Continuous Predictor And A Categorical Moderator: A Monte Carlo Study, Patrick J. Rosopa, Amber N. Schroeder, Jessica L. Doll

Management and Decision Sciences

Moderated multiple regression (MMR) is frequently used to test moderation hypotheses in the behavioral and social sciences. In MMR with a categorical moderator, between-groups heteroscedasticity is not uncommon and can inflate Type I error rates or reduce statistical power. Compared with research on remedial procedures that can mitigate the effects of this violated assumption, less research attention has focused on statistical procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity. In the current article, we briefly review such procedures. Then, using Monte Carlo methods, we compare the performance of various procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity in …

Bindels, Rafael R. Segura Munoz, Inés Martínez, Jens Walter, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Devin J. Rose

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Studies have suggested links between colonic fermentation of dietary fibers and improved metabolic health. The objectives of this study were to determine if non-digestible feruloylated oligo- and polysaccharides (FOPS), a maize-derived dietary fiber, could counteract the deleterious effects of high-fat (HF) feeding in mice and explore if metabolic benefits were linked to the gut microbiota. C57BL/6J mice (n = 8/group) were fed a low-fat (LF; 10 kcal% fat), HF (62 kcal% fat), or HF diet supplemented with FOPS (5%, w/w). Pronounced differences in FOPS responsiveness were observed: four mice experienced cecal enlargement and enhanced short chain fatty acid production, indicating …

Recently, there has been multi-agency promotion of entomophagy as an environmentallyfriendly source of food for the ever increasing human population especially in the developing countries. However, food quality and safety concerns must first be addressed in this context. We addressed these concerns in the present study using the edible stink bug Encosternum delegorguei, which is widely consumed in southern Africa. We analysed for mycotoxins, and health beneficials including antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids using liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-Qtof-MS) and coupled gas chromatography (GC)-MS. We also performed proximate analysis to determine nutritional …

With rights comes obligation. That is the lesson of a recent ruling from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, A.S. v. I.S., which held that a stepfather who fought for and won shared custody of his former stepchildren must also pay child support. Reaching the right result, this court nonetheless provides a cautionary tale for parents and stepparents about the future consequences of choices about childrearing during marriage.

Sequencing of nrDNA, plus four cp DNA regions: petN-psbM, trnS-trnG, trnD-trnT and trnL-trnF of newly acquired samples of J. excelsa from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Turkey showed little variation in J. excelsa (sensu stricto), except for the unusual situation in Lebanon, where J. excelsa and J. polycarpos (and likely J. p. var. turcomanica) grow near each other and may be hybridizing. The genetic composition of the eastern-most populations of J. excelsa in Turkey is unknown and deserves further study.

Size Matters: Individual Variation In Ectotherm Growth And Asymptotic Size, Richard B. King

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Body size, and, by extension, growth has impacts on physiology, survival, attainment of sexual maturity, fecundity, generation time, and population dynamics, especially in ectotherm animals that often exhibit extensive growth following attainment of sexual maturity. Frequently, growth is analyzed at the population level, providing useful population mean growth parameters but ignoring individual variation that is also of ecological and evolutionary significance. Our long-term study of Lake Erie Watersnakes, Nerodia sipedon insularum, provides data sufficient for a detailed analysis of population and individual growth. We describe population mean growth separately for males and females based on size of known age individuals …

The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) (Adelges tsugae Annand) is an invasive insect in the eastern United States. Since its initial detection in Richmond, Virginia, in 1951, HWA has spread to half of the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) natural range. Detection of early infestation symptoms via remote sensing requires the knowledge of the changes in reflectance resulting from physiological changes in the host as inflicted by the insect and the selection of equipment with the appropriate sensor characteristics. Laboratory-based reflectance measurements of infested and non-infested hemlock foliage collected from four sites in southern New Hampshire and Maine occurred biweekly …

Probiotic Treatment Reduces Appetite And Glucose Level In The Zebrafish Model, Silvia Falcinelli, Ana Rodiles, Suraj Unniappan, Simona Picchietti, Giorgia Gioacchini, Daniel Lee Merrifield, Oliana Carnevali

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractThe gut microbiota regulates metabolic pathways that modulate the physiological state of hunger or satiety. Nutrients in the gut stimulate the release of several appetite modulators acting at central and peripheral levels to mediate appetite and glucose metabolism. After an eight-day exposure of zebrafish larvae to probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus, high-throughput sequence analysis evidenced the ability of the probiotic to modulate the microbial composition of the gastrointestinal tract. These changes were associated with a down-regulation and up-regulation of larval orexigenic and anorexigenic genes, respectively, an up-regulation of genes related to glucose level reduction and concomitantly reduced appetite and body glucose level. …

Simulating Regimes Of Chemical Disturbance And Testing Impacts In The Ecosystem Using A Novel Programmable Dosing System, Mark Anthony Browne, Paul R. Brooks, Robert Clough, Andrew S. Fisher, Pinto M Mayer, Tasman P. Crowe

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Pollution is a global issue at the frontier between ecology, environmental science, management, engineering and policy. Legislation requires experiments to determine how much contamination an ecosystem can absorb before there are structural or functional changes. Yet, existing methods cannot realistically simulate regimes of chemical disturbance and determine impacts to assemblages in ecosystems. This is because they lack ecologically relevant species and biotic interactions, are logistically difficult to set up and lack environmentally relevant regimes of chemical and abiotic disturbance that organisms experience in polluted areas. We solved these long-standing environmental, logistical, experimental and ecological problems by developing a programmable dosing …

On Human Nature In The Thought Of Muhyiddin Ibn’ Arabi And The Western Tradition Within The Context Of The Film The Silence Of The Lambs, Ridade Öztürk

Journal of Religion & Film

This article will summarize views about ‘human nature’ proposed by leading philosophers of the Western Canon. These views will later be contrasted with the viewpoint of Muhyiddin Ibn’Arabi on ‘human nature’. The question of what it means to know the human rationally and scientifically, and the question of how much this way of knowing can penetrate the double-sided dark-and-light nature of the human as reflected in the serial killer Hannibal Lecter, is a central focus of the article. The article discusses the framework of Tasawwuf (Sufism) which views human nature as both created and divine, from the two perspectives of …
