Cone-In-Cone And Beef Mineralization Associated With Triassic Growth Basin Faulting And Shallow Shale Diagenesis, Edgeøya, Svalbard, Harmon D. Maher Jr., Kei Ogata, Alvar Braathen
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Cone-in-cone (CIC) and beef (BF) carbonate lenses ornament detachment zone faults underlying Triassic growth basins on Edgeøya. Field relationships place CIC and BF growth as during early diagenesis and a transition from hydroplastic to a later brittle-style of faulting that is marked by coarser calcite veining. Deformation is constrained to have occurred at<300 mdepth. Multiple models exist for CIC formation. For the Edgeøya example, textural analysis of thin-sections suggests that small tensile fractures and carbonate shell fragments nucleated development of calcite aggregates with CIC and BF morphology within unconsolidated to poorly consolidated sediment to form asymmetric antitaxial tensile aggregates subparallel to bedding and fault surfaces. The conical forms result from differential growth on stepped, cleavage-parallel faces of fibres facing host sediment, with preferential inclusion incorporation at inner corners. The preferred directions of calcite growth are attributed to local stresses and seepage flow associated with pore pressure gradients. Substantial framboidal pyrite in the sediments represents an early phase of microbially driven sulphate reduction, which may have induced calcite mineralization. The transition to brittle-style faulting was marked by development of deformation twins in CIC/BF fibres, and a transition to coarse, blocky calcite growth in relay arrays of steeply oriented microveins. This indicates local fault-related stresses substantially changed during shallow diagenesis and lithification, an evolution attributed to changing pore pressures, seepage forces and material moduli. Calcite mineralizations at Edgeøya track the very significant changes in mechanical properties and stress states that occur during synlithification deformation at very shallow crustal levels.

New Mexico Rock Glacier Inventory: Analysis Of Geomorphology And Paleogeography, Bryan Kinworthy
New Mexico Rock Glacier Inventory: Analysis Of Geomorphology And Paleogeography, Bryan Kinworthy
Geography ETDs
Rock glaciers are large masses of rock debris and interstitial ice that flow or have flowed downhill by permafrost creep. The formation and distribution of rock glaciers is restricted to climates conducive to permafrost development and lithology vulnerable to weathering for source rock. Subsurface ice is insulated from solar radiation, allowing rock glacier formation in lower latitudes and elevations than ice glaciers. Thus rock glaciers provide a useful geomorphic indicator of past and present climate change in regions absent of ice glaciers such as the U.S. Southwest. This study inventories 424 rock glaciers covering 18.36km2 in the state of New …

Dogging Darwin: America's Revolt Against The Teaching Of Evolution, Ruth C. Stern, J. Herbie Difonzo
Dogging Darwin: America's Revolt Against The Teaching Of Evolution, Ruth C. Stern, J. Herbie Difonzo
Northern Illinois University Law Review
More than four in ten Americans believe that God created humans in their present form 10,000 years ago. American antagonism toward the teaching of evolution is deeply rooted in fundamentalist tradition and an aversion to intellectualism. These forces have combined to demonize Charles Darwin to such an extent that sectarian-based legal and political attacks on evolution show no signs of abating. Darwin's day in court began in 1925 with the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. It continued into the 21st century with Kitzmiller v. Dover Area Schools. Throughout, the core creationist agenda has remained the same, although an evolution in labeling …

From Patient To Student Activation: Development Of The Student Activation Measure, Clinton J. Smith
From Patient To Student Activation: Development Of The Student Activation Measure, Clinton J. Smith
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The Patient Activation Measure (PAM) was constructed to measure a person’s knowledge, skill, and confidence for self-managing one’s healthcare, or “activation” (Hibbard, Stockard, Mahoney, & Tusler, 2004). The Student Activation Measure (SAM) extends this definition to secondary education. The SAM is a short, positively worded measure that is intended to guide intervention planning. Six hundred three students from two disparate high schools located in the Pacific Northwest completed the measure and an accompanying demographic questionnaire. The respective schools provided the students’ GPAs and attendance records. Using Rasch modeling, the SAM evidenced excellent reliability and construct validity. One-way ANOVAs with post …
Predicting Activation Of Experiments Inside The Annular Core Research Reactor, Joseph Greenberg
Predicting Activation Of Experiments Inside The Annular Core Research Reactor, Joseph Greenberg
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The objective of this thesis is to create a program to quickly estimate the radioactivity and decay of experiments conducted inside of the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR) at Sandia National Laboratories and eliminate the need for users to write code. This estimation is achieved by using MCNP to model the neutron fluxes in the reactors central cavity where experiments are conducted using one of the four possible neutron spectra available in the ACRR. The desired neutron spectrum, experiment material composition, and reactor power level are then input into CINDER2008 burnup code to obtain activation and decay information for every …

Hypersexual, Sexually Compulsive, Or Just Highly Sexually Active? Investigating Three Distinct Groups Of Gay And Bisexual Men And Their Profiles Of Hiv-Related Sexual Risk, Jeffrey T. Parsons, H. Jonathan Rendina, Ana Ventuneac, Raymond L. Moody, Christian Grov
Publications and Research
Emerging research supports the notion that sexual compulsivity (SC) and hypersexual disorder (HD) among gay and bisexual men (GBM) might be conceptualized as comprising three groups—Neither SC nor HD; SC only, and Both SC and HD—that capture distinct levels of severity across the SC/HD continuum. We examined data from 370 highly sexually active GBM to assess how the three groups compare across a range of risk factors for HIV infection. Comparisons focused on psychosexual measures—temptation for condomless anal sex (CAS), self-efficacy for avoiding CAS, sexual excitation and inhibition—as well as reports of actual sexual behavior. Nearly half (48.9%) of this …

© 2016 International Association of Sedimentologists. The Marinoan panglaciation (cα 650 to 635 Ma) is represented in north-east Svalbard by the 130 to 175 m thick Wilsonbreen Formation which contains syn-glacial carbonates in its upper 100 m. These sediments are now known to have been deposited under a CO2-rich atmosphere, late in the glaciation, and global climate models facilitate testing of proposed analogues. Precipitated carbonates occur in four of the seven facies associations identified: Fluvial Channel (including stromatolitic and intraclastic limestones in ephemeral stream deposits); Dolomitic Floodplain (dolomite-cemented sand and siltstones, and microbial dolomites); Calcareous Lake Margin (intraclastic dolomite and …

Lentic And Lotic Habitats As Templets For Fungal Communities: Traits, Adaptations, And Their Significance To Litter Decomposition Within Freshwater Ecosystems, Kevin A. Kuehn
Faculty Publications
Decomposition of plant matter is a key ecosystem process and considerable research has examined plant litter decay processes in freshwater habitats. Fungi are common inhabitants of the decomposer microbial community and representatives of all major fungal phyla have been identified within freshwater systems. Development and application of quantitative methods over the last several decades have firmly established that fungi are central players in the decomposition of plant litter in freshwaters and are important mediators of energy and nutrient transfer to higher trophic levels. Despite the critical roles that fungi play in carbon and nutrient cycling in freshwater ecosystems, there are …

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) produced by epithelial cells acts on dendritic cells (DCs) to drive differentiation of TH2-cells, and is therefore important in allergic disease pathogenesis. However, DCs themselves make significant amounts of TSLP in response to microbial products, but little is known about the key downstream signals that induce and modulate this TSLP secretion from human DCs. We show that human monocyte derived DC (mDC) secretion of TSLP in response to Candida albicans and β-glucans requires dectin-1, Syk, NF-κB, and p38 MAPK signaling. In addition, TSLP production by mDCs is greatly enhanced by IL-1β, but not TNF-α, in contrast …

A Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Model For The Antibiotic Ertapenem, Michele L. Joyner, Whitney Forbes, Michelle Maiden, Ariel N. Nikas
ETSU Faculty Works
Ertapenem is an antibiotic commonly used to treat a broad spectrum of infections, which is part of a broader class of antibiotics called carbapenem. Unlike other carbapenems, ertapenem has a longer half-life and thus only has to be administered once a day. A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was developed to investigate the uptake, distribution, and elimination of ertapenem following a single one gram dose. PBPK modeling incorporates known physiological parameters such as body weight, organ volumes, and blood ow rates in particular tissues. Furthermore, ertapenem is highly bound in human blood plasma; therefore, nonlinear binding is incorporated in the model …

Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is often employed in crop breeding programs to accelerate and enhance cultivar development, via selection during the juvenile phase and parental selection prior to crossing. Next-generation sequencing and its derivative technologies have been used for genome-wide molecular marker discovery. To bridge the gap between marker development and MAS implementation, this study developed a novel practical strategy with a semi-automated pipeline that incorporates traitassociated single nucleotide polymorphism marker discovery, low-cost genotyping through amplicon sequencing (AmpSeq) and decision making. The results document the development of a MAS package derived from genotyping-by-sequencing using three traits (flower sex, disease resistance and …

Korean Unification And The Future Of The U.S.-Rok Alliance, David F. Helvey
Strategic Forums
Security alliances can take many forms. They can be bilateral or multilateral, symmetric or asymmetric, highly institutionalized or largely unstructured. Regardless of form, security alliances as instruments of statecraft, at their most fundamental level, reflect a deliberate commitment among states to aggregate resources in the pursuit of common interests. For over 60 years, the U.S.–Republic of Korea (ROK) alliance has defended South Korea from external attack and, through the combined efforts of both countries, contributed to peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in Northeast Asia, across the Asia-Pacific, and beyond.

Trends In Private Land Conservation: Increasing Complexity, Shifting Conservation Purposes And Allowable Private Land Uses, Jessica Owley, Adena R. Rissman
Journal Articles
The terrain of private-land conservation dealmaking is shifting. As the number of acres of private land protected for conservation increases, our understanding of what it means for a property to be "conserved" is shifting. We examined 269 conservation easements and conducted 73 interviews with land conservation organizations to investigate changes in private-land conservation in the United States. We hypothesized that since 2000, conservation easements have become more complex but less restrictive. Our analysis reveals shifts in what it means for private land to be "conserved." We found that conservation easements have indeed become more complex, with more purposes and terms …

On the Ground
- The perception of prairie dogs among Native Americans living on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation is mixed. Some Native Americans focus on the loss of forage productivity, whereas others are interested in the cultural and ecological aspects of prairie dogs.
- The use of ecological sites may provide a mechanism for developing a management framework that would consider both livestock and prairie dogs.
- The three ecological sites we surveyed had large differences in off-colony standing crop, but in 2 of the 3 years we surveyed, there were no differences between standing crop on-colony.
- This suggests that management of …

Overexpression Of Cofactor Of Brca1 In Hepg2 Cells: A Step Towards Understanding The Role Of Cobra1 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Razan Jamil Masad
Theses and Dissertations
Cofactor of BRCA1 (COBRA1) is a BRCA-1 interacting protein that represents one of the four subunits of the negative elongation factor (NELF) complex. NELF is known by its ability to stall RNA Polymerase II during the early phase of transcription elongation, resulting in repressed transcription of several genes including ones associated with tumorigenesis of different cancer types. While it was found to be down-regulated in breast cancer, COBRA1 was found to be up-regulated in the upper gastrointestinal carcinoma. Up to date, the role of COBRA1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. We have previously demonstrated that silencing of COBRA1 in …

Scaffold proteins are known as important cellular regulators that can interact with multiple proteins to modulate diverse signal transduction pathways. RACK1 (Receptor for Activated C Kinase 1) is a WD-40 type scaffold protein, conserved in eukaryotes, from Chlamydymonas to plants and humans, plays regulatory roles in diverse signal transduction and stress response pathways. RACK1 in humans has been implicated in myriads of neuropathological diseases including Alzheimer and alcohol addictions. Model plant Arabidopsis thaliana genome maintains three different RACK1 genes termed RACK1A, RACK1B, and RACK1C with a very high (85-93%) sequence identity between them. Loss of function mutant in Arabidopsis indicates …

Center for Policy Research
This paper considers the generalized spatial panel data model with serial correlation proposed by Lee and Yu (2012) which encompasses a lot of the spatial panel data models considered in the literature, and derives the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) for that model. This in turn provides valuable BLUP for several spatial panel models as special cases.

Deciphering The Outer Envelope Of Thermotoga Maritima, Chaman Ranjit
Master's Theses
Thermotoga maritima is the representative member of the order Thermotogales, which is comprised of extremely thermophilic anaerobic bacteria. All members of this order are characterized by the presence of a unique outer envelope, the toga. The outer envelope appears as polar cellular distensions that sometimes are as large as the cytoplasm. The outer envelope increases in size while the cytoplasm remains the same leading to an outer envelope distension. The outer envelope distension development and increase in its size most likely occurs for storage of nutrients. Initial observations suggest that cells create larger distensions at the poles as they enter …

Assessing Marsh Response From Sea-Level Rise Applying Local Site Conditions: Humboldt Bay Wetlands, Usgs
State & Federal Reports and Publications
The broad goal of our research was to use site-specific data to develop local and regionally applicable models that inform management of tidal wetlands within Humboldt Bay. Our overarching question was: how vulnerable are Humboldt Bay tidal marshes to different rates of SLR. This question was addressed with three broad objectives: (1) Assess past patterns in sedimentation to inform current SLR projections. This was accomplished by radioisotope dating of stratigraphic cores. (2) Measure baseline conditions in the tidal marshes. We characterized physical and biological properties at all study sites including topography, accretion rates, emergent vegetation, water level, salinity, and water …
