Rab8 Directs Furrow Ingression And Membrane Addition During Epithelial Formation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lauren M. Mavor, Hui Miao, Zhongyuan Zuo, Ryan M. Holly, Yi Xie, Dinah Loerke, J Todd Blankenship
Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
One of the most fundamental changes in cell morphology is the ingression of a plasma membrane furrow. The Drosophila embryo undergoes several cycles of rapid furrow ingression during early development that culminate in the formation of an epithelial sheet. Previous studies have demonstrated the requirement for intracellular trafficking pathways in furrow ingression; however, the pathways that link compartmental behaviors with cortical furrow ingression events are unclear. Here, we show that Rab8 has striking dynamic behaviors in vivo. As furrows ingress, cytoplasmic Rab8 puncta are depleted and Rab8 accumulates at the plasma membrane in a location that coincides with known regions …

Proteins are involved in nearly every cellular process. They transport molecules, replicate DNA, catalyze reactions, respond to stimuli, and form the structural framework of the cell. The diversity of protein function has led to an interest in understanding the cellular production and control of individual proteins which in turn is key to understanding how the cell responds to the environment and what occurs on a molecular level during disease.
The Role Of Subtelomeric Silencing In Aging, Mark Roth, Jonathan Alder, Phd
The Role Of Subtelomeric Silencing In Aging, Mark Roth, Jonathan Alder, Phd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Telomeres, located at the ends of chromosomes, are repetitive DNA sequences composed of TTAGGG repeated thousands of times. Each time a cell copies its DNA a small amount of telomeric DNA is lost due to the end replication problem. Because of this, telomeres are eventually lost. New telomeres are synthesized by telomerase. Telomerase has both a protein reverse transcriptase component (TERT) and an RNA template (TERC) that it uses to synthesize new telomeres; however, expression is tightly controlled and is not expressed in most cells in our bodies. This limits the number of times that most of our cells can …
Solving The Structure Of The Raptor-Cct Complex, Grant Ludlam, Barry Willardson
Solving The Structure Of The Raptor-Cct Complex, Grant Ludlam, Barry Willardson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The protein Raptor is an essential component of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) cell signaling complex 1 (mTORC1) (1). The mTORC1 complex is a master regulator of cell growth, making it a high-priority target in cancer and inflammation research (2). Before Raptor can be assembled into the mTORC1, it is first folded by the chaperone protein cytosolic chaperonin containing TCP1 (CCT). CCT is composed of two rings of 8 different subunits, which together form a barrel shape. CCT substrates are folded in the 85 Å wide folding cavity inside the barrel.

Primary Combined Latissimus Dorsi And Serratus Anterior Flap Repair Of Right-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Agenesis In A Neonate, Madan Samuel, Rajiv Parapurath
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Large diaphragmatic defects can be repaired with latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior muscle flaps. We report the first successful primary repair of complete congenital diaphragmatic agenesis using a combination of autologous living bio-tissue and synthetic mesh in a neonate born in the NMC Specialty Hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in May 2014. Poor Apgar scores, a scaphoid abdomen and absent breath sounds over the right hemithorax were observed at birth. Chest and abdominal X-rays revealed a diaphragmatic hernia. The neonate was stabilised using high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide and sildenafil. The right diaphragm was reconstructed using combined latissimus dorsi …

PDIP46 (SKAR, POLDIP3) was discovered through its interaction with the p50 subunit of human DNA polymerase δ (Pol δ). Its functions in DNA replication are unknown. PDIP46 associates with Pol δ in cell extracts both by immunochemical and protein separation methods, as well as by ChIP analyses. PDIP46 also interacts with PCNA via multiple copies of a novel PCNA binding motif, the APIMs (AlkB homologue-2 PCNA-Interacting Motif). Sites for both p50 and PCNA binding were mapped to the N-terminal region containing the APIMs. Functional assays for the effects of PDIP46 on Pol δ activity on singly primed ssM13 DNA templates …

Cutaneous Scar Prevention And Management : Overview Of Current Therapies, Sultan Al-Shaqsi, Taimoor Al-Bulushi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Cutaneous scarring is common after trauma, surgery and infection and occurs when normal skin tissue is replaced by fibroblastic tissue during the healing process. The pathophysiology of scar formation is not yet fully understood, although the degree of tension across the wound edges and the speed of cell growth are believed to play central roles. Prevention of scars is essential and can be achieved by attention to surgical techniques and the use of measures to reduce cell growth. Grading and classifying scars is important to determine available treatment strategies. This article presents an overview of the current therapies available for …

Controlling The Structure And Dynamics Of Magnetoresponsive Particle Suspensions For Enhanced Transport Phenomena, Kyle J. Solis
Controlling The Structure And Dynamics Of Magnetoresponsive Particle Suspensions For Enhanced Transport Phenomena, Kyle J. Solis
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The work contained herein describes the use of various magnetic fields to control the structure and dynamics of magnetic particle suspensions, with the practical aim of enhancing momentum, heat, and mass transport. The magnetic fields are often multiaxial and can consist of up to three orthogonal components that may be either static (dc), time-dependent (ac), or some combination thereof. The magnetic particles are composed of a ferromagnetic material—such as iron, nickel, cobalt, or Permalloy—and can exist in a variety of shapes, including spheres, platelets, and rods. The shape of the particles is particularly important, as this can determine the type …

A Response To White, Erin Conner
A Response To White, Erin Conner
Speaker & Gavel
If someone were to have asked me in the spring of 2008 if I thought that I was providing an honest and reliable interpretation of my communication analysis model, I would have said yes. Several months removed from the speech community, my answer remains the same. This letter is my response to Dr. Leah White‘s criticisms of my interpretation of I Lose, Therefore I Think: A Search for Contemplation Amid Wars of Push-Button Glare by Shuen-shing Lee—the article that served as my communication analysis model (Conner, 2008). I hope that this letter provides a more in-depth justification of my interpretation. …

Distortion In The Description Of Scholarly Research Methods In Competitive Forensics, Leah White
Speaker & Gavel
Specifically, in this article I am concerned with our expectations regarding how students select and apply "methods" to their chosen topics. I argue that due to artificial expectations dictated by the unwritten rules of the event, students are not able to engage in accurate application of their selected scholarly articles. I will develop this argument by examining four communication analysis speeches presented in final rounds at the AFA-NIET to determine how accurately these students explain and represent their selected scholarship. I conclude the essay by offering suggestions for how we can encourage students to incorporate rhetorical theory into speeches in …

Superman And Wonder Woman: French Champions For Hiv/Aids Prevention Of Failed Aids Campaign?, Stephen M. Croucher, Terry L. Rentner
Speaker & Gavel
In 2004, the French government sponsored an AIDS/HIV prevention campaign; AIDES.ORG using photos of AIDS infected Superman and Wonder Woman to persuade adolescents to adopt preventative behaviors. This article asserts campaign organizers cancelled the campaign because it failed to provide audience efficacy and incorrectly manipulated fear in its campaign messages. Moreover, this article compares the AIDES.ORG campaign to other AIDS/HIV campaigns and argues effective health communication campaigns must provide efficacy to facilitate adoption of desired preventative behaviors. The Social Norms Approach is offered as an alternative method for developing effective health communication campaigns.
Predicting Anxiety Using Measures Of Negative Interpretation Bias In Clinically Anxious Youth: A Pilot Study, Jamie A. Mash
Predicting Anxiety Using Measures Of Negative Interpretation Bias In Clinically Anxious Youth: A Pilot Study, Jamie A. Mash
Open Access Theses
Negative interpretation bias is defined as an individual’s tendency to interpret ambiguous events in the environment as negative or threatening (Beard, 2011; Beard & Amir, 2009; Miers, Blote, Bogels, & Westenberg, 2008; Muris & Field, 2008; Rozenman, Amir, & Weersing, 2014). A heightened negative interpretation bias predicts high levels of trait anxiety and clinical levels of anxiety in adults and youth (Amin, Foa, & Coles, 1998; Amir, Prouvost, & Kuckertz, 2012; Muris & Field, 2008). Understanding the psychopathology of anxiety disorders through a lens of underlying information processing biases, including interpretation biases, can allow researchers to take a mechanistic approach …

Equilibrium Testing Of Rat Tail Tendon: An Analysis Of The Viscoelastic Properties Of Collagen Under Different Strain Points, Joshua C. Witt
Equilibrium Testing Of Rat Tail Tendon: An Analysis Of The Viscoelastic Properties Of Collagen Under Different Strain Points, Joshua C. Witt
Graduate Theses - Biology & Biomedical Engineering
Instantaneous tensile testing and stress-relaxation testing are forms of mechanical testing used to determine the elastic and viscoelastic properties of biological tissue. Equilibrium testing is a form of testing that combines both of these testing approaches at different strain points to determine the elastic properties of a material and also assess their viscoelastic properties in the same test. This testing method is commonly used on highly viscoelastic materials such as cartilage but has never been fully described in dense collagenous materials such as tendon or ligament. This analysis utilizes different strain points selected to capture the classic non-linear behavior of …
