Preliminary Results From A Computational Multi Agent Modelling Approach To Study Humpback Whale Song Cultural Transmission, M Mcloughlin, L Lamoni, E Garland, S Ingram, A Kirke, M Noad, L Rendell, Er Miranda
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) songs are a striking example of cultural transmission in non-humans (Garland et al., 2011). During the migration and mating season of this species, males produce complex, stereotyped sound sequences defined as ‘songs’(Payne & McVay, 1971). Within a population, males conform to a common yet slowly evolving song. Change can also occur more rapidly when a completely new song is adopted by the entire population in a relatively short time (termed ‘revolution’) (Noad, Cato, Bryden, Jenner, & Jenner, 2000). These phenomena can only occur if the whales are learning song from each other. While it is possible …
Errors In Surgical Pathology Reports: A Study From A Major Center In Pakistan, Zubair Ahmad, Romana Idrees, Nasir Uddin, Arsalan Ahmed, Saira Fatima
Errors In Surgical Pathology Reports: A Study From A Major Center In Pakistan, Zubair Ahmad, Romana Idrees, Nasir Uddin, Arsalan Ahmed, Saira Fatima
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background:
Errors in surgical pathology diagnosis can have serious consequences for the patient. Since the final product of a surgical pathology lab is the report, errors can be picked by reviewing reports of cases.AIM: To determine the frequency and types of error in surgical pathology reports of cases signed out in 2014 in a laboratory in Karachi, Pakistan.
Material and Methods:
All surgical pathology reports in which changes were made in the original report after sign out and an amended report was issued were included. Errors included: (1) misinterpretations; (2) missing critical information; (3) erroneous critical information; (4) misidentification; and …

Arboviral diseases are expanding worldwide, yet global surveillance is often limited due to diplomatic and cultural barriers between nations. With human encroachment into new habitats, mosquito-borne viruses are also invading new areas. The actual prevalence of expanding arboviruses is unknown in Pakistan due to inappropriate diagnosis and poor testing for arboviral diseases. The primary objective of this study was to document evidence of flavivirus infections as the cause of undifferentiated fever in Pakistan. Through a cooperative effort between the USA and Pakistan, patient exposure to dengue virus (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was examined in …

Central, Extraventricular And Atypical Neurocytomas: A Clinicopathologic Study Of 35 Cases From Pakistan Plus A Detailed Review Of The Published Literature, Zubair Ahmad, Nasir Ud Din, Aisha Memon, Mohammad Usman Tariq, Romana Idrees, Sheema Hasan
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background: Central neurocytomas are rare neuronal neoplasms with a favorable prognosis. They are typically located in the lateral ventricles of the brain and mostly histologically correspond to WHO grade II with a Mib 1 labelling index of 2 % and are designated as "atypical neurocytomas.AIM: The aim of our study was to describe the common as well as unusual morphologic features and the role of various immunohistochemical stains in the diagnosis of these rare tumors.MATERIALS AND Methods: We retrieved and reviewed 35 cases diagnosed between 2001 and 2015.Results: Sixty percent of patients were males, and the mean age was 26 …

A Model For The Application Of Target-Controlled Intravenous Infusion For A Prolonged Immersive Dmt Psychedelic Experience, Andrew R. Gallimore, Rick J. Strassman
Family and Community Medicine Research and Scholarship
The state of consciousness induced by N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is one of the most extraordinary of any naturally-occurring psychedelic substance. Users consistently report the complete replacement of normal subjective experience with a novel "alternate universe," often densely populated with a variety of strange objects and other highly complex visual content, including what appear to be sentient "beings." The phenomenology of the DMT state is of great interest to psychology and calls for rigorous academic enquiry. The extremely short duration of DMT effects-less than 20 min-militates against single dose administration as the ideal model for such enquiry. Using pharmacokinetic modeling and DMT …

The Free Blacks Of Virginia: A Personal Narrative, A Legal Construct, Sherri L. Burr
Faculty Scholarship
The existence of the Free Blacks of Virginia as a group in United States history would surprise most Americans. The common narrative is that all Africans were brought to this country as slaves with no rights, and systematically received legal privileges after the Civil War in the 1860s and the Civil Rights struggle a century later. The reality differs from this assumption. The first Africans who landed on the shores of Virginia in 1619 began their lives as indentured servants similar to many European immigrants. After finishing their terms of service, these Africans were accorded liberties such as the right …

Although the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S. is heartening for lesbians and gays, the resulting discriminatory legislative backlash against the LGBT population shows that this community continues to be marginalized and at risk. Over two hundred anti-LGBT bills have been introduced in state legislatures since January 2016. North Carolina recently passed anti-LGBT legislation that eliminated and prohibits LGBT anti-discrimination protections, and bars transgender individuals from using gender congruent public bathrooms. One result of recent and historical discrimination is LGBT individual's newfound and pre-existing fears of encountering anti-LGBT bias when seeking legal services, even as recent developments have …

The year 2014 marked the first opportunity for American taxpayers to receive subsidized health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s (“ACA”) new Premium Tax Credit (“PTC”). About 4.8 million people enrolled in an ACA plan in 2014 were eligible, and nearly 97% of these claimants were approved for advance payments of the PTC. The year 2015 marked the first tax return where taxpayers received the unpleasant surprise that they must repay excess credits due to reconciliation. Advance PTC estimates turned out to be highly inaccurate, with only 8% of claimants receiving accurate advance payments. A majority, 51%, had to repay …

This is the first volume of the Encyclopedia of Neutrosophic Researchers, edited from materials offered by the authors who responded to the editor’s invitation. The authors are listed alphabetically. The introduction contains a short history of neutrosophics, together with links to the main papers and books. Neutrosophic set, neutrosophic logic, neutrosophic probability, neutrosophic statistics, neutrosophic measure, neutrosophic precalculus, neutrosophic calculus and so on are gaining significant attention in solving many real life problems that involve uncertainty, impreciseness, vagueness, incompleteness, inconsistent, and indeterminacy. In the past years the fields of neutrosophics have been extended and applied in various fields, such as: …

Welcome into my scientific lab! My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). In this second book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, some of them already put at work, others …
