Fish Pain's Burden Of Proof, Carl Safina Feb 2016

Fish Pain's Burden Of Proof, Carl Safina

Animal Sentience

A hypothesis like Key’s, that fish cannot feel pain, should really be stated as a null hypothesis — an assumption that there is no difference in the things being compared. Then evidence — including anecdotal evidence — for and against rejecting the null hypothesis can be examined and weighed. Key (2016a) has proven only that fish lack mammalian brains.

Fire Was In The Reptile’S Mouth: Towards A Transcultural Ecological Poetics, Stuart Cooke Feb 2016

Fire Was In The Reptile’S Mouth: Towards A Transcultural Ecological Poetics, Stuart Cooke

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This paper compares two creation narratives from indigenous peoples on either side of the Pacific Ocean, the relationships between which catalyse the theorisation of a transcultural approach to ecological poetics. The comparison of these narratives reveals important, rhizomatic similarities, and also unmistakable regional differences, concerning the origins of language and culture in Yanomami (Venezuela) and MakMak (Australia) communities. Concomitant with the centrality of indigenous thought in this theorisation of ecopoetics is the decentrality of human-only conceptions of poetics. Accordingly, the paper considers non-semantic forms of poetics such as birdsong in order to de-centre classically Western, humanist conceptions of language …

What, If Anything, Are Hybrids: Enduring Truths And Challenges Associated With Population Structure And Gene Flow, Zachariah Gompert, C. Alex Buerkle

Biology Faculty Publications

Hybridization is a potent evolutionary process that can affect the origin, maintenance, and loss of biodiversity. Because of its ecological and evolutionary consequences, an understanding of hybridization is important for basic and applied sciences, including conservation biology and agriculture. Herein, we review and discuss ideas that are relevant to the recognition of hybrids and hybridization. We supplement this discussion with simulations. The ideas we present have a long history, particularly in botany, and clarifying them should have practical consequences for managing hybridization and gene flow in plants. One of our primary goals is to illustrate what we can and cannot …

Burden Of Proof Lies With Proposer Of Celestial Teapot Hypothesis, Brian Key Feb 2016

Burden Of Proof Lies With Proposer Of Celestial Teapot Hypothesis, Brian Key

Animal Sentience

Bertrand Russell famously imagined the existence of a celestial teapot to highlight that the burden of proof of a hypothesis lay with its proposer and it was not the responsibility of others to refute it. Those who propose that fish feel pain must bear the burden of proof for their hypothesis. There are several common arguments adopted by those defending the position that fish feel pain. For instance, proponents envisage that pain is so important for human survival that they can’t imagine fish could exist without it. Out of this argument from incredulity emerges the idea that pain must have …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is Evident In Lewis Lung Carcinoma-Induced Muscle Wasting, Conner Benson, David E. Lee, Nicholas P. Greene, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa, Tyrone A. Washington, Michael P. Wiggs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cancer cachexia is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with adverse prognosis and shortened survival. The defining feature of cachexia is extensive muscle atrophy leading to progressive functional impairments. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the rapid muscle wasting are not fully elucidated. Based on emerging evidence, we developed the hypothesis cachectic muscle wasting is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction increasing reactive oxygen species production leading to global oxidative stress. To test this hypothesis we utilized the well-established Lewis-Lung Carcinoma (LLC) model of cancer cachexia. The time-course study consisted of one, two, three and four week LLC tumor bearing mice and age-matched four week …

Treatment With Euk-134 Enhance Anabolic Akt/Mtor/P70s6kinase Pathways, Protecting Against Muscle Atrophy In The Rat Soleus In A 7 Day Hindlimb Unloading, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Jeff M. Hord, John M. Lawler Feb 2016

Treatment With Euk-134 Enhance Anabolic Akt/Mtor/P70s6kinase Pathways, Protecting Against Muscle Atrophy In The Rat Soleus In A 7 Day Hindlimb Unloading, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Jeff M. Hord, John M. Lawler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Muscle atrophy occurs with mechanical unloading, disease and aging. Mechanical unloading occurs with bedrest, microgravity, and casting/immobilization, all of which elicit the unloading-induced phenotype: (a) reduction of muscle fiber cross-section area (CSA) and (b) a shift from slow-twitch to fast-twitch muscle fibers. Unloading-induces muscle fiber atrophy appears to be a consequence of both decrease in contractile protein synthesis combined with increased protein catabolism. Oxidative stress has been cited as potential contributing factor to the unloading phenotype, although the mechanisms remain unresolved and controversial. We recently reported that a superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetic (EUK-134) reduced muscle atrophy, fiber-type shift, and pro-catabolic signaling. …

Mediation Of The Translocation Of Nnosμ During Unloading-Induced Atrophy Of Skeletal Muscle Via Nox2 Inhibition, Sarah E. Little, Jeffrey M. Hord, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Erika L. Garcia-Villatoro, Marcela M. Garcia, John M. Lawler Feb 2016

Mediation Of The Translocation Of Nnosμ During Unloading-Induced Atrophy Of Skeletal Muscle Via Nox2 Inhibition, Sarah E. Little, Jeffrey M. Hord, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Erika L. Garcia-Villatoro, Marcela M. Garcia, John M. Lawler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Mechanical unloading results in detachment of the mu-splice variant of neuronal nitric oxidase synthase (nNOSμ) from the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex and sarcolemma and translocation to the cytosol. We recently found that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a role in nNOSμ translocation during unloading and muscle atrophy. NOX2, an isoform of NADPH oxidase and source of ROS, may play a causal role in nNOSμ translocation. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of NOX2 peptidyl inhibition in reducing the translocation of nNOSμ from the sarcolemma and subsequently soleus CSA. Adult male Fisher 344 rats were randomly assigned to one …

Impact Of Implanted Shrapnel-Like Pellets On Bone Integrity In Rats After One And Three Months, Alexandra M. Slavinsky, Kalen Johnson Feb 2016

Impact Of Implanted Shrapnel-Like Pellets On Bone Integrity In Rats After One And Three Months, Alexandra M. Slavinsky, Kalen Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Depleted uranium (DU) and heavy metal tungsten alloys (HTMA), composed of tungsten, nickel, and either cobalt or iron, are used as kinetic energy penetrators in military applications. Due to this use, thousands of military service members experience shrapnel-related injuries. Since surgical removal could cause excessive tissue damage, these fragments are often left in place; however, the long-term health implications of leaving these fragments in the warfighter’s body is poorly understood. Preliminary evidence has shown bone tissue is a primary reservoir for storage of uranium, where it takes the place of calcium in the bone mineral matrix. The purpose of this …

Beyond Sclerostin: Influence Of Disuse And Recovery From Disuse On Mechanosensitive Osteocyte Proteins, Corinne Metzger Feb 2016

Beyond Sclerostin: Influence Of Disuse And Recovery From Disuse On Mechanosensitive Osteocyte Proteins, Corinne Metzger

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Osteocytes, mechanosensitive cells embedded in bone tissue, release proteins responsive to mechanical stimuli that signal osteoblasts and alter bone formation. Sclerostin (Scl), an inhibitor of the Wnt signaling pathway, is upregulated in disuse which inhibits bone formation. Osteocyte insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are both implicated to increase with mechanical or shear stress enhancing osteoblast function. PURPOSE: To determine osteocyte protein levels of sclerostin, IGF-I, and IL-6 in disuse and after recovery from disuse. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats (6-mo old) were hindlimb unloaded (HU) to simulate disuse or allowed normal cage activity (CA) for 28 days (28d). …

Impact Of Anti-Resorptive Treatment On Recovery Of Bone After Disuse, Michael J. Junior, Corinne Metzger, Scott E. Lenfest, Ramon Boudreaux, Harry A. Hogan, Susan Bloomfield Feb 2016

Impact Of Anti-Resorptive Treatment On Recovery Of Bone After Disuse, Michael J. Junior, Corinne Metzger, Scott E. Lenfest, Ramon Boudreaux, Harry A. Hogan, Susan Bloomfield

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Bisphosphonates (BP), drugs that inhibit bone resorption, are used to minimize bone loss in long-duration spaceflight, extended bed rest, and acute spinal cord injury; however, the long term impact of BP use on recovery of bone after disuse is not well understood. This experiment tests the hypothesis that the BP zoledronic acid (ZOL) administered 7 days before hindlimb unloading (HU) will protect against loss of bone mass during 28 days of HU by suppressing bone resorption activity while also diminishing the ability of cancellous bone formation rate (BFR) to recover following HU. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 mo) were assigned …

Cognitive Complexity In Carnivora: The Evolutionary Link Between Social Complexity And Cognitive Complexity, Natalia D. Borrego Feb 2016

Cognitive Complexity In Carnivora: The Evolutionary Link Between Social Complexity And Cognitive Complexity, Natalia D. Borrego

Open Access Dissertations

Traditional views of cognitive evolution favored a simplistic approach in which the evolution of advanced cognition was considered unique to primate lineages. A recent expansion to non-primates indicates that cognition convergently evolved in several lineages. The social intelligence hypothesis attributes the convergent evolution of cognitive complexity to shared selective pressures imposed by social complexity. According to the social intelligence hypothesis, social individuals benefit from cognitive abilities facilitating social life, and the resultant fitness advantage engenders an evolutionary link, whereby social complexity selectively favors cognitive complexity. The social intelligence hypothesis predicts that social species are cognitively advanced. Although several studies support …

Dnah6 And Its Interactions With Pcd Genes In Heterotaxy And Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, Stephen M. King Feb 2016

Dnah6 And Its Interactions With Pcd Genes In Heterotaxy And Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, Stephen M. King

UCHC Articles - Research

Heterotaxy, a birth defect involving left-right patterning defects, and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a sinopulmonary disease with dyskinetic/immotile cilia in the airway are seemingly disparate diseases. However, they have an overlapping genetic etiology involving mutations in cilia genes, a reflection of the common requirement for motile cilia in left-right patterning and airway clearance. While PCD is a monogenic recessive disorder, heterotaxy has a more complex, largely non-monogenic etiology. In this study, we show mutations in the novel dynein gene DNAH6 can cause heterotaxy and ciliary dysfunction similar to PCD. We provide the first evidence that trans-heterozygous interactions between DNAH6 and …

Associations Between Domestic-Dog Morphology And Behaviour Scores In The Dog Mentality Assessment, Holly R. Stone, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Melissa J. Starling, Bjorn Forkman Feb 2016

Associations Between Domestic-Dog Morphology And Behaviour Scores In The Dog Mentality Assessment, Holly R. Stone, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Melissa J. Starling, Bjorn Forkman

Morphology Collection

The domestic dog shows a wide range of morphologies, that humans have selected for in the process of creating unique breeds. Recent studies have revealed correlations between changes in morphology and behaviour as reported by owners. For example, as height and weight decrease, many undesirable behaviours (non-social fear, hyperactivity and attention seeking) become more apparent. The current study aimed to explore more of these correlations, but this time used reports from trained observers. Phenotypic measurements were recorded from a range of common dog breeds (n = 45) and included cephalic index (CI: the ratio of skull width to skull length), …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Feedstocks for industrial applications ranging from polymers to lubricants are largely derived from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Vegetable oils with fatty acid structures and storage forms tailored for specific industrial uses offer renewable and potentially sustainable sources of petrochemical-type functionalities. A wide array of industrial vegetable oils can be generated through biotechnology, but will likely require non-commodity oilseed platforms dedicated to specialty oil production for commercial acceptance. Here we show the feasibility of three Brassicaceae oilseeds crambe, camelina, and carinata, none of which are widely cultivated for food use, as hosts for complex metabolic engineering of wax esters for lubricant …
