Modulating The Release Of Therapeutic Agents From Plga Coated Cancellous Allografts, Seth Malinowski May 2016

Modulating The Release Of Therapeutic Agents From Plga Coated Cancellous Allografts, Seth Malinowski

Master's Theses

Bone grafts are used in 2 million annual surgeries with that statistic expected to rise due to the increasing elderly population as well as sports related injuries. At a certain size bone fracture or defect, the body is unable to heal spontaneously, and a bone graft must be implanted into the defect site. Allografts are used as bone grafts due to their availability and elimination of donor site morbidity, however they show poor bioactivity and bone regeneration. This study utilizes a degradable poly(lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymer coating applied to cancellous allografts, loaded with a variety of therapeutic agents aimed to improve …

Biopsychosocial Factors Of Resilience In The Medically Indigent Adult Population, Kaitlin E. Puckett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The medically indigent adult population continues to struggle with the effects of not having insurance coverage, despite the efforts of the Affordable Care Act to provide more affordable healthcare coverage to the population. Based on the United States Census Bureau’s reported population in 2015, an estimated 45 million Americans are without insurance. This study aims to identify and explore the impacts of the biopsychosocial factors of resilience that enable the population to face adversity, stress, and manage distress in the face of trauma (Masten, Best, & Garmezy, 1990; Rutter, 2006; Zimmerman, 2015). Four hypotheses follow a review of literature and …

Examination Of Silica Sol-Gels And Aerogels Containing Silver Nanoparticles And 4-Mercaptobenzoic Acid Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Tanner Corrado, Elizabeth J.O. Atkinson, Brian D. Gilbert

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Sol-gels and aero-gels containing silver nanoparticles have been investigated for use as substrates in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). 4-Mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) was chosen as the target molecule in this study, as it has been well-characterized using SERS. The orientation of the 4-MBA at different coverages in gels, and at differing concentrations of silver colloid, has not been well studied. For both base and acid-catalyzed sol-gels, xerogels, and aerogels, the concentration of 4-MBA was varied with a constant silver colloid concentration in the silica gels and the effects were measured with SERS. The effect of varying silver colloid concentration against a …

Modeling The Behavior Of The Surface To Liquid Interfaces In An Electrolytic Liquid, Caitlin M. Duffner, Daniel C. Miller Ii, Michael S. Crosser

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Understanding the mechanism for charge transfer between electrodes within an electrolyte dissolved in water is vital to better understanding the sources of electrical noise in the system. This research compares the electrical properties of liquid top gated graphene devices with the properties of two metal probes to model the system. By measuring the impedance of these systems at different frequencies, it is possible to develop a model of their electrical properties and to consider techniques to improve signal to noise at graphene interfaces.

How Changes In Plant Community Structure Affect Terrestrial Invertebrate Food Webs, Chadwick V. Tillberg, Sarah Rasmussen-Rehkopf, Kiera Thurman, Renee Lafountain, Cheryl Schultz

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

We investigated how change in plant community composition and vegetative structure brought about by annual grass-specific herbicide application affects terrestrial arthropod communities, with special emphasis on the potential mutualists and predators of the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly, Plebejus icarioides fenderi (Family: Lycaenidae). Larvae of this species form facultative protective mutualisms with ants, and they may be preyed upon by numerous invertebrate predators. We used pitfall trapping to compare terrestrial invertebrate community structure between control and herbicide-treated plots through time. The extent to which major changes in plant community composition affect the rest of the invertebrate community may have relevance for …

Looking For A (Super)Resolution To An Image Processing Problem, Alleta Maier May 2016

Looking For A (Super)Resolution To An Image Processing Problem, Alleta Maier

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

In recent years sparse coding has been employed to efficiently process images. Since recovering sharp images from images corrupted with noise is a well-known ill-posed problem, small perturbations in the image lead to large deviations in the reconstructed image. We look to combine research in superresolution with that of sparse coding for elucidation.

Complexity And Fly Swarms, Grant Cates, Joelle Murray May 2016

Complexity And Fly Swarms, Grant Cates, Joelle Murray

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Complexity is the study of phenomena that emerge from a collection of interacting objects and arises in many systems throughout physics, biology, finance, economics and more. Certain kinds of complex systems can be described by self-organized criticality (SOC). An SOC system is one that is internally driven towards some critical state. Recent experimental work suggests scaling behavior of fly swarms is one of the hallmarks of an SOC system. Our goal is to look for SOC behavior in computational models of fly swarms.

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman May 2016

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman

Andrews Research Conference

In this essay, I examine how Joan Slonczewski’s 1986 feminist science fiction novel A Door into Ocean outlines a practical program of nonviolent resistance to oppression. Unlike many dystopian and utopian novels, which provide social commentary and offer up ideals but not practical solutions, A Door into Ocean depicts the citizens of a peaceful alien nation, Shora, using various practical tactics of resistance against invading Valan forces that can be applied to contemporary protest and political action. I begin my study by examining the threefold influences on the Shoran’s philosophy of resistance: postcolonial resistance, ecofeminism, and Quaker theology. I then …

Role Of The Dead-Box Protein Mrh4 In Mitochondrial Ribosome Biogenesis, Dasmanthie De Silva May 2016

Role Of The Dead-Box Protein Mrh4 In Mitochondrial Ribosome Biogenesis, Dasmanthie De Silva

Open Access Dissertations

Mitoribosomes are macromachines modified from their ancestral bacterial ribosomes to specialize in the synthesis of a handful of hydrophobic proteins, essential for the biogenesis of the oxidative phosphorylation system. We have identified a conserved DEAD-box RNA helicase Mrh4 and a GTPase Mtg1 as essential mitoribosome 54S LSU assembly factors in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Null mutants of mrh4 or mtg1 accumulate 54S assembly intermediates. The Δmrh4 mitoribosome intermediate is missing in uL9, uL16 and bL33 ribosome proteins and the assembly factor Mtg1 is not bound to it; while the mitoribosome intermediate in Δmtg1 contain Mrh4 but uL16 is highly underrepresented. We show …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The non-target impacts of two reduced risk insecticides, chlorantraniliprole and spinetoram, were evaluated for two years in Oregon pear and California walnut orchards. Experiments were conducted in large replicated plots (approximately 0.25–0.4ha) to assess the impact of these two insecticides on natural enemies of secondary pests when applied against codling moth, Cydia pomonella. Cumulative insect days (CID) of secondary pests and natural enemies were calculated from leaf samples, plant volatile traps, beat trays or cardboard trunk bands. Ratios of natural enemies and prey were also calculated. Results from these field studies demonstrate that applications of chlorantraniliprole can reduce abundance of …

Temperature Variability And Multiple Environmental Stressors: How Will Tadpole Performance Change With Our Climate?, Diana C. Macklem, Tracy A. G. Rittenhouse, Ashley M. Helton, Jason H. O'Connor, Jaron T. Kolek

University Scholar Projects

This project seeks to analyze how predicted changes in climate and its interactions with other environmental factors will influence tadpole growth and development. Our first study examined how the frequency and magnitude of temperature variability affect wood frog and gray tree frog tadpole performance. We found that performance responses to repeatedly fluctuating treatments did not differ significantly from constant temperatures held at the same mean for wood frog tadpoles. However, elevated mean temperatures of 26 degrees Celsius caused tadpoles to metamorphose early, suggesting a potential developmental threshold. We found that gray tree frog performance was affected by fluctuating temperature treatments, …
