The Impact Of Critical Literacy On The Moral Reasoning Of Adolescents, Sierra Mae Gilbertson
The Impact Of Critical Literacy On The Moral Reasoning Of Adolescents, Sierra Mae Gilbertson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this study was, in what ways does the implementation of critical literacy impact the moral reasoning of adolescents? It documents one teacher’s use of action research to create a unit that integrated critical literacy methods based on the research of McLaughlin & DeVoogd with moral education methods based on research by Kohlberg. The author documents details of the unit and uses related research literature to construct meaning and validate the study. She describes the effectiveness of each critical literacy activity in terms of the impact it had on the moral reasoning of her students and …

The Spliceosomal Protein Sf3b5 Is A Novel Component Of Drosophila Saga That Functions In Gene Expression Independent Of Splicing, Rachel Stegeman, Peyton J. Spreacker, Selene K. Swanson, Robert Stephenson, Laurence Florens, Michael P. Washburn, Vikki M. Weake
Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The interaction between splicing factors and the transcriptional machinery provides an intriguing link between the coupled processes of transcription and splicing. Here, we show that the two components of the SF3B complex, SF3B3 and SF3B5, that form part of the U2 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle (snRNP) are also subunits of the Spt-Ada-Gcn5 acetyltransferase (SAGA) transcriptional coactivator complex in Drosophila melanogaster. Whereas SF3B3 had previously been identified as a human SAGA subunit, SF3B5 had not been identified as a component of SAGA in any species. We show that SF3B3 and SF3B5 bind to SAGA independent of RNA and interact with …

Educating Spouses May Be Key To Helping Veterans, Shawn J. Gourley
Educating Spouses May Be Key To Helping Veterans, Shawn J. Gourley
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Veterans’ and family members are facing great difficulties when the veteran returns home to transition into civilian life. Marriages are struggling, and families are being torn apart when the veteran returns home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although there are many programs that have been created to educate spouses about PTSD, however, they often fall short of being able to prepare a family for the actual experience of transition. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is starting to come up with programs to help couples and research is starting to gain empirical support; there are still many couples left …

Preliminary Insights Into Prehistoric Toolstone Preference Of Two Igneous Materials In The Tanana River Drainage, Interior Alaska, Brooks A. Lawler
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This project examines prehistoric human mobility and raw material preference for tool manufacture in a 45,918 square mile portion of Interior Alaska, the Tanana River Drainage. A geographic approach is used to investigate the distribution of prehistoric obsidian and rhyolitic artifacts in relation to the sources of these materials. The objective of the investigation is to reveal spatial patterning in the distributions of artifacts made of these two materials, relative to each other and relative to the cost of obtaining these raw materials from their sources on the landscape. I examine a hypothesis based in human behavioral ecology and optimal …
Investigating The Use Of Chloroquine As Antineoplastic Therapy, Catherine E. Herron, Alexandra E. Mason
Investigating The Use Of Chloroquine As Antineoplastic Therapy, Catherine E. Herron, Alexandra E. Mason
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Chloroquine (CQ) is an oral lysosomotropic agent routinely used as an anti-malarial drug (Espina & Liotta, 2013). In recent years, it has been discovered that CQ also possesses anticancer effects, potentially due to the drug’s inhibition of autophagy (Kimura, Takabatake, Takahashi, & Isaka, 2012). Autophagy is a normal cellular pathway that allows for the degradation of cytoplasmic contents. In cancer cells autophagy can also serve as a pro-survival pathway under stressful metabolic conditions, ultimately promoting the survival of malignant cells (Sui et al., 2013). Therefore, in recent years CQ has been speculated as a potential antineoplastic therapy. When administered in …
Seeing The Forests For The Trees: A Comparative Study Of The Green Belt And Chipko Movements, Claire E. Elverum
Seeing The Forests For The Trees: A Comparative Study Of The Green Belt And Chipko Movements, Claire E. Elverum
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The Green Belt Movement (GBM) in Kenya and the Chipko movement in India are two examples of social movements that support the ecofeminist ideology. Both of these environmental movements began under similar circumstances at around the same time, but they are now very different. While the GBM broadened its focus beyond planting trees and gained widespread international attention, the Chipko movement maintained its central focus on protecting trees and remained relatively decentralized and informal. This paper uses these two social movements to explore which factors most influence social movement success and international reach.

Examination Of Cue-Induced Nicotine Withdrawal Among Humans, Kathleen R. Owens
Examination Of Cue-Induced Nicotine Withdrawal Among Humans, Kathleen R. Owens
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
There is copious research investigating the effect of environmental cues on the maintenance of drug behavior in animals, but sparse data exist with regard to humans. In our study, we examined 6 dependent cigarette smokers from James Madison University. We paid participants to use novel lighters that served as audible/tactile cues. After 2 weeks, participants returned to the lab satiated with nicotine for their testing session in which they were presented with the same cue and immediately completed a multiple-choice procedure (MCP) that measured their preferences by offering choices regarding money or the ability to take a cigarette break. Results …
The Expansion Of The Training Of The Hospital Emergency Response Team At Sentara Rockingham Memorial With The Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Allison E. Mayzel
The Expansion Of The Training Of The Hospital Emergency Response Team At Sentara Rockingham Memorial With The Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Allison E. Mayzel
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Major emergency incidents occur without any notice and can cause extreme disorder and confusion. The hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Sentara Rockingham Memorial, has created a Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT) that will be prepared to respond to major incidents in order to create an Emergency Treatment Area that will triage, decontaminate, and transport patients. An agency that operates closely with the HERT is Harrisonburg Rescue Squad. The Rescue Squad is the first response to the scene of disasters, therefore it is important for them to be prepared for any emergency situation. In order to create uniformity between the Rescue Squad …
The Role Of Intrinsic Foot Muscles In Three Running Footwear Conditions, Brian T. Groener
The Role Of Intrinsic Foot Muscles In Three Running Footwear Conditions, Brian T. Groener
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Running has grown tremendously in popularity and so has running with minimalist shoes. Injuries such as plantar fasciitis (pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot) are prevalent in runners despite efforts to design footwear to alleviate the impact of running and to reduce the number of injuries. In the past decade, minimalist running shoes have received considerable attention, causing debate amongst runners and scientists as to their utility in injury prevention. While running barefoot or in minimalist shoes reduces initial impact forces, the claim that they lower injury rates remains …
No Soy De Aquí, Ni Soy De Allá: How Stateless Individuals In The Dominican Republic Construct National Identity, Lindsay Wright
No Soy De Aquí, Ni Soy De Allá: How Stateless Individuals In The Dominican Republic Construct National Identity, Lindsay Wright
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Resolution 12, a piece of national legislation in the Dominican Republic, retroactively revokes citizenship from individuals whose ancestors came to the country illegally. The resolution was proposed in 2007, signed into law in 2008, and ratified in 2013, rendering a large number of Dominican-born individuals stateless. Using the framework of Communication Theory of Identity (CTI), the researcher analyzed the communication processes and cultural elements stateless individuals utilize to form their national identity. The researcher used a qualitative approach to gather data, which were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Responses from the participants, provided through in-depth individual interviews, indicate that …
Effects Of Agricultural Restoration Practices On Stream Health In The Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, Erin L. Thady
Effects Of Agricultural Restoration Practices On Stream Health In The Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, Erin L. Thady
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The Shenandoah Valley encompasses some of the highest agricultural producing regions in Virginia, many of which are large contributors of nutrients and sediment. The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) assists landowners in the installation of riparian restoration projects in which cattle are fenced out or a riparian buffer is planted. We examined the temporal effects of riparian restoration and the impact of upstream landuse on water quality for eleven farms participating in the CREP program for various times (from 1 to 14 years). We hypothesized that the length of time that the CREP program has been established would have a …

Embryonic And Post-Embryonic Hoxa13 Expression In The Four-Toed Salamander, Hemidactylium Scutatum., Breanna R. Lee
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The process of somitogenesis occurs during embryological development and results in the definition of persisting axial segments. The four toed salamander, Hemidactylium scutatum, exhibits post-embryonic segmentation while most other vertebrates stop segmentation at the end of embryological development. HoxA13, a transcription factor expressed along the developing anteroposterior axis, plays a role in specifying caudal segmental identity, cell ingression into the pre-somitic mesoderm (PSM), and PSM truncation. HoxA13’s responsibilities in influencing embryological development make it an interesting candidate for involvement in post-embryonic segment addition mechanisms. This study explores the role of HoxA13 in tail segmentation in H. scutatum embryonic, larval, …

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Response During Endurance Cycle Training: Impact Of Carbohydrate And Protein Supplementation, Jordan L. Parker
Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Response During Endurance Cycle Training: Impact Of Carbohydrate And Protein Supplementation, Jordan L. Parker
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Purpose: Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is part of the superfamily of neurotrophins including: nerve growth factor (NGF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4). Recent evidence suggests that aerobic activity can increase BDNF levels both during and following exercise. Likewise, dietary habits have been shown to alter BDNF levels. However, nothing is known about the effect of BDNF levels during aerobic activity under specific dietary interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of specific macronutrient supplementation on BDNF levels during aerobic exercise. Methods: We had the opportunity to determine BDNF levels in blood samples obtained from two …

Nonlinear Dynamics Of Filaments In Free Space And Fluids, Victoria Kelley
Nonlinear Dynamics Of Filaments In Free Space And Fluids, Victoria Kelley
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The purpose of this paper is to study a straight rod, held at both ends, with a known twist and tension or compression. We study the stability of this steady state when the system is dominated either by inertia or drag. In order to do this, we first replicate the work of Goriely and Tabor to look at the case with inertia, without drag. After conducting the analysis for that case, we then apply their framework to perform a linear stability analysis of a model that is without inertia, but with hydrodynamic drag. Our motivation is the study of locomotion …
Reflection: Effect Of Age On Auditory Brainstem Responses In Mice With Epha4 Mutations, Erica L. Hoogerland
Reflection: Effect Of Age On Auditory Brainstem Responses In Mice With Epha4 Mutations, Erica L. Hoogerland
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss is a condition that affects approximately 40% of the population over 65 years of age (Gates & Mills, 2005). Studying the effects of EphA4 mutations (wild type, heterozygous, and homozygous) mice is fundamental in understanding the relationship between onset of age-related hearing loss, in both the mammalian population and the human population. In order to further understanding of age-related hearing loss, the researchers evaluated thirty-six mice in a preliminary study from two months to nine months of age. Following data analysis, the researchers confirmed the results by continuing a second round of testing. The hearing …
Compost Land Management And Soil Carbon Sequestration, Kylene A. Hohman
Compost Land Management And Soil Carbon Sequestration, Kylene A. Hohman
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Extensive fossil fuel burning has released carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Under proper ecological conditions plants convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into stable soil organic matter, a natural and efficient means of mitigating climate change. In the symbiotic relationship between mycorrhizae and plants, mycorrhizae provide plants with essential nutrients in exchange for carbon sugars leaked from the plants. Mycorrhizae convert carbon sugars to an exudate called glomalin, a protein that assists in developing soil aggregates composed of sand, silt, and clay. These aggregates, called humus, store carbon for hundreds of years under healthy ecological conditions. Compost prompts soil microbes to aerobically …
Sickness Of The Soul: Language Mediated Understandings Of Depression Across Cultures, Elyssa M. Fogleman
Sickness Of The Soul: Language Mediated Understandings Of Depression Across Cultures, Elyssa M. Fogleman
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Through the use of word association tasks and semi-structured interviews, the present study gathered information on the current dominant understandings of “depression” in America and “yuutsu” and “utsubyou” in Japan. The results were compared to the findings of a similar study that was conducted in the mid 1970s that aimed to find connections between language and the subjective experience of depression. In comparing the responses from the 1970s and the present, it was found that the dominant understanding of depression has been subject to change. These changes can be attributed to larger shifts in the sociopolitical climate, the proliferation of …
