Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Previous studies have demonstrated that excessive reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS)‑induced apoptosis is an important feature of the injury to the lung epithelium in paraquat (PQ) poisoning. However the precise mechanisms of PQ‑induced dysfunction of the mitochondria, where ROS/RNS are predominantly produced, remain to be fully elucidated. Whether globular adiponectin (gAd), a potent molecule protective to mitochondria, regulates the mitochondrial function of alveolar type II cells to reduce PQ‑induced ROS/RNS production remains to be investigated. The current study aimed to investigate the precise mechanisms of PQ poisoning in the mitochondria of alveolar type II cells, and to elucidate the role of …

Regeneration: An Overlooked Aspect Of Trait-Based Plant Community Assembly Models, Julie Larson, Jennifer L. Funk
Regeneration: An Overlooked Aspect Of Trait-Based Plant Community Assembly Models, Julie Larson, Jennifer L. Funk
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Despite the disproportionate influence that propagule production, dispersal, seed to seedling recruitment, and vegetative reproduction can have on plant population and community dynamics, progress has been slow in the directed collection of regeneration traits to inform community assembly outcomes.
While seed mass is globally available and linked to growth and reproductive output, there are limits to its explanatory ability. In this essay, we call for expanded efforts to integrate a more diverse set of regeneration traits into community assembly models.
First, we extend an existing community assembly framework to conceptualize regeneration as a series of transitional processes whose outcomes are …

Changes In The Adult Glun2b Associated Proteome Following Adolescent Intermittent Ethanol Exposure, H. Scott Swartzwelder, Mary-Louise Risher, Kelsey M. Miller, Roger J. Colban, Danner G. Winder, Tiffany A. Wills
Biomedical Sciences
Adolescent alcohol use is the strongest predictor for alcohol use disorders. In rodents, adolescents have distinct responses to acute ethanol, and prolonged alcohol exposure during adolescence can maintain these phenotypes into adulthood. One brain region that is particularly sensitive to the effects of both acute and chronic ethanol exposure is the hippocampus. Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure (AIE) produces long lasting changes in hippocampal synaptic plasticity and dendritic morphology, as well as in the susceptibility to acute ethanol-induced spatial memory impairment. Given the pattern of changes in hippocampal structure and function, one potential target for these effects is the ethanol sensitive …

The Illness-Disease Dynamic: Psychological Wellbeing In Type 2 Diabetes: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Claire Mckenzie, Kristina Bennert, David Kessler, Alan Montgomery
The Qualitative Report
Distress and depression often go unrecognised in people with diabetes. In this article, I present an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the lived experience of people with Type 2 diabetes, based on individual in-depth interviews with 10 patients. The purpose of this research was to gain a deeper understanding of these psychological symptoms through a detailed examination of how patients interpret and respond to their experience of the condition. I propose a revised model for the connection between the disease of diabetes and patients’ lived experiences of illness, as one of embodied coexistence rather than relation. Through my analysis, I …

The Structure And Regulation Of Cullin 2 Based E3 Ubiquitin Ligases And Their Biological Functions., Weijia Cai, Haifeng Yang
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes play a central role in targeting cellular proteins for ubiquitination-dependent protein turnover through 26S proteasome. Cullin-2 is a member of the Cullin family, and it serves as a scaffold protein for Elongin B and C, Rbx1 and various substrate recognition receptors to form E3 ubiquitin ligases.
MAIN BODY OF THE ABSTRACT: First, the composition, structure and the regulation of Cullin-2 based E3 ubiquitin ligases were introduced. Then the targets, the biological functions of complexes that use VHL, Lrr-1, Fem1b, Prame, Zyg-11, BAF250, Rack1 as substrate targeting subunits were described, and their involvement in diseases …

We have recently demonstrated a critical role for progranulin in bladder cancer. Progranulin contributes, as an autocrine growth factor, to the transformed phenotype by modulating Akt-and MAPK-driven motility, invasion and anchorage-independent growth. Progranulin also induces F-actin remodeling by interacting with the F-actin binding protein drebrin. In addition, progranulin is overexpressed in invasive bladder cancer compared to normal tissue controls, suggesting that progranulin might play a key role in driving the transition to the invasive phenotype of urothelial cancer. However, it is not established whether targeting progranulin could have therapeutic effects on bladder cancer. In this study, we stably depleted urothelial …

Background: Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is caused by several species of trypanosomes including Trypanosoma congolense, T. vivax, T. godfreyi, T. simiae and T. brucei. Two of the subspecies of T. brucei also cause Human African Trypanosomiasis. Although some of them can be mechanically transmitted by biting flies; these trypanosomes are all transmitted by tsetse flies which are the cyclical vectors of Trypanosoma congolense, T. godfreyi, T. simiae and T. brucei. We present here the first report assessing the prevalence of trypanosomes in tsetse flies in Nigeria using molecular tools. Methods: 488 tsetse flies of three species, Glossina palpalis palpalis, G. …

Drivers Of Hotel Employee Motivation, Satisfaction And Engagement In Riyadh, The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz Alqusayer
Theses
A large and growing body of literature has investigated job satisfaction among hotel employees. However, far too little attention has been paid to the level of job satisfaction among hotel employees in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This research obtained data which may help to address this research gap. The research therefore explored and provided a review of the literature on job satisfaction, motivational factors, and engagement among hotel employees. Specifically, the research investigated the motivational factors, level of job satisfaction and engagement among hotel employees in Riyadh. The research employed a quantitative approach in the form of a survey, …

Transcriptomic Profiling Of The Extremophile Eutrema Salsugineum Response To Environmental Stressors, Diana Abou El Hassan
Theses and Dissertations
Plants are sessile organisms that are constantly exposed to a variety of abiotic and biotic environmental stresses. Some plants are known to be more tolerant to those environmental stressors than others; those are the extremophilic plants. Studying the stress response pathways in such plants is extremely important in developing transgenic crop plants with enhanced tolerance to environmental stresses. Eutrema salsugineum is an extremophilic plant that is known to be resistant to many abiotic stress factors such as drought, cold, salt, and nitrogen deficiency. Experiments were carried out in KAUST by exposing the extremophilic plant to heat stress and exogenous ABA …

Towards A Regional Governance Of The Nuclear Fuel Cycle In The Middle East, Yomna Ismail Ahmed
Capstone and Graduation Projects
This purpose of this project is to explore the possibilities and opportunities of regional governance regime for the nuclear fuel cycle in the Middle East. This study argues that a cooperative, regional framework in accordance to international criteria is the ideal solution to the technical, economic, and political challenges confronting the generation of nuclear power generation in the region. The project begins by discussing various existing frameworks for managing the nuclear full cycle, and how they could be applied to the nuclear energy situation in the region. The paper then examines the different obstacles to establishing such a framework in …

To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner
To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner
Marian Studies
In this essay, the author initiates a discussion about key ways in which the theology behind and practice of Marian consecration as developed by St. Louis de Montfort both refutes the errors of and fulfills the longing indicated by the emergence of strong gnostic currents in contemporary thought. To accommodate the parameters of this project, discussion is limited to three categories of “new Gnosticisms”—political, New Age, and technological—and key theological concepts.
The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
Marian Studies
The biblical emphasis of Vatican II and later developments, such as the address of Pope Benedict XVI to the Marian Congress of 2012 about studying the Blessed Mother from many different perspectives, have led mariologists to a new appreciation for a determined biblical-anthropological approach. This approach has great significance for understanding the heart of the Woman who “held all these things in her heart.” Mary’s heart connects all of us to her--as woman, mother, mystic, and prophet—to her who holds the Lord in her heart, a heart completely united to the heart of her Son, Jesus the Christ.
Changes In Synaptic Protein Content And Signaling In A Mouse Model Of Fragile X Syndrome, Kelly Birch, Peter W. Vanderklish Phd
Changes In Synaptic Protein Content And Signaling In A Mouse Model Of Fragile X Syndrome, Kelly Birch, Peter W. Vanderklish Phd
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fragile X Syndrome--the most common inherited form of intellectual disability--is characterized by low IQ, impaired social interaction, hyperactivity and impulsivity, and abnormal physical traits including an elongated face and protruding ears. Nearly half of all children with Fragile X also meet diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. Fragile X is caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion on the X chromosome, leading to silencing of the Fragile X mental retardation gene (FMR1) and thus lack of expression of Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP). As a key translational suppressor, FMRP is crucial for normal neural development and synaptic function. The current …
