Thinking Deeply, Creating Richly: Learner Transformation Through Narrative, Kaylea Hascall Champion May 2016

Thinking Deeply, Creating Richly: Learner Transformation Through Narrative, Kaylea Hascall Champion

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Narrative methods support transformative teaching and learning by accessing human cognitive strengths, including memory, reflection, and self-awareness. This paper explores the enduring and mindful use of narrative in education – as a method for transformative teaching and learning. A narrative is the intentional conversion of a group of events, participants, and details into a constructed reality that illustrates causes, characters, and results. Narrative development is a native human process by which we teach, learn, and remember. Narrative educational methods incorporate two key characteristics: integrative sense making, and shared connection building. Diverse disciplines – including biology, psychology, economics, literature, medicine, history, …

Consequences Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) On Hepatic Stellate Cell Activation And Extracellular Matrix Remodeling During Chronic Liver Injury, Cheri Lou Lamb May 2016

Consequences Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) On Hepatic Stellate Cell Activation And Extracellular Matrix Remodeling During Chronic Liver Injury, Cheri Lou Lamb

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a persistent environmental pollutant and high-affinity ligand for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Exposure to TCDD elicits a spectrum of toxic effects, many involving aberrant cell proliferation, activation, and differentiation. The liver is a target organ for TCDD toxicity, and increasing evidence indicates that AhR signaling regulates genes that coordinate deposition and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the liver. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are central to ECM remodeling in the liver. We recently reported that TCDD treatment increases the activation of human HSCs in vitro. The goal of this study was to …

Fecal Microbiome In Epidemiologic Studies [Letter], David A. Drew, Paul Lochhead, Galeb Abu-Ali, Andrew T. Chan, Curtis Huttenhower, Jacques Izard

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

We congratulate Sinha and colleagues on their recent report comparing fecal sample collection methods for epidemiologic studies of the gut microbiome. These data contribute to the increasing body of literature describing robust methodological frameworks for specimen collection and processing. However, their claim that fixation of stool using RNAlater® results in “considerable changes to the microbiome diversity” contrasts with previous findings, including those from their earlier reports. We have previously demonstrated that self-collected stool stabilized with RNAlater® or other fixatives yields high fidelity and reproducibility in compositional profiling of DNA and RNA from shotgun sequence data, compared to immediately-frozen specimens. Additionally, …

Parental Care And Acoustic Communication Of The Smooth Guardian Frog Limnonectes Palavanensis, A Bornean Frog With Possible Sex-Role Reversal, Johana Goyes Vallejos May 2016

Parental Care And Acoustic Communication Of The Smooth Guardian Frog Limnonectes Palavanensis, A Bornean Frog With Possible Sex-Role Reversal, Johana Goyes Vallejos

Doctoral Dissertations

Sexual selection theory predicts that the sex contributing most toward the viability of the offspring will become the choosy sex. In most animal species, females have higher parental investment; thus, sexual selection typically acts more strongly on males, making the females choosy. On rare occasions, male parental investment is so high that it limits the potential for additional mating opportunities. In these cases, females compete for males and males become the choosy sex, leading to a sex-role reversed system. The sex-role reversal hypothesis states that males invest more in the offspring that females do, females display sexually selected traits more …

Data Descriptor: Species Interactions In Occurrence Data For A Community Of Tick-Transmitted Pathogens, Agustín Estrada-Peña, José De La Fuente

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Interactions between tick species, their realized range of hosts, the pathogens they carry and transmit, and the geographic distribution of species in the Western Palearctic were determined based on evidence published between 1970–2014. These relationships were linked to remotely sensed features of temperature and vegetation and used to extract the network of interactions among the organisms. The resulting datasets focused on niche overlap among ticks and hosts, species interactions, and the fraction of the environmental niche in which tick-borne pathogens may circulate as a result of interactions and overlapping environmental traits. The resulting datasets provide a valuable resource for researchers …

Study Of Alternative Functions Of The Mitochondrial Protein Bak, Ma Su Su Aung May 2016

Study Of Alternative Functions Of The Mitochondrial Protein Bak, Ma Su Su Aung

Student Theses and Dissertations

Research in the past 15 years has established roles for the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and Bak in release of death signaling molecules from mitochondria. The process involves relocation of cytoplasmic Bax into the mitochondrial outer membrane to form a giant pore, MAC. Another MAC component, Bak, is constitutively present in the outer membrane regardless of apoptotic stimulation. In this study we investigated the role of Bak in mitochondrial function outside the context of apoptosis. We examined the effects of Bak elimination on emission of reactive oxygen species from mitochondria. Our results indicate a disturbance of free-radical production both in cultured …

The Study Of Drug Interactions During Separation Using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, Leanne Mocniak May 2016

The Study Of Drug Interactions During Separation Using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, Leanne Mocniak

Capstone Projects/Undergraduate Honors Theses

There are numerous existing techniques for forensic toxicological testing, but each one has limitations. Although there have been significant improvements in these techniques over the past 10 years, it still remains very difficult to successfully identify a wide range of drugs from one sample using a single method [12]. This difficulty arises from the major differences in molecular structure, volatility and stability in solution between these drugs. The overall goal of this study is to develop a method using gas chromatography (GC) coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) to separate and accurately identify 10 different drugs of abuse from …

Using Of Spouted Bed Spray Granulation Process For Fabricating Of Metal/Ceramic-Polymer Composites, Eduard Eichner, V. Salikov, M. Dosta, S. Heinrich, G.A. Schneider

Fluidization XV

Naturally occurring structural materials are composites with very high filling degrees on hard constituent. In recent years structure and properties of biological materials have been studied in detail. But it has not been possible to reconstruct this structural design. In this contribution we present a process for the fabrication of very highly filled composite materials by using of the spouted bed spray granulation process.

Spouted bed granulation offers many advantages for the design of composite materials. In this investigation fine particles (dP =10-50 µm) could be uniformly spouted, and optimal properties for further processing to bulk materials can …

Effect Of Electrolyte Concentration On The Capacitance And Mobility Of Graphene, Flint A. Martino May 2016

Effect Of Electrolyte Concentration On The Capacitance And Mobility Of Graphene, Flint A. Martino

Senior Theses

The use of graphene field-effect transistors as a biosensor is increasingly being used to study biological phenomena, due to the sensitivity and low reactivity of graphene. To further improve sensitivity in biological environments, we examined how different salt concentrations affect the mobility of capacitance of the graphene. Samples were also measured after an annealing process. We report on the positive correlation between sensitivity and electrolyte concentration and speculate on methods to improve future detectors. Mobility of the device was found to change from 1.07*103cm2/ (V*s) in de-ionized water to 2.78*103cm2/ (V*s) in …

Modeling The Behavior Of The Graphene To Liquid Interfaces In An Electrolytic Liquid, Caitlin Duffner May 2016

Modeling The Behavior Of The Graphene To Liquid Interfaces In An Electrolytic Liquid, Caitlin Duffner

Senior Theses

Understanding the mechanism for charge transfer between a graphene biosensor and its electrodes within an electrolyte solution is vital to better understand the sources of electrical noise in the system. By measuring the effective resistance and capacitance of the system at different frequencies, it is possible to develop a circuit model of the system's electrical behavior. This model provides a deeper understanding of the fundamental interactions that occur in a top-gated graphene device and provides opportunities to improve a signal. To reduce noise created at the liquid to graphene interface, a buffer layer of Yttrium Oxide was applied. While the …

Developing A Hierarchical Decision Model To Evaluate Nuclear Power Plant Alternative Siting Technologies, Marwan Mossa Lingga May 2016

Developing A Hierarchical Decision Model To Evaluate Nuclear Power Plant Alternative Siting Technologies, Marwan Mossa Lingga

Dissertations and Theses

A strong trend of returning to nuclear power is evident in different places in the world. Forty-five countries are planning to add nuclear power to their grids and more than 66 nuclear power plants are under construction.

Nuclear power plants that generate electricity and steam need to improve safety to become more acceptable to governments and the public. One novel practical solution to increase nuclear power plants' safety factor is to build them away from urban areas, such as offshore or underground. To date, Land-Based siting is the dominant option for siting all commercial operational nuclear power plants. However, the …

An Investigation Of Invasion: Boater Knowledge Concerning Aquatic Invasive Species And The Influence Of The New Zealand Mud Snail On Benthic Food Webs, Samuel Anthony Cimino May 2016

An Investigation Of Invasion: Boater Knowledge Concerning Aquatic Invasive Species And The Influence Of The New Zealand Mud Snail On Benthic Food Webs, Samuel Anthony Cimino

Dissertations and Theses

Invasive species are second only to habitat loss as a leading cause of native species displacement and the management of invasive species costs hundreds of billions annually. Invasion is often conceptualized as a series of stages (Transport, Introduction, Establishment, and Spread), which encourages ecologists to isolate factors that might enable a species to pass from one stage to another and therefore guide prevention or impact management. This thesis addresses each stage of invasion and attempts to determine where management might succeed in preventing invasion or minimizing impacts. The transport and introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) was analyzed by conducting …

The Development And Validation Of The Social Recovery Measure, Casadi "Khaki" Marino May 2016

The Development And Validation Of The Social Recovery Measure, Casadi "Khaki" Marino

Dissertations and Theses

Mental health recovery is a complex phenomenon involving clinical, functional, physical, and social dimensions. The social dimension is understood to involve meaningful relationships and integration with supportive individuals and a wider community. While the recovery model developed from a movement led by consumers and survivors of the mental health system to promote hope, self-determination, and social inclusion, the clinical aspects of recovery have dominated mental health research and practice. The under-investigated area of social recovery calls for psychometrically sound measurement instruments. The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate the Social Recovery Measure (SRM). The study was …

A Simplified Technique For Implant-Abutment Level Impression After Soft Tissue Adaptation Around Provisional Restoration, Ahmad Kutkut, Osama Abu-Hammad, Robert Q. Frazer

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

Impression techniques for implant restorations can be implant level or abutment level impressions with open tray or closed tray techniques. Conventional implant-abutment level impression techniques are predictable for maximizing esthetic outcomes. Restoration of the implant traditionally requires the use of the metal or plastic impression copings, analogs, and laboratory components. Simplifying the dental implant restoration by reducing armamentarium through incorporating conventional techniques used daily for crowns and bridges will allow more general dentists to restore implants in their practices. The demonstrated technique is useful when modifications to implant abutments are required to correct the angulation of malpositioned implants. This technique …

Expression And Function Of Pannexins In The Inner Ear And Hearing, Hong-Bo Zhao May 2016

Expression And Function Of Pannexins In The Inner Ear And Hearing, Hong-Bo Zhao

Otolaryngology--Head & Neck Surgery Faculty Publications

Pannexin (Panx) is a gene family encoding gap junction proteins in vertebrates. So far, three isoforms (Panx1, 2 and 3) have been identified. All of three Panx isoforms express in the cochlea with distinct expression patterns. Panx1 expresses in the cochlea extensively, including the spiral limbus, the organ of Corti, and the cochlear lateral wall, whereas Panx2 and Panx3 restrict to the basal cells of the stria vascularis in the lateral wall and the cochlear bony structure, respectively. However, there is no pannexin expression in auditory sensory hair cells. Recent studies demonstrated that like connexin gap junction gene, Panx1 deficiency …

Method Of Supplementing Cytokine, Chemokine And Growth Factors In Donor Human Milk, Maureen E. Groer, Terri Ashmeade May 2016

Method Of Supplementing Cytokine, Chemokine And Growth Factors In Donor Human Milk, Maureen E. Groer, Terri Ashmeade

USF Patents

Donor milk has become a standard of care for feeding preterm infants, particularly those with gestational ages of 34 weeks or less, whose mothers are not lactating or not producing sufficient milk quantities. However, prior to distribution, donor milk is required to undergo pasteurization, typically using the Holder method, which is believed to destroy immune proteins in the milk and denature many other proteins. Donor milk has been found to contain concentrations of chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors, evidencing the value of donor milk over formula. In light of the findings, donor milk is supplemented with chemokines, cytokines, and growth …

Inhibition Of Stat3 Signal Transduction For Human Cancer Therapy, Richard Jove, William Dalton, Said Sebti, Hua Yu, Richard Heller, Mark Jaroszeski, Richard A. Gilbert, Andrew D. Hamilton

USF Patents

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) proteins have a fundamental role cell signaling, and are activated by a large number of cytokines and growth factors. One member of the STAT family, STAT3, has a critical role in oncogenesis. The present invention relates generally to disruption of the pathway of STAT3 signaling in the treatment of human cancer. STAT3 activation is shown to be present in diverse tumor cell lines and tumors, to promote oncogenesis, to inhibit apoptosis, and to reduce sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents. Inhibition of STAT3 signaling induces apoptosis specifically in tumor cell lines, and increases sensitivity to …

Kimmel Cancer Center Papers, Presentations, and Grand Rounds

Cancer is now viewed as a stem cell disease. There is still no consensus on the metabolic characteristics of cancer stem cells, with several studies indicating that they are mainly glycolytic and others pointing instead to mitochondrial metabolism as their principal source of energy. Cancer stem cells also seem to adapt their metabolism to microenvironmental changes by conveniently shifting energy production from one pathway to another, or by acquiring intermediate metabolic phenotypes. Determining the role of cancer stem cell metabolism in carcinogenesis has become a major focus in cancer research, and substantial efforts are conducted towards discovering clinical targets.

Dynamic Egg Color Mimicry, Daniel Hanley, Michael Sulc, Patricia L. R. Brennan, Mark E. Hauber, Tomas Grim, Marcel Honza

Publications and Research

Evolutionary hypotheses regarding the function of eggshell phenotypes, from solar protection through mimicry, have implicitly assumed that eggshell appearance remains static throughout the laying and incubation periods. However, recent research demonstrates that egg coloration changes over relatively short, biologically relevant timescales. Here, we provide the first evidence that such changes impact brood parasite–host eggshell color mimicry during the incubation stage. First, we use long-term data to establish how rapidly the Acrocephalus arundinaceus Linnaeus (great reed warbler) responded to natural parasitic eggs laid by the Cuculus canorus Linnaeus (common cuckoo). Most hosts rejected parasitic eggs just prior to clutch completion, but …

Less than half of patients suffering from major depressive disorder, a leading cause of disability worldwide, achieve remission with current antidepressants, making it imperative to develop more effective treatment. A new therapeutic direction is emerging from the increased understanding of natural resilience as an active stress-coping process. It is known that potassium (Kþ) channels in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are an active mediator of resilience. However, no druggable targets have been identified to potentiate active resilience mechanisms. In the chronic social defeat stress model of depression, we report that KCNQ-type Kþ channel openers, including FDA-approved drug retigabine (ezogabine), show …
