Crimes can occur in a matter of seconds, with little time available for an eyewitness to encode a perpetrator’s face. The presence of a weapon can further exacerbate this situation. Few studies have featured mock crimes of short duration, especially with a weapon manipulation. We conducted an experiment to investigate the impact of weapon presence and short perpetrator exposure times (3 versus 10 s) on eyewitness confidence and accuracy. We found that recall concerning the perpetrator was worse when a weapon was present, replicating the weapon focus effect. However, there was no effect on eyewitness identification accuracy. Calibration analyses revealed …

2016 General Aviation Flight Training Metrics, Steven Hampton, Ken Byrnes, Troy Techau
Publications
The study evaluates training at a collegiate flight training program (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) providing metrics for time and costs from zero time to a Commercial certificated Pilot with Instrument and Multi-Engine add-ons. Training times for flights and activities are pulled from a sophisticated database used at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and matched with flight and ground school lessons and then further subdivided to determine the amount of time spent training in areas of operation that are prescribed by the Federal Aviation Administration in the published Practical Test Standards and Airman Certification Standards for those seeking pilot licenses and ratings.

Systematic Review Of Veterans' Coping Strategies: How Can Rural Veterans Improve Their Quality Of Life?, Tracey Marie Barnett, Alexa Smith-Osborne, Freda Barnett-Braddock
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
This systematic review examines the empirical literature on an emerging body of coping strategies (CS), both civilian readjustment and health-risk related, experienced by United States military veterans exposed to combat stress and other military lifestyle stressors. Studies that met inclusion criteria were selected among quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) criteria and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) were applied to all studies. Seventeen reports meeting a priori inclusion criteria were extracted from 107 studies accessed through 9 electronic databases. Data were synthesized to investigate two research questions informing …

Investigating Students' Experiences With Sexual Victimization And Their Perceptions Of The Overall Campus Climate At A Rural Institution, Jordana N. Navarro, Shelly Clevenger
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
This study examined sexual assault of both females and males attending a mid-sized rural southern college campus with fewer than 12,000 students. The online survey (N = 659) included questions to measure attempted and/or completed rape, sexual coercion, and sexual contact. We investigated whether perceptions of the overall campus climate differed between student survivors and student non-victims. Findings indicated that sexual victimization occurred at this university, and that this social problem is not limited to large urban schools.
Teaching Macro Practice Through The Use Of Experiential Instruction And Collaboration: A Formula To Create Sustainable Community Resources, Timothy O. Davis Ph.D., Kendal L. Carswell
Teaching Macro Practice Through The Use Of Experiential Instruction And Collaboration: A Formula To Create Sustainable Community Resources, Timothy O. Davis Ph.D., Kendal L. Carswell
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
While delivering an organizations and communities class to a cohort of students in an outlying rural area, a social work program explored ways to educate students effectively while simultaneously exploring and devising strategies to fill local gaps in community services. The project utilized evidence-based learning strategies focusing on experiential instruction and collaboration with local community agencies. Using aspects of the flipped classroom as well as service learning, the course was particularly interested in engaging with community stakeholders to identify issues arising from the realities of a rural service environment. Students identified a project, worked with community partners, and delivered recommendations …

Aggression And Driving: Separating Ourselves From The Games, Jennifer Yin
Pop Culture Intersections
In 2015 on a busy street in Los Angeles, California, two cars were driving next to each other. One decided to cut in front of the other, angering the first driver, who decided not to let the second into his lane. The frustrated second driver eventually managed to get into the other lane, when both decided to get out of their vehicles. The drivers ended up getting into a fist fight in the middle of the road, and one driver was almost struck by the passing vehicles. Unfortunately, both returned to their vehicles and were not caught by the police …

Rural/Urban Differences In Inmate Perceptions Of The Punitiveness Of Prison: Does Having Children Make Prison More Punitive, Kecia R. Johnson, David C. May
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Many researchers have argued that an inmate’s relationship with their family is an important determinant of their behavior while incarcerated and their success in the community upon release from prison. Nevertheless, no research of which we are aware examines the impact of an inmate’s parental involvement on their perception of the punitiveness of prison while incarcerated or whether this impact varies between prisoners raised in rural or urban areas. The current study used exchange rates from more than 1200 incarcerated prisoners to examine this relationship. Our findings suggest that whether an inmate has a child has almost no impact on …

Perceptions Of Risk And Reward Of Rapid Energy Exploration In Rural Kansas: Are Older Adults Different?, Rosemary Wright, Richard D. Muma, Teresa S. Radebaugh
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Rural south-central Kansas recently experienced a rapid expansion and decline of oil and gas exploration by large energy companies using high volume hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. This resulted in dramatic changes in the daily lives of residents of this area, many of whom are age 65 and older. To date, there has been little research examining similar effects on older adults. Our qualitative study used focus groups to explore age differences in perceptions of reward and risk associated with exploration activity in one community. We found that although all participants welcomed positive economic effects, older adults compared with other …

Do Rural School Resource Officers Contribute To Net-Widening? Evidence From A Southern State, David C. May, Raymond Barranco, Rick Ruddell, Angela Robertson
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
There has been considerable recent scholarly commentary about the existence of a school-to-prison pipeline. In this research, several authors have questioned whether the presence of school resource officers (SROs) has increased the proportion of students being referred to juvenile justice systems for status or minor offenses. Research to date, however, has not established a clear relationship between the presence of SROs and these referrals. In this study, we examine the relationship between referrals made in urban and rural schools to determine whether rural students are disadvantaged by net widening when compared with their urban counterparts. To carry out this study …
Judging The Effectiveness Of Anti-Poaching Hotlines, Egan Kyle Green
Judging The Effectiveness Of Anti-Poaching Hotlines, Egan Kyle Green
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
All state wildlife law enforcement agencies in the United States have toll-free phone numbers that allow citizens to report wildlife crimes that they witness. The success of these lines in leading to the apprehension of wildlife criminals is reliant on the knowledge of the caller. This is particularly problematic for wildlife violations due to the varying conditions that dictate whether the reported act is a crime. These conditions include factors such as time of year, time of day, type of gear used, as well as others. Therefore, in order for anti-poaching hotlines to be an effective means of reducing wildlife …

Human Trafficking, Drug Trafficking, And The Death Penalty, Felicity Gerry, Narelle Sherwill
Human Trafficking, Drug Trafficking, And The Death Penalty, Felicity Gerry, Narelle Sherwill
Indonesia Law Review
Both Australia and Indonesia have made commitments to combatting human trafficking. Through the experience of Mary Jane Veloso it can be seen that it is most often the vulnerable ‘mule’ that is apprehended by law enforcement and not the powerful leaders of crime syndicates. It is unacceptable that those vulnerable individuals may face execution for acts committed under threat of force, coercion, fraud, deception or abuse of power. For this reason it is vital that a system of victim identification is developed, including better training for law enforcement, legal representatives and members of the judiciary. This paper builds on submissions …
The Past Is Another Country: Designing Amnesty Law For Past Human Rights Violators, Harison Citrawan
The Past Is Another Country: Designing Amnesty Law For Past Human Rights Violators, Harison Citrawan
Indonesia Law Review
In the context past gross human rights violation cases in Indonesia, the President’s constitutional authority to propose amnesty law might by and large implicate legal and ethical aspects. Holistically, any forgiveness and oblivion against any human rights violators should consider the development and the dynamic of international criminal law, which arguably have been directed to an absolute individual criminal responsibility. Against this issue, this paper finds that based on legal and ethical arguments, accompanied with various technical preconditions outlined in the Belfast Guideline on Amnesty and Accountability, an amnesty towards past gross human rights violators must be taken paradigmatically. Arguably, …

Enhancing Transfer Student Success: The Transfer Seminar, Thomas J. Grites, Amanda Farina
Enhancing Transfer Student Success: The Transfer Seminar, Thomas J. Grites, Amanda Farina
Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University
Transfer students arguably constitute the largest and most diverse subpopulation of college students today, and it is growing, especially in light of the national economy, rising student loan debt, and significant grant funding being channeled to community colleges, whose students constitute the majority of transfer students (Grites and Duncan, 2012). The issues that confront these students are multi-dimensional, yet often go unnoticed at the receiving institution.1 No matter where the student attended previously, the new institution will most likely have different policies, academic standards, faculty expectations, advising systems, peer groups, and even vocabulary, leaving the transfer student uninformed, uninvolved, and …

Punishing On A Curve, Adi Leibovitch
Punishing On A Curve, Adi Leibovitch
Virginia Journal of Criminal Law
Does the punishment of one defendant change because of how she fares in comparison to the other defendants on the judge’s docket? This article demonstrates that the troubling answer is yes. Judges sentence the same case more harshly when their caseloads contain relatively milder offenses, and more leniently when their caseloads contain more serious crimes. I call this problem “punishing on a curve.”
Consequently, the article shows how such relative sentencing patterns put into question the prevailing practice of establishing specialized courts or courts of limited jurisdiction. Because judges are punishing on a curve, the court’s jurisdiction systematically shapes sentencing …
Creating An Antidote To Student Apathy: "The News Of The Week", Demetra M. Pappas
Creating An Antidote To Student Apathy: "The News Of The Week", Demetra M. Pappas
Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University
This September, at a conference dinner following two days of interdisciplinary presentations, an environmental scientist seated next to me bemoaned the fact that she could not “get them to talk.” Nobody questioned that the “them” was students, and a sociologist at the table chimed in that her students were also apparently disinclined toward interaction. As nearly everyone at the table taught at a regional comprehensive university, this invited an opportunity to discuss an in class pedagogical methodology that I have developed and found to be extremely successful in stimulating student participation: “The News of the Week.”
