Violence Against Indigenous Males In Canada With A Focus On Missing And Murdered Indigenous Men, Jen Mt. Pleasant
Violence Against Indigenous Males In Canada With A Focus On Missing And Murdered Indigenous Men, Jen Mt. Pleasant
Social Justice and Community Engagement
The literature review for this Major Research Project (MRP) documents research on violence against Indigenous women and leads to the following observation: if we look at the historical roots of why these women become targets of violence today, we realize that Indigenous men were also the targets of this very same historical colonial violence. Yet, research has shown that Indigenous males have largely been studied from the perspective of the perpetrators of violence and never as victims (Brownbridge, 2008; Brzozowski et al., 2006; Chenault, 2011; Dylan et al., 2008; Innes, 2015; RCMP, 2014; RCMP, 2015; Statistics Canada, 1998, 1999, 2003, …

Police academies traditionally emphasize the importance of being physically fit. The purpose of this research was to determine cadet baseline physical fitness characteristics and assess effectiveness of a 16-week training program. Sixty-eight cadets (61 men, 7 women) volunteered to have baseline physical fitness characteristics assessed, and 55 cadets (49 men, 6 women) completed further testing at weeks 8 and 16. The testing comprised hand grip (strength), arm crank (upper-body power), 30 seconds Wingate (lower body power), sum of skinfolds and percentage body fat (body composition), 40-yard dash (sprint speed), 1 repetition maximum bench press (strength), T-test (agility), and sit-and-reach (flexibility). …

Emerging Justice Technologies And The Need For Evaluation, Jason Tashea
Publications and Research
This report from John Jay College’s Research and Evaluation Center examines the role of emerging technologies in criminal justice reform, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluation to assess effectiveness and avoid unintended consequences. It suggests that technology should support, not replace, human judgment in justice processes.
Psychopathology And Crime Causation: Insanity Or Excuse?, Meagan Cline
Psychopathology And Crime Causation: Insanity Or Excuse?, Meagan Cline
Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research
One of the most controversial topics in the criminal justice industry is the "insanity defense" and its applicability or validity in prosecuting criminal cases. The purpose of this assignment is to identify and discuss psychopathology and crime causation in terms of mental illness, research, and the insanity defense. For this evaluation, information was gathered from scholarly research, textbooks, dictionaries, and published literature. These sources were then carefully reviewed and applied to the evaluation in a concise, yet informative, manner. This assignment also addresses some of the key terms in psychopathology and crime causation, including various theories, definitions, and less commonly …
Cigarette Taxes And Illicit Trade In Europe, James E. Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick
Cigarette Taxes And Illicit Trade In Europe, James E. Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Cigarettes are highly taxed in Europe to discourage tobacco use and to fund public-health measures to mitigate the harms from tobacco consumption. At higher prices (more precisely, at higher differentials between licit and black-market prices) consumers substitute more toward illicit cigarettes. Illicit retail trade in cigarettes (IRTC) includes counterfeiting and smuggling—either of legally purchased products, from lower-tax to higher-tax jurisdictions, or of entirely non-tax-paid cigarettes. The existing literature includes claims that taxes are not an important factor determining the scale of IRTC. We investigate these claims with data from 1999–2013 in the European Union. We find that while the simple …

Florida's Stand Your Ground Regime: Legislative Direction, Prosecutorial Discretion, Public Pressures, And The Legitimization Of The Criminal Justice System, Mary Elizabeth Castillo
Florida's Stand Your Ground Regime: Legislative Direction, Prosecutorial Discretion, Public Pressures, And The Legitimization Of The Criminal Justice System, Mary Elizabeth Castillo
Journal of Legislation
This note seeks to examine the tripartite relationship between legislative delegation, prosecutorial discretion, and public pressures in the context of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" regime. In the context of high profile criminal cases, a prosecutor faces significant public and political pressures that may influence her exercise of discretion in that case. Ultimately, Castillo argues that when a prosecutor succumbs to these pressures, it undermines her expertise, experience and exercise of discretion, and undercuts the legitimacy of the criminal justice system as a whole.
