Media Education In Ireland: An Overview, Brian O'Neill
Media Education In Ireland: An Overview, Brian O'Neill
Irish Communication Review
The Irish educational system is frequently celebrated as a world class system that is held in high domestic esteem, has contributed substantially to Ireland’s economic success and been compared very favourably with our counterparts elsewhere in the European Union. Such contentment belies the fact that it has also been a system very slow to change, is notoriously centralised and has only in the last decade instituted significant legislative reform that will enable and facilitate the growth of new curricular areas such as media studies – the topic of this article – an area in which Ireland lags substantially behind our …

Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski
Faculty Publications
Fashion magazines have been shown to have a negative relationship with body dissatisfaction and psychological health, while the effects of health magazines on body dissatisfaction and psychological health have mainly been studied with men. However, because of gender differences, health magazine consumption effects on men cannot be applied equally to women. Therefore, the present study uses sociocultural theory to study health magazine and possible similarities to fashion magazine effects on women’s body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance is then explored as a mediator and potential moderator in the established relationship between magazine consumption and psychological health, …

Creating a Culture of Compliance with Integrity: It Takes More Than Solid Policies and a Snazzy Submission System
(1) Problem Statement
IRB Offices can often have contentious relationships with researchers, and building a culture of compliance with integrity as well as a level of mutual trust and respect, can often be a very overwhelming task.
Solid policies and procedures and a user-friendly electronic submission system are now best practices for streamlining IRB operations. However, our ongoing goal is to find novel approaches to outreach and education, subsequently allowing us to build that mutual understanding of purpose and collaboration.
(2) Program …

Scientific Uncertainty In Media Content: Some Reflections On This Special Issue, Robert J. Griffin
Scientific Uncertainty In Media Content: Some Reflections On This Special Issue, Robert J. Griffin
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
It was an honor to be called upon to be the anchor reviewer for this special issue of Public Understanding of Science devoted to new perspectives on media presentations of scientific uncertainty. But more than that, it was for me a pleasure and an education. It is always rewarding when, as one of the reviewers of submitted manuscripts, you get so engaged by the content and quality of the research in the articles before you that you have to remind yourself that your task is that of the critic. That happened repeatedly with all of the research articles in this …
I, Exist. Exhibition Identity Branding: Conveying The Doctrine Of Existentialism, Xuan Jiang
I, Exist. Exhibition Identity Branding: Conveying The Doctrine Of Existentialism, Xuan Jiang
Theses
Literature and philosophy are the concise expressions of human inner-self. The main idea which all of Existentialists have in common is the fundamental doctrine that existence precedes essence. This idea has its own historical significance for explaining the fact of thinking and action. Why do we exist? The question of existence is disturbing and unsettling. It seems inevitable for human beings to face this question. We cannot help but feel anguished because we are conscious beings.
I exist is a project that aims to develop a brand identity for a exhibition about Existentialism, or more precisely, a project that conveys …

Zen Design: Applying Zen Principles To Brand Identity In Contemporary Graphic Design, Yun Zheng
Zen Design: Applying Zen Principles To Brand Identity In Contemporary Graphic Design, Yun Zheng
Theses
Relaxing and finding inner balance is extremely important to those of us who live in a fast-paced, modern world. Zen has become more and more popular in different cultures and we can see the shadows of it in many of the products we interact with and use in daily life. It is being used in branding intentionally and unintentionally in some form but very few of these efforts are effective.
Through research and informational analysis, this thesis provides a simple way to understand Zen principles from psychological and aesthetic perspectives, and also identifies the similarities and differences between Modernism and …

Designing A Data Warehouse For Cyber Crimes, Il-Yeol Song, John D. Maguire, Ki Jung Lee, Namyoun Choi, Xiaohua Hu, Peter Chen
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
One of the greatest challenges facing modern society is the rising tide of cyber crimes. These crimes, since they rarely fit the model of conventional crimes, are difficult to investigate, hard to analyze, and difficult to prosecute. Collecting data in a unified framework is a mandatory step that will assist the investigator in sorting through the mountains of data. In this paper, we explore designing a dimensional model for a data warehouse that can be used in analyzing cyber crime data. We also present some interesting queries and the types of cyber crime analyses that can be performed based on …

Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas
Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Throughout the month of November 2016, I undertook a creative environmental art project in Melbourne, Australia. I chose to create a water-soluble oil painting (dimensions 3 ft. x 4 ft.) that represents water pollution problems in the city of Melbourne, particularly in Port Phillip Bay. These problems include toxic stormwater runoff, plastics pollution and plastic nurdles, as well as nutrient buildup and algal overgrowth. The painting includes messages regarding sustainability; sustainable action limits the use of our natural resources so that humans can preserve the environment for future generations rather than degrade it. In the painting, I combine conceptual and …

Old Habits: Sister Bernadette And The Potential Revival Of Sentence Diagramming In Written Legal Advocacy, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Old Habits: Sister Bernadette And The Potential Revival Of Sentence Diagramming In Written Legal Advocacy, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Faculty Publications
Given the rise of e-filing and of software that makes it easier than ever to create images and insert them into documents, the nearly lost art of sentence diagramming may be due for a revival in written legal advocacy. This article posits that while sentence diagrams can indeed, in a limited set of cases, add to the persuasive force of a statutory-interpretation argument, the diagrams themselves are less compelling than attorneys may believe them to be, and diagrams cannot elucidate all types of interpretive issues. Like an analogy, a sentence diagram can illustrate an argument aptly — or ineptly — …

School Staff Workload Study: Final Report To The Australian Education Union – Victorian Branch, Paul R. Weldon, Lawrence Ingvarson
School and system improvement
The School Staff Workload Study was commissioned by the Victorian branch of the Australian Education Union (the Union) in March 2016. The study involved the design and delivery of an online survey by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The survey was a census of the Union membership and was open to the majority of members in Term 2, June 2016. The survey targeted three groups: teachers, school leaders (Principal class), and education support staff. The survey was intended to provide a detailed picture of the workload of the Union membership and, by extension, Victorian government school staff. Attention …

Eportfolios, Google Drive, And Cognitive Process Theory, Sarah Elizabeth Carl
English Theses & Dissertations
ePortfolios have gained popularity in higher education to document learning, assessing, and career showcasing. This thesis discusses how ePortfolios can be used in first-year writing classrooms to show writing processes using Google Drive, a non-ePortfolio platform and its connection to Linda Flower and John Hayes’ cognitive process theory. The thesis shows how a professor could use Google Drive as an ePortfolio platform through assignments.
