Truman Gates And The Transformation Of Otherness In The Film, Next Of Kin, Roger Guy Oct 2016

Truman Gates And The Transformation Of Otherness In The Film, Next Of Kin, Roger Guy

ASA Annual Conference

Roger Guy will discuss the concept of otherness and kinfolk from down home who come to the aid of Appalachian migrant and Chicago police officer, Truman Gates as conveyed in the film “Next of Kin” by contrasting and evaluating depictions in the film with those in his own work in the social history of Appalachians in Chicago. Truman Gates represents the assimilated urban Appalachian as contrasted with his rural kinfolk down home who convey his past and the transformation possible for Appalachian migrants. He argues that otherness is a dynamic concept being shaped by those it depicts as well as …

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long Oct 2016

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long

ASA Annual Conference

Old-time Appalachian tune titles and song lyrics frequently reference food and drink. These include specific dishes (for example, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, moonshine), ingredients (corn, cabbage, squirrels, chickens, sack of meal), and cooking implements (skillet, frying pan), as well as ways of obtaining food (hunting, farming, hoeing corn) and cooking it (frying, boiling). These references give descriptions of typical foods of the region, but they also offer an homogenized impression of what constitutes Appalachian foodways. While there are basic ingredients common throughout the area, there is a great deal of diversity in Appalachian foodways that reflects the diverse ethnicities, social classes, …

Motivations And Locavore Tendencies: A Preliminary Visitor Study Of Lexington, Kentucky Craft Breweries, Kenneth J. Berend Jr., Michael J. Bradley, James N. Maples

ASA Annual Conference

The emergence of craft beer in recent years has contributed to increased participation in beer tourism. However, there is a dearth of literature on brewery visitors. A key first step in researching beer tourism is to obtain an initial understanding of who is visiting breweries and why. This may provide information to better market target audiences. This information provides valuable insight for Kentucky brewery management and operations. Although this research concentrates on one state, it may enhance experiences at breweries in other states, increasing initial and repeat visitation. This study hopes to bring forth more information similar to the visitor …

Increasing Rural Tourism: A Demographic Profile Of Visitors To An Ohv Park In Rural Kentucky, Shaunna L. Scott, Michael J. Bradley, James Maples

ASA Annual Conference

As the foundation for their local economies continue to change, communities in rural eastern Kentucky continue to struggle economically. In efforts to help these rural communities recover, leadership and entrepreneurs have identified natural resources in eastern Kentucky as a footing by which to build a new economic structure related to outdoor recreation. As awareness of these areas continues to grow, many outdoor recreation resources and experiences are generating investment and recreation interest. In that outdoor recreation development is already in process in many places, those interested in facilitating these experiences have decisions to make regarding development and marketing. However, there …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Drug Court Clients’ Perceptions Of Procedural Justice On Graduation Rates And Recidivism, Cassandra A. Atkin-Plunk, Gaylene Armstrong Oct 2016

An Examination Of The Impact Of Drug Court Clients’ Perceptions Of Procedural Justice On Graduation Rates And Recidivism, Cassandra A. Atkin-Plunk, Gaylene Armstrong

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Over the years, researchers have found drug courts reduce recidivism for participants. Scholars have hypothesized that drug courts are effective at producing positive outcomes for participants due in part to a case management approach that implements concepts of procedural justice. Using a convenience sample of participants involved in one drug court, this study adds to the limited body of research on procedural justice and drug courts by examining whether variation in drug court clients’ perceptions of procedural justice is related to their likelihood of graduation from drug court and recidivism. Results, policy implications, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Flood Realities, Perceptions, And The Depth Of Divisions On Climate, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Cameron P. Wake, Joel N. Hartter, Thomas G. Safford, Alli J. Puchlopek Oct 2016

Flood Realities, Perceptions, And The Depth Of Divisions On Climate, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Cameron P. Wake, Joel N. Hartter, Thomas G. Safford, Alli J. Puchlopek

Sociology

Research has led to broad agreement among scientists that anthropogenic climate change is happening now and likely to worsen. In contrast to scientific agreement, US public views remain deeply divided, largely along ideological lines. Science communication has been neutralised in some arenas by intense counter-messaging, but as adverse climate impacts become manifest they might intervene more persuasively in local perceptions. We look for evidence of this occurring with regard to realities and perceptions of flooding in the northeastern US state of New Hampshire. Although precipitation and flood damage have increased, with ample news coverage, most residents do not see a …

A Study Of Positions Available In Additive Manufacturing/3d Printing And The Education And Skill Requirements For These Positions, Renee Christine Colletti Oct 2016

A Study Of Positions Available In Additive Manufacturing/3d Printing And The Education And Skill Requirements For These Positions, Renee Christine Colletti

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Additive manufacturing is defined as the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies. Additive manufacturing positions are growing at an exponential rate, and the adoption of this disruptive technology is projected to have a significant impact on corporate strategies and culture. The purpose of this study was to identify the types of positions available in the additive manufacturing field and the skills and educational background required. A mixed-methods research design was employed. Two content analyses were conducted. The first was an analysis of 286 position descriptions obtained from five job …

The Effect Of Confirmation Bias In Criminal Investigative Decision Making, Wayne A. Wallace Oct 2016

The Effect Of Confirmation Bias In Criminal Investigative Decision Making, Wayne A. Wallace

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

Confirmation bias occurs when a person believes in or searches for evidence to support his or her favored theory while ignoring or excusing disconfirmatory evidence and is disinclined to change his or her belief once he or she arrives at a conclusion. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether emotionally charged evidence and evidence presentation order could influence an investigator's belief in a suspect's guilt. The study included 166 sworn police officers (basic training recruits, patrol officers, and criminal investigators) who completed online surveys in response to criminal vignettes across different scenarios to record their measure of …

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective Framework Oct 2016

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective Framework

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Engaging today’s issues in higher education requires strong analytical tools that can address the complex nature of our institutional systems and their involved actors. This paper forwards a critical race institutional logics perspective (CRILP). CRILP examines both organizations as they are embedded in a neoliberal and racist society and actor identity, agency, decision-making, and their relation to power. It is important to centralize actor-level racial identity and intersecting identities as race and racism are still pervasive in today’s society. Additionally, the current state of higher education as a market-driven entity leads to thinking about the ways that neoliberalism have permeated …

Challenging The Utility Of A Racial Microaggressions Framework Through A Systematic Review Of Racially Biased Incidents On Campus Oct 2016

Challenging The Utility Of A Racial Microaggressions Framework Through A Systematic Review Of Racially Biased Incidents On Campus

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Despite claims of being in a “postracial” era, racially biased incidents pervade college and university campuses across the U.S., as evidenced in the continual media coverage of such incidents. In recognizing the complexities of these incidents, we sought to offer a contemporary review of racially biased incidents on college and university campuses and to explore the extent to which they represent covert forms of racial microaggressions versus more overt forms of racism. We conducted a content analysis of all news-making racially biased incidents that occurred on college and university campuses between August 1, 2005 and May 1, 2010, identifying 205 …
