State Space Analysis Of Dominant Structures In Dynamic Social Systems, Jeremy B. Sato
State Space Analysis Of Dominant Structures In Dynamic Social Systems, Jeremy B. Sato
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Many systems involving human relationships are modeled as dynamic systems, as diverse as urban population growth, diffusion of innovations, spread of viruses, and supply chain management. A fundamental assumption is that these systems contain variables which accumulate and deplete over time (people, innovation adoptions, infections, and orders), and whose dynamics are determined by societal rules and human decision making processes. These assumptions allow the system to be formally expressed by ordinary differential equations which are often nonlinear and contain multiple state variables and feedback loops. Analytical methods have been developed to identify the dominant feedback loops which primarily influence the …
The Normative Problem Of Shame, Timothy James Oakberg
The Normative Problem Of Shame, Timothy James Oakberg
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
What role should shame play in our lives? This is the normative problem of shame, and it is the focus of this dissertation. Through an examination of empirical research on shame and shame-proneness, I argue that shame should have only a very limited role in our lives. More specifically, we ought not cultivate shame, because a substantial amount of empirical literature points to the conclusion that shame-proneness is counterproductive at both an individual and a societal level. Expanding on this general answer to the normative problem of shame, I discuss in detail three proposals regarding shame from the realms of …
A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding How Women Make Breast Cancer Treatment Decisions Within The Context Of Communities, Lailea Noel
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
African-American women have a 40% higher mortality rate from breast cancer than White women. While there are many factors contributing to this disparity, the timely initiation of treatment is growing area of interest. Certain treatments are associated with increased survival for women with a breast cancer diagnosis, yet evidence suggests that African American women use these treatments less frequently compared to White women with similar tumor characteristics. An under-explored area of attention for scientific studies is how to identify and engage in care women who do not follow up with treatment following a suspicious finding. To date these women have …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Suicidal Behaviors, And Body Investment In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Young Adults, Emily Cox
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
College-aged individuals who identify with a sexual minority orientation are at high risk for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behaviors. Research is lacking on identification of factors contributing to increased risk for this population. This study examined two facets of body investment, body protection and body feelings, as they relate to NSSI, individual and total suicidal behaviors, and sexual orientation. It was hypothesized that NSSI and individual suicidal behaviors would be more frequent in the sexual minority sample compared to the heterosexual sample, body protection and body feelings would be poorer in sexual minorities compared to the heterosexual sample, and …
We The People: We Survive, We Work, We Live, We Belong An Autobiographical Study Of One Refugee’S Victory Over Poverty And Racism To Lead An English Learner Program, Sambath Ouk
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Research on refugees and refugee students is often done second hand by researchers who are non-refugees. The opportunities to research, write, and tell their story first hand are minimal. This capstone paper is a first-hand narrative from a refugee student who overcame cultural dissonance, poverty and the struggle of identity to have a successful career leading an English Learner (EL) program in the state of Minnesota. The purpose of this research study is to identify what support measures are needed to help refugee students defeat their barriers in order to achieve their academic and personal goals. This research utilizes the …

Effects Of Incorporating Multiculturalism In A High School Civics Classroom For Increased Student Interest And Engagement, Alison Beatt Ellertson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this study is, what are the effects of incorporating multiculturalism in a high school civics classroom for increased student interest and engagement? This action research study was conducted in a ninth grade civics classroom over the course of three weeks and in three separate class periods. There were 85 students included in the research. Students were observed, interviewed and participated in a survey. The research compared a unit that had limited multicultural elements to a unit that fit a multicultural framework and curriculum. Findings suggest that relevancy is key to keeping students interest and introducing …

Can Philanthropy Be Taught?, Lindsey Mcdougle, Danielle Mcdonald, Huafeng Li, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Chengxin Xu
Education Faculty Articles and Research
In recent years, colleges and universities have begun investing significant resources into an innovative pedagogy known as experiential philanthropy. The pedagogy is considered to be a form of service-learning. It is defined as a learning approach that provides students with opportunities to study social problems and nonprofit organizations and then make decisions about investing funds in them. Experiential philanthropy is intended to integrate academic learning with community engagement by teaching students not only about the practice of philanthropy but also how to evaluate philanthropic responses to social issues. Despite this intent, there has been scant evidence demonstrating that this type …

Marijuana Use Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men And The Hiv Care Continuum: Findings From The Uconnect Cohort, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are at highest risk for HIV seroconversion in the United States. Successful movement through the HIV care continuum is an important intervention for limiting onwards HIV transmission. Objective: Little data exists on how substances most commonly used by YBMSM, such as marijuana, are related to the HIV continuum, which represents the primary aim of this study. Methods: A cohort of YBMSM (n = 618) was generated through respondent-driven sampling. Frequency of marijuana use and marijuana use as a sex-drug were assessed across the HIV care continuum using weighted logistic regression …

Social Work And Nursing Student Simulation Experiences For Highly-Sensitive, Low-Exposure Patient Encounters, Donna Paris, Ruth Bargainer, April Beckling, Robyn G. Faz, Terran Keidl, Wayne Paris, Kathryn Whitcomb
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Purpose: The typical health profession student is trained with minimal exposure in how to respond as a member of an interprofessional team to highly sensitive patient encounters. Due to the prevalence of sexual assault, infant abandonment, and child abuse in the southwest U.S., faculty from schools of nursing and social work at two universities identified a need to prepare their students to function as an effective interprofessional team in highly-sensitive, low-exposure patient care situations.
Methods: Sexual assault, infant abandonment, and child abuse scenarios for senior-level nursing and graduate-level social work students were developed and implemented. Faculty also collaborated with sexual …

Ptsd Symptom Severities, Interpersonal Traumas, And Benzodiazepines Are Associated With Substance-Related Problems In Trauma Patients, Jeffrey Guina, Ramzi W. Nahhas, Adam J. Goldberg, Seth Farnsworth
Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Trauma is commonly associated with substance-related problems, yet associations between specific substances and specific posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSSs) are understudied. We hypothesized that substance-related problems are associated with PTSS severities, interpersonal traumas, and benzodiazepine prescriptions. Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey methodology in a consecutive sample of adult outpatients with trauma histories (n = 472), we used logistic regression to examine substance-related problems in general (primary, confirmatory analysis), as well as alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug problems specifically (secondary, exploratory analyses) in relation to demographics, trauma type, PTSSs, and benzodiazepine prescriptions. Results: After adjusting for multiple testing, several factors …

Factors Contributing To The Economic Self-Sufficiency Of At-Risk Foster Youth Who Have Aged Out Of Care, Alexzandra M. Hust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foster youth aging out of care encounter many struggles upon transitioning into adulthood, resulting in an increased risk of homelessness and adverse social, health, and financial outcomes. This study aimed to determine if various factors (environmental factors: education, mental health service, social support and personal factors: incarceration, substance abuse referral, and unplanned parenthood) were associated with indicators of economic self-sufficiency (full-time and part-time employment, housing stability, and use of financial, food, and housing assistance). Multiple logistic regressions were conducted to explore risk and predictive factors of each indicator of economic self-sufficiency with a sample of 265 19 year old foster …

Acer Research Conference Proceedings (2016), Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
The focus of ACER’s Research Conference 2016 will be on what we are learning from research about ways of improving levels of STEM learning. Australia faces significant challenges in promoting improved science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning in our schools. Research Conference 2016 will showcase research into what it will take to address these challenges, which include: the decline in Australian students’ mathematical and scientific ‘literacy’; the decline in STEM study in senior school; a shortage of highly qualified STEM subject teachers, and curriculum challenges. You will hear from researchers who work with teachers to engage students in studying …

Compliance With An Evidence-Based Policy For Improving Youth Mental Health Services, Vanesa A. Ringle
Open Access Theses
Little is known about rates and patterns of compliance with state policies aimed at improving the quality of mental health services youth receive in community settings. This study examined compliance with clinical practice guidelines that recommended service packages developed by the State of Texas to support an evidence-based practice policy. Under the policy, clinics were allowed to override the recommended service package, in recognition that following the practice guidelines would not always be feasible. To examine the implications of these overrides, medical records were extracted for 727 child and adolescent clients who received mental health treatment at one of 4 …
