The Social Worker’S Role In Ensuring Quality Counsel For Defendants With Mental Illness, Lauren M. Pappacena Aug 2016

The Social Worker’S Role In Ensuring Quality Counsel For Defendants With Mental Illness, Lauren M. Pappacena

21st Century Social Justice

The current literature surrounding the intersection of criminal justice and mental health is addressed. First, the history of overrepresentation of individuals with a mental health disorder in the criminal justice system is discussed, followed by a discussion of the current gaps in the literature. These gaps need to be addressed to inform better practices among public defenders and their decision making role with clients who have a mental health disorder. The lack of research is evident in ambiguous judicial guidance in ensuring that defendants with a mental health disorder are able to exercise autonomy relevant to their case. Social workers …

Teen Pregnancy Among Latinas: A Literature Review, Kathleen E. Keogh Aug 2016

Teen Pregnancy Among Latinas: A Literature Review, Kathleen E. Keogh

21st Century Social Justice

The overall decline of teen birth rates in the U.S. is problematized by persistent racial disparities in these rates. Latina teens are especially affected, as they have the highest teen birth rate of any racial or ethnic group. High teen birth rates among Latinas even persist in locales where the overall teen birth rate is below the national average, such as Suffolk County, NY. Socioeconomic, racial, and cultural factors contribute to the birth rate for Latina teens. Traditional strategies for teen pregnancy prevention, such as comprehensive sexuality education and increased healthcare access, inadequately address Latino cultural values that normalize teen …

Lgbtq Homeless Youth In Harlem: A Lack Of Resources Despite Need, Julie East Aug 2016

Lgbtq Homeless Youth In Harlem: A Lack Of Resources Despite Need, Julie East

21st Century Social Justice

Despite only 10% of youth identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ), 40% experience homelessness. The lack of services and resources available to the population in New York City have left up to 20,000 LGBTQ youth homeless. A plethora of reasons account for this, such as cultural and religious objections, a lack of resources from the government, and a lack of education about LGBTQ youth. Despite increased funding for and attention to LGBTQ homeless youth services, efforts have been largely inadequate. Therefore, it is necessary for increased involvement and attention from the general public and advocates to secure …

Reintegration From Sex Trafficking: Chinese Women In Flushing, Ny, Siyun Deng

21st Century Social Justice

This article attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of the needs for reintegration from sex trafficking and the gap of current social services provided to foreign national victims in the United States by focusing on Chinese female victims in Flushing NY. Through the research, the author understands the safe long-term housing ranks first among all the victims' needs for social services in the process of reintegration, which hasn’t been sufficiently addressed yet. Although the U.S. Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) to protect and assist international victims, and made T-visas available, the laudable goal of protecting and restoring …

Differences In Interview Responses Provided To Researchers Based On Their Ethnicity, Phenice Chapman-Walker Aug 2016

Differences In Interview Responses Provided To Researchers Based On Their Ethnicity, Phenice Chapman-Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Although diversity is an issue often discussed in education, a lack of diversity continues to persist within the research sciences. The purpose of this study was to see if there is a difference in how people respond to an ethnic majority researcher in comparison to an ethnic minority researcher. Parents of pre-school aged children participated in a semi-structured interview about their child. An African-American and a Caucasian researcher interviewed a group of parents from different racial backgrounds randomly assigned to either researcher. Each group’s interview responses were compared for the quality and quantity of information provided in order to see …

Capstone: Women, Addiction, And Gender-Sensitive Treatment: A Review Of The Literature, Rae L. Rabideau Aug 2016

Capstone: Women, Addiction, And Gender-Sensitive Treatment: A Review Of The Literature, Rae L. Rabideau

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Historically, substance abuse treatment and research was centered on a male model. Only more recently has research demonstrated that women and men’s rates of substance use have become more similar (McPherson, Casswell, & Pledger, 2004). Gender-responsive and trauma-informed treatment programs for women were not introduced until the 1990s and 2000s. The purposes of this review are (1) to emphasize the prevalence of co-occurring mental illness among women with substance use disorders (SUDs), (2) to demonstrate the need for substance abuse treatment that addresses the unique and specific needs of women, and (3) to highlight the need for further research on …

Entrepreneurship As Empowerment: How Women Are Redefining Work, Charlynn Odahl Aug 2016

Entrepreneurship As Empowerment: How Women Are Redefining Work, Charlynn Odahl

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The number of women who are entrepreneurs in the United States has steadily risen since the 1970s and today women found almost half of all new companies. For women, creating their own companies through entrepreneurship may be a way to reject existing work settings, where existing setting and gender dynamics may limit their advancement, creativity, or flexibility. Indeed, entrepreneurship may serve as a form of empowerment to enable women to pursue greater control over their lives. Yet research on the lived experience of this population is limited, with few studies examining the lived experience of this important group. Also, existing …

Effects Of Religious Participation On Negative Mental Health Symptoms Among Low-Income, Urban African American Adolescents, Alfonso L. Floyd Aug 2016

Effects Of Religious Participation On Negative Mental Health Symptoms Among Low-Income, Urban African American Adolescents, Alfonso L. Floyd

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

African American adolescents living in low-income, urban neighborhoods are at high risk for developing psychological problems due to increased exposure to urban stressors. Given the complexity and chronic nature of these stressors, protective factors such as involvement in one’s religious institution may protect adolescents from harmful stressors associated with living in urban, low-income neighborhoods. This thesis sought to examine whether religious participation is an effective moderator of the relation between urban stressful life experiences and internalizing/externalizing psychological outcomes among low-income, urban African American adolescents. Two dimensions of religious participation, organizational and non-organizational, were examined as potential moderators of the effect …

Dementia In Prison: An Argument For Training Correctional Officers, Rachele Vogel Aug 2016

Dementia In Prison: An Argument For Training Correctional Officers, Rachele Vogel

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Dementia is a significant public health problem that is occurring behind bars. However, the number of inmates suffering from this disease is unknown (Feczko, 2014). Current research has exposed a serious gap in correctional health care for older adults, and correctional institutions are being encouraged to make changes to better address the needs of this population (Fellner, 2012; OIG, 2016; Williams, Stern, Mellow, Safer, & Greifinger, 2012b). The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness to the aging problem behind bars and respond to the identified need for additional training for custodial staff (correctional, parole, and probation officers). Training …

Center Of Attention: A Qualitative Study Of The Responses Of Lgbq Students To A Graduate-Level Lgbtq Diversity Training Course, Shoshana N. Aal

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The focus of this study is to examine the difficult situations LGBQ students experience as they complete a training course on LGBTQ issues at a predominantly non-LGBQ doctoral-level psychology program. Questions have arisen over the use of a diversity training course in preparing graduate students for their future as psychologists. Since diversity training courses are currently mandatory for APA accredited graduate psychology programs and are the primary means of training students for treating a diverse array of clients, it is important to ensure that these courses are effective for all graduate students. The purpose of this pilot study is to …

A Case Study Using The Biopsychosocial Vulnerability-Stress Model As A Framework To Understand The Incarceration Experience, Annette T. Maruca Aug 2016

A Case Study Using The Biopsychosocial Vulnerability-Stress Model As A Framework To Understand The Incarceration Experience, Annette T. Maruca

Journal for Evidence-based Practice in Correctional Health

In the United States, the Center for Disease Control estimates that about 80% of incarcerated inmates have a substance abuse problem. More than one fourth of inmates are in prisons because of drug related arrests. Additionally, many inmates have cooccurring mental illness disorders as well as health related issues. A multiple (four) case study design was used to explore the association between co-occurring diagnoses, antisocial traits and challenging behaviors within the incarcerated population. The analysis revealed that the four co-occurring diagnoses studied did contribute to poor health outcomes. Study findings suggest that there is a great need to create services …

Policies And Professional Development: An Oil Boom’S Effect On Rural Schools And Teachers, Vincent Genareo

The Rural Educator

In 2008, Western North Dakota experienced an extraordinary energy boom, creating waves of new residents seeking employment in the lucrative oil fields. Resultantly, many communities in the area, which were almost exclusively isolated and rural, dramatically changed. The purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to investigate the experiences of school staff in two rural schools within the North Dakota oil boom region. Data were teacher and administrator interviews with 15 participants and classroom observations. The findings indicated that teachers faced three key challenges in their classrooms as a result of the population influx, including: changing educational space, student academic …

Introducing Self-Advocacy Skills To Transition Age Youth, Monique Y. Martinez Aug 2016

Introducing Self-Advocacy Skills To Transition Age Youth, Monique Y. Martinez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Background

Transition age youth (TAY) are individuals transitioning from youth to adulthood (ages 14 to 24). TAY are individuals with emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities who cycle through the justice or foster care system, or are homeless and use social services (California Mental Health Planning Council [CMHPC], 2009; Mandarino, 2014). About 47.1 million young adults (14 to 24 years old) live in the United States; four million are 14-year olds, and by the time the 14-year-olds are 24 less than 100% will make an effort in successfully transitioning to adulthood, five to seven percent will reach age 25 without successfully …

Into The Depths Of Reflexivity And Back Again—When Research Mirrors Personal Experience: A Personal Journey Into The Spaces Of Liminality, Katherine Janzen

The Qualitative Report

The context of this paper surrounds my Master’s thesis which was written in 2010 related to recovering crack cocaine addicted mothers who had lost custody of their children. Every qualitative thesis has a story attached to it—an impetus for engaging in the research. When the research combines sensitive topics and the research mirrors the experience of the researcher, decisions must be made considering the research processes and methods. This paper explores the reflexive processes that were employed in the 10 months preceding taking my first thesis course. Using the preface of my reflexive journal as data, three themes arose from …
