This qualitative study conducted by a community-research partnership used multiple types of data collection to examine variables relevant for LGBTQ older adults who wished to age in place in their urban Denver neighborhood. Focus groups, interviews, and a town hall meeting were used to identify barriers and supports to aging in place. Participants (N=73) primarily identified as lesbian or gay, aged 50–69, and lived with a partner. Ageism, heterosexism, and/or cisgenderism emerged as cross-cutting themes that negatively impact access to healthcare, housing, social support, home assistance and legal services. Resilience from weathering a lifetime of discrimination was identified as a …

Persistence To Graduation: Does Financial Aid Matter?, Mary E. Anderson, Noran L. Moffett
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
This mixed methods research study used a QUAN-QUAL Model to examine the impact that various factors have on student persistence to graduation in postsecondary education. A documentary research approach was used to collect existing data for first-time full-time freshmen in the Fall 2008 Cohort who graduated within six years at a private Historically Black College or University. A correlational research design was employed to determine if a significant relationship existed between the dependent variables—Persistence to Graduation within Six Years and Final GPA at Time of Degree Completion and independent variables. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to describe, summarize, and …

Women’S Experiences With Prenatal Care: A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring The Influence Of The Social Determinants Of Health, Karen A. D'Angelo, Janelle K. Bryan, Brenda Kurz
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background & Purpose: Racial and ethnic disparities pervade birth outcomes in the United States and the state of Connecticut. While Connecticut’s infant mortality rate is less than the national average, rates for the state’s Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino communities exceed it. This study explored how prenatal care in Connecticut may be enhanced to address these disparities.
Methods: In spring 2013, seven focus groups and two semi-structured interviews were conducted (n=47). Participants also self-administered brief surveys. Recruited by local service providers, participants were 18 or older, pregnant and/or in the first year post-partum at the time. Most self-identified as …
Helping Navigate The Complex Web Of Community Medicine: How Dedicated Social Services Support In The Ed Can Prevent Unnecessary Ed Visits And Hospital Readmissions, Adam Kennah
Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
A hospital's Emergency Department (ED) serves as its front door to the community. The vast majority of admitted patients present initially to the ED, and even more still begin and end their hospital visit in the ED. A hospital's ED will deal with every societal ill facing that community. However, most hospitals reserve dedicated Social Service resources to admitted patients who have had prolonged inpatient hospital stays. EDs around the country are being overburdened with patients who present to the ED for non-emergent conditions. Access to community based healthcare is daunting even for well-connected individuals. It can be downright impenetrable …

Pornography: Masquerading As Fantasy, Producing Reality, Iris N. Vincent
Pornography: Masquerading As Fantasy, Producing Reality, Iris N. Vincent
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Our society believes that the social practices within the pornography industry are not important enough to be addressed. Indeed, as Gail Dine notes in Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality, “what is surprising is how many people, even those who do not like porn, insist that the carefully constructed images that are formulaically scripted and produced by the multibillion-dollar porn industry belong in the realm of sexual fantasy, not reality” (100). Problems arise from the belief that the social practices intrinsic to porn—racism, creating dirty sexualities associated with women, and popular video searches depicting “forced sex”—exist within a …

Unlocking Young Minds: An Examination Of Minority Mental Health In The Juvenile Justice System, Brandie Bentley
McNair Scholars Research Journal
A substantial number of minority youth in the juvenile justice system have mental health issues, and many do not have access to necessary mental health services and support. This paper is an extended review of literature that examines present racial disparities in the juvenile justice system and further, explores the disproportionate racial and ethnic differences in mental health service utilization prior to, during, and after involvement in the corrections system. Additionally, this paper will discuss contributing factors that influence minority youth interaction with mental health services, including federal policy, community resources, and socioeconomic status. Based on the findings of this …
