Empower Generation: Monitoring And Evaluation Report, Ashraf Hammad, Clarissa Nguyen, Hannah Girardeau Oct 2016

Empower Generation: Monitoring And Evaluation Report, Ashraf Hammad, Clarissa Nguyen, Hannah Girardeau

Miller Center Fellowship

Over thirty percent of households in Nepal lack access to electricity. Most families utilize kerosene, candles, and traditional biomass to light their homes, cook food, and study. With an unemployment rate of forty-six percent, Nepal’s economy offers limited opportunities for its citizens. Barriers to economic opportunity for Nepalese women are pronounced. Through the sale of reliable and affordable solar lanterns and energy systems, Empower Generation promotes women’s economic empowerment by eradicating energy poverty through autonomous, women-led clean energy businesses.

To document Empower Generation’s social impact in Nepal, we conducted 36 semi-structured qualitative interviews with women entrepreneurs (henceforth solar CEOs), sales …

Improving Heart Failure Management Utilizing A Chronic Disease Clinic Model, Regina Sawyer

DNP and Student Works

Chronic diseases are currently the leading cause of preventable death and disability worldwide. Clinical prevention disease-specific interventions designed with a population health management approach offer solutions. The goal was to determine the impact of follow-up care provided at a nurse practitioner led chronic disease management clinic (CDMC) on 30-day post-acute outcomes of the systolic heart failure (HF) population as compared to those who received usual care (UC). The CDMC utilizes an interprofessional model of care with a self-care management approach. A retrospective chart review was conducted on 72 patients to obtain 30-day hospital readmission, mortality, and ED utilization rates for …

Forgotten Memories Of A Social Justice Education: Difficult Knowledge And The Impossibilities Of School And Research, Debbie Sonu

Publications and Research

This paper is about memory, the elusive process of remembering and of an encounter between a researcher and a participant who after five years reunited to remember. The object under study is a high school social justice curriculum with a central focus on the development of social action projects. Grounded in Pitt and Britzman’s work on difficult knowledge, this paper asks: What do 10th grade students who spent four years attending a school committed to the Freirian principles of political engagement remember about their high school experience? Past and recent interviews are woven together to surface three emergent lines of …

The Disability-Diversity Disconnect: Redefining The Role Of Student Disability Within The Postsecondary Environment, Katherine C. Aquino Oct 2016

The Disability-Diversity Disconnect: Redefining The Role Of Student Disability Within The Postsecondary Environment, Katherine C. Aquino

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The current understanding of student disability continues to be misperceived as a form of impairment, rather than as a part of student diversity within the higher education environment. Although nearly one in ten college students have a documented disability affecting cognitive, physical, or psychological functioning, stigmatization of students with disabilities continues to occur in the postsecondary environment. The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a perceived difference in academic and social inclusion within the postsecondary environment for students with and without disabilities. Guided by the theory of intersectionality, minority group model, and social model of disability, …

The Construction Of Citizenship Through Musical Performance In Toronto’S Settlement Houses, 1930-1939, Deanna Yerichuk Oct 2016

The Construction Of Citizenship Through Musical Performance In Toronto’S Settlement Houses, 1930-1939, Deanna Yerichuk

Music Faculty Publications

Throughout the 1930s, Toronto’s social settlement houses hosted various musical performances by and for the immigrant and working-class residents of Toronto’s poorest neighbourhoods. Given their overarching project of civic betterment, the performances became sites not only to validate the social success of musical work, but also to enact musically notions of citizenship. Within the settlement music schools, benefit concerts and pupil recitals featured conservatory-style music performances, which articulated Western European Art Music to an Anglo-Celtic Protestant norm for citizenship. However, annual spring festivals shifted notions of citizenship somewhat by celebrating the various cultures of immigrants through music and dance.

A course in scholarly communications in the digital age recently introduced at one such program includes an invitation to aspiring administrators to study the contributions of the library to the ways that faculty members are coming to understand and capitalize on new technologies in teaching, research, and career development. The library is represented in the course in its traditional and new roles. It is an essential campus location for attention to what technological change means for …

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt Oct 2016

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the beliefs and practices of Chinese Christians and their American missionary counterparts in the Republic of China (1912-1949). Between the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the rise of the People's Republic, the Chinese people seriously reexamined politics, religion, and their relationship with the West. Many scholars claim that Chinese people could not completely understand and accept Christianity due to insurmountable cultural differences. I would argue religious misunderstanding did not befall our historical subjects the Chinese Christians; rather misunderstanding has plagued the modern scholar. Misunderstanding did not arise from a centuries old cultural mindset. Instead, Sino-Christianity conformed …

Women’S Perceptions Of The Usefulness Of Group Music Therapy In Addictions Recovery, Susan Gardstrom, Abigail Klemm, Kathleen M. Murphy Oct 2016

Women’S Perceptions Of The Usefulness Of Group Music Therapy In Addictions Recovery, Susan Gardstrom, Abigail Klemm, Kathleen M. Murphy

Department of Music Faculty Publications

This study represents our attempt to uncover aspects of group music therapy that women with addictions perceive as useful toward recovery – factors that have yet to be clearly identified in existing literature. Women in residential treatment for addictions to heroin and other substances were surveyed following group music therapy sessions involving vocal and instrumental re-creation, listening, and improvisation. Qualitative content analysis of data revealed four major findings. We learned that treatment is, in fact, seen as useful by these particular women and that Yalom’s theory provides a meaningful framework for identifying, understanding, and fostering mechanisms within the group music …

Language Diversity And Leadership Effectiveness, Deborah Oliverio-Olivieri

International Journal of Leadership and Change

This article addresses whether language diversity is relevant in leadership effectiveness. The research employed mixed methodology in a two-phase study examining language diversity and leadership effectiveness in the U.S. labor market using the language-as-resource (LAR) conceptual framework (Ruiz, 1984). The first phase analyzed 2010 General Social Survey data using proxy variables describing the relationship between languages other than English (LOTE) and occupational achievement. The second phase explored the role of LOTE in the leadership function with a focus group discussion. Insight about language diversity and leadership effectiveness was captured, with five themes emerging from the focus group discussion. This research …

Social Participation And Life Satisfaction Among Widowed Older Adults In China, Yawen Li, Ling Xu, Joohong Min, Iris Chi, Bin Xie

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

Aim: Little is known about how widowed older adults in China adjust during widowhood. This paper examines the relationship between their changes in social participation following spousal loss and their reported life satisfaction. Methods: Using two-wave (2000 and 2006) national representative data from China, we regressed measures of widowhood status, changes of social participation, health function, financial strain as well as living arrangement on life satisfaction after adjusting for baseline life satisfaction and other sociodemographic variables. Results: Increased social participation was related to higher levels of life satisfaction. This study did not find evidence that individuals who experienced widowhood would …
