An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Survivor Of Suicide Support Group Facilitator Scale: Identifying Meaningful Factors For Group Facilitation And Outcomes, Rebecca L. Sanford

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Support groups for suicide loss survivors are a relatively common resource used by those who are left to cope in the aftermath of a suicide death. Though descriptive studies have been used to provide an overview of support groups in the past, there have been no efforts to understand nuances of these groups and the impact of these groups and differing facilitation styles on the bereavement experience for attendees. This study explores primary data collected between March 2015 and December 2015 with a sample of 138 survivor of suicide loss support group facilitators in the United States and several other …

The Helping Profession : Can Pro Bono Lawyers Make Sick Children Well?, Lorne Sossin

Articles & Book Chapters

"Can pro bono lawyers make sick children well? Surprisingly, the answer might be yes. Or at least pro bono lawyers can improve patients’ experiences and health outcomes for families caught up in the hospital system. ... a pioneering initiative in Boston to locate legal clinics in hospitals. Word of this experiment reached Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO), an organization active in referring hospital cases to lawyers willing to take on pro bono cases. The benefits of coordinating such cases through a hospital-based pro bono clinic were clear, and the Family Legal Health Program, renamed PBLO at SickKids, was born."

Do The Perceptions Of Supervisory Working Alliance Mediate The Relation Between Perceived Supervisors' Multicultural Competence And Trainees' Multicultural Counseling Self-Efficacy?, Arthur Ritmeester

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study tested whether the relation between supervisory multicultural competence (SMC), as perceived by the supervisee, and multicultural counseling self-efficacy (MCSE) was partially mediated by the supervisory working alliance (SWA). This study was conducted in response to (a) a mismatch in previous research between the operationalization of MCSE and the underlying theorizing, and (b) inconsistent results in previous research about the relation between the SWA and counseling self-efficacy development. Participants were 182 health service psychologist trainees in the United States receiving supervision at the time of data collection.

A Qualitative Analysis Of Clinician Attitudes And Experiences Learning And Implementing Transdiagnostic Evidence-Based Practices For Eating Disorders, Jennifer Marie Oswald

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Clinician experiences with the implementation of new practices are important factors in facilitating the use of new treatment models and evidence-based practices (EBPs). As such, they provide crucial information to behavioral health dissemination and implementation research. Qualitative interviewing allows researchers to learn from clinician experiences with greater depth and nuance. The present study qualitatively analyzed 8 clinicians’ experiences with the implementation of a new transdiagnostic treatment model for eating disorders (ED) at an intensive residential treatment center. Participating clinicians completed a semi-structured interview based on constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), an organizing framework with demonstrated utility …

U.S. child welfare services provides children who cannot be cared for by their families with out-of-home (OOH) care, which is temporary residential care outside of a child’s original home. Economic factors are critical in making consistent OOH placement decisions due to their relationship with child development and safety.

Teacher Educators' Use Of Research-Based Literature In Their Pedagogical Practice, Leigh Yannuzzi Jan 2016

Teacher Educators' Use Of Research-Based Literature In Their Pedagogical Practice, Leigh Yannuzzi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Teacher education programs are situated at a critical point of intersection between the worlds of P-12 education, higher education, and educational policy. However, description and analysis of teacher educator programs, and specifically teacher educator practice, has yet to consider the role research literature plays in faculty work with pre-service teachers. This study provides an exploratory examination of knowledge dissemination in teacher education and analyzes mechanisms for, challenges to, and influences on the use of research literature with pre-service teachers. It contributes to scholarship by providing new knowledge about how teacher education faculty use the dissemination mechanism of course syllabi to …

Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study expanded the application of attachment theory, referred to as workplace attachment theory in this study, to investigate worker behavior, principally in relation to retention and turnover among social workers in a Veteran health care sector agency. Interdisciplinary collaboration, including whether it was related to workplace attachment, was also a significant feature. Three main aims were to identify (i) workplace attachment experiences; (ii) relational, social and physical contingencies that affected workplace attachment security; and (iii) the extent to which workplace attachment is influenced by interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a sample of social workers, a mixed methods research design involving a …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Previous research has confirmed that neighborhood level social factors (e.g. crime, safety) present chronic stressors that increase risk for depression in residents of economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. U.S. Latinos experience higher levels of poverty and thus are more likely to live in poor neighborhoods. In this study it was hypothesized that adult Latina women who reported (1) higher levels of worry regarding the general safety of their household children in the neighborhood, (2) higher levels of worry regarding influence of bad friends on their household children, and (3) higher levels of worry regarding their household children being exposed to drugs and …

Asymmetry Between Behavioral And Physiological Responses To Stress In Children And The Role Of Depressive Symptoms, Stephanie Emhoff Jan 2016

Asymmetry Between Behavioral And Physiological Responses To Stress In Children And The Role Of Depressive Symptoms, Stephanie Emhoff

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research indicates that asymmetry between behavioral and physiological indicators of stress is associated with impairment in physical and psychological health, which may be particularly problematic for child development. The present study examines the impact of depressive symptoms on the relation between behavioral and physiological responses to stress in a sample of 49 youth (ages 9-12). During exposure to an in-lab psychosocial stressor, two laboratory personnel coded participant stress behaviors. These behaviors were later categorized into factors through an exploratory factor analysis. To assess for reactivity in physiological stress response systems, saliva samples were collected at baseline and following the stressor …

Treaty Commitment And The Reconstruction Of Social Relations Among States, Youcheer Kim Jan 2016

Treaty Commitment And The Reconstruction Of Social Relations Among States, Youcheer Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Does states’ treaty commitment promote the inter-state socialization? A gap exists in the existing constructivist International Relations literature as to which agents could promote the internalization of constitutive beliefs through which process. This project seeks to illuminate whether states’ treaty commitments have promoted the inter-state socialization in three dimensions: (1) the convergence of voting patterns in the UN General Assembly (2) the convergence of state practices in territorial disputes (3) the emergence of rules-oriented domestic governance. I draw on classical sociology, public law theory, the English School theory, and the Transnational Legal Process theory to develop the Social Theory of …

Accessing Alternative Response Services : A Multi-Level Examination Of Family And Community Characteristics On Racial Equity, Tana D. J. Connell Jan 2016

Accessing Alternative Response Services : A Multi-Level Examination Of Family And Community Characteristics On Racial Equity, Tana D. J. Connell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although research has identified factors associated with child welfare involvement, less attention has been given to how Black families are assigned to types of child welfare services. The advent of alternative response pathways allows child protective workers to assign child abuse prevention services to families based on the type and seriousness of the maltreatment, history of prior reports and age of the child. Given the history of disparate outcomes in child welfare for Black families and the fact that alternative response pathways are a promising approach for improving outcomes for families, this study examines the effect of family and community …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Adult Day Care On Alleviating Caregiver Stress/Burden, Lessep Duncan, Joan Bowla, Rosena Tanis

Florida Public Health Review

Though not extensive, the literature points to the efficacy of Adult Day Care (ADC) in alleviating stress on caregivers in several and differing ways. In line with this evidence, the findings from the evaluation of Northwest Focal Point’s (NWFP) ADC program conducted by the Florida Atlantic University Evaluation Team indicates that ADC provides necessary relief and reduces the strain of caregiving on caregivers. Two measurement instruments: one to measure the level of caregiver strain and one to measure the effectiveness of ADC in alleviating this strain comprising five dimensions of caregiving strain and five dimensions of ADC impact in reducing …

Associations Between Health And Academic Success At A Florida University: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study, Jessica Weissman, Sharice Preston, Elena Sebekos, Willmarie Latorre, Bandar Alsaif, Karl Krupp, William Darrow

Florida Public Health Review

The aims of the study were to explore the associations between college students’ perception of their overall physical and psychological health and four measures of academic performance. College students (N = 265) completed a 65-item Web-based survey in a university’s student health services building during the spring 2015 semester. Poorer psychological health was associated with seriously considering dropping out of college and missing more classes during the current school year “due to physical or psychological health reasons.” Poorer physical health was associated with enrollment in more credit hours. Students who reported a grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 missed more …

The Empty Chair Appointment, Jody Long, Ken Sakauye, Khaja Chisty, John Upton

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The objective was to test an intervention to reduce failed rates for psychiatric appointments. We collected data for this study of the characteristics of patients who missed appointments from March 2011 through September 2012. A phone triage assessment intervention was implemented to address chronic first-time failed attendance appointments (N = 78). The main reason for failed appointments was transportation difficulties. The first-time appointment show rate increased after implementing an assessment intervention. Phone assessment intervention was practical and may improve nonattendance for psychiatric appointments. The discussion reflects speculations about causes and possible measures to make services more accessible.

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In reflecting on the recent educational change in Ethiopian higher education (HE), this article explores the nature of undergraduate curriculum reform in relation to student-centered pedagogy and continuous assessment method. To this end, the article uses a qualitative case study design collecting primary data from interviews with 4 senior managers and 4 education quality experts, and a focus-group with 6 teachers, and exploring secondary sources. The result shows that the forces, triggering curriculum reform are mostly external providing little room for internal factors and the development of curriculum from within the institution. A Critical Analysis Of Acculturation, Sociocultural Pressures, Body Image, And Disordered Eating Among Asian Immigrants In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Lexa Watroba, Jayne Eckley, Arlette Ngoubene.Atioky Jan 2016

A Critical Analysis Of Acculturation, Sociocultural Pressures, Body Image, And Disordered Eating Among Asian Immigrants In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Lexa Watroba, Jayne Eckley, Arlette Ngoubene.Atioky

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Asian immigrants are an emerging ethnic minority in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Previous literature has examined how immigration to Western countries and the sociocultural pressures associated with a new host country, particularly the United States, impacts Asian immigrants’ body image and dietary regimen. However, there has been less of a focus on the level of acculturation of Asian immigrants in Canada and Australia and its relationship with body image dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and sociocultural pressures. The paucity of cross-cultural analysis and the inconclusive knowledge of how acculturation and sociocultural pressures may serve as predictors of poor body image …

Siblinghood Through Disability Studies Perspectives: Diversifying Discourse And Knowledge About Siblings With And Without Disabilities, Ariella Meltzer, John Kramer Jan 2016

Siblinghood Through Disability Studies Perspectives: Diversifying Discourse And Knowledge About Siblings With And Without Disabilities, Ariella Meltzer, John Kramer

All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications

Research about siblings where one has a disability has historically focused on the psychological outcomes of siblings of people with disabilities and has very rarely asked people with disabilities about their sibling relationships. This research focus represents the common individualizing approach and under-representation of people with disabilities that disability studies has argued against. Tracing the history of research about siblings and disability through de/institutionalization and towards current broader theories in disability studies, this article suggests that a range of disability studies perspectives can usefully de-individualize and expand research about siblings where one has a disability. Through examples of how materialist, …

Knowledge Translation And Support For Individuals And Families (Bringing Employment First To Scale, Issue No. 5), Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications

With the persistently low competitive employment rate for working-age people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), a main focus area for the field of disability research has been on the interaction between the individual and the service system. Yet we know much less about the interaction between systems and families around employment. Family engagement is key to successful employment and life planning, often leading individuals with disabilities on the path to employment when family members serve as role models for work ethic and behavior. Family members may also provide logistical support, including coaching and advice, help with planning and organizing …
