News Stories Of Intimate Partner Violence: An Experimental Examination Of Participant Sex, Perpetrator Sex, And Violence Severity On Seriousness, Sympathy, And Punishment Preferences, Matthew W. Savage, Jennifer A. Scarduzio, Kate Lockwood Harris, Kellie E. Carlyle, Sarah E. Sheff
Health Policy Publications
This study experimentally examines the effects of participant sex, perpetrator sex, and severity of violence on perceptions of intimate partner violence (IPV) seriousness, sympathy toward the victim, and punishment preferences for the perpetrator. Participants (N = 449) were randomly assigned to a condition, exposed to a composite news story, and then completed a survey. Ratings of seriousness of IPV for stories with male perpetrators were significantly higher than ratings of seriousness for stories with female perpetrators. Men had significantly higher sympathy for female victims in any condition than for male victims in the weak or strong severity of violence …
Exploring The Coping Strategies Of Female Urban High School Seniors On Academic Successes As It Relates To Bullying, Brenda Elaine Brooks-Turner
Exploring The Coping Strategies Of Female Urban High School Seniors On Academic Successes As It Relates To Bullying, Brenda Elaine Brooks-Turner
ETD Archive
Bullying has become a worldwide problem of pandemic proportion and degree. (Thomas, Bolen, Heister & Hyde, 2010). In the United States over thirty-five percent of school-aged students were directly involved in bullying incidents. Tragic news stories about suicides and school violence raised awareness about the importance of addressing this global issue (Van Der Zande, 2010). To date reports further indicate that more females are involved in indirect relational bullying than males. Unfortunately, as technology becomes more and more accessible, relational bullying has become one of the fastest growing epidemics (Brinson, 2005; Rigby & Smith, 2011).
Current research explanations were limited …

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi
Communication Studies Department Publications
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of students regarding what was effective about the way in which the online lectures were structured in an upper level online organizational communication course. Student evaluations from 27 students were used, with questions focused upon the structure of lectures in the online course as compared to other online courses and to traditional classrooms. Qualitative analyses reveal the use of the trifecta approach, the use of audio voice-overs with PowerPoint slides, the concise nature of lectures, the ability to review them, and the use of key points as significant to student …

An Examination Of Quality Of Life Of Parents Of Adult Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christina Noel Marsack
An Examination Of Quality Of Life Of Parents Of Adult Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christina Noel Marsack
Wayne State University Dissertations
Previous research on parental caregivers has focused primarily on caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, rather than focusing specifically on parents of adult children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Most research on ASD has centered on parents of young children with this diagnosis, but not on parents of adult children with ASD. Understanding the experiences of parents caring for adult children with ASD is important given the increase in the prevalence of individuals with ASD and the lack of information regarding parents of adult children with ASD. A nonexperimental, quantitative, correlational design was used to examine effects …
Factors Associated With Primary Care Providers' Willingness To Deliver Routine And Transition Care To Transgender Individuals, Deirdre Aisling Shires
Factors Associated With Primary Care Providers' Willingness To Deliver Routine And Transition Care To Transgender Individuals, Deirdre Aisling Shires
Wayne State University Dissertations
Transgender individuals report being denied healthcare services, but very little is known about primary care providers’ (PCP) willingness to deliver either routine or transition care to the transgender community. The purpose of this study is to examine PCP willingness to deliver routine care, continue a hormone therapy (HT) regimen initiated by another provider, and initiate HT for transgender patients using a theoretical framework informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior and Intergroup Contact Theory. The study sample was all family medicine, internal medicine, and women’s health providers in a large integrated Midwestern health system. Eligible participants were emailed a unique …

"A Barrier With Roses Growing Out Of It”: An Interrogation Of The Relationship Between A Service-Based Nonprofit Organization And Its Clients, Deborah Dee Sellnow-Richmond
Wayne State University Dissertations
Service-based nonprofit organizations exist to meet needs otherwise unmet within the for-profit sector. This study investigates women’s decision to visit a specific healthcare site and the relationship they develop with their reproductive healthcare organizations. Focusing on women’s decision to choose a healthcare organization that focuses solely on reproductive healthcare and access to care, regardless of socioeconomic status, emphasizes the unique relationship women, particularly women of marginalized status, have with reproductive care in the United States. Importantly, these experiences provide the means to examine the broader context of women’s reproductive healthcare access among marginalized communities and the role of nonprofit organizations. …

Women Leading To Make A Difference: An Inside Look At A Strength-Based Home Visiting Program In Rural Appalachia, Kathy J. Bialk
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Maternal Infant Outreach Worker Program (MIHOW) is a strength-based home visitation program that uses trained lay women indigenous to the community to mentor and teach parents who are economically disadvantaged or live in geographically isolated areas about healthy and positive pregnancy and parenting up until the child turns age three. This qualitative case study conducted in rural Appalachia at two program sites examined how women involved in the West Virginia MIHOW program – program leaders, home visitors, and mothers – came to recognize their strengths and use them to achieve life aspirations. In addition, this study explored how MIHOW …

Immigrants And Refugees As Vulnerable Populations: Considerations For School Based Health Centers, Gaïa D. C. Oliver
Immigrants And Refugees As Vulnerable Populations: Considerations For School Based Health Centers, Gaïa D. C. Oliver
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
School based health centers (SBHC) have been shown to benefit domestic populations both in terms of bettering health and bettering academics while being effective over the long term. There is, however, lacking evidence on how they impact immigrant and refugee communities, which are some of the most vulnerable United States communities in terms of health risks. Through discussion of literature, this paper defines and reviews the criteria for vulnerable populations and explains how this term applies to immigrant and refugee populations. School based health centers and their documented health and academic benefits for domestic high risk populations are discussed and …

Transnational Public Relations In Postcolonial Spaces: Making Space For Other Discourses In The Afghan Public Sphere, Arshia Anwer
Transnational Public Relations In Postcolonial Spaces: Making Space For Other Discourses In The Afghan Public Sphere, Arshia Anwer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation takes up Wakefield’s (1992) call to build theory for international practices of public relations activities. It offers a transnational approach to public relations, providing a theoretical foundation and a case study for the conceptualization of transnational public relations. The theory and practice of transnational public relations proposed in this dissertation incorporates a rhetorical approach that is sensitive to the social, political, cultural, religious and gender issues inherent in postcolonial spaces. Eschewing a rhetorical approach based on civil society discourses or democratic institutional discourses, this project is attentive to listening and responding to a multiplicity of voices in incorporating …

2010-2016 Archived Programs
Welcome to the 2016 Walden University Research Symposium. The Walden University Research Symposium is an annual event that showcases research projects from our academic community, especially work by our recent graduates. The presentations at a symposium appear in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Using a roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers is available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. This year’s roundtable presenters are focused specifically on …

2015-2016 Social Change Review, Social Change Working Group
Social Change Impact Report
The 2015 Review of Social Change at Walden University identifies a number of initiatives that were put in place during 2015 to actualize and support the social change portion of the university mission. Many of these initiatives implemented proposals offered during the Special Emphasis Self-Study that was part of The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) reaccreditation project of 2012. One of the most important social change initiatives in 2015 emerged from discussions among Walden’s Board of Directors, president, and leadership teams, who agreed that Walden will move forward with development and implementation of a 5-year action plan to more fully realize …

Buying Sex On-Line From Girls: Ngo Representatives, Law Enforcement Officials, And Public Officials Speak Out About Human Trafficking—A Qualitative Analysis, Sriyani Tidball, Mingying Zheng, John W. Creswell
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Federal agencies report the high level of sex trafficking of minors in the United States. This trafficking often occurs on-line with the Internet. Pimps commonly advertise children for sexual exploitation online, and they search social networking sites for young victims. Thus, the high rate of trafficking minors and the increased use of technology have led to a need to better understand purchasing young girls for sex on-line. This qualitative study focused on learning from NGO representatives, law enforcement officials, and public officials their experiences about how men buy girls on-line for sex, and the words that the men use in …
A Critical Ethnography Of Difference, Boundaries Of Belonging, And Race In New Orleans Second Line Parades, Adriana Noemi Diaz
A Critical Ethnography Of Difference, Boundaries Of Belonging, And Race In New Orleans Second Line Parades, Adriana Noemi Diaz
Theses & ETDs
This thesis uses the frameworks of “doing difference” (West and Fenstermaker 1995) and “boundary work” (Lamont 2002) to examine how people construct categories of belonging in Second Line communities in New Orleans, Louisiana. While I use the concept of “doing difference” in this thesis to refer to the enactment and accomplishment of existing categories of difference, I use “boundary work” to refer to the performative acts through which individuals constitute categories of difference. Second Line is a public participatory parade local to New Orleans that stems from colonial gatherings in Congo Square. There are two main forms of Second Line …
Access And Ownership: An Empowerment Approach To Food Insecurity In Newtown, Sarasota, Paula R. Cooper
Access And Ownership: An Empowerment Approach To Food Insecurity In Newtown, Sarasota, Paula R. Cooper
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines how local activists and leaders of governmental and nongovernmental organizations address food insecurity in the Newtown neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida. Food insecure households are defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as those that have insufficient economic means or other resources to acquire enough food for their entire household. There are nine areas in Sarasota that have a high concentration of households that struggle with food insecurity. Newtown is one of these areas. This thesis adds to the existing literature on food insecurity by using empowerment as a theoretical framework to study programs designed to address …
Waiting For Godot In New Orleans: Continuing The Avant-Garde Project Through Access And Archive, Michael Valdez
Waiting For Godot In New Orleans: Continuing The Avant-Garde Project Through Access And Archive, Michael Valdez
Theses & ETDs
This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first, I posit the existence of two cultural trends, or “vectors”: the establishment and the anti-establishment, or corrective. At their intersections I argue are points of constructive conflict, manifesting in experimental progression in the medium of live performance, which recently includes Waiting for Godot in New Orleans, a cross-platform initiative. I argue that the 2007 performance continues the anti-establishment vector of avant-garde, politically charged, community minded manifestations. The second part is an exploration and exaltation of Paul Chan’s published performance archive, Waiting for Godot in New Orleans: A Field Guide, in …

Fostering Parent To Foster Child Relationships-One Play Session At A Time: Development Of A Workshop For Easing Transitions And Improving Behaviors, Marlo C. Broyles
MOT Student Capstones
This report includes a review of literature to support development of a workshop to teach strategies for building relationships between foster parents and the children in their care. A search of the literature included locating peer-reviewed, evidence-based literature demonstrating how behaviors exhibited by foster children can make relationship building with the foster parents difficult. Successful strategies from the literature was reviewed to find supporting evidence for creation of the workshop. The literature provided evidence that abused and neglected children demonstrate poor behaviors that will affect their development, contribute to attachment issues with family and peers, produce sensory deficits, and children …
