Biblical Hospitality: An Environment For Leader Development, Joanne L. Holz Feb 2016

Biblical Hospitality: An Environment For Leader Development, Joanne L. Holz

Doctor of Ministry

The Salvation Army in the southeastern United States is currently facing challenges with retention of its ordained leaders called Officers. Causes for post- commissioning defection center around the need for changes in the context in which training and learning occurs. This study examines the need for Biblical Hospitality as an environment that hosts transformational opportunities and creates the context needed for leadership development across the system and within individuals in the U. S. A. Southern Territory.

There is a return to Biblical Hospitality, which is finding its place in multiple areas of life with life-transforming opportunities and results. For the …

Professional Competence To Promote Resilience For Children Living In Poverty, Jenna M. Voss, Susan Lenihan Feb 2016

Professional Competence To Promote Resilience For Children Living In Poverty, Jenna M. Voss, Susan Lenihan

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Poverty has a tremendous impact on the educational results of all children, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. With targeted, evidence-based interventions during the first three years of life, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) professionals can protect children from the numerous risk factors which impede development. While EHDI professionals often serve children and families living in poverty, it remains the case that the professional preparation programs offer limited instruction and experience in how to best serve children and families living in poverty. The purpose of this study was to explore professional preparedness to serve children who …

Relationship Competency: An Exploration Of Training And Relationship Assessment In An Apa Doctoral Program, Jacquelyn M. Rodriguez Feb 2016

Relationship Competency: An Exploration Of Training And Relationship Assessment In An Apa Doctoral Program, Jacquelyn M. Rodriguez

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Relational competency is regarded as foundational to doctoral psychology training (Mangione & Nadkarni, 2010), yet defining this competency has proven to be an arduous and nebulous task. The connection between relationship competency and strong therapeutic alliance, combined with the lack of knowledge and research around effective assessment and training of the nontangible relational attitudes, knowledge, and skills begs for more research on the implementation of this competency. The aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between student therapists’ technique and relational characteristics and therapeutic alliance outcome during 10 therapy sessions. Participants were 24 first year doctoral students …

Displacement, Identity And Belonging For Ibyangin: The Personal Journey Of Transracial Korean-Born Adoptees, Jason D. Reynolds, Joseph G. Ponterotto, Christina Lecker Feb 2016

Displacement, Identity And Belonging For Ibyangin: The Personal Journey Of Transracial Korean-Born Adoptees, Jason D. Reynolds, Joseph G. Ponterotto, Christina Lecker

The Qualitative Report

The present study examined the lived experience (erlebnis) of adult transracial, Korean-born adoptees (Ibyangin; Yngvesson & Coutin, 2006) raised in the United States by White families. Long interviews (McCracken, 1988) were conducted with fourteen young adult (age 26-30) Korean-born adoptees in-person or by phone. The study was anchored in the constructivist-interpretivist research paradigm (Ponterotto, 2005) and utilized the phenomenological inquiry model (Moustakas, 1994) to explore the essence of the international transracial adoption experience. Two major clusters of meaning with additional subthemes were related to a) identity development, and b) decision to return to Korea. Limitations of the study are reviewed, …

The project is designed to breakdown the negative perceptions of black males and create a safe space for honest dialogue and healing. Winthrop University Galleries hosted an exhibit of this project in the Fall 2014 semester in conjunction with a larger roundtable discussion on …

Research in aviation fields has become increasingly important to institutions and their faculty. Expectations to conduct such research have escalated with tenure and employment decisions often hanging on evidence of research skill and advanced educational attainment. Considering the importance of research to aviation higher education, this study investigated how research skills are conveyed to undergraduate and graduate aviation students. Further, the subjects and methods of instruction were evaluated. This inquiry was guided by content analysis. To bolster the findings of this study, a series of interviews with program directors and faculty teaching research courses were conducted to explore faculty perceptions …

Embedding Inquiry-Based Learning Activities To Create A Research-Supportive Culture, Theresa P. Maue Feb 2016

Embedding Inquiry-Based Learning Activities To Create A Research-Supportive Culture, Theresa P. Maue

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Research, in its most elemental form, is the process of asking a question and searching systematically for an answer. Thus, it is inquiry-based. Embedding inquiry-based activities throughout the curriculum facilitates the creation of a research-supportive culture, the stated purpose of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Quality Enhancement Program. Inquirybased activities range from confirmation of known principles following an instructor-specified procedure, to independent formulation of questions and investigative procedures by the students themselves. They follow inductive methods and constructivist principles. Instructor preparation requires careful planning, with attention to learning objectives, resources required, and student resistance factors. Instructors must possess deep content knowledge and …

Education's Quest For The Golden Answer: The Need Continues For Critical Thinking, Bruce Rothwell Feb 2016

Education's Quest For The Golden Answer: The Need Continues For Critical Thinking, Bruce Rothwell

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

This paper addressed the need for critical thinking as an appropriate learning outcome for the majority of higher education classes. The paper reviewed critical thinking from a multi-disciplined perspective. A brief review of the history of critical thinking preceded a short discussion of the need. The main body of the paper addressed the reasons for a lack of critical thinking in today's classroom and centered blame on a failure of educators to take the time needed for adequate implementation and a long-standing false belief that there is one best answer to any given question. Finally, the paper addressed numerous approaches …

Acceptance Of Distance Learning Programs At The Graduate Level A Pilot Study, Marian C. Schultz, James T. Schultz, Stephen O'Brien Feb 2016

Acceptance Of Distance Learning Programs At The Graduate Level A Pilot Study, Marian C. Schultz, James T. Schultz, Stephen O'Brien

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

The number of Americans seeking college degrees is expanding at a rapid pace. To meet the challenge of the non-traditional student, one, who because of other commitments, cannot attend courses in a traditional campus setting, colleges and universities have instituted distance learning programs. There is little disagreement on the value of these programs in providing a service to students who cannot attend traditional classes. But at locations where students do have an option of attending a traditional course, or taking one through a distance learning approach, which will a student select? The study expanded the perceptions of the traditional versus …

Involving Adults In The Learning Of Mathematics, Walter R. Deckert Feb 2016

Involving Adults In The Learning Of Mathematics, Walter R. Deckert

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Preparing adults for the mathematics skills necessary for the twenty first century is a challenge. It is especially challenging if those adults have had past traumatic experiences learning mathematics. Involving students in the learning process involves more than the presentation of mathematical concepts by the teacher and the simple regurgitation of rote memorization by the students. It requires a concerted effort by both the teacher and the student. The teacher must present mathematical concepts that are inclusionary, challenging, in an environment created for learning, in class settings that are technologically advanced, and geared to the student's level. The student must …
