The Nature Of Kinship Care Relationships And Permanency Outcomes For Foster Children: Implications For Social Work Practice, Policy, And Research, Jolynne Batchelor May 2016

The Nature Of Kinship Care Relationships And Permanency Outcomes For Foster Children: Implications For Social Work Practice, Policy, And Research, Jolynne Batchelor

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

In recent history, kinship care has become the preferred alternative for placement of children in foster care as evidenced by its codification in federal and state policies. Though kinship caregivers tend to fare more poorly on socioeconomic factors than traditional foster and adoptive parents, children who experience kinship care tend to experience better safety and permanency than children in nonkin placements. The term “kinship” is most often broadly defined in child welfare and includes a child’s blood relatives and others who share no biological ties but have a close psychological relationship with the child. Yet, little is known to date …

Payday Lending: A Value-Critical Analysis Of Three State Solutions, Jocelyn Everett May 2016

Payday Lending: A Value-Critical Analysis Of Three State Solutions, Jocelyn Everett

Social Work Theses - Archive

Payday lending has been a topic of great debate in the US and other developed countries. While some argue that lenders prey on low income and minority populations and trap them in a cycle of debt, others maintain that payday loans fulfill an otherwise unmet need for those in unexpected financial distress. Furthermore, although a consensus has not yet been reached concerning why, there exists a population of payday loan borrowers who continue to roll over short-term loans in an effort to solve their long-term financial problems. This is of particular concern to the field of social work because as …

Preoperative Depression And Postopertive Outcomes In Older Adult Cardiac Surgery Patients, Alaina Michelle Tellson

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Depression following cardiac surgery has been reported in older adults; however, the evidence to date does not clearly specify the onset of depression and its relationship to cardiac surgery. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine the association between preoperative depression and selected postoperative outcomes in older adults following CABG surgery. The five selected postoperative outcomes were 30 day readmission rate, hospital length of stay, intensive care unit length of stay, ventilator time, and 30 day mortality. A sample size of 87 older adult cardiovascular surgery patients was selected for this study. Thirteen (14.9%) of the participants …

Perceptions And Choice Theory In Schools And Counseling, Ryan M. Schaller May 2016

Perceptions And Choice Theory In Schools And Counseling, Ryan M. Schaller

Counselor Education Capstones

The way individuals perceive events and situations has been shown to be as important, often more important, than the events or situations themselves (Schiff, 1981). Often times, individuals are oblivious to the impact that internal factors such as past experiences and biases have on behaviors and choices. In turn, external factors, such as triggers in the environment, can result in reactions as opposed to responses. These reactions may have negative consequences, as there is minimal, or no thought involved. For counselors, these consequences can influence the progress and well-being of clients as well as the perceptions others hold of the …

Expanding Interprofessional Learning Opportunities: How Dental Hygiene Administrators And Faculty Perceive Interprofessional Education, Cristina Casa

All Theses And Dissertations

The health care system has undergone transformation, implementing an interprofessional approach to patient care. Professionals have formed collaborative practice groups that effectively respond to the intricacies of today’s medical industry. Dental hygienists are underemployed in these teams. This has a direct effect on dental hygiene academia because education is the basis for practice. Interprofessional education (IPE) has been proposed as the strategy to adequately address this issue; however, many dental hygiene programs do not focus on shared teaching and learning.

This mixed methodology study documented the perspectives of dental hygiene administrators and faculty at higher education institutions in the Northeast …

College Students' Attitude Toward Single Mothers In Poverty, Rocco Placenti May 2016

College Students' Attitude Toward Single Mothers In Poverty, Rocco Placenti

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Poverty in the United States is a huge problem, and it becomes bigger each year, as millions of single mothers are the ones who are suffering the most. The debate on how to solve poverty has continued for a very long time. It has been fixed temporarily, but not completely remedied.

Literature: Attitudes are forecasters of how and why individuals take action in specific ways. Some people believe in social attributions (e.g., societal responsibility); others have confidence in individualistic attributions (e.g., a single person’s responsibility); and others rely on fatalistic attributions (e.g., luck). Individuals’ attitudes towards single mothers in poverty …

An Empirical Study Of Outcomes And Quality Indicators Between Accredited And Non-Accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs, William Murphy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Quality assurance of academic programs that lead to licensure or certification in a profession traditionally has been through the industry-recognized accreditation body. There have been a limited number of studies on whether accreditation is associated with better program quality and outcomes; the purpose of this study was to add to that body of literature by comparing accredited and non-accredited programs. The quality dimensions associated with the study are standards-related program inputs such as admissions criteria, faculty resources and qualifications, and outcomes, as reflected by clinical examination results and program completion rates.

Fostering Professional Quality Of Life In Nurses: An Online Curriculum, Kari Green May 2016

Fostering Professional Quality Of Life In Nurses: An Online Curriculum, Kari Green

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The nursing profession is based on compassion toward others, with inherent risks and rewards for nurses. The cost of caring is even more prevalent within the context of the current healthcare crisis. Despite implications at the personal, professional, and larger healthcare system level, little effort is being directed toward mitigating these negative effects. The efficacy of self-care and mindfulness practices is promising, yet succinct tools are not readily available. An online curriculum was created to promote awareness, provide evidence-based education, and encourage application of self-care and mindfulness practices for nursing students, practicing nurses, and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to help …
