Gardner-Webb Alumna Explored Several Majors To Determine Career Path, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

As a young girl, Megan Carscaddon, of Shelby, N.C., spent many hours on the campus of Gardner-Webb University with her father, Dr. David Carscaddon, a professor in the School of Psychology. “I vividly remember being the ball girl for the women’s basketball team in the ’90s,” Carscaddon recalled. “On summer breaks, my sisters and I would play in the empty classrooms while Daddy prepared syllabi for the next semester. We learned to swim in the pool on campus, went to football games and spent time in the library. Gardner-Webb has been a part of my life, for most of my …

Temporal Effects Of Distressed Housing On Early Childhood Risk Factors And Kindergarten Readiness, Claudia J. Coulton, Francisca García Cobián Richter, Robert L. Fischer, Youngmin Cho Jun 2016

Temporal Effects Of Distressed Housing On Early Childhood Risk Factors And Kindergarten Readiness, Claudia J. Coulton, Francisca García Cobián Richter, Robert L. Fischer, Youngmin Cho

Faculty Scholarship

Poor housing quality and housing crises have been linked to adverse outcomes for children. However, few studies have focused on the early childhood period or been able to pinpoint how the timing and duration of housing problems contributes to early educational success. This longitudinal study draws on linked administrative records from housing, education, social service and health agencies to examine the influence of exposure to housing neighborhood conditions since birth on school readiness of all children entering kindergarten over a four-year period in a big city school system. Using marginal structural models that properly account for dynamic housing and neighborhood …

Confessions Of A Media Literacy Scholar-Practitioner: Job Market Advantages, Research Agenda Challenges, And Theory-Driven Production, Christopher Boulton Jun 2016

Confessions Of A Media Literacy Scholar-Practitioner: Job Market Advantages, Research Agenda Challenges, And Theory-Driven Production, Christopher Boulton

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This essay explores how higher education’s move away from the liberal arts tradition of learning by thinking and towards more vocational “experiential” approaches has implications for media literacy educators’ career options, scholarly identities, and teaching strategies. Specifically, I consider my own negotiation of increasing administrative and student demands for “hands-on” production courses by confessing both my advantages on the job market and my post-hire challenges in articulating a clear research agenda. I then conclude with a case study of how I repurposed my scholar-practitioner identity and used critical theory to drive production by bringing film students into a cultural studies …

Perceptions Of Being A Woman And Strategies For Women’S Body Image Resilience, Lauren L. Mclean, Amanda C. Laguardia Jun 2016

Perceptions Of Being A Woman And Strategies For Women’S Body Image Resilience, Lauren L. Mclean, Amanda C. Laguardia

The Qualitative Report

Although the negative effects of female body objectification are well established, there is a lack of qualitative research examining how women can develop resiliency against body image issues and low self-esteem. Through the current phenomenological qualitative study, we sought to explore how participants defined being a woman, particularly a woman with healthy self-esteem. In addition, we explored several resiliency strategies, based on Choate’s (2005) theoretical model of body image resilience, that women could potentially use to combat some of the effects of objectification. Results indicated that female participants experience normative beliefs and gender expectations that a woman with a healthy …

Ageing And Long-Term Care Planning Perceptions Of Hispanics In The Usa: Evidence From A Case Study In New London, Connecticut, María Amparo Cruz-Saco, Mónika López-Anuarbe

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper explores the ageing attitudes and long-term care planning behavior of adult Hispanics in New London, Connecticut, a town with 30 thousand inhabitants that is rapidly ageing. We conducted six focus groups and had 37 participants share their ageing perceptions and long-term care needs. Our main findings suggest that informal care arrangements are vulnerable and unsustainable especially since women have historically and disproportionately provided most family eldercare even at their own personal and financial expense. Though male participants expected their female relatives to care for them when they age and need personal assistance, female participants did not necessarily expect …

Appreciative Co-Design: From Problem Solving To Strength-Based Re-Authoring In Social Design, Tasman Munro Jun 2016

Appreciative Co-Design: From Problem Solving To Strength-Based Re-Authoring In Social Design, Tasman Munro

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper outlines an approach to Social Design that departs the practice of design as ‘problem solving’ and advocates for Appreciative Co-design, an approach that seeks to nurture strengths and co-construct empowering stories that give life to living systems. As Social Designers we’re working with increasingly vulnerable people in immensely difficult circumstances, and sometimes their lives become constructed around a ‘problem story’. These participants can be difficult to engage in the co- design process, they can be resistant to change or find it difficult to envision positive future alternatives. And as Social Designers it’s now our role to shift their …

United We Stand: A Critique Of The Design Thinking Approach In Interdisciplinary Innovation, Fiona Maciver, Julian Malins, Julia Kantorovich, Aggelos Liapis

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There has been a recent upsurge in the promotion of ‘creative thinking’. The input of several disciplines is necessary to innovate new products and services. However, there remain many challenges to collaboration amongst creative and science-based disciplines. This paper examines disparities between designers and technologists when innovating and tackling problems. It is suggested that dominance of one party is likely to result in inadequate results. This paper seeks to explore how collaboration can be mediated by design thinking. A case study of designers and technologists working on a software development project is presented. The case study highlights challenges resulting from …

Designing The Unknown: Supervising Design Students Who Manage Mental Health Issues, Welby Ings Jun 2016

Designing The Unknown: Supervising Design Students Who Manage Mental Health Issues, Welby Ings

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Seneca in his Moral Essays said, ‘No great genius has ever existed without some touch of madness’ (1928, p. 284). When working with highly gifted designers, it is not uncommon to encounter such a connection. However, as supervisors we can often find ourselves navigating unstable territories with little pedagogical guidance. This article discusses some implications of working creatively with Design students who manage mental health conditions in a postgraduate environment in a New Zealand University. In doing so, it considers it reflects upon the research journeys of two candidates and the construction of responsive, creativity supportive environments developed to support …

Serious Play Strategies In The Design Of Kinetic And Wearable Devices, Lois Frankel, Ellen Hrinivich Jun 2016

Serious Play Strategies In The Design Of Kinetic And Wearable Devices, Lois Frankel, Ellen Hrinivich

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Encouraging spontaneous creativity is an on-going quest in design. Play embodies this. This paper builds on the concept of “serious play” as a design strategy for creating new and innovative ideas. It discusses a qualitative study involving six teams of designers, each generating initial concepts for wearable and interactive kinetic devices. It describes the playful interactions that emerged as a common strategy for their collaborative and creative ideation practices. It contributes features that further clarify the nature of serious play in relation to humour, role-playing scenarios, gestures, and multi-sensory involvement.

Total Marginality: Cumulative Marginality Among African American Students At A Predominantly White Institution, Marlon C. James, Kristin Kistner Hall, Vanessa Liles, Terra L. Williams, Sonia M. Marrero

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

This study examines the cumulative nature of marginality felt by African American undergraduates attending a Predominantly White institution (PWI). In-depth semi-structured interviews with ten African American college upperclassmen revealed the need for conceptualization of student marginality at PWIs. The participants detailed their exposure to varying levels of marginality in campus spaces, classrooms, course curriculum, residence halls, the community surrounding the institution, elements of their home environment, and interracial and intraracial interactions with students. This study moves beyond descriptive analyses (Feagin, Vera, & Imani 1996; Davis, Dias-Bowie, Greenberg, Klukken, Pollio, Thomas, & Thompson, 2004; Lewis, Ginsberg, Davis, & Smith, 2004) and …

Longitudinal Trajectory Of Adolescent Exposure To Community Violence And Depressive Symptoms Among Adolescents And Young Adults: Understanding The Effect Of Mental Health Service Usage, Wan-Yi Chen, Kenneth Corvo, Yookyong Lee, Hyeouk "Chris" Hahm

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications

Research on the impact of exposure to community violence tends to define victimization as a single construct. This study differentiates between direct and indirect violence victimization in their association with mental health problems and mental health service use. This study includes 8947 individuals from four waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and examines (1) whether sub-types of adolescent victimization are linked to depressive symptoms; (2) whether adolescent victimization is linked with mental health service use; and (3) the role of mental health service use in attenuating symptoms arising from victimizations. Adolescents witnessing community violence were …

State-Level Anti-Bullying Policy: Toward A System-Level Implementation Framework, Andrew Martinez Jun 2016

State-Level Anti-Bullying Policy: Toward A System-Level Implementation Framework, Andrew Martinez

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Bullying is a public health concern, with negative mental health and academic consequences. In response to the prevalence of bullying in our nation’s schools, all 50 states have now enacted anti-bullying legislation. Overall, these mandates include a series of requirements geared toward addressing bullying in school settings and improving overall school climate.

Following this trend of states enacting anti-bullying legislation, the State of Connecticut, the focus of this study, passed PA 11-232, An Act Concerning the Strengthening of School Bullying Laws (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 11-232). This legislation was passed in 2011 and brought forth a series of mandates geared …
