Phoning It In? Examining Pre-Employment Phone Interview Procedure In Higher Education, Paul J. Antonellis Jr., Danielle Flam
Management Faculty Publications
In the United States, the employment screening process for hiring full-time faculty in higher education involves the vetting of curricula vitae, phone interview(s), and/or campus visits (Cardeiro, 2010; Shively, Woodward, & Stanly, 1999). The purpose of this research was to examine the phone interview procedure at one institute of higher education, and from there, formulate a systematic phone interviewing procedure that could be put to use at this particular university.
After conducting a review of relevant literature, the researchers engaged in action research that utilized qualitative data of 10 participants who took part in the pre-interview, professional development intervention, and …

Services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) often include tailored strategies for successful employment placement. Using Oliver’s (1980) Expectation Confirmation Theory, this study utilized exploratory and confirmatory analyses of semi-structured interviews of 10 VR professionals to examine their view of the role expectations play in their assessment of important factors that lead to successful outcomes for DHH clients. Analysis revealed a complex, multilevel system in which VRCs operate as active mediators of the expectations of both clients who are DHH and their potential employers.

Psychological And Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Jobseekers With Physical Disability Barriers, Philip Young P. Hong, Hayley Sneiderman Stokar, Sangmi Choi
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this research is to investigate the process of psychological empowerment by way of examin- ing the effects of perceived employment barrier on employment hope, and employment hope on economic self-suffi- ciency. A structural equation modeling analysis was used with a sample of 517 participants in a job readiness program of a community-based social service organization in Chicago. Results indicate that employment hope mediates the path between perceived barriers and economic self-sufficiency. Findings provide preliminary evidence to support an em- powerment-based approach to rehabilitation, promoting self-sufficiency among people with physical disabilities using interventions that address employment barriers and …

A New Theoretical Approach To Postsecondary Student Disability: Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model, Katherine C. Aquino
A New Theoretical Approach To Postsecondary Student Disability: Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model, Katherine C. Aquino
Administration and Instructional Leadership Faculty Publications
Disability is often viewed as an obstacle to postsecondary inclusion, but not a characteristic of student diversity. Additionally, current theoretical frameworks isolate disability from other student diversity characteristics. In response, a new conceptual framework, the Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model (DDDM), was created to address disability as a multifaceted aspect of student diversity.

Examining The Effects Of Ethnicity On Transactional Distance In An Online Distance Learning Course, Benson Kinyanjui
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Distance learning (DL), commonly referred to as online learning has grown exponentially in the past two decades with at least 85% of institutions of higher education in the US offering DL courses by 2013, serving more than 7 million students in the US. As the number of students taking online courses has increased, the number of ethnic minority students, specifically African Americans enrolled in online courses has also significantly increased. Despite this demonstrated interest in higher education, African Americans have had poorer learning outcomes and higher dropout rates than Caucasians in both online and face to face programs. According to …

Changing Attitudes About Employing The Disabled: What Works And Why, James Hall, Richie Zweigenhaft
Changing Attitudes About Employing The Disabled: What Works And Why, James Hall, Richie Zweigenhaft
Modern Psychological Studies
Previous research on attitudes towards disabled individuals have found inconsistencies that have been reported in studies that use the Interaction with Disabled Persons Scale (IDP). This research paper attempted to show that the IDP scale is as reliable as the Attitudes towards Disabled People (ATDP). The IDP scale did have a lower than expected Cronbach's alpha = .62, but moderate to strong relationship was found between the two scales, r = .44, p < .001. In order to further understand attitude differences and to help disabled individuals succeed in the workplace, the research conducted analyzed three different variables that could have an impact. Differences in education using both scales were analyzed. The IDP scaled proved not to be consistent analyzing this variable. The ATDP scale was approaching significance, F(2, 70) = .2.882, p = .06, eta2 = .08, and a larger sample size could change the results. The experimenter in this research is disabled and used that to understand f his presence would have an impact on results. In terms of the IDP scale there was no statistical significance between those he gave the scale to and those who received it from someone else, but using the ATDP scale there was a statistical difference found using t test, p = .02. Interactions with individuals were also analyzed but found no statistical significance. Further research in quality of life in individuals with disabilities could prove to be beneficial when bridging the gap between those with disabilities and those with no disabilities.

Examining The Effects Of Social Support And Engagement Factors On The Experiences And Performance Of College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Rebecca Hanna
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how social support from families, peers, campus faculty and staff, as well as student engagement in campus organizations, academics, and employment influence the postsecondary experiences and performance of college students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Aspects of college life including meeting new people, having constantly changing schedules and routines, living independently, and being responsible for finding supports may be overwhelming for students with ASD. Different levels of support and engagement as well as ability to self-advocate and adjust to campus life may influence their postsecondary experiences and academic performance. More research that …
What Are Classmates Thinking When It Comes To Post-Secondary Educational Accommodations For Students With Disabilities?, Adabel Ortega
What Are Classmates Thinking When It Comes To Post-Secondary Educational Accommodations For Students With Disabilities?, Adabel Ortega
Honors Capstones
There have been several legislative pieces (e.g., Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008) that has mandated students with disabilities are provided equitable educational opportunities within post-secondary educational institutions. Previous research has displayed that students with disabilities have a graduation rate of 34.7% compared to 51.2% for students without disabilities. One barrier in the limited request or use of college educational accommodations provided to students with disabilities. Previous research has demonstrated that students with disabilities have positive attitudes with disability support services, and that college peers have positive attitudes towards students …
Airline Pilots In Recovery From Alcoholism: A Quantitative Study Of Cognitive Change, Heather Christina Hamilton
Airline Pilots In Recovery From Alcoholism: A Quantitative Study Of Cognitive Change, Heather Christina Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In order to perform their duties, airline pilots must have no clinical diagnosis of mental illness or any substance use disorder. However, provisions have been in place since the 1970s that provide for a return to work for airline pilots with alcohol problems. To date, over 5,000 airline pilots have undergone rehabilitation for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and successfully returned to work. An important gap in the literature remains with regard to what extent improvements in cognitive performance may be experienced by airline pilots who complete treatment and to what extent age influences the amount of change. This study examined …
Job Satisfaction, Organizational Culture, And British Nurses' Intention To Leave Employment, Brendan Edward Williams
Job Satisfaction, Organizational Culture, And British Nurses' Intention To Leave Employment, Brendan Edward Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In spite of decades of research, concerning nurse's intention to leave their employer (ITL), in 2011, 31.2% of the British nurses surveyed indicated they had formed an ITL. Grounded in reasoned action theory as developed by Ajzen and Fishbein, the purpose of the correlational study was to provide hospital managers with information regarding the relationship among nurse's job satisfaction (JS), organizational culture (OC), and ITL. The archival data from the 2011 NHS Staff Survey included responses from nurses (n = 21,257) across the British National Health Service. The Spearman's rho correlates rs (21,257) indicated relationships among nurse's job satisfaction, organizational …
Meaningfulness Of Work As Perceived By Women From Diverse Social Classes: A Grounded Theory Exploration, Jennifer L. Hutmire
Meaningfulness Of Work As Perceived By Women From Diverse Social Classes: A Grounded Theory Exploration, Jennifer L. Hutmire
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite research connecting the meaningfulness of work with positive organizational outcomes, such as increased employee well-being, job satisfaction, engagement, and retention, there remains a lack of adequate, inclusive research explaining differences in women's perceptions of the meaningfulness of work. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to address this gap in the literature by developing a theory about the formation of perceptions of the meaningfulness of work and about the impact of those perceptions. Research questions explored perceptions that women from diverse social classes have of the meaningfulness of work, what influenced those perceptions, the impact of those …
Predictive Factors Of Compassion Fatigue Among Firefighters, Teresa Michelle Robinson
Predictive Factors Of Compassion Fatigue Among Firefighters, Teresa Michelle Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few existing studies have examined compassion fatigue among emergency responders even though firefighters and emergency medical service (EMS) professionals have repetitive direct exposure to traumatic events. This study focused on identifying predictor variables for the development of compassion fatigue in firefighters. Karasek's demand-control model, a commonly used work stress model, was the study's theoretical framework as it focuses on specific construct interactions that predict employee well-being. Accordingly, this correlational study examined the predictive nature of EMS license level, years of service, and personality type on the development of compassion fatigue in career firefighters. Data collection occurred with surveys incorporating the …
