ObjectivesTo assess the feasibility of recruitment, retention, outcome measures and intervention training/delivery among teachers, parents and children. To calculate a sample size estimation for full trial.DesignA single-centre, unblinded, cluster feasibility randomised controlled trial examining Social Stories delivered within a school environment compared with an attentional control.Setting37 primary schools in York, UK.Participants50 participants were recruited and a cluster randomisation approach by school was examined. Participants were randomised into the treatment group (n=23) or a waiting list control group (n=27).Outcome measuresAcceptability and feasibility of the trial, intervention and of measurements required to assess outcomes in a definitive trial.ResultsAn assessment of the questionnaire …

Can’T Count Or Won’T Count? Embedding Quantitative Methods In Substantive Sociology Curricula: A Quasi-Experiment, Malcolm Williams, Luke Sloan, Sin Yi Cheung, Carole Sutton, Sebastian Stevens, Libby Runham

This paper reports on a quasi-experiment in which quantitative methods (QM) are embedded within a substantive sociology module. Through measuring student attitudes before and after the intervention alongside control group comparisons, we illustrate the impact that embedding has on the student experience. Our findings are complex and even contradictory. Whilst the experimental group were less likely to be distrustful of statistics and appreciate how QM inform social research, they were also less confident about their statistical abilities, suggesting that through ‘doing’ quantitative sociology the experimental group are exposed to the intricacies of method and their optimism about their own abilities …

Lone Parents’ Experiences Of Higher Education, Lucy Spowart
Lone Parents’ Experiences Of Higher Education, Lucy Spowart
Peninsula Medical School
In the UK, close to one in four children are cared for by a lone parent (Policy Research Institute, 2007:8). The specific needs of students with parental responsibilities have been largely ignored by widening participation agendas, despite research evidence suggesting that this group is increasing in number (Hinton-Smith, 2012; Moreau, 2011). One of the key challenges at Plymouth (and elsewhere) is that data classifying students as parents is not collected on application or enrolment, and as a consequence this group remain largely invisible. Student Finance England no longer offers specific funding for single parents adding to the difficulties in identifying …

Postpartum Regression Of A Presumed Cavernous Meningioma, See Yung Phang, Peter Whitfield
Postpartum Regression Of A Presumed Cavernous Meningioma, See Yung Phang, Peter Whitfield
Peninsula Medical School
Meningiomas are known to be more common in females than males. They are also known in rare cases to grow in size during pregnancy, which can complicate its management. We describe a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with blurring of her vision and diplopia during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small left cavernous sinus meningioma. The patient was treated conservatively until her uncomplicated delivery. A postpartum MRI scan showed complete regression of the suspected meningioma. Currently the patient is contemplating a further pregnancy.
