AbstractWe (Heintz and Ruch 2015, An examination of the convergence between the conceptualization and the measurement of humor styles: A study of the construct validity of the Humor Styles Questionnaire. Humor: International Journal of Humor Research 28. 611–633) pointed to a lack of convergence between the conceptualization of humor styles and how they are measured with the HSQ (i. e. the Humor Styles Questionnaire and recommended adjusting the model of the humor styles or alternatively the HSQ. The reply (Martin 2015, On the challenges of measuring humor styles: Response to Heintz and Ruch. Humor: International Journal of Humor Research 28. …

The Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ; Martin et al., 2003) is one of the most frequently used questionnaires in humor research and has been adapted to several languages. The HSQ measures four humor styles (affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating), which should be adaptive or potentially maladaptive to psychosocial well-being. The present study analyzes the internal consistency, factorial validity, and factorial invariance of the HSQ on the basis of several German-speaking samples combined (total N = 1,101). Separate analyses were conducted for gender (male/female), age groups (16-24, 25-35, >36 years old), and countries (Germany/Switzerland). Internal consistencies were good for the overall sample …

Abstract Childhood obesity is one of the 21st century's most serious global health challenges. Research suggests that better access to ‘greenspace’ (e.g. parks) may encourage physical activity and reduce the risk of obesity amongst children. We extend earlier work by considering childhood obesity in relation to proximity to the coast, using data from England's National Child Measurement Programme. Results suggest that although the overall prevalence of childhood obesity is slightly lower at the coast (−0.68% points comparing <1 km to >20 km, p<0.001), the relationship depends on area type. Specifically, although a coastal proximity gradient (lower obesity rates nearer the coast) was found for rural areas and smaller cities and towns, it was not present among large urban conurbations (interaction p-value<0.001). Coastal environments and access to them are changing in many areas, and research to explore potential impacts on child health is warranted.

The rapid increase in the number of older people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia represents one of the major challenges to the health and social care systems. Early detection of AD makes it possible for patients to access appropriate services and to benefit from new treatments and therapies, as and when they become available. The onset of AD starts many years before the clinical symptoms become clear. A biomarker that can measure the brain changes in this period would be useful for early diagnosis of AD. Potentially, the electroencephalogram (EEG) can play a valuable role in …

Crack Path And Fracture Analysis In Fsw Of Small Diameter 6082-T6 Aluminium Tubes Under Tension-Torsion Loading, E Maggiolini, R Tovo, L Susmel, Mn James, Dg Hattingh
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper reports part of the work done in a research project aimed at developing an optimised process to join 38 mm diameter tubes of 6082-T6 aluminium alloy using friction stir welding (FSW), and then to determine the fatigue performance under tension, torsion and tension–torsion loading conditions. The final outcome of the project is intended to be guidance for fatigue design of small diameter aluminium tubes joined by FSW, and this paper presents information on crack path and defects under the various loading conditions. Crack path analysis was performed using both low magnification stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, in …

A Parallel Evolutionary Approach To Solving Systems Of Equations In Polycyclic Groups, Matthew J. Craven, Daniel Robertz
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
AbstractThe Anshel–Anshel–Goldfeld (AAG) key exchange protocol is based upon the multiple conjugacy problem for a finitely-presented group. The hardness in breaking this protocol relies on the supposed difficulty in solving the corresponding equations for the conjugating element in the group. Two such protocols based on polycyclic groups as a platform were recently proposed and were shown to be resistant to length-based attack. In this article we propose a parallel evolutionary approach which runs on multicore high-performance architectures. The approach is shown to be more efficient than previous attempts to break these protocols, and also more successful. Comprehensive data of experiments …

Semiautomatic Friction Stir Welding Of 38 Mm Od 6082-T6 Aluminium Tubes, Dg Hattingh, Welligh Lg Von, D Bernard, L Susmel, R Tovo, Mn James
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper describes the development of a semi-automated friction stir welding (FSW) technique for joining 38 mm nominal outer diameter (OD) tubes of 6082-T6 aluminium alloy with 3.5 mm nominal wall thickness. The technique incorporates a retracting tool in order to avoid leaving a substantial hole in the joint line after extracting the tool at the end of the welding process. This is one of very first applications of FSW to small diameter tubular geometries to be reported in the open literature and the technique is capable of producing small-scale production runs (circa 100) of welded tube specimens with consistent …

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Communicating information about geological and hydrological hazards relies on appropriately worded communications targeted at the needs of the audience. But what are these needs and how does the geoscientist discern them? This paper adopts a psychological "mental models" approach to assess the public perception of the geological subsurface and surveys three communities in the south-west of England about their attitudes and representations of the geological subsurface. The findings reveal important preconceptions and misconceptions regarding the impact of hydrological systems and hazards on the geological subsurface, notably in terms of the persistent conceptualisation of underground rivers and the inferred relations between …

The Android ecosystem has witnessed a surge in malware, which not only puts mobile devices at risk but also increases the burden on malware analysts assessing and categorizing threats. In this paper, we show how to use machine learning to automatically classify Android malware samples into families with high accuracy, while observing only their runtime behavior. We focus exclusively on dynamic analysis of runtime behavior to provide a clean point of comparison that is dual to static approaches. Specific challenges in the use of dynamic analysis on Android are the limited information gained from tracking low-level events and the imperfect …
