Characterization Of Xylella Fastidiosa In Rabbiteye Blueberry, Mary Helen Ferguson Jan 2016

Characterization Of Xylella Fastidiosa In Rabbiteye Blueberry, Mary Helen Ferguson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Xylella fastidiosa colonizes the xylem of a wide range of plants and causes symptoms in many of them. It was of interest to determine how widespread X. fastidiosa was and what its potential impact might be in rabbiteye blueberry. X. fastidiosa was detected from two of 17 Louisiana orchards from which samples were collected. A yield study was conducted at one of these orchards, and mean yields of X. fastidiosa-positive plants were 55% and 62% less than those of X. fastidiosa-negative plants in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Average berry weight was also lower in X. fastidiosa-positive plants. However, plants that …

Eastern Oyster Physiological Responses To Acute And Chronic Exposure To Suspended Sediments, Stephanie Bernasconi Jan 2016

Eastern Oyster Physiological Responses To Acute And Chronic Exposure To Suspended Sediments, Stephanie Bernasconi

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana estuaries provide habitat for some of the most productive population of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica in the Gulf of Mexico. Coastal alterations, including changes in river flow of the Mississippi River, sediment diversions, and climate change, are likely to impact areas supporting oyster production. Although oysters in Louisiana already experience periods of high total suspended sediment, these coastal alterations may increase duration, frequency, and concentration of high suspended sediment concentrations over oyster grounds, which could have significantly impact oyster physiology and production by affecting basic physiological functions of oysters. In this study, we measured effects of acute (1 …

Control, Care, And Stress: Parenting's Effect On Child Internalizing Symptoms, Maysa Kaskas Jan 2016

Control, Care, And Stress: Parenting's Effect On Child Internalizing Symptoms, Maysa Kaskas

LSU Master's Theses

Theoretical models of childhood psychopathology suggest that the parent-child relationship serves an influential role in the development and maintenance of internalizing disorders such as anxiety and depression. However, there is a great deal of inconsistency in the research literature on the predictive power of parenting variables such as parental control and parental care. Furthermore, these parenting variables are often poorly defined and inconsistently operationalized across studies, hampering interpretation of results and limiting conclusions on the strength of the effect. Additionally, few studies have examined the role of parenting with careful attention to moderators. In order to investigate these problems, 189 …

Policies Of Loss: Coastal Erosion And The Struggle To Save Louisiana's Wetlands, Rebecca B. Costa Jan 2016

Policies Of Loss: Coastal Erosion And The Struggle To Save Louisiana's Wetlands, Rebecca B. Costa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since the 1930s, Louisiana has lost approximately 1,800 square miles of land due to the subsidence of the state’s coastal wetlands. By the early 1970s, public officials and private citizens were starting to become aware of the crisis on the coast, and a broad agreement developed among state and federal representatives that action was needed to address the problem. Over the course of nearly forty years, policymakers in Louisiana and Washington, D.C., implemented a series of laws and regulations meant to protect vulnerable ecosystems like the state’s wetlands. In the 1980s, officials also started crafting policies to help restore Louisiana’s …

A Statistical, Data-Driven Assessment Of Climate Extremes And Trends For The Continental U.S., Xinbo Huang Jan 2016

A Statistical, Data-Driven Assessment Of Climate Extremes And Trends For The Continental U.S., Xinbo Huang

LSU Master's Theses

Climate extremes are meteorological events that can have significant impacts on human and natural systems. Weather hazards, such as heat waves, drought, heavy thunderstorms, floods, hurricanes, occur frequently, and are a threat to human lives and property. Climate data observations spanning over 100 years are an important asset in understanding climate extremes and trends. This research uses daily climate data observations from more than 3000 climate stations in the continental U.S. to assess the climate trends and extremes, including temperature, precipitation, and snowfall. The climate data measurement sites were grouped by climate divisions and each climate division was statistically assessed …

Case Presentation: A 44-year-old male was referred for consultation in 2007 owing to uncontrolled DM2 despite maximum metformin (MET) dose. Testing led to a biochemical diagnosis of acromegaly. An 8-mm pituitary adenoma was seen on MRI. Transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma …

Resonant Inductive Coupling As A Potential Means For Wireless Power Transfer To Printed Spiral Coil, Mohammad Haerinia, Ebrahim S. Afjei Jan 2016

Resonant Inductive Coupling As A Potential Means For Wireless Power Transfer To Printed Spiral Coil, Mohammad Haerinia, Ebrahim S. Afjei

Electrical Engineering Student Publications

This paper proposes an inductive coupled wireless power transfer system that analyses the relationship between induced voltage and distance of resonating inductance in a printed circuit spiral coils. The resonant frequency produced by the circuit model of the proposed receiving and transmitting coils are analysed by simulation and laboratory experiment. The outcome of the two results are compared to verify the validity of the proposed inductive coupling system. Experimental measurements are consistent with simulations over a range of frequencies spanning the resonance.

Exploring The Construct Validity Of The Behavioral Rating Inventory Of Executive Function (Brief): Comparing Variance Associated With Common Method Versus Similar Constructs, Lauren K. Hoefling

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) is a teacher and parent questionnaire designed to measure executive functioning (EF). Due to the role of EF in ADHD, the BRIEF is often used in assessment of ADHD. The purpose of the current study was to explore the convergence and divergence of the BRIEF with a performance-based measure of EF, behavior rating scales, an observational measure of child behavior during testing, and longer-term academic outcomes. The current study used archival data representing 105 children referred to an ADHD evaluation clinic. It was hypothesized that the BRIEF would be significantly correlated with …

Improvisational Unionism, Michael M. Oswalt Jan 2016

Improvisational Unionism, Michael M. Oswalt

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Recent fights for a $15-an-hour minimum wage at Walmart and in the fast-food industry have interested academics, captivated the press, and energized the public. For good reason. The campaigns upend conventional wisdom about what unions do (help workers win collective bargaining rights) and why they do it (build the membership). Scattered flash strikes for seemingly impossible or idiosyncratic goals on no obvious timeline have shattered that mold. Though much has already been said about these developments, scholarship has yet to provide a rigorous theoretical frame to categorize and explain the new form of activism. This Article argues that improvisation — …

Left Behind: The Dying Principle Of Family Reunification Under Immigration Law, Anita Maddali Jan 2016

Left Behind: The Dying Principle Of Family Reunification Under Immigration Law, Anita Maddali

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

A key underpinning of modern U.S. immigration law is family reunification, but in practice it can privilege certain families and certain members within families. Drawing on legislative history, this Article examines the origins and objectives of the principle of family reunification in immigration law and relies on legal scholarship and sociological and anthropological research to reveal how contemporary immigration law and policy has diluted the principle for many families — particularly those who do not fit the dominant nuclear family model, those classified as unskilled, and families from oversubscribed countries — and members within families. It explores the ways in …

After Images: Using Augusto Boal's Image Theatre To Balance Artistry, Analysis, And Activism In The Performance Composition Process, Bonny Leah Mcdonald Jan 2016

After Images: Using Augusto Boal's Image Theatre To Balance Artistry, Analysis, And Activism In The Performance Composition Process, Bonny Leah Mcdonald

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I describe several performance experiments in which I applied Brazilian theatre artist Augusto Boal’s Image Theatre method to mobilize a composition process that is artistically exciting, politically relevant, and pedagogically engaging. Over the span of about seven years I used Image Theatre as the bedrock of my artistic practice as a director of social justice themed works for the stage. I show how using Image Theatre as a tool for performance composition can balance artistry (theatrical practice), analysis (cultural studies), and activism (collaborative struggles toward justice). To do so, I review relevant literature on Boal and Image …

Ethnic Political Parties And Civil Conflict, Erin Nicole El Koubi Jan 2016

Ethnic Political Parties And Civil Conflict, Erin Nicole El Koubi

LSU Master's Theses

The lack of consensus on the significance of ethnicity on civil conflict derives from the measures used, not from the concept’s lack of merit. Current measures, such as the ethno-linguistic fractionalization index (ELF), examine differences in demographics rather than how the diversity becomes politically relevant or when the diversity leads to conflict. By using Horowitz’s (1985) theory of ethnic voting and a measure for how closely a state’s political parties are aligned with ethnic groups, one can better assess how countries’ ethnic groups are politically organized and how this organization is associated with civil conflict. Using an original measure derived …

Social Studies In The Modern Era: A Case Study Of Effective Teachers' Use Of Literacy And Technology, Kristal Curry, Todd Cherner Jan 2016

Social Studies In The Modern Era: A Case Study Of Effective Teachers' Use Of Literacy And Technology, Kristal Curry, Todd Cherner

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this research project was to highlight the practices and philosophies of two effective—but different—social studies teachers who balance the demands of teaching in the modern era while honoring their own philosophies for teaching social studies. This project was ground in the theoretical framework provided by TPACK and used a case study methodology for its research design. While the pedagogical content knowledge of the participants was strong and technology was used abundantly for instructional purposes, this research raised questions regarding how teachers can most effectively use technology to enhance instruction by helping students conceptualize content knowledge and apply …

The Danger Zone: How The Dangerousness Standard In Civil Commitment Proceedings Harms People With Serious Mental Illness, Sara Gordon Jan 2016

The Danger Zone: How The Dangerousness Standard In Civil Commitment Proceedings Harms People With Serious Mental Illness, Sara Gordon

Scholarly Works

Almost every American state allows civil commitment upon a finding that a person, as a result of mental illness, is gravely disabled and unable to meet their basic needs for food and shelter. Yet in spite of these statutes, most psychiatrists and courts will not commit an individual until they are found to pose a danger to themselves or others. All people have certain rights to be free from unwanted medical treatment, but for people with serious mental illness, those civil liberties are an abstraction, safeguarded for them by a system that is not otherwise ensuring access to shelter and …

Limiting Deterrence: Judicial Resistance To Detention Of Asylum-Seekers In Israel And The United States, Michael Kagan Jan 2016

Limiting Deterrence: Judicial Resistance To Detention Of Asylum-Seekers In Israel And The United States, Michael Kagan

Scholarly Works

Governments have advanced the argument that asylum-seekers may be detained in order to deter other would-be asylum-seekers from coming. But in recent litigation in the United States and Israel, this justification for mass detention met with significant resistance from courts. This Essay looks at the way the American and Israeli courts dealt with the proposed deterrence rationale for asylum-seeker detention. It suggests that general deterrence raises three sequential questions:

1. Is deterrence ever legitimate as a stand alone justification for depriving people of liberty?

2. If deterrence is sometimes legitimate, is it valid as a general matter in migration control, …

The Impact Of Experimentally Manipulated Post-Event Processing On The Relationship Between Social Anxiety And Cannabis Craving And Use, Anthony Harlan Ecker Jan 2016

The Impact Of Experimentally Manipulated Post-Event Processing On The Relationship Between Social Anxiety And Cannabis Craving And Use, Anthony Harlan Ecker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cannabis-related problems are major public health concerns. Social anxiety appears to be a unique risk factor that contributes to the development of cannabis-related problems, including cannabis use disorders. Given this risk, identification of cognitive vulnerabilities that may contribute to the onset and maintenance of co-occurring social anxiety and cannabis-related problems remains an important research goal. Socially anxious individuals experience anxiety and negative affect in response to cognitively reviewing past social situations (i.e., post-event processing [PEP]) and are likely to use cannabis to cope with negative affective states, which may occur during PEP. Thus, PEP may be one cognitive vulnerability factor …

The Grapes Of Wrath: On The Health Of Immigration Detainees, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2016

The Grapes Of Wrath: On The Health Of Immigration Detainees, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

This Article challenges the lack of health care provided to individuals in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) custody. As background, many immigration detainees are physically and emotionally vulnerable at the time of initial confinement due to a history of torture and trauma, which may include human trafficking, sexual violence, political oppression, psychosocial trauma, and acculturative stress. Detention can exacerbate preexisting vulnerabilities and contribute to severe physical and mental illness as well as death. Between October 2003 and October 2015, 153 individuals died while in ICE custody. Although most proposals for detainee health reform borrow heavily from constitutional law, international …

Domestic Violence And The Politics Of Self-Help, Elizabeth L. Macdowell Jan 2016

Domestic Violence And The Politics Of Self-Help, Elizabeth L. Macdowell

Scholarly Works

Self-help programs are conceptualized as alternatives to attorney representation that can help both courts and unrepresented litigants. The rhetoric of self-help also typically includes empowering unrepresented individuals to help themselves. But how do self-help programs respond to litigants’ efforts at self-advocacy? This Article reports findings from a study of courthouse self-help programs assisting unrepresented litigants applying for protection orders. The central finding is that self-help staff members were not neutral in the provision of services despite a professed ethic of neutrality. Using the sociological concept of demeanor, this Article shows that staff members rewarded protection order applicants who conformed to …

The Certifying Triangle Of Financial Reports, Dong Li Jan 2016

The Certifying Triangle Of Financial Reports, Dong Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research provides theoretical, regulatory, and empirical underpinnings that financial reports are the joint representation of the certifying triangle (i.e., CEO-CFO-Auditor). This research also finds that replacement of the CEO tends to reduce the survival rate of the CFO with the firm, and vice versa; replacement of the CFO reduces the survival rate of the auditor, and vice versa. However, an association does not exist between the survival rate of the CEO and the auditor. Moreover, while a single realignment of the certifying triangle does not reduce the year-end ERC, a double (CEO-CFO) realignment significantly decreases the ERC. This negative …

Effect Of Bitterness Blockers In Partial And Complete Replacement Of Sodium Chloride With Potassium Chloride On The Physicochemical And Sensory Characteristics Of Marinated Chicken Breast Fillets, Ana Gabriela Ocampo Arriaga Jan 2016

Effect Of Bitterness Blockers In Partial And Complete Replacement Of Sodium Chloride With Potassium Chloride On The Physicochemical And Sensory Characteristics Of Marinated Chicken Breast Fillets, Ana Gabriela Ocampo Arriaga

LSU Master's Theses

High sodium intake has negative health implications on hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Brines used in chicken marination are composed of salt (NaCl), phosphates and seasonings. Potassium chloride (KCl) is the most common sodium replacer but its use is typically limited to less than 50% substitution due to its undesirable bitterness and metallic aftertaste. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of 5’ adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and glycine, as bitterness blockers, on physicochemical, sensory characteristics and purchase intent of sodium reduced chicken breast fillets. Chicken breast was injected with a 20% pick-up solution. Salt treatments (trts) were 50, …

"Miss" Communication: Women Navigating The Crossroads Of The Journalism And Mass Communication Industry And Academia, Aariel Roxanne Charbonnet Jan 2016

"Miss" Communication: Women Navigating The Crossroads Of The Journalism And Mass Communication Industry And Academia, Aariel Roxanne Charbonnet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study explores the career transitions of women from the mass communication industry to academia using Schlossberg’s (1984) theory of transition. In addition to the job demands as academics and administrators, mass communication leaders must satisfy the demands of the professional communities their schools serve. This calls for a more practical curriculum with media and communication professionals serving as faculty members. For women, the demands appear to have another layer, as women are leaving the journalism industry earlier than men (Willnat & Weaver, 2014). This begs the following questions: Why are women leaving the industry? What are the experiences …
